GLOBAL AIRLINES ASK PASSENGERS TO SUBSIDISE GREEN FUEL TO HELP CUT EMISSIONS Selling flights during a global pandemic is not easy, never mind asking passengers to subsidize the fuel bill. But airlines such as SAS and Lufthansa are doing exactly that in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. They are offering passengers the option to offset emissions from their flights with contributions to the cost of using sustainable fuel, which is less polluting than traditional kerosene over its life cycle, but also significantly more expensive. IEA CUTS OIL-DEMAND FORECASTS AS AIR TRAVEL OUTLOOK DARKENS The International Energy Agency cut forecasts for global oil demand as air travel suffers from the coronavirus crisis even more than previously expected. The IEA reduced estimates for almost every quarter through to the end of 2021, with the second half of this year taking the steepest downgrades. Air travel remained two-thirds lower than last year in July, normally a peak month because of holiday flying, it said in a monthly report. THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE BUBBLE, MINUS TESLA, HAS ‘STARTED TO BURST,’ JIM CRAMER SAYS Wall Street’s craze for electric vehicle stocks is coming to an end after valuations ballooned to levels that are unwarranted, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said August 4. That is with the exception of Tesla, the Elon Muskhelmed electric-vehicle company whose stock price has increased fourfold from its low point in March. THE DIRTY SECRETS OF ‘CLEAN’ ELECTRIC VEHICLES The widespread view that fossil fuels are “dirty” and renewables such as wind and solar energy and electric vehicles are “clean” has become a fixture of mainstream media and policy assumptions across the political spectrum in developed countries, perhaps with the exception of the Trump-led U.S. administration.
