Welcome to Sydney Youth Orchestras’ 2019 Season.

When I started playing the violin at the age of 5, receiving lessons, practicing at home, occasionally performing in front of my dogs and my forbearing pretend audience, I wasn’t sure what to make of it all.

I had an amazing teacher, supportive parents and enjoyed listening to music; but a lingering longing sensation of this mysterious something that I couldn’t pinpoint stayed with me and grew ever stronger. Fortunately, at the age of 6, I went to my first music camp, meeting other young kids, and I realised what this magical missing ingredient was: performing with other musicians, making music together. From one week to another during this camp, my musical world was turned upside down, and I became ever more motivated and passionate about playing the violin.

I have been a member of the SYO for several years.

This wonderful organisation keeps igniting and nourishing the passion for classical music in us young musicians and for performing together in front of audiences. With so many exciting programs and events planned for 2019, this coming year promises to stir and stimulate many more dormant and already vibrant musical passions. I can’t wait to get started.

Sydney Youth Orchestras is the leading orchestral training provider in New South Wales, forging dynamic relationships between young musicians and leading music educators, conductors, performers and audiences.

For 46 years SYO has been an engine room of excellence, produced some of Australia’s finest musicians and educators, and built a community of classical music lovers. Currently comprising 13 orchestras and ensembles, SYO provides a weekly structured orchestral training program for over 550 musicians aged 6 – 25 years.

the sydney youth orchestra Led by Chief Conductor Alexander Briger AO, The Sydney Youth Orchestra is where Sydney’s most talented young musicians - those who aspire to the highest level of orchestral performance and a future as an orchestral musician - are to be found.

stage 4 sinfonia Stage Four is the springboard to the Symphonic Orchestral Program. Musicians explore core repertoire from the Baroque to late Romantic periods, requiring a mature understanding of orchestral playing and strong technical skills.

syo philharmonic Conducted by celebrated Australian musician, composer and educator Brian Buggy OAM, SYOP welcomes a full symphony orchestra to tackle sweeping orchestral works.

stage 3 strings Stage Three offers intermediate players the chance to further develop their ensemble playing while extending their technical and aural skills.

stage 2 strings Musicians in Stage Two are introduced to increasingly complex orchestral concepts and refine the skills required to effectively and confidently sight read, progressively master challenging rhythms, and interpret musical markings with deeper stylistic understanding. stage 1 strings Stage One is where many young players gain their first ensemble experience. Young musicians are introduced to playing in an instrumental section, and learn vital ensemble skills.

alexander briger AO

christoper lawrence

Described by both Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti as a “wonderful conductor and musician”, Australian/Russian conductor, Alexander Briger, is one of Australia’s preeminent musicians. He also worked closely with both Sir Charles Mackerras, where he developed a strong knowledge of the music of Leoš Janáček, and Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble InterContemporain. He has premiered works by composers such as Arvo Pärt, Bruno Mantovani, Mark Anthony Turnage, Elena Kats Chernin and Simon Holt and is considered a specialist in the works of Janáček, Mozart and Beethoven. In 2016 he was awarded the Order of Australia for “services to music as a leading conductor”.

Christopher Lawrence’s career spans more than 40 years of broadcasting in radio and television. He has written and produced dozens of radio documentaries (ranging from composer Hector Berlioz to a history of the songs and stories of Australian waterfront workers), presented an interview series for the Ovation channel, and conducted most of Australia’s capital city symphony orchestras.

In 2010, he founded the Australian World Orchestra, of which he is the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, and in 2011 conducted their award-winning inaugural season at the Sydney Opera House with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, which was subsequently released on Deutsche Grammophone, as well as leading the orchestra on their Asia tours to Singapore in 2016 and India in 2018.

As an orchestral and opera recording producer he has been awarded an International Emmy for Performing Arts, three ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) Awards, a Churchill Fellowship, and the Editors’ Choice Award at the 1992 Cannes Classical Awards in France. Christopher worked extensively with the late Stuart Challender and the Sydney Symphony on a series of breakthrough recordings of Australian music. He also accompanied them on their historic Bicentennial Tour of the United States in 1988, producing recordings with Dame Joan Sutherland in the Kennedy Center and the United Nations General Assembly Hall.out of his Breakfast program in the 1990s broke sales records in the Australian classical music industry, each achieving Platinum sales status.

Brian Buggy OAM was born and educated in Brisbane. He played trumpet in his own jazz band during his school days, won a violin scholarship to the Queensland Conservatorium and toured as principal trumpet of the Borovansky Ballet Orchestra.

James Pensini is one of the leading conductors of youth instrumental music in Australia and alongside his work at Sydney Youth Orchestras he is Head of Instrumental Music P-12 at Santa Sabina College.

At 21 he became Musical Director for “The Firm,” J C Williamson Theatres.

For 15 years he directed most of the great musicals of the era throughout Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, before teaching for 35 years at Knox Grammar School in Sydney, “retiring” in 2007.

For 11 years, Brian Buggy conducted and presented the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s very popular Family Concerts, taking these productions to ABC orchestras in Melbourne, Hobart and Perth and to New Zealand.

Since 2007 he has conducted the Sydney Youth Orchestra Philharmonic and guestconducts and tutors for several schools.

In 1998, Brian Buggy was awarded an Order of Australia Medal, for services to Music, particularly in the areas of Theatre and Youth Orchestras.

As a conductor James has worked in and run many of the finest instrumental music programs for young people at a school and representative level in Australia and has been privileged to lead multiple international tours to the United States and Europe. James is a former National Board member of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association and is regularly called upon as an adjudicator and guest conductor.

James currently conducts the Western Sydney Youth Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Orchestra for the Sydney Youth Orchestras and in 2017 James conducted the Sydney Youth Orchestra on a European Tour including workshops with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

John Ockwell has a longstanding relationship with Sydney Youth Orchestras: he was a member of the cello section when the SYO started in 1973, and by the 1980s he was conducting junior string groups for the organisation. His inspiration as a musician and educator was SYO founder Peter Seymour, who was remarkable, he says, for not getting ‘bogged down in admin work’ and being ‘always interested in giving young people the experience of music itself’.

Dr Irina Andreeva began her studies in Novosibirsk Russia. She studied with M.Liberman and G. Turchaninova - tutors of renowned Russian violinists Vadim Repin and Maxim Vengerov. At the age of 11 Irina performed Lalo’s ‘Symphony Español‘ with Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra and later became the youngest member of this orchestra at the age of 18.

John Ockwell is now director of Orchestra and Strings at Fort St High School in Sydney (a post he has held for the past 14 years) as well as a member of the school’s Music faculty, and he is co-conductor of The Arts Unit NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra. In previous years he has been assistant conductor and a steering committee member for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Education Program, and for five years he was the Coordinator of the D.E.C. (Department of Education and Communities NSW) Primary String Festival.

Her teaching career began over 25 years ago in Russia. Since then she has taught and worked with youth orchestras in Europe, New Zealand, the Kingdom of Tonga and Australia. She has led many ensembles winning prestigious competitions in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2010 Dr Andreeva was awarded the Order of the Member of the Royal Household of the Kingdom of Tonga for her services to Music; Irina considers this as one of the highlights of her career alongside her performance of the Australasian premier of Darius Milhaud’s Second Concerto for Viola and Orchestra with NZSM orchestra in Wellington New Zealand in 2013, this work being the subject of her doctorate.

Peter is a graduate of the Sydney Kathryn Crossing trained as a classical Conservatorium of Music where he studied violinist from the age of seven. cello, performance and music education.

Kathryn attained her Bachelor of Music Peter was principal cellist in Sydney Youth from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Orchestra under maestros Richard Gill and in 2005. She also has an Associate from Stuart Challender and toured with SYO to Trinity College London and her AMusA Singapore. Peter performed in Australian performance diplomas. seasons of the Bolshoi Ballet, Russian Kathryn was a member of the SBS Radio State Ballet and Rudolf Nureyev with & Television Orchestra where she toured the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra.

Italy in 2002 and Russia, in 2004.

He was principal cellist in the Balmain Sinfonia and performs regularly in string quartets and trios. A versatile performer, Peter also plays bass in a variety of genres - funk, jazz, musical theatre and traditional Irish music.

Throughout his career as a music educator Peter has led comprehensive string programs at independent schools.

He currently leads a team of thirty-two music tutors in an extensive private tuition program at Kambala. Peter has had extensive experience conducting orchestras and string ensembles of all ages and stages. He studied conducting under Harry Spence Lyth and in master classes of Symphony Australia.

In late 2005, Kathryn toured Indonesia with the Bluescope Steel Youth Orchestra as their Associate Concertmaster and in 2010 she toured France, Germany and Swizerland with the same group as their violin tutor. Kathryn was Concertmaster and frequent soloist for the Mosman Orchestra and section leader for the Bourbaki ensemble.

Kathryn taught at the Wollongong Conservatorium for 4 years before returning to Sydney to start her own studio, Crossing Strings. Kathryn is currently the director of the string program at Cromer Public and is passionate about music education.

Victoria took up the violin when she was six. Millions of notes later, it evokes the same wonder. Victoria performs for the Australian Institute of Music, Australian Musicians Academy, the Mostly Mozart Festival, Manly Music Club, the Ryde & Hills District Music Club, the Art Gallery of NSW concert series, the St Andrew’s Young Concert Artists Series, Halcyon and Chronology Arts, as well arranging her own performances.

Originally from Orange in rural NSW, Rachel is a freelance cellist, string pedagogist and conductor. She studied ‘cello with Susan Blake at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Anthea Scott-Mitchell at Newcastle Conservatorium.

As a soloist, Victoria has performed with the SBS Radio and Television Orchestra, the Young Symphonists Orchestra, the Queensland Youth Orchestra, the PLC Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, the Balmain Sinfonia, Sydney Sinfonia Orchestra and the Mueller International Chamber Orchestra. In 2019, Victoria will perform the Bruch Concerto with The Metropolitan Orchestra.

Victoria hopes to inspire the next generation of musicians and provide accessible opportunities for children.

Rachel has played as principal cellist with the Christ Church Camerata, Orange Symphony Orchestra, Newcastle Conservatorium Orchestra, Lake Macquarie Philharmonic as well as baroque ensembles Scots Kirk Band and Matinee Musicale.

For many years Rachel was cellist for pop-folk outfit Hudson Arc. In 2013, as Artistic Director of NIMA (Newcastle Improvised Music Association) Rachel was fundamental in establishing the Newcastle Youth Orchestra.

Since relocating to Sydney in 2015, she has directed many string programs in the public schools of Sydney’s Inner West.

jonathan whitting

Joanne’s love of music began at an early age when she began learning the violin at the age of 4. She has completed her Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music in violin performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has undertaken courses overseas at the Mozarteum, Salzburg and Nice Academie, France. Joanne has participated in a number of Symphony Australia conducting courses. As an emerging musician, Joanne has been a member of Sydney Sinfonia and has participated in Australian Youth Orchestra programs.

Jonathan Whitting studied violin with Robyn Kemp, Faina Krel and Janet Davies.

He attended the Conservatorium High school and then continued to the University of Sydney, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Diploma in Education.

Joanne now regularly performs with a number of orchestras and ensembles such as Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and enjoys working as a freelance musician.

Her passion for music and love of working with children has led to her working in a number of Sydney schools as a violin teacher and conductor of ensembles Joanne’s first experience with SYO was as a violin tutor for the string orchestral program many years ago. Now as a resident conductor, she is an extremely valuable member of a dynamic team, providing Sydney with unmatched string orchestral education.

He worked alongside leading educators Kim Waldock and Chris Belshaw at Sydney International Grammar School and then moved into the role of Director of Strings at SCEGGS. Jonathan is passionate about enriching the lives of young people with a love of music-making. As an alumnus of Sydney Youth Orchestras he credits much of his love of music to the experiences he gained as a young person at SYO. Being taught the fundamentals of orchestral playing at SYO by inspirational conductors such as Joy Lee, Chris Nicholls and John Painter, had a profound effect on his life and he is thrilled to be joining the SYO family in 2019.

Chief Conductor Alexander Briger AO turbocharges the 2019 SYO season opener with music of unstoppable force.

Czech composer Janáček’s rhapsody Taras Bulba depicts the violent Cossack wars against Poland in the 16th century, while the ruthlessly self-critical Brahms deemed his Third Symphony to be ‘nearly perfect’.

These powerhouse spectaculars are preceded

by Verdi’s most impetuous operatic overture, The Force of Destiny, performed by the SYO Philharmonic under conductor Brian Buggy OAM.

Is there a better-known moment in classical music than the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth?

The Sydney Youth Orchestra and its Chief Conductor, Alexander Briger AO take on the most famous work from thirty-something Beethoven’s crisis-ridden decade in a breakthrough experience for every young orchestral player.

Before Beethoven’s tempest, the suite from Copland’s 1944 ballet Appalachian Spring brings peace and a hymn to simplicity in a classic of musical Americana.

This performance is a collaboration with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, conducted by Brett Weymark and features Australia’s top vocal soloists Taryn Fiebig, David Greco, Andrew Goodwin and Fiona Campbell.

One of the most universally popular adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy of young love, Prokofiev’s 1938 ballet score has it all: thrilling virtuosity from a huge orchestra, dazzling sword fights in the streets of Verona, and a Balcony Scene of pure sound that transcends the Bard’s immortal words.

The 2019 season’s breathtaking finale also includes Elgar’s sublime Enigma Variations and a toast to the end of the school year from the SYO Philharmonic and conductor Brian Buggy with Brahms’ rollicking Academic Festival Overture.

sydney youth chamber ensemble project

2019 sees the re-establishment of the development of the Sydney Youth Chamber Ensemble under the guidance of Umberto Clerici.

Led and programmed by acclaimed Principal cellist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Umberto Clerici, this ensemble will provide top SYO musicians the opportunity to engage with complex chamber repertoire, artistic collaborations and new works, often in alternative performance spaces and as part of bespoke events. The program will also feature key SYO alumni providing an avenue for ex-SYO musicians now emerging as professional artists to remain connected with the organisation.

SYCE is an invitation only ensemble, based on the project and repertoire requirements as determined by the Artistic Director, Umberto Clerici.

In 2019, Sydney Youth Orchestras will partner with the Sydney Opera House as part of their Utzon Music Series Masterclasses, enabling select SYO musicians the rare opportunity to work with the Utzon Music Series performers, the leading international ensembles and soloists of today.

In these exclusive sessions, SYO musicians will gain insight on the essentials of solo and chamber performance from these exceptional Utzon Music Series artists.

The SYO Philharmonic, led by esteemed music educator and conductor Brian Buggy OAM, is an orchestra that focuses on the masterworks of the Romantic period and twentieth-century This orchestra returns to Canberra in 2019, after a thrilling performance of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in 2018 in Lewellyn Hall.

The Mosman Concert Series is run by the Mosman Music Club which has been presenting concerts since 1946 in the excellent acoustics and ambience of the Blessed Sacrament Church.

These are not just concerts of “something for everyone”, every concert is superb in itself and every concert is for everyone. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Entry to the concerts is by program, available at the door, and includes free afternoon tea and lucky door prizes.

In June, join James Pensini and Symphonic Wind Orchestra for an afternoon of classical favourites that the whole family will enjoy.

The conductor started with a tap-tap-tap and the strings began to sing la-la-la.

Then the flutes joined in with a tootle toot too and the sound of the drums shook the room with a boom-boom-boom!

Meet the Orchestra concerts are a wonderful way to introduce orchestral music to families and young children.

Performed by Sydney Youth Orchestras, these relaxed and informal concert have been specially designed to be interactive, informative and most importantly, lots of fun! The SYO conductor and SYO musicians will help guide children through the different wind instruments and their individual sounds.

Children are encouraged to join in. Stomp your feet to the timpani drum beat, clap your hands to the big, brass tubas, dance gently to the delicate flutes and wiggle along to the clarinet!

syo international tour

SYO is thrilled to continue to connect our musicians to the very best international orchestras, conductors and musical education institutions through our international touring program.

In April 2019 the International Tour Orchestra made up of musicians from all five senior SYO orchestras will embark on a two week journey through the UK. The tour will give students the opportunity to perform in world-renowned venues, work with leading classical musicians from orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, HallĂŠ Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and attend performances by world-class orchestras.

The tour will also include audition seminars with the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal College of Music in London and include visits to important sites in each city.

SYO Summer School program combines high-level music making, creativity, exploration and personal development.

This program is open to all school-aged students in NSW. Summer School is suitable for young musicians aged 6–18 years. Students are placed in ensembles which match their abilities and extend their knowledge and experience. With an emphasis on developing team and ensemble skills in musicians, the program is packed with choir rehearsals, large ensemble playing, masterclasses and tutorials, music theory, info sessions, and of course the opportunity to make friends and have fun.

SYO Summer School finishes with ensemble showcases and concerts to highlight the week’s achievements.

scholarships SYO is committed to ensuring all talented musicians regardless of financial circumstances have the same opportunity to be part of SYO. With the very generous support of many private donors, companies and foundations we provide a number of full scholarships for eligible regional applicants.

For one day, hundreds of SYO musicians and alumni take over the city in a massive celebration of youth music.

Stroll around the city and enjoy performances by the orchestras and ensembles of SYO at iconic locations including Martin Place, Pitt Street, and Circular Quay.

These performances are not just background music this is genuine busking. Come along and join the fun, and if you like what you hear, drop a coin into the bucket!

All funds raised builds a stronger and a more enterprising SYO, by supporting our instrument bank, music library, critical business infrastructure, and helping SYO to find a permanent home.
