We are so excited for the gradual return to in-person performances this summer and fall and cannot wait to be in the same space as you while the music plays. This spring, we will continue to perform familiar favorites, like Franz Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, while we introduce you to our new friend, Quinn Mason, a spectacular young Black composer who is writing gorgeous music reflective of the time in which we’re living. We are thrilled to present Gospel Meets Symphony, which will feature local Gospel singers, and to share the stage with Natasha Paremski and Hannah White, a fabulous young violinist who is a member of the Sphinx Soloist program.

Symphoria Music Di rector Lawrence Loh, Music Director of Symphoria (Syracuse, NY), was named Music Director of the West Virginia Symphony commencing in the 2017-18 season. Mr. Loh concluded his 12-year tenure as Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic in 2017. Mr. Loh had a decade-plus association with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra where he currently leads annual pops and other select programs.

Mr. Loh’s previous positions include: Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Syracuse Opera; Resident Conductor of the of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra; Associate Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; Associate Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra.

Having a particular affinity for pops programming, Mr. Loh has been engaged for repeat performances with Chris Botti, Idina Menzel, Ann Hampton Callaway, the Texas Tenors and more.

He has assisted John Williams on multiple occasions and conducted numerous sold-out John Williams tribute concerts. He is particularly adept at conducting concerts synchronizing live orchestral music with film, and he is has lead Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Pixar in Concert, Disney in Concert, The Wizard of Oz and Singin’ in the Rain, among other concert productions.

Mr. Loh is active as a guest conductor, both in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to annual concerts in Pittsburgh and Dallas, his recent engagements include the Boston Pops (Tanglewood); Detroit Symphony; San Diego Symphony; Seattle Symphony; Buffalo Philharmonic; and the Cathedral Choral Society at the Washington National Cathedral. Past engagements include the National (Washington D.C.), Indianapolis, Tacoma, Utah, Naples, Knoxville, Florida, El Paso, San Luis Obispo, Edmonton, Colorado, Charleston (SC), Malaysia, Daejeon (South Korea) and Greater Bridgeport Orchestras. His summer appearances include the festivals of Sun Valley, Bravo Vail Valley, Aspen (CO), Mann Center in Philadelphia, Breckenridge, Las Vegas, Hot Springs (AR), the Kinhaven Music School (VT) and the Performing Arts Institute (PA). In the summer of 2016, he made his debut at Tanglewood, conducting Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony with the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra and returned in 2017 to conduct the Boston Pops.

Mr. Loh received his Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting from Yale, his Masters in Choral Conducting from Indiana University and his BA, and Certificate of Management Studies, from the University of Rochester. Lawrence Loh was born in southern California of Korean parentage and raised in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Jennifer have a son, Charlie, and a daughter, Hilary.

SEAN O’LOUGHLIN

Symphoria P rincipal Pops Conductor Sean O’Loughlin (b.1972) is Symphoria’s Principal Pops Conductor, and the newly appointed Principal Pops Conductor of the Victoria Symphony in Victoria, B.C. Canada. He is a fresh voice and a rising name in the music world. His music is characterized by vibrant rhythms, passionate melodies, and colorful scoring. Commissions from the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra highlight and showcase his diverse musical abilities.

As a conductor, he has led performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Hollywood the Vancouver Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Victoria Symphony and the Seattle Symphony amongst others. He was the assistant conductor and arranger for a production of Sgt. Pepper Live in Las Vegas featuring the band Cheap Trick. He has served as conductor for national and world-wide tours with Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan and the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration. He has also appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America with include such artists as Sarah McLachlan, Adele, Josh Groban,Josh Groban and NBC’s “A Very Pentatonix Christmas.” Recent collaborations Pentatonix, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Diana Ross, Journey, Melissa Etheridge, Weird Al Yankovic, Blue Man Group, Janelle Monáe, Audra McDonald, Hall and Oates, Gloria Estefan, the Indigo Girls, Diana Krall, Itzhak Perlman, Natalie Merchant, Chris Isaak, Pink Martini, Brandi Carlile, The Decemberists, Martina McBride, Josh Ritter, Gloria Gaynor and others. The Los Angeles Times calls his orchestrations “...magnificent and colorful” while adding “...even more dimension...” to the compositions. Through his growing number of commissioned and published works, Sean is excited to continue contributing to the rich history of orchestral and wind band literature. His music is published by Excelcia Music, Hal Leonard and Carl Fischer. He is a frequent guest conductor with professional orchestras around the country and abroad. An annual ASCAP Special Awards winner, Sean was a composition fellow at the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles, and holds composition degrees from New England Conservatory and Syracuse University.

SARAH CROCKER VONSATTEL, violin A native of Central New York, violinist Sarah Crocker Vonsattel currently resides in New York City where she has been a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 2008. She has previously held positions in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Symphony.

Ms. Vonsattel leads an active life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral musician. She has appeared as concerto soloist with the Coastal Symphony of Georgia, the musicians of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Syracuse Symphony, and the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, among others. Recent chamber music performances include appearances at Parlance Chamber Concerts, the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series, Classical Tahoe, Bargemusic, the Bronxville Chamber Music Series, and the New Marlborough House Concerts.

As a founding member of the Verklärte Quartet, Ms. Vonsattel was a Grand Prize Winner of the 2003 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, leading to concert tours in the U.S. and Italy with this ensemble. Also a proponent of new music, Sarah has appeared with the iO string quartet, the Talea Ensemble, the League of Composers Orchestra, and Sequitur in New York and can be heard on the Bridge Records label performing the music of Poul Ruders and Tod Machover.

Sarah Vonsattel has appeared as both performer and faculty member at festivals including the Orfeo International Music Festival (Italy), the Wellesley Composers Conference (Massachusetts), and the Musical Friends Academy (Tunisia). She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she was a student of David Updegraff, and a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Ronald Copes and Naoko Tanaka. Sarah lives in Manhattan with her husband, a concert pianist, and their two young children.

Mozart 's Fifth Violin Concerto Tonight’s concert, featuring music stretching over four centuries, is bracketed by two works that, in radically different ways, grow out of difficult times. We open with a brand new piece, Reflection on a Memorial, a work for string orchestra composed less than a year ago by the young Black composer Quinn Mason (b. 1996). In a sense, it’s very much of its time. It was originally commissioned by the Dallas Symphony (and premiered by tonight’s conductor, Larry Loh), for “a concert that was remembering and honoring victims of racial violence,” and Quinn intended it to “pay tribute to the memory of those victims that we’ve lost in the past year or so while at the same time looking ahead to a brighter future.” Yet neither the title nor the music limits its applicability: “It can,” says Quinn, “reflect any memorial for any event or person”—and, in fact, it’s already been scheduled for a 9/11 memorial next year.

Under the unusual tempo marking Requiem, it begins with a theme in the violas (“for me,” says Quinn, “the viola has the same qualities as the human voice”). The composer likens this theme to Gregorian chant, but at the same time, at least to my ears, it also has a striking Mahlerian poignance. The lead is soon taken up by a solo cello, with a rich densely woven background that makes clear why Quinn calls it a “texture-based piece.”

A faster “outburst of grief” follows, moving to a passage that anticipates a “brighter future,” culminating in a long crescendo built on a striking series of “stationary chords that expand outward, getting brighter and brighter until it’s blinding.” It’s “only brief, because we still have lots to worry about.” The passage cuts off and the “solo cello comes back in with a restatement of the viola theme at the beginning, but it’s intense, because I’ve set it up in a very high register on the cello. That just reminds us that even though we’ve made progress, even though we’ve remembered this person or this event, and even though we’re looking ahead to a brighter future, definitely it’s not over.”

The concert ends with the Symphony No. 2 by Robert Schumann (1810–1856). The Schumanns toured Russia in 1843–1844 (Clara’s piano-playing making more of an impression than Robert’s compositions), but Robert was stricken by one of his bouts of acute depression, and on returning to Germany, they settled in Dresden, hoping it would be less stressful than Leipzig, where they had been living before. In the aftermath of this collapse, he composed the so-called Second Symphony. (As with Mendelssohn and so many composers of the time, the familiar numbering of Schumann’s symphonies doesn’t line up with dates of composition). A tightly organized piece, with thematic repetitions linking all four movements, the work, like much of his music, is full of cryptograms and references, especially references to Beethoven and Bach. But for all its intellectual intricacy, it has

remained in the repertoire largely for its celebration of the human spirit.

Did the writing of the symphony help Robert’s recovery, represent it, or both? It’s hard to know for sure, but he referred to it as a “souvenir of a dark period,” and as you move through it, there’s a good chance you’ll hear a narrative of victory. Although the Second is written in the bright key of C Major (indeed, almost aggressively so, since all four movements end in that key), it has plenty of darkness. It begins with a brass motif, repeated in different ways throughout, that at first seems to be pleading, its sense of prayer amplified by chorale-like music later on; the Scherzo is laced with desperation; and the poignant third movement is as emotionally profound as anything in any of his symphonies. Yet the finale represents a hard-won celebration, employing a exultant version of that opening motif and ending in unambiguous light.

In between these two works born in difficulty, we have a far less anxious work, the Violin Concerto No. 5, the most popular of the five violin concertos that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) wrote in the brief period between April and December 1775. By sheer coincidence, tonight’s soloist, Sarah Vonsattel, played the first movement of this concerto with the Syracuse Symphony in high school when she was a concerto competition winner—and she finds it “especially interesting to revisit it now, having played so much Mozart opera” as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. She feels the connection especially strongly in the second movement, where she see herself in the world of Cosí fan tutte: “I feel like I’m the soprano, holding these long melodies with string textures underneath me.” But the whole piece is operatic, starting from the striking opening, where there’s a “big orchestra tutti, but then the violin comes in Adagio: It makes you stop and catch your breath. It’s as if the curtain opens and the soprano is alone in the middle of a crowd scene. Everything else fades away, and you just have this beautiful line.”

Speaking of opera, you might also hear a connection between the finale and Mozart’s later Abduction from the Seraglio, since they both incorporate what was viewed by Western audiences of the day as “Turkish” music—including, in the concerto, the use of col legno (playing with the back of the bow) to imitate percussion.

Of course, it’s not in any way authentic, being no more truly Turkish than Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade is truly Middle Eastern. But like everything else in what Sarah rightly calls the most “creative” of Mozart’s violin concertos, it radiates both warmth and creativity, and offers its fair share of surprises.

Violinist Hannah White has soloed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Hannah has been described by The New York Times as, “terrific… expressive… enthusiastic”, and NY Concert Review wrote “phenomenal…blaze… commanded … perfect intonation and flair”, and Cleveland.com as “clinched her Severance Hall debut…razor-sharp… future is bright”.

Hannah began her solo career at age nine with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and since then performed with Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra, South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra,Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, and Madison SymphonyOrchestra among others. She has performed at numerous prestigious venues including:Carnegie Hall, Severance Hall, Kennedy Center, Rock and Roll hall of fame, Ordway Center, Harris Theater, New World Center, Disneyland, National Gallery of Art Museum, and Aspen Summer Camp. Ap ril in Paris

For centuries, Paris has been a magnet for artists, and this afternoon’s concert features orchestral works by three non-French composers who were drawn to the City of Light in the eighteenth century. We begin with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791).

Years after initial visits as a youthful prodigy, Mozart was again attracted to Paris—one city on a long European tour from 1777–1779—in the hopes of finding employment away from his stultifying home town of Salzburg. The Paris stop was a low point in Mozart’s career, for reasons both personal (his mother, traveling with him, died while there) and professional (the employment possibilities did not materialize). Still, he wrote some of his great early works in Paris, including the Symphony No. 31, which took advantage of the opportunity to write for what was, at the time, a fairly large and accomplished orchestra (this was his first symphony with clarinets).

The symphony was written with Parisian taste in mind.

It was, for instance, in three movements rather than four (as had increasingly become his norm), and orchestral brilliance took priority over counterpoint and complex thematic development. Mozart took on this idiom with with a subtle vein of irony. For instance, French style demanded that Allegro movements open with what was known as the premier coup d’archet—a loud tutti passage, often in unison. He followed that tradition to launch the first movement, but pulled the rug out from under his listeners in the finale, which begins with eight measures of hushed contrapuntal music on just the violins—followed by an unexpected forte smack from the whole orchestra.

No one, however, was offended by the challenge to decorum. In fact, the effect won over the first audience so completely that they applauded mid-movement (concert decorum was different in those days). Mozart, by the way, wrote two exceptionally elegant Andantes for this symphony. It’s not entirely clear which was the original; tonight, we’ll be hearing the one in 6/8.

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745–1799) came to Paris well before Mozart did, in 1753. The llegitimate son of a Guadeloupe planter and his slave, he defied cultural conventions, achieving astounding success and moving in the highest social circles. It would have been enough had he just been a military leader, a political revolutionary, an abolitionist, and one of Europe’s greatest fencers. But he was also one of the foremost musicians of his age, a dazzling violin virtuoso and a composer of symphonies, chamber music, and at least six operas (mostly lost)—including one with a text by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, author of Dangerous Liaisons. Saint-Georges also wrote around a dozen violin concertos (there’s some dispute about the exact number), which of course were calculated to show off his own expertise.

Today, we hear the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G, op. 2/1, composed in 1773. There’s a good chance you’ve never heard it, since after his death, Saint-Georges’s works

were largely forgotten—a familiar occurrence amplified, in his case, by racial prejudice. Over the past few years, however, his works have returned to the spotlight and his genius has been recognized again, giving us the paradoxical situation of encountering first-rate old works that are still new for audiences and performers.

Today’s soloist, Hannah White, for instance, is performing it for the first time this afternoon. She has found it “a wonderful experience learning and exploring this musical gem,” and she “can’t wait for the absolute privilege of playing it with Symphoria.”

In a sense, what Hannah calls this “elegant, joyful” concerto is a far cry from the knottier works that are her favorites, the Brahms and the Sibelius. If you listen carelessly, in fact, Saint-Georges’s might seem similar in spirit to the light, untroubling violin concertos Mozart wrote two years later. While the music is untroubling for the audience, however, it’s not so for the soloist. Indeed, says Hannah, her “surprisingly virtuosic” part is even more difficult than the notoriously treacherous ones in the Brahms and Sibelius. Why? She calls the concerto “leapy,” for reasons that will be clear when you hear it; and because of the wide jumps that give it its special character, “it doesn’t fit in the hand quite like they do.”

What should you look out for? It’s a delightful work from beginning to end, but it’s also a “profoundly beautiful” one. Hannah points in particular to a passage in the middle of the first movement, where it goes into the minor, giving her a chance to bring out her romantic tendencies. You will also enjoy the sweetness of the slow movement, richly ornamented in a way that never chokes off the music’s melodic beauty.

Haydn was also drawn to Paris—in his case, though, the draw was less the attractions of the city itself than the inducement of the Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

For aside from everything else, Saint-Georges was a conductor, too, heading up Le Concert des Amateurs and its successor Le Concert de la Loge Olympique, arguably the top Parisian orchestras of the day. And in that capacity, with the support of Count D’Ogny, in the mid-1780s he commissioned six symphonies from Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), at the time arguably Europe’s most sought-after composer. The Symphony No. 82 (1786) is the first of the six in the standard numerical catalog of Haydn’s works, but actually the last of the set to be composed. Haydn, like Mozart, made the most of the resources available to him, and the symphony has all the vivacity and good humor that Saint-Georges and D’Ogny expected from him. Especially memorable is the drone-based music that laces the finale. Reminiscent of the music that traditionally accompanied dancing bears, it eventually led the symphony to take on the nickname “The Bear.”
