The Synergy Schools Federation Annual Report 2022/2023

Due to the success of the first edition of our annual report in this format, we’ve continued to provide all interested stakeholders with an overview of the Federation’s achievements during the 2022/2023 academic year.
It’s been a very busy and productive academic year in all four schools across the Synergy Schools Federation. Staff have been relentless in their never-ending drive to provide the best possible education for all our pupils. As parents, I’m sure that you will have had conversations with your children about the new approaches that we’ve been embedding to further improve the teaching of reading and writing. We’re delighted with the impact that this has had our pupils are telling us that they enjoy these subjects even more now and are achieving better standards. You can read more about these approaches within this report.
In September, we welcomed 4 brand new teachers into our Federation’s schools: Miss Bassitt (Brompton), Mrs Cree (Crakehall), Mrs Charlton (Leeming) and Mr Merricks (Pickhill). What a fantastic impact each and every one of them has had. I’d like to thank them for the commitment that they’ve shown in their first year. Likewise, a big thank you goes out to Mrs Rayner (who co-ordinates the professional development for our new staff) and her team of mentors - Miss Middleton, Mr Bell, Mrs Hawes and Mrs Thompson.
I believe that this fantastic organisation continues to be at the forefront of the educational system and I am so very proud to lead it. We have a wonderful team in each and every school who are relentless in their drive to achieve the very best outcomes for each and every one of our pupils who come to school each day.
Collaboration and partnership working is the way that we can achieve further success. I look forward to continuing to work alongside you in the future.
With best wishes for a positive 2023/2024 academic year.
Mike White Executive HeadteacherIt’s been another very positive year for the Synergy Schools Federation.
Please take the time to read this report which includes information on the Federation’s achievements during the 2022/23 academic year. I have particularly enjoyed reminding myself of everything that has been accomplished. Looking back, it’s been fantastic to see what has been accomplished.
One important area of school leadership that is not obvious to most people is governance. Our hard-working governors provide strategic direction, hold senior leaders to account and oversee the financial performance of each school to ensure that money is well spent. This is organised through our full governing body meetings and also at school level by the governors involved in our Local School Committees. As a governing body we’ve worked hard on embedding this model. Governors tell me that they are better-informed than they have ever been and the progress that each school has made is really impressive.
This model has been in place for nearly 2 years now and during the spring term we asked Mrs Christine Johnston, our Local Authority Senior Adviser, to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of governance for us. Governors were delighted with the outcome, the final quote is shared with you below.
“In summary, the shared, ambitious vision clearly underpins the drive to ensure all involved with the Synergy Schools Federation experience success. The governance model is a significant strength. Challenge is robust, support is unwavering, and governance is exceptional.“
All governors are volunteers and bring a wealth of skills and experience that we use to develop the strategic direction of the Federation and its schools, providing support and encouragement to staff and ensuring that our intentions are being realised, and if not, we want to know why!
I would like to express my thanks to my fellow governors for all their hard work over the past year. I remain as positive and optimistic about the Federation and the work of our schools as when I became a governor 9 years ago and know that our schools are in very good hands.
With best wishes,
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the definition of the word synergy is: "the interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects."
As our name suggests, the Synergy Schools Federation is very much about schools working in partnership and achieving more together than they could ever do individually. This ethos continues to be developed as our schools move forward but it’s also of vital importance that each one is able to keep its unique characteristics in order to meet the needs or their local and wider communities.
We have compiled a list of aims which, whilst are not exhaustive, we hope are able to keep our Federation focused on what we believe are the most important aspects of our work.
• To ensure that each and every school provides a safe and secure environment, therefore enabling each child to flourish.
• To ensure that all schools promote equality and diversity for all.
• To provide a platform for schools with similar visions and ethos to collaborate and improve outcomes for all pupils.
• To enhance our schools’ broad and balanced curriculum offers by providing a wide range of pupil experiences.
• To ensure effective governance at all levels offering excellent challenge and strategic support.
• To provide a comprehensive range of professional development opportunities for all staff.
• To support other schools outside the Federation by working collaboratively, sharing best practice and being professionally generous.
✓ ‘The Write Stuff’ and ‘Hooked on Books’ are introduced across the whole federation to improve the way that children are taught to read and write.
✓ All schools are awarded the School Games Marks at ’Gold Standard’ for excellent PE and school sport provision.
✓ The Federation embeds a dedicated Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENCO) who works across all 4 schools, enhancing provision for some of our most vulnerable pupils.
✓ The Federation completes the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership’s Audit ensuring that our safeguarding culture is very strong and practice is thorough.
✓ Outdoor learning areas for our youngest children (EYFS) have been refurbished and resourcing improved.
✓ Pickhill CE Primary School has benefitted from a significant Local Authority capital project to rebuild their dining room and wrap around care facility.
In the autumn of 2022, Pickhill CE Primary School’s new dining room, around care facility was opened. This has made a
The building provides us with a new kitchen, storeroom, toilet and dining area which also doubles as our before and after school room. The images show our new facility in full use!
The project also allowed us an opportunity to improve the playground environment for the children. There is now a full-sized netball/ basketball court which is used on a daily basis a break/lunch times and
After the internal refurbishment of Busy Bees Pre-School over the summer of 2022, work was then undertaken to improve both outdoor learning areas over the autumn term for our pre-school and reception pupils. Artificial grass was installed over the half term break and a number of other minor works have significantly improved the learning environment for our youngest learners at Brompton-on-Swale CE Primary School.
In the summer of 2021 the Governing Body of Leeming & Londonderry and Pickhill CE Primary Schools federated with the Synergy Schools Federation. The Governing Bodies from each federation were disbanded and a new Synergy Schools Governing Body was elected with Local School Committees appointed.
The main purpose of the Synergy Schools Governing Body is to:
• Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of our schools and federation.
• Hold executive leaders to account for educational performance of the schools within the federation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff.
• Oversee the financial performance of the federation and make sure its money is well spent.
• Seek out the views of stakeholders

• A new book-led long term plan to encourage children's love of reading
• The ongoing development of the Outdoor Classroom, with the support of our school community, including zoned areas reflecting the 7 Areas of Learning
• Welcoming two enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced members of staff to the Busy Bees team

• A stay and play session to promote an opportunity for parents to meet new staff and be introduced to children’s key workers.
• Being awarded the School Games Gold award again for our PE and sports provision.
• Sporting successes most notably are our Y3/4, Y5/6 boys and KS2 girls’ cricket teams that all finished in the top two within their respective competitions. Our Y3/4 team then went all the way to the North Yorkshire finals. We also had successes in tennis, tag rugby, athletics, hockey, cross country, football, netball and really enjoyed learning new sports such as boccia, curling and mini basketball.
• Every single child at school has had an opportunity to represent the school in a sporting event.
We have worked hard on our personal development this academic year, thinking about our British Values and protected characteristics. We aim to discuss these weekly through our assemblies and collective worship.
We recently celebrated King Charles II coronation with an art and creative writing exhibition that was sponsored by the local Parish Council.
Our love and enjoyment for reading has continued to flourish. Each day the children take part in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) activities and the reading raffle ensures that children have the opportunity to win a brand new book each fortnight.
We have continued to provide a wide variety of after school opportunities –both sporting and creative. This includes activities and clubs such as dodgeball, choir, art as well as many others.
The summer term performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was another roaring success- well done to our Year 6 team.
Brompton Park, Brompton-on-Swale,In May, all our Year 5 pupils took part in an wonderfully exciting adventure to Peat Rigg Outdoor Centre, near Pickering. Emily, one of our Year 5 pupils at Crakehall, reports.
Peat Rigg is such an amazing place – so full of new experiences and fun activities. I think everyone was a bit scared and excited at first, but then, we started to make new friends and try things we had never done before. The food was great – so many different things to what we normally have. First, we were sorted into our groups and rooms. The rooms were all plant and place names - like Rowan or Whitby.
One of the first activities we did in my group was caving. This was quite fun, even if the caves were artificial. Some people had a map and had to guide us through with headtorches. We had to try and find crystals and fossils embedded in the walls and come back to the leader to identify what they were. Some people didn’t like crawling in the wet bits, but lots of people helped and were very kind.
Some more activities included abseiling off a very high bridge, climbing Jacob’s ladder, beck scrambling, archery and bush work. These were very fun, and many people overcame their fears of heights, of fire (we toasted marshmallows in bush work), and cold water. Beck scrambling in particular was one of the highlights as we waded fully clothed in a river of freezing water!
The night activities were also fun. On the first night we did orienteering around the Peat Rigg grounds, trying to find different stamps to put on a sheet. Some of the stamps were hard, but we found most of them. On the second night, we did ‘The Night Line’, which was where we were blindfolded and were doing a blind conga along a piece of rope, and we got sprayed with water by the teachers.
We had plenty of time to rest in the evenings. We were given until 21:00 after our activities had finished to chill with friends and play games in the common room. Everyone made at least one new friend at Peat Rigg. It was an amazing place to go and have lots of fun.
The bus ride there was quite nice – we had plenty of things to do, and the bus ride back was also very smooth. The getting ready to leave part was efficient and we had some very nice barbecues and sweet treats like hot chocolate and a small tuck shop. Peat Rigg is an amazing place and pretty much no one leaves without an
We also had a shout-out room point scheme, so if anyone in your room got a shout-out, your room got one point, and if your room was tidy in the morning and you went to sleep with no talking in the evening, you got ten room points.
Overall, Peat Rigg is one of the most amazing places that I and
• The School Council now has a popular Podcast on Spotify, parents and the community can catch up on current plans and ideas. They have also supported the design and development of our new spiritual garden (alongside St Gregory's trust). Children are now able to relax near the water fountain and read for pleasure during their breaktimes and lunchtimes.
• Children have engaged with some fantastic sport events this year. Children have been given vast opportunities to represent the school. The highlight of the year being our girl's football team making it to the England Finals!
• We have become a Picture News Advocate School this year; the children have really enjoyed learning about current topical news. All children are becoming fantastic at reflecting on current affairs and the Christian value of the week.
• The children have enjoyed a plethora of school trips and visitors in school this year, including a trip to London and Peat Rigg.
Developing strong relationships with St Gregory's Church and the local community has been key for us this year. Children now enjoy visits to Church for a short service, followed by juice with the congregation every Wednesday.
As a team we understand the importance of good communication. Staff now send weekly Pings to update parents on what children have done that week and what is coming up. Our new style SWAY Newsletters has allowed us to share more photos and

• We continue to provide all children with their own laptop or iPad.
• This year, we have gained the Gold Sports Mark! The children have really enjoyed taking part in lots of cluster sport competitions such as cross country, football, netball and athletics – it’s been wonderful seeing our teams make it through to the second rounds and in some cases (like cross country) to the finals!
• The nativity and our summer productions of Annie were huge successes.
• The children have loved working with other schools in the federation to enhance their learning. There have been shared WW2 days, computing projects and lots of joint school trips.
The children continue to enjoy an Outdoor Schools day each half term as part of our curriculum. Mrs Lerigo has worked very hard to make the woods a very exciting learning environment.
• Our service children have enjoyed taking part in a range of events such as Armed Forces Day and a variety of activities as part of our Hero’s club.
July saw our second Synergy Schools Sports Day with all Key Stage 2 pupils from all 4 schools competing for their houses at Catterick Athletics Stadium.
Approximately 300 parents and relatives watched the event. All the children took park in a range of field events from the long and triple jump to the javelin and shot put. A range of track events were also on offer. Hurdles, sprints, long distance races were all competed for. Children received medals and were awarded points for their performances which all went towards the overall federation house winner won by the Blue House this year!
It was great to see all the children make new friends from different schools. It was lovely to see so many parents and spectators supporting the event. The children tell us that it’s become one of the best days of the school year!
• We have created a wonderful new reading snug using one of the sheds outside which allows the children to relax and read for pleasure during their breaktimes.
• We have continued to provide all children with their own device to use at home and at school and we’re in the process of upgrading the devices with the support of FOPS.
• Our fabulous new dining room is complete and is being enjoyed by all of the children. We have appointed a fantastic new cook, Miss Witts, and the quality of the meals has massively improved.
• We continue to be a Picture News Advocate School and this year; the children have really enjoyed learning about and leading assemblies about current news issues.
• This year, we have gained the Gold Sports Mark this year! Due to the wonderful success of last year’s adventure, all our Year 4 pupils took part in an overnight camp out on the school grounds. These fantastic experiences were organised by Mrs. Emma Lerigo (Forest School Leader) and Mrs. Anna Smith (Parent Governor).
Due to the number of Year 4 pupils across the federation, 2 separate events were organised. 1 took place at Crakehall CE Primary for pupils attending Crakehall, Leeming and Pickhill schools. A second event was then run at Brompton-on-Swale for their Year 4s.
What a fantastic experience this was for our children! Themed on the infamous ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!’, the children enjoyed the camping experience, cooking their own food, having to put their own tent up(!) and took part in a range of activities including a climbing wall, archery, an assault course and orienteering, to name but a few!
For many of our Year 4 children, this was the first time they had stayed away from home so this was a really big deal for them. A huge thank you goes out to our wonderful staff for making this such a brilliant experience for our pupils. This is already in the calendar again for next year!
The Swaledale Alliance provides Continuing Professional Development, school to school support and early teaching career training to a collaboration of over 50 primary schools across the north of North Yorkshire and Darlington.
Based at Brompton-on-Swale CE Primary School, the Alliance offers a variety of development programmes in state-of-the-art training and meeting facilities plus there is office space accessible to all partnership schools. Our Executive Officer, Margaret Thompson, runs the Alliance on a day-to-day basis with the support of Mrs Rachael Owen, our Administrator.
As Strategic Lead for the Swaledale Alliance, Mr Mike White chairs the Steering Group – a pro-active group of local headteachers who ensure the work of the Alliance meets the training and development needs of local primary schools.
As a key partner, the Swaledale Alliance is a valuable resource for Federation staff offering ‘on the doorstep’ access to professional development programmes and networking opportunities. The Alliance also works very closely with the Red Kite Teaching School Alliance, a leading provider of Teacher Training and CPD in North Yorkshire.
During the academic year 2022/23:
• 21 Federation teaching colleagues have attended curriculum networks developing their leadership skills, knowledge and expertise.
• 5 trainee teachers have successfully completed their teaching qualification, taking up posts from September 2023.
• Our Head of Schools accessed half-termly Headteacher network groups enabling them to keep up to date with the latest educational agendas and network locally with colleagues.
• Our SENCO, Tamara Hayman, supports the Alliance as a skills assessor on the CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
• Andrea Offord, one of our Co-opted Governors, leads workshops supporting school governors across the Alliance.
Working collaboratively across North Yorkshire and beyond, the Swaledale Alliance offers Federation staff, Governors and leaders access to a wealth of expertise on the doorstep.
The Federation employs a full-time IT technician who manages all our IT systems. We also lend out his services to other local schools to bring much needed funds back into the federation.
Andrew says, “As a senior ICT technician with the Federation, I am proud of my ability to quickly and efficiently solve IT-related issues. My goal is to ensure that technology is always an asset and never a hindrance to learning or teaching. My passion for providing technical support was ignited during the Covid pandemic when I helped people prepare for remote working. This experience inspired me to pursue a degree in the field to further my career and knowledge.
When Mr. White offered me this role, I seized the opportunity to gain valuable experience. However, I soon fell in love with the supportive environment provided by the Federation and the appreciation I received from staff and students when I resolved their technical issues. There’s no greater feeling than seeing someone’s smile return when I recover a piece of work they thought was lost forever!
In addition to solving IT-related issues, I also spend a lot of time researching more effective ways to use technology in the classroom. I am always on the lookout for cost-effective solutions to upgrade the technology available to staff and students. My goal is to ensure that everyone has access to the tools they need to succeed in a digital world.
I find this role incredibly fulfilling because our future is heavily influenced by technology. I want our pupils to understand its power and how it can make our lives easier and less stressful.
In May 2022, our Year 6 pupils from all 4 schools across the Federation, embarked on a fantastic experience, visiting our capital city on a 3 day residential visit. Molly, a Year 6 pupil from Pickhill has kindly written an article to share her experiences.

First stop, the Natural History Museum!”. Excited murmurs ran through the coach. We entered the ancient building into the enormous entrance hall. Treasures belonging to our universe sparkled under the midst of our history. Exhibitions

Today, we stepped back in time, into an open-air theatre. Shakespeare’ Globe was a worldwide phenomenon that we got to experience. Our workshop was great fun and interesting because we got to feel what an actor’s life was like.
Our final stop was Buckingham Palace. With the Union Jack flying high, it felt an honour to be within our King’s presence. London wasn’t just good for sightseeing or activities, but for realisations too. Realising the gratitude, we have towards our teachers and for how much they do for us. And for realising how nice it was for all four schools to be together. It was an excuse to meet new people. It was an excuse to have fun with friends. It was an excuse to have one of the best adventures for our final year of primary school.

It was great to see some of our Federation schools come together with local schools in the autumn term to take part in a friendly tournament, focused on making sure that as many children as possible got involved. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and made some new friends whilst doing it!
Our wonderful netball team had a fantastic morning at Bedale High School at the netball tournament. They played brilliantly and only went and won ! Thank you to all the staff at Bedale High School for organising the tournament!
Well done to both tag rugby teams that took part in the local schools’ competition. Brompton 2 finished in first place and Brompton 1 finished in second place! Great results, effort and sportsmanship from all our children!
After being placed very highly in the local cross country event, 15 of our fantastic athletes represented our 4 schools in the North Yorkshire Cross Country Finals at Giggleswick School. They all performed so well in what was very difficult, muddy conditions. There were some fantastic results- a second, fourth, fifth, sixth, ninth and many other strong placed finishes. We’re very proud of our athletes achievements but even more proud of their excellent behaviour, good manners and resilience to complete what was a difficult course. Well done everyone. P.S. We hope you like our team vests!
The sporting story of the academic year is undoubtably the Crakehall girls’ football team who managed to get themselves all the way through to the national finals of the primary school competition, an incredible achievement! The whole school were invited to come along and support. Captain Pippa takes up the story.
On the 7th of June, we travelled down to the King Power Stadium - The home of Leicester City FC.
When we were there, we played against the other regional champions: we were the champions of the North.
Firstly, we played against a team from Nottingham, they were excellent. Both teams had chances and we nearly scored, but we could have done with VAR as we thought the ball had crossed the line. Final Score 1 - 0 to them. After the first match, we had some recovery time whilst the other teams played. We had our picture taken with Pikachu (for some reason the competition was sponsored by Pokemon!), had a press conference and went into the home changing roomsthey had a bath tub the size of a swimming pool.
In the second game we came so close, but we just didn't have any luck, again a 1 - 0 defeat. After picking our heads up and rallying together, we headed into our final game. They had an amazing playmaker in the middle, but we saved our
