PROJECT LOCATION

Fort McKay is approximately 10km from the northern edge of both MLX East and West mine sites.

MLX East & West are extensions to our current Mildred Lake ore bodies and operations.

The MLX West mine site will be approximately 6km wide x 10km long.

The MLX East mine site will be approximately 3km wide x 8km long.

MLX WEST MINING AREA

• No new tailings pond.

• No new end pit lake containing tailings.

• Streams/creeks to be re-routed around MLX mine site and back to MacKay River.

• There will be an end pit lake filled with natural water (i.e. rain and snow melt).

• No water withdrawal from MacKay River.

• No increase in production – replacement ore for current mine.

• No processing plants in the MLX West location – ore being trucked to existing Mildred Lake facilities.

• MacKay River approximately one-half kilometre from mine limits.

• No land disturbance within onehalf kilometre of the MacKay River (except bridge location).

GEOGRAPHY /LANDSCAPE DESCRIPTION

MLX BOUNDARY

STANDS OF MERCHANTABLE TIMBER

• Majority of landscape (about 60%) is made up of wetlands with mainly small brush, muskeg and beaver ponds.

• Remainder is drier landscape made up of larger brush and boreal forest.

• Larger trees planned to be salvaged for commercial purposes.

MLX WEST ACCESS ROAD

• Temporary access road is approximately 10km long x 50m wide.

• Ties into AOSTRA road.

• Controlled access.

MILDRED LAKE EXTENSION PROJECT OVERVIEW

• Underside of bridge is 10 metres above river to reduce impact to, and improve, wildlife passage.

WEST ACCESS MACKAY RIVER BRIDGE

• Bridge barriers designed to contain all material from mining operations.

• Wildlife passage areas under bridge.

• Drainage collection ponds to contain/ control runoff.

• No permanent piers in the river (construction will require an additional temporary bridge – approx. 2 yrs).

• Bridge supports 2-way heavy hauler traffic.

• Key Dimensions: – 115m long – 43m wide

• Syncrude is committed to reclaiming the land that will be disturbed by mining the oil sands resource in its leases.

• Reclamation of the MLX Project areas will include mostly forested areas with some wetlands.

• End pit lake filled with natural water (i.e. rain and snow melt).

• The pictures on the next page show examples of different reclamation outcomes from reclaimed areas at the Mildred Lake site.

ABORIGINAL OPPORTUNITY

Syncrude will encourage and assist qualified local Aboriginal businesses to access opportunities in the MLX project

Syncrude will support capacity and capability building, e.g. support business development/expansion, encourage alliances/joint ventures.

Partnering with our Aboriginal neighbours in business and community ventures equals mutual success.

We have had a 55% increase in Aboriginal procurement from 2012.

Syncrude is committed to the development of local Aboriginal businesses.

Syncrude will continue to expand its procurement of goods and services from local Aboriginal businesses and encourages its contractors and suppliers to do the same.

To date, we have spent more than $2.4 billion with local Aboriginal businesses since 1992 including $198.5 million in 2015.

Local Aboriginal businesses having the capacity and capability to provide the goods and services required for construction of the MLX project will have opportunities to bid on contracts.

SYNCRUDE RESOURCE MINING DISCOVERY PROCEDURE

Syncrude has a procedure to manage any Indigenous artifacts/burial grounds on MLX site.

Syncrude conducted an above earth scan of the MLX mining area for an environmental assessment that accompanied the regulatory application.

No presence of ancient materials were identified.

Upon discovery of a suspected artifact such as fossilized bone or shell, the equipment operator must stop work immediately.

No further excavation is to take place within a 20-metre radius of the find until clearance is given from the designated Syncrude geologist.

Our geologists are then guided under the Historical Resources Act of Alberta.
