An insight into the future

annual report 2007

Thoughts from our CEO, India It gives me great honor in sharing with you our performance highlights, and my thoughts on how we ought to move ahead against the backdrop of the challenges that we are faced with. We at Children's Future India are working through four of our units for over 5650 children in Pune, Dabhol, Raigad and Mumbai, in the State of Maharashtra. Since April, 2005 CFI through its sponsorship program is focusing on five areas, namely educational aid, medical aid, nutritional aid, family development & community development. The sponsorship program of CFI, hence not only supports the sponsored children, but their families & the communities as well. In order to assess the effectiveness & impact of these programs, CFI has decided to evaluate the performance of its units. Charity has been our approach over the years. We must however now move from 'Charity' towards 'Sustainability.' This has been recognised by all the units and we are effectively

focusing our efforts towards sustainability. The data obtained through mid-term evaluation is valuable & would provide insights and a direction to the CFI efforts towards positive sustainability. The self-sustainability model is focussed on empowering the local Community Based Organizations and building their capacities in order to carry on their own villages/slums development responsibilities in the long run. I am grateful to all the staff of the four units & their beneficiaries for their cooperation and efforts. I am also grateful to Children's future Norway for their timely support, guidance and cooperation during the FY'2007.

‘A CFI Success Story’

annual report 2007

A successful case study of a sponsored child GANESH HARIBHAU SHINDE At twenty years of age, Ganesh is a promising and upcoming artist with a long trail of hard work, sincere efforts and a constant helping hand of support behind him contributing to his success today. The story takes us back in the year 1991-92 when Ganesh was a tiny boy of nine years who received the sponsorship aid by CFN. Ganesh then was a shy kid who chose to remain in his shell rather than being sociable. He was the youngest child in the family and as his elder siblings were not very good academically, all the hopes of his parents were centered upon him. Ganesh was always good and sincere in academics. He never failed in any exam and always used to get 70% to 75% scores in the exam. But that was not all that made Ganesh special. It was his skills in drawing. He was always appreciated for his drawings and paintings. He always got an `A' grade in this subject in school, but it however did not end there. He never had an idea that this talent would become his career. Ganesh drew pictures as a hobby. To understand the socio economic background of his family, both parents of Ganesh are illiterate and the family represents the lowest economic strata of society. For them there always exists the constant struggle to make ends meet. The family dwells in a small room in the overcrowded slum of Jaibhavani nagar where economic prosperity never reaches the common people despite being in an urban area. In the ever growing struggle to earn bread for the family, Ganesh's parents were unable to provide him the much needed career counseling. After clearing the S.S.C exam Ganesh chose Commerce as his further line of education as he was unable to join the Govt. Polytechnic

College. Even as a college student, Ganesh was sincere and hard working. He again cleared his H.S.C with a 75% score. Meanwhile he had joined the youth group formed by sponsored students and had become an active member. During his days in college Ganesh cultivated the skill of making greeting cards and started selling them, earning small sums of money thereby. But this was still not at the top in his mind. He pursued senior college for graduation. During this period he continued to regularly attend the youth group meetings. He also had the opportunity to attend the national children's meet. When Mr. Terje Paulsen (ExExecutive Director-Fadderbarnas Framtid) visited India, Ganesh made a portrait of him, which he gifted it to him. He always loved to capture his delightful moments in the strokes of his pencil and brush. At this time Ganesh was aspiring to be a chartered accountant after his graduation but was totally unaware of what destiny had in store for him. Our social worker had been continuously observing his skills and passion for art and advised him to take it up as a full time career. She provided the necessary vocational guidance and carefully monitored his progress in the direction. Although excited by the thought of becoming a commercial artist, the going was not easy. Although good in drawing, Ganesh had no formal education or qualification in drawing. Passing the Govt recognized exams is mandatory for the admission into art school. Ganesh had to therefore begin with appearing for these exams. He successfully cleared this yet another hurdle and secured admission in the Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, a reputed art college in Pune.

09

annual report 2007

Ganesh thus moved a step forward towards establishing his own unique identity as an artist. Ganesh is now completing his GD Art (Govt. Diploma in Applied Art) from the Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya- Pune. During his years at the art school, he participated in several competitions and exhibitions, putting his name on many prizes and awards. Ganesh has exhibited some of his works at the Balgandharva Kala Mandir along with a couple of friends as well as his paintings were exhibited in Norway twice by Lions Club of Norway. This effort by these young boys was greatly appreciated. This was his first experience at exhibitions and he was indeed excited with his success. Recently Ganesh has had yet another achievement of the first prize at the state level for the spot landscape painting competition to his credit. This is the story of the frail little boy and the success story of a promising new artist. Ganesh cleared the entrance exam of C-DAC and secured admission for the Animation course in the Mumbai Education Trust at Bandra-

Mumbai. He continues to pass with flying colors and has been selected in a campus interview for the post of a Designer in Interactive AvenuesSantacruz-Mumbai. He earns Rs. 14,000/-p.m. This is the journey of a timid, shy little kid from deep deprivation to a smart, confident youth at the threshold of a brilliant and promising career. CFI-CFN takes pride in providing the constant guidance and support of a friend, philosopher and guide to many like Ganesh. Ganesh always remembers and acknowledges the help and guidance of his social worker from his childhood days. He feels a sense of gratitude towards the social worker for her help in shaping his career. The sponsorship aid has played an important role in his life by putting him on path to achieve his goasl in life, confident as ever that he shall do so someday. Our very best wishes shall remain with Ganesh forever. May his life reflect all the colors of success through his creations.

annual report 2007

VARSHA SUBHASH VASTA

Varsha was born in a typical family from the lowest income group in the Mumbai slums 24 years ago. Her father, an alcoholic was an unskilled labourer working with a civil contractor and was without a steady income. Her mother had to work as a domestic help with a couple of affluent families to support her own family of 6 persons. In such adverse conditions, proper education for the children was impossible. Varsha was enrolled as a sponsored child when she was in grade III which became a great relief for the family with the reduced economic burden of the family which always encouraged and motivated her family to continue her education. She studied in the ‘Madhavrao Bhagwat High School’ at Villa Parle ( E). At school, Varsha was very sharp in studies as well as good in extra curricular activities especially sports. She was one of the dependable team member of Kho - Kho team representing her school. She was later on trained and selected for the school Volley-Ball team. She represented both, school and State. At this stage her parents were very rigid and reluctant to send her out of Mumbai for sports competitions. Our social worker played a very important role in convincing her parents to permit her to participate in out station tournaments. This was a turning point in Varsha's career, which boosted her confidence even further. Our sponsorship project provided her with all the necessary support from time to time, which included nutrition, fees, all educational material and clothes. Our social worker has established very close association with her and has guided and facilitated all important decision making in her life. After successful completion of her secondary education, Varsha joined the ‘Sathey College’ by which time her sports talents were well identified thereby securing her a place college

team, where she represented the College, University and State. During this time Varsha realized the economic need of her family and start earning an income to support her family. During discussions with our social worker, she came across information about recruitment in the State Police Department. She was inspired and decided to pursue a job with the Police Department. It was indeed a dream come true for her as she grew up in a slum full of anti social elements and unlawful activities. Entry of a Policeman in the area seemed like a threat to all. She was determined to become a Policewoman and work hard to uphold the law. She gathered all the necessary information and got working, preparing for her selection. After series of exams and tests, she was selected as cadet at the Police Training School at Lonawala. After successfully completing her training, she is now posted at the Marol Police station, and she stays nereby. It was a dream come true when she visited the community where she grew up, in a Police Uniform, a proud moment not just for her family but the entire community. As a Policewoman, now she is an extremely responsible person and is highly respected in the community. She says, "It is my opportunity to serve my community and protect my people from all malpractices." She is fully updated with all legislation and the various procedures of the legal system to enforce Law and Order within society. She is ambitious and achievement oriented to grow to positions of responsibility within the Police Department. WE ARE HIGHLY PROUD OF VARSHA FOR WHAT SHE HAS ACHIEVED FROM BEING OUR SPONSORED CHILD. SHE IS A FINE EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY

Community Development

annual report 2007

As outlined in the vision of CFI, the organization would work as a catalyst to bring about social change and improve the quality of life through the overall development of deprived children, their families & communities. CFI has committed itself to helping children, their families & communities, regardless of caste, creed, religion or ethnic groups. a. To come together & share their thoughts ? To understand the importance of savings

During the year community development teams & social workers had conducted meetings with women from villages. During our meetings with the women we received important feedback. CFI has motivated & guided the target group to form new SHGs. For this we have initiated organizing meetings with women focusing on importance of saving, its value during emergencies & how the SHG would facilitate the sustainable development process of the family and community.

? To strengthen their capacity for livelihood

All the units are having youth groups which are our helping hands in conducting various community activities. Infrastructure Development

annual report 2007

Sustainable Community Development a. Hut Construction The units has already constructed 91 new houses during the year 2007. Under this activity we provide small amounts to beneficiaries considering need and priority of work. It includes repairing of roof, bathroom, latrine, outer plaster to protect from dampness, door,

repairing of walls etc. We are not paying the entire amount to the beneficiary, because we believe that the beneficiary must also contribute a part of the amount as well as provide the unskilled labour. Because of this financial assistance families have benefited before the monsoon season when they were in real need and had good and safe shelter.

27

Water Shed

annual report 2007

a. Fruit Tree Plantation Fruit & Timber yielding tree plantations are promoted in kitchen gardens, on farms & community grazing land. In Dabhol & Raigad units, this program is popular as these units are located in the rural & tribal areas. b. Rain Water Harvesting Plantation alone is not adequate unless survival of the plants is ensured. Watering plants in remote hilly areas is difficult. As a solution to this problem Kokan Krishi Vidyapith has developed the technique of 'Jalkund'. 4x1x1 m

or 2x1x1 m pits are dug before the rainy season. These pit are lined from the inside using Sylpolin Plastic. The rainwater is collected and stored in such pits and is used during the dry seasons to irrigate at least 10 Plants. CFI has given assistance for 3 Jalkund activities in Khondaran. The labour is provided by the villagers and the sylpolin is provided by CFI. c.

Well Deepening and Digging

The Dabhol unit has taken up this activity in Kondharan village with the participation of the villagers. This program was a successful and the villagers got adequate water as a result.

29

annual report 2007

d. 'Nallah Bunding' This was a technique used to counter water scarcity faced by the villagers in Dhopave from the month of February. A stream having its source in the nearby hills that flows through the village has been bunded. This water is then collected in a Tank and distributed among villagers through a pipeline. This spring goes dry after February but due to the bunding, a

sufficient reserve of water would be created. The plan also has the backing of experts from Kokan Krishi Vidyapeeth and has successfully been put into action. One step in this is widening the reservoir near the origin of stream. CFI provided monitory assistance for blasting the rocks, digging the pits near the origin. Villagers provided the labour through a 'Shramadan' program.

31

Higher Education

annual report 2007

The higher education scheme is aimed at are sponsored as well as non sponsored children from our field area. The scheme provides financial support to enable children to complete their higher education. This gives a boost to these students. Although the organization was providing the aid, families were themselves inspired to contribute for the courses. The social workers as well as the coordinators

personally paid visits to the institutes to obtain the information and to explore further opportunities after completion the courses. CFI encouraged the students to take up the vocational as well as the professional courses which enable the children to be self reliant at an early stage. Most of the children who have completed the courses have begun working using their skills.
