AIRLINES ASK PASSENGERS TO SUBSIDISE GREEN FUEL TO HELP CUT EMISSIONS Selling flights during a global pandemic is not easy, never mind asking passengers to subsidize the fuel bill. But airlines such as SAS and Lufthansa are doing exactly that in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. They are offering passengers the option to offset emissions from their flights with contributions to the cost of using sustainable fuel, which is less polluting than traditional kerosene over its life cycle, but also significantly more expensive. IEA CUTS OIL-DEMAND FORECASTS AS AIR TRAVEL OUTLOOK DARKENS The International Energy Agency cut forecasts for global oil demand as air travel suffers from the coronavirus crisis even more than previously expected. The IEA reduced estimates for almost every quarter through to the end of 2021, with the second half of this year taking the steepest downgrades. Air travel remained two-thirds lower than last year in July, normally a peak month because of holiday flying, it said in a monthly report. THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE BUBBLE, MINUS TESLA, HAS ‘STARTED TO BURST,’ JIM CRAMER SAYS Wall Street’s craze for electric vehicle stocks is coming to an end after valuations ballooned to levels that are unwarranted, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said August 4. That is with the exception of Tesla, the Elon Muskhelmed electric-vehicle company whose stock price has increased fourfold from its low point in March. THE DIRTY SECRETS OF ‘CLEAN’ ELECTRIC VEHICLES The widespread view that fossil fuels are “dirty” and renewables such as wind and solar energy and electric vehicles are “clean” has become a fixture of mainstream media and policy assumptions across the political spectrum in developed countries, perhaps with the exception of the Trump-led U.S. administration.

IT’S HARDER THAN YOU THINK TO STOP USING FOSSIL FUELS Efforts to ween the economy off of fossil fuels and onto more renewable energy to address climate change face significant technological hurdles beyond the economic impacts of such a transition.

Canada needs to sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas production if the country expects to attract investment necessary to expand output, Canadian Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan said on August 11.

FEDERAL ENVIRONMENT MINISTER SUPPORTS GIVING N.W.T. A SEAT ON OIL SANDS OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE The federal environment minister says he supports giving the N.W.T. a seat at the table when it comes to environmental and water monitoring in Alberta's oil sands. The comments come after Alberta and the federal government signed a deal to make major cuts to environmental monitoring of the oil sands due to the pandemic. As a result, the budget was reduced for fieldwork on the main branch of the Athabasca River which flows downstream into the Northwest Territories.

GLOBE CLIMATE NEWSLETTER: ALBERTA IS HAVING A MOMENT WITH EUROPE IN ADDRESSING CLIMATE RISKS Many European companies and countries are seen as leaders in the energy transition and addressing climate risks in their portfolios and assets. So, it should come as little surprise that some of these companies are reconsidering their stakes as another crisis – a global pandemic – has triggered a massive drop in demand for crude. Not to mention the pressure being put to bear on those companies by investors around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues.

ALBERTA, OTTAWA REDUCE OIL SANDS ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING BUDGET DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC Alberta has come to an agreement with the federal government that makes major cuts to environmental monitoring of the oil sands. The deal, a copy of which has been obtained by The Canadian Press, lays out research plans for this year’s field season under a federal-provincial program that oversees all monitoring of the area outside of company leases. HOME OF THE OIL SANDS EYES CLEANER FUTURE AS HYDROGEN SUPERPOWER The idea of producing cleaner-burning hydrogen to rid the world of fossil fuels is gaining traction in the unlikeliest of places: Alberta, home of the infamously dirty oil sands. Better known for energy companies that have been blacklisted by the Church of England for their emissions-intensive crude, the oil-rich Canadian province has attracted a growing group of researchers and entrepreneurs betting that the region's vast resources can turn it into one of the world's largest hydrogen suppliers. And they're about to get some backing from federal and local governments. ALBERTA TO JOIN THREE OTHER PROVINCES IN EXPLORING SMALL-SCALE NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY Alberta is the fourth province to say it will help explore emerging, small-scale nuclear power technology. ALBERTA INQUIRY INTO FUNDING OF FOREIGN ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS ALTERS COURSE AGAIN

Alberta’s publicly-funded inquiry into the alleged foreign financing of environmental groups has been tweaked again, suggesting it could target even more grassroots charities. A U.S. $433B MISSED OPPORTUNITY HAUNTS CANADA'S OIL HEARTLAND

If any place in North America should have been prepared for the crash in oil prices, it’s petroleum-rich Alberta, the Saudi Arabia of Canada. Back in 1976, Alberta’s government established a special fund to save some of its oil and gas revenue for leaner times when prices dropped or resources ran dry. For decades, royalties poured into Alberta’s coffers, with the gusher accelerating in the boom of the early 2000s as the province developed its vast oil-sands reserves, the world’s third-largest oil resource.

In its 2020 environmental, social and governance report, it calls for a 25 per cent emissions per barrel reduction by 2025, noting it is a "start" while it invests in new technologies and carbon offsets to reach its longer-term goal. Husky also announced a gender diversity commitment to have 25 per cent of its senior leadership roles occupied by women. OPINION | AN OFFER ALBERTA COULDN'T REFUSE When Jason Kenney tabled the report from his "fair deal panel" last month, it effectively opened a new front in his own long-running conflict with the federal Liberal government. But the latest results from a long-running survey on Canadian attitudes from the Environics Institute suggests he might want to reconsider this particular fight. This column is an opinion from Max Fawcett, a freelance writer and the former editor of Alberta Oil magazine.

HYDROGEN-INJECTED NATURAL GAS TO HEAT HOMES IN ALBERTA CITY NEXT YEAR Homes in Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., are to be warmed with natural gas blended with hydrogen beginning next year, a "first step" amid efforts to diversify the province's energy sector and potentially reduce carbon emissions. Canadian Utilities said about 5,000 customers will start using the blended gas, which will include up to five per cent hydrogen, after construction wraps up in the summer of 2021.
