ABOUT THE

DIVISION

The Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is one of four academic divisions at Talladega College. Founded in 1867, the College is a small liberal arts institution located in Talladega, Alabama. The Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics functions in line with the mission of the college, aimed to equip its graduates for the global community through academic excellence, moral values, community service and professional development. The division offers academic programs with majors in biology, chemistry, computer science and mathematics. Sequences in pre-medicine and pre-nursing are available and seventy percent of the science faculty have earned doctorates. Graduates of the Talladega College Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics are competitive with those of other institutions across the nation. The division has an Interactive Classroom located in the basement of Silsby Science Hall, providing unique learning opportunities to the student and a Science Drop-In Center (SDIC) located in Savery Library, which provides state-of-the-art resources to division students and faculty. Mathematics tutoring, computer assisted instruction and other areas of tutoring through the campus student success center are available to students. The division also provides learning experiences beyond Talladega College including dual degree programs, student research participation at major universities, seminars and lectures featuring noted scientists. Engaging research and student professional development opportunities are available. Special Programs in the division provide eligible students with scholarships during the academic year and summer research opportunities as well as traditional financial aid and grants. The Computer Science Department The Computer Science Program supports a student’s development of skills in mathematics and fundamentals of computer problem solving. Highly sophisticated hardware and software systems are a major priority in maintaining the program. The Department of Computer Science offers a master’s program and a Project Management minor.

Mission Statement: The Computer Science Department strives for excellence in creating, applying and imparting knowledge in computer science and computer information systems by providing the highest quality of education and services to the global community.

Cybersecurity:

Provide skillsets to compete in the global marketplace as skilled IT professionals and business leaders. It has two concentrations, Cybersecurity and Health Informatics, with two tracks, thesis and nonthesis option.

Designed to support the critical need for workforce development in Cybersecurity and prepare students to pursue their future education in the field of Cybersecurity and Information technology.

Computer Science: Produce graduates who are equipped to make valuable contributions in the software development and networking field.

Computer Information Systems: Produce graduates who are equipped to make valuable contributions in diverse areas of computer science and business, including the interface of computers and physical systems.

Computer Science and Computer Information Systems Courses: Certain courses are directly aligned with CompTIA A+, Security+, Network+, CISSP and Project Managements courses.

Linkages & Special Programs Within the four departments in the division are also dual degree programs, linkages with other institutions, special programs, and honor organizations and clubs.


Dual Degree Programs A high percentage of the division graduates are accepted into professional schools and graduate programs. n

Pre-nursing linkage with Jacksonville State University. This program consists of a 2 + 2 year program (1 degree: B.S. from JSU) or the 3+2 year program (2 degrees: B.A. from TC and the B.S. from JSU).

Premedical programs prepare students for medical school, dental school, veterinary school and chiropractic school.

Division Special Programs These programs help the students to be competitive and meet tomorrow’s challenges. n

Louis Stokes Alabama Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). The LSAMP program offers scholarships and research opportunities to all division majors who qualify.

Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair). The McNair Program offers summer and academic year research opportunities to all division majors who qualify.

The Biology Department The Biology Department strives to create an engaging and friendly academic atmosphere where excellence is encouraged and intellectual growth fostered. Through small classes and individualized attention, students enhance their academic experiences through colloquiums, seminars, and collaborative efforts including on and off-campus research opportunities.

Program Faculty The department has a well-prepared faculty with concentrations in Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Microbiology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, Public Health and Cell and Molecular Biology.

Program Benefits n

The B.A. degree in biology from Talladega College prepares students to enter professional schools in fields such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, veterinary school, chiropractic school, podiatry, optometry and physical therapy.

This degree enables students to enter doctoral programs in the life sciences in preparation for research careers.

The degree, in conjunction with a teaching certificate, provides a solid foundation for a career as a public school biology teacher.

Graduates may also pursue careers in the fast-growing biotechnology industry, forensic science, environmental sciences, and public health.


The Chemistry Department Chemistry is a central science and its interdisciplinary nature connects it to virtually all STEM related fields. The importance of chemistry lies is in its relevance to virtually every aspect of our everyday life – from the development of products we use day to day – to the food we eat – to the technology that powers our lives. The Chemistry Department at Talladega College prepares students to pursue a multitude of career pathways such as: n

Program Goals It is our mission to cultivate the minds of the next generation of scientists who will go on to solve some of the worlds greatest problems. We achieve this by providing our students with comprehensive foundational knowledge in four disciplines of chemistry—analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical. In addition, we support the student’s exploration of the chemistry and related STEM fields through various research opportunities both and off campus.

Program Benefits Our small, but ever-growing size, allows us to really interact with students, becoming more than just teachers, but also mentors who are invested in the long-term success of our students and their overall wellbeing. Small class sizes allow for the use of innovative teaching methods that address the various learning styles of our student population. Students are assisted by faculty in securing their next academic and or professional goal through assistance with application to jobs and/or graduate or professional school.


The Mathematics Department The program offers a B.A. degree in Mathematics, while providing the foundation for specialization along career paths leading to: n Graduate studies in mathematics n Careers in the fields of mathematics education n Careers in statistics, actuary, medical or physical sciences, and economics.
