1.1 Site History RALEIGH’S ROOTS

From Slavery to Freedom African Americans in Raleigh, North Carolina have created these amazing rich communities that still exist to this day. We begin to explore the history of Raleigh and the effects it has had on the minority communities throughout time. As we know critical events such as segregation, slavery, jim-crow, and eventually “freedom” has

Raleigh Established 1792 as Capital of North Carolina

•

Raleigh was different after the civil war. Although Licoln had made his intent to free slaves on September 22, 1862 slaves were not freed until the end of the war around 1865.

•

“While many farm estates had families that were able to do all of the work, they were generally on the outskirts of the city, in the county. The family homes and estates that were within the city boundaries generally had sla ves who lived and worked both inside and outside the home.

•

On May 29, 1865 Woods Holden was appointed as the provisional governor of North Carolina. “As part of Reconstruction in the Raleigh municipal government, Governor Holden appointed two Negroes to the City Board of Commissioners in 1868. They were State Representative James H. Harris of the Western Ward and Hardy Lockhart of the Eastern Ward. The City police appointments included a Nego assistant to the police chief. Three colored policemen were also appointed. They were Wesley or Willie Hunter, Simon Craven and Robert Crosson.

•

The civil war destroyed the economy of the south. Southern economy was based on slave or free labor. “While there were costs of doing business, the cost of labor was never added into the profit margin. The fact that slavery ended meant that plantations, whether large or small, could no longer be run at the same profit margin. And because the South lost the war, there was no more legal free labor. Also because of the cost of the war, most of the plantations could no longer operate effectively.” Most slaves did not know they were free until years after.

“There were thirty blocks, and the boundaries were Davie Street to the south; South Street to the north; East and West Streets. Fayetteville Street was the dividing line. This was a prestigious address, and it divided the city into southwest and southeast quadrants.”

•

Newly freed slaves took on trades they used to do on the plantations and created business for themselves. “In 1860, Blacks composed 20 to 40 percent of the population of the typical southern city.

Raleigh was no different.”

•

“In 1857, the city annexed property one mile in each direction from the capital. Before the 1857 annexation, racially segregated areas were called the suburbs. Enslaved Blacks lived everywhere.

Residential patterns suggest that Blacks were interspersed in the city but that free Blacks tended to live among each other. There was racial and economic segregation.

•

“Slaves were regularly hired out as railroad laborers and servants to people other than their owners for pay.” They were allowed to keep some of this pay which made it easier for them to pay for their freedom.

•

“Free Blacks lived in small enclaves especially in the southern periphery, where the railroad tracks crossed Fayetteville Street. In northwest Raleigh, free Blacks lived in low-lying terrain near the railroads repair shops. The southeast quadrant of Raleigh was built in 1866. It is now Tupper Memorial Baptist Church. This was the church that Raleigh Institute, now Shaw University, was started in. Other institutions that brought Blacks to southeast Raleigh included the colored Department of the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute (or Asylum) that was on South Bloodworth Street.”

“Free Blacks were considered peculiar. Their status was not slave but also not really free. Unless a free Black person was educated, he was only able to work menial or low-paying jobs. These were considered “Negro jobs.” This only increased after the Civil War. The jobs were unskilled mill or railroad labor, domestic service or road gang employment. Sometimes they could earn enough money to buy their freedom, but this took diligence, apprenticeships and luck.”

“The southwest quadrant of Raleigh was between Davie and South Streets. The land there was owned by James M. Harris, a white farmer and livery man. He and other real estate investors built tiny one-story homes and rented them out to Blacks. This area was composed of a mixture of Black and white blue-collar workers. Occupations of those in the southwest quadrant included work at the railroad yards, machine shops and gasworks.”

•

The city commissioners complained about the moral climate of the outlying Black districts after the war when there was a sharp rise in the Black population. The post war white attitude was “racial claustrophobia.” Due to this blacks lived in the worse parts of the city, which were unsanitary.

•

“Deed covenants throughout the city of Raleigh’s white subdivisions restricted ownership away from Black people regardless of economic ability. Acquiring housing in white neighborhoods that were bordering Black neighborhoods was called trickle-down housing and led to white flight from the areas, a trend that continued through the 1980s.

•

“Between 1860 and 1870, the Black population increased from 2,087 to 4,094, or 53 percent of the total population. The numbers could have been more because the federal census tended to undercount the number of blacks.”

•

“Outlying Black neighborhoods, away from the downtown area allowed for lower property costs and more opportunity for home purchase. This would be seen in areas like Method, Oberlin, Nazareth and Lincolnville. Black civic and religious institutions are important to note in terms of housing patterns and Black community growth. The number of Black schools, churches, businesses and other institutions depended on the Black community for survival and strength and fostered racial solidarity and segregation. In the mid 1800s, there were nine Black churches in Raleigh. Within ten years, South Raleigh’s Black community below Davie Street had two graded schools and six additional churches, one of the two Black colleges, a Masonic Hall and the Institute for the Colored Deaf, Dumb and Blind.”

Religion itself was crucial to Black History and Raleigh itself has a large history of it. Black churches started in slavery some masters did not want slaves to know anything but the passages th at talked about obedience but others allowed it. After slavery Black members started their own churches.

“The black businesses were scattered along Fayetteville, Hargett and Wilmington Streets and Exchange Plaza in 1873.

“Chavis Park was built on some of the Watson Lands discussed in a later section of the book. While Raleigh was already in possession of Pullen Park, which had been gifted to the city by Richard Stanhope Pullen, the facilities were not allowed for use by the Black population outside of the grassy areas. Building a park with recreational facilities allowed separate but equal to continue in the broadest of terms. This attitude is alluded to in several letters of support to the mayor and city commissioners Chavis Height apartments were built, also using federal Works Progress Administration funds, parents felt safe sending their children to the park for recreation to be looked after by adults”

“Battery Heights was named because of the earthen batteries of the Civil War that were part of the fortification of the city of Raleigh ordered by Governor Zebulon Vance in 1863 to preserve the city of Raleigh in case of attack. Bartholomew Gatling, father of John Gatling, bought a large amount of land in 1915. This land’s boundaries were from Tarboro Road to Battery Drive and from New Bern avenue to Davie Street. The land he purchased was divided into small lots and usually rented to Blacks who were moving out of the freedmen’s villages.

“Battery Heights was one of the first post-World War II subdivisions built for Black people. The land that the houses were built on ranged from one-quarter to almost one acre. Other requirements for the houses were setbacks of thirty feet from both the front and rear of the lots. Most of the area was forest and heavily wooded between the 1930s and 1940s. The houses in Battery Heights were designed in a much more modern manner than those that were built during the same period in white subdivisions.”

“John W. Cotton owned a fourteen-acre plantation that he called Idlewild. After his death, the estate was sold to the North Carolina Land Company and subdivided between 1860 and 1900.

New Bern Avenue divided the plantation’s land intio two seperate freedmen’s villages: Idlewild and Cotton Place.”

Idlewild is the neighborhood where our community center is currently located. “Idlewild was to the north of New Bern Avenue. Its boundaries were New Bern Avenue to the south, Oakwood Avenue to the north, Tarboro Road to the east and Linden Street to the west. As with Shaw University, the Idlewild community grew up around St. Augustine’s College. Many of the people who lived in Idlewild were originally former slaves or were apart of the first generation of people who were born free. Shaw University - Shaw University is the oldest HBCU’s in the Southern United States. It was founded December 1, 1865. “...It was the first university to offer a four-year medical school, the first to offer a school of pharmacy, and the first to offer a law school for freed slaves in the United States.” The entire main campus is 24-acres but it also has a 35-acre farm in East Raleigh-South Park Historic District. “...

Historical buildings…currently Estey Hall…. Reside on campus, were designed by famed Raleigh architect George S. H. Appleget and feature a Second Empire and Italianate architectural styles. Other architectural styles present on campus are Leonard Hall, a twin-turret Romanesque Revival style building, and several buildings featuring Brutalist style architecture.” Shaw University first started out as a theological class of freedmen in Guion Hotel but the next year it moved to a larger building on the corner of Blount and Cabarrus St in Raleigh where it was named the Raleigh institute until 1870. By 1870 the school moved to its current location which is on the property of Confederate General Barringer. Here is where Shaw University became Shaw University in honor of Elijiah Shaw.

John Chavis Memorial Park spans 28.87 acres. When it was first constructed it was known as the Black Pullen Park because African Americans of the time were not allowed in Pullen Park. Chavis Park was unique because it has swimming pools, fields, and carousels which were all amenities not seen in most African American parks at the time. Chavis Park has been recently renovated and continues to serve the community to this day. It was built in 1937 and named after John Chavis who was a free black educator, minister, and revolutionary war veteran. In 1808 he opened his first school which is near Chavis Park. The Works Progress Administration provided funding for this build. The purpose of this park was to provide “separate but equal” park facilities due to African Americans not having access to Pullen Park. “Chavis Park was designed by G. Robert Derick, a National Park Service landscape architect, who chose rustic, natural materials with the goal of blending the natural with the manmade, reflecting the design movement of the era that historians dub “parkitechture”. Chavis Park is known for the Allan Herschell carousel and was added to the National Park Services National Register of Historic Places on April 19, 2016.

ST. AUGUSTINE UNIVERSITY

ST. AGNES HOSPITAL

St. Augustine University is a HBCU founded by Episcopal clergy in 1867 for the education of freed slaves. The school was first named St. Augustine’s Normal School but was changed to St. Augustine’s School in 1893. In 1927 the college began offering a 4-year degree and changed its name to Saint Augustine College. “Saint Augustine’s University was the nation’s first historically black college to have its own on-campus commercial radio and television stations (WAUG 750 AM, WAUG-TV 8, and Time Warner cable channel 10). It is one of two colleges or universities in the Raleigh/ Durham area to offer a degree in film production.”

St. Agnes Hospital, now abandoned, was once the most advanced hospital for African Americans for miles. “St. Agnes changed the medical landscape for Raleigh for generations. “In the 1920s it was the only well-equipped hospital that served the African American community between Washington and New Orleans.” This hospital was so important because at the time African Americans were unable to receive treatment from “white-only” medical facilities. If you were sick or dying you were stuck if you were unable to receive care from a “black-only” facility as an African American of this time. This is why St. Agnes was so revolutionary for its time. A fun fact “my grandmother, Delores Wright, was born there in 1948, she only cost 4 dollars. She to this day has the receipt.”

1.2 Site Analysis EVALUATING OUR SURROUNDINGS

1.2 1.1 SITE OBSERVATIONS Tarboro Road Community Center was home to many. Especially the surrounding African American Community that utlize the space most to this day. Tarboro Road Community Center was established in 1970 on a 3.2 acre lot. The community center has a large meeting room, gym, police station, tennis courts, shelter and playground. The site also contains the historic Catholic SchoolSaint Monica’s.

The Community Center now is overcast by the vegetation that surrounds it, and the parking takes up much of the site. Most of the outdoor spaces were renovations that were not originally there during the original design therefore they do not flow well on the site.

With the community getting larger and larger over the years so has the needs of the community. Our task for this project is to develop a new 27,000 squre feet community center to address these growing needs and population. The program of this new space includes a new gym, larger meeting space, lobby and administration spaces, cafe, larger kitchen, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, splash area, shelters, and larger playgrounds. As we develop this community center it is our goal to maintain its historical integrity while introducing innovations to their needs. It is our goal to analyze the history of the surrounding buildings and its people and make a space that truly speaks to that.

1.2 SITE IMAGES

Tarboro Road Community Center has been a safe place for so many. It has been here since the 70s but has outgrown the needs of the community today. The spaces are too small to hold the capcacity in which the community has grown too, it is not accessible to all members of the community and does not offer crucial admentities that a growing community needs. The site is large and has bewen occupied for so many years that its history needs to be celebrated.

The site itself is full of dense tress and vegetation that leads to many design options that lead us to make something that not only celebrate the history but also the surrounding environment for which is occupies.

As we have seen over the years many times with other predominantely black spaces in Raleigh due to lack of fudning from the city some of the interior spaces of the existing community center as well as the Saint Monica Teen center are not maintained to its full potential.

When we design for the future we should design with the idea in mind that we are tyring to give the community something that they can maintain regardless on funding limitations, and something that grow with them for generations to come. We want to celebrate the history of this community while addressing their needs. We want to give this community the recreational advancements they truly do desrve.

Pedestrian and vehicular circulation paths are important to see how the existing site uses its entrances and exits. Therefore, this is a great example to use in our future designs as a basis for how we will integrate our entrances with parking areas and sidewalks and benefit the users.

The solar path diagram illustrates the summer and winter sun phases where it hits on the site. The building and the site are rotated a little off 90 degrees to oriented perfectly north which is highlighted in the orientation diagram.

Speciment trees worth preserving are located on the Northern half of the site. Their canopies are currently sheltering the parking area of the site and the picnic area. A few of them are located at the front of the Tarboro Road Community Center. Think about the placement of these trees during your design process and if they are a criteria worth preserving.

The topography at the site of the Tarboro Road Community Center gradually slopes downwards towards the back Northwest part of the site. Consider this directional slope in terms of water irrigation, run-off, program placement, and other design aspects that are vital to your design criteria.

These programmatic strategies are only two examples of how to organize this program. We focused on Public vs.

Private and how that contributes towards the site and how it could be grouped based on noise due to the Tarboro Road Community Center sitting next to a residential area. We should consider the noise and privacy levels accordingly in our designs.

These programmatic organizations and groupings also highlight the amount of greenspace that needs to be incorporated compared to built infrastructure. How the building will interact with the site, the landscaping, and the outdoor programmatic pieces will be crucial in our designs.

Each Mixed-Use District must include one of the following height designations. The designation establishes the maximum height in stories and feet for each mixed use district. For example, CX-5 has a maximum height limit of 5 stories and 80 feet.

When a mezzanine or mezzanines comprise less than 50% of the floor area of the room or space in which they are located, they are not considered a story. When a mezzanine or mezzanines comprise 50% or more of the floor area of the room or space in which they are located, they are considered a story. If a building is taller than five stories, mezzanines are permitted within only two storeis of that building. Any additional intermediate level otherwise qualifying as a mezzanine is considered an additional story. If a building has five or fewer stories, there is no limit on the number of stories in that building that may contain a mezzanine.

405.9.1 Extended Floor Surface.

The floor surface of the ramp run or ramp landing shall extend 12 inches (305 mm) minimum beyond the inside face of a railing complying with Section 505.

By extending the surface of the ramp or landing beyond the railing or by being at the same level as the floor or ground surface, a person using a wheelchair will be less likely to get near any edge where a wheel could drop over.

403.5.2 Passing Space An accessible route with a clear width less than 60 inches (1525 mm) shall provide passing spaces at intervals of 200 feet maximum. Clear opening width of doorways with swinging doors shall be measured between the face of door and stop, with the door open 90 degrees. Greywater is water that has been used for showering, bathing, and hand-washing. It sometimes includes wastewater from kitchen sinks and laundry. Greywater Reuse involves the collection and treatment of this water for use in toilet-flushing, outdoor irrigation and constructed wetlands, reducing the overall demand for potable (drinkable) water. Drain Water Heat Recovery can be effectively coupled with Greywater Reuse for optimal energy and resource-efficiency.

The ability to absorb and store heat energy; keeping rooms cool during a hot day and warm during a cool day.

Concrete masonry walls provide very effective thermal storage – remaining warm or cool long after the heat or air-conditioning has shut off. INSULATION

Adding insulation to a building in another passive design strategy. The extra money invested in better insulation, better windows and a better roof, will result in reduction of the cost of the mechanical and electrical systems and a passive design structure. Insulation helps the building envelope to resist the conductive flow of heat, and it is typically most effective when installed as continuous insulation.

When using natural ventilation as a passive design strategy, it is important to consider how air will move throughout the space given a number of factors such as the orientation of windows and other openings to be used for natural ventilation and the physics of how air move (e.g., cold air sinks and hot air rises)

DAYLIGHTING

In hot climates like Raleigh, the goal is to keep heat out of the building, so windows may have low-E coatings that exclude radiant heat and/or lower solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC). Cold and mixed climates can be a bit trickier, since part of the year is hot and the other is cold. Building orientation and exterior shading options are important considerations when locating windows and glazing. Exterior shading, either operable or fixed, can block unwanted sun from entering the living space during summer, while allowing heat to enter during winter. Given this, orienting our building long ways to face the South is the best for daylighting. It will require an overhang, and to allow North light in we need to have larger aperatures. Louvres allow Winter light in and protects from Summer lighting, while still providing ample views to the outdoors.

NATIVE VEGETATION

TREES Black Tupelo is native, has extravagant red leaves in autumn. From their flowers bees make prized Tupelo honey. The Oak Tree is native, and their acorns, leaves and habitat support hundreds of other species of animals.

They also make great shade trees and most are very long-lived, with its long slender leaves. They too have stunning red colors in autumn.

EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOFS Generally made up of a vey thin layer of soil or other planting medium with shallow-root plants like sedum, mosses, and grasses. The soil is usually not more that 5” deep and is sometimes contained by a tray system, which provides a barrier to excessive growth, protects the roof membrane, and also interlocks the entire system together to prevent wind damage. A more traditional planted roof of built-up layer is also common, but they tray system offers much more flexibility and comes pre-planted with mature specimens. Extensive systems weigh anywhere from 10 to 25 lbs per square foot when dry, which is why the interlocking system of trays is important - otherwise, strong winds could very easily blow the plantings away.

SEMI - INTENSIVE GREEN ROOFS Requires a deeper soil layer, but the payoff is in the types of plantings that can be used. In addition to the mosses, grasses and sedum of extensive roofs, semiintensive plantings include herbs, flowering plants, taller grasses, amd small shrubs. Of course, this comes with a steeper price tag due to the additional weight and root barriers needed. Semi- intensive systems generally weigh between 25 and 40 lbs per square foot when dry. They are typically constructed in layers, but can also be installed using a tray system.

INTENSIVE GREEN ROOFS Requires a deepest soil and has the greatest impact on the structural design, but they also accommodate all types of plantings including large shrubs and trees. Intensive systems allow the designer to create a park-like setting so they are the best option for roof gardens that will be occupied. Intensive green roofs weigh from 35 lbs to beyond 100 pounds per square foot when dry - it is all a matter of soil depth, which is affected by the amount of mounding that is used. Tray systems are not a viable option for intensive roofs due to the weight; therefore, a significant amount of attention must be paid to the various waterproofing and root barrier details

CISTERNS & RAINWATER HARVESTING Used to harvest rainwater and reuse in indoor appliances. Such application can reduce outsourced water usage and lower negative environmental implications.

SLOT DRAIN Used to direct rain into underground stormwater management systems.

RETENTION POND Directs and collects water into a man-made pond, kept away from unwanted areas, and is useful for rains that cause excessive water and flooding. Retention Ponds are beneficial to the biodiversity of an ecosystem by providing habitats and growing places for a variety of native plants and animals.

To start the project off we were tasked with creating 3 schemes that were based off of our site observations and project ideas based on the communitiy needs. We created 3 schemes that followed a criteria matrix to decide which scheme to move forward with.

The goal of the L-Shape was to open up the building as much as possible to the site. The building is to wrap around the site allowing the building to have access to all points of the site. With the building being so extended along the site allows us to place more of our program on the first floor which maintains our goal of age inclusivity. The L-Shape itself opens up the site inherently, and by placing a lot of public programs on the first floor we allow for a lot of community engagement.

The goal of Center of Site is to make sure that the building is the most important thing on the site. This is very similar to the existing building placement but we feel as though the design of the current building is the reason why we have to redesign it. The current building is very dark, and has little space which does not promote a sense of community. We thought of this design as a more practical approach to what they already have in this community.

SCHEME 3 | OPEN ARMS The goal of Open Arms was to open the building up to the community like a warm embrace. A lot of people consider community centers like home because it gives them the most opportunity to interact with members of their community. By opening up the building we allow the site to flow through the building and the majority of the program to be on one floor which promotes age inclusivity.

According to total cost, CO2 emissions and energy the second scheme: Center of site performs the best. Reason being it has the lowest CO2 emissions and total energy use overall. When designing this building there was less glazing and the building is a lot more compact which allowed for more energy efficiency. Yet this scheme is the closest to the current design of the community center on the site and we want to avoid closed spaces and allow ample light into the circulation of the building. In order to increase building preformance for the other two schemes, which we prefered because they met most of our criteria we would need to reconsider altering some parameters. Including the placement of glass, materiality choices, daylighting systems, and solar energy choices.

2.6 PERSONAL STATEMENT

DESIGN CONCEPT & NARRATIVE

Tarboro Road Community Center was home to many. Especially the surrounding African American Community that utlize the space most to this day. Tarboro Road Community Center was established in 1970 on a 3.2 acre lot. The community center has a large meeting room, gym, police station, tennis courts, shelter and playground.

The site also contains the historic Catholic SchoolSaint Monica’s.

The Community Center now is overcast by the vegetation that surrounds it, and the parking takes up much of the site. Most of the outdoor spaces were renovations that were not originally there during the original design therefore they do not flow well on the site.

With the community getting larger and larger over the years so has the needs of the community. Our task for this project is to develop a new 27,000 squre feet community center to address these growing needs and population. The program of this new space includes a new gym, larger meeting space, lobby and administration spaces, cafe, larger kitchen, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, splash area, shelters, and larger playgrounds. As we develop this community center it is our goal to maintain its historical integrity while introducing innovations to their needs. It is our goal to analyze the history of the surrounding buildings and its people and make a space that truly speaks to that.

While analyzing our surroundings, we observed that the current building is positioned on the center of the site which is not the most optimal design for pedestrian travel. By breaking apart the program, therefore by reorganizing and stretching the building to the perimeter of the site, we were able to create an ample amount of centralized courtyard courtyard space on the northern and western most part of the site.

This change in the shape and placement of the building allowed for us to emphasize transparency throughout central spaces and corridors with curtain walls. Increasing the transparency enhances the ability for natural light to permeate into the core of the building.

The atrium lobby is illuminated by sunlight emphasizing the pathway to the community courtyard from the overwhelming commercial street.

Tarboro Community Center is currently outdated in its design and seems to prioritize the circulation of cars on the site instead of the connection to the people in the nearby neighborhoods and their needs for interaction within their community. With the recent and ongoing gentrification of downtown Raleigh it is crucial to mitigate tense relationships that have formed with the historic Black communities and the newcomers. We value the integration of different populations in the area, therefore our design is represented by a hinge that keeps the old and new community together. We also wanted to represent a universal design that includes the senior population in the area as well as any grandchildren that they would bring when visiting. This accessible design is reflected in the integration of gradual sloping paths which lead to playgrounds and resting picnic spaces as well as the lobby of the building itself. By drawing people in on the commercial street away from the overwhelming fast food restaurants we draw their attention with the funneling atrium lobby as well as the horizontal louvers on these facades which create a comfortable feeling for the viewer. The palette of wood and brick brings out St. Monica’s uniqueness and instills a memorable homey vibe.

Not only is the project expanding its exterior space but its program also focuses on a journey of travel into inclusive program encouraging greater community engagement for all ages.

To preserve the community roofline we situated most of the public gathering spaces on the first floor facing the community street and the gym and the portion of the building with multiple stories on the commercial street.

FINAL SCHEMATIC DESIGN The Hinge is a communnity centered project, focusing on bringing together the history, neighborhood, and a growing city together. The site is located between the intersection of Tarboro Rd. and Edenton Street. These streets belong to the historical neighborhood Idlewild near the Historic African American University St. Auguestine. The Idelwild community was home to former slaves, and those who were first generation out of slavery. This area still remains fairly residential but Edenton St. has become a very busy 4 lane commerical street. We noticed that the neighborhood is mostly home to an elderly community and the existing community center there is too small to fit the growing communities needs, and the outdoor spaces there were not considered in the original design. The site is fairly flat with a slight slope, a generous amount of vegetation, and very car focused (largely paved lots). After looking at the history and current conditions of the site we developed The Hinge.

The Hinge utlizes the public program as a means of bringing the community together both of the residential and commericial side. We do so by provided a large open lobby that brings the building together we consider it the hinge that the building pulls off from. Most of our main public spaces such as the gym, dance room, cafe and large meeting room reside on the first floor giving the elders of the community easy access to all the main spaces.

The more private spaces such as our art room, offices, and event space are on the second floor. Although are private spaces are on the second floor we provide accessibility via the two elevators located right next to the lobby. The concept of The Hinge follows into our landscape with how our pathways connect to the main outdoor spaces. The two story part of our building faces the commercial street while the one story part of our building faces the residential, leaving a large green area for community engagement. We designed our building this way to maintain community roof lines and not put something taller than the houses next to them. You can see we mainted this idea in our materiality through our use of wood and brick in certain areas. The Hinge is meant to feel like a warm embrace and a continuous reminder of how important community spaces are to growing cities.

RAINWATER GARDENS Rain water gardens capture and filter rain water through a draining process of compossed rocks, dirt, and plants. This allows for less water runoff from the site and less need for man made drainage. for better results rain water gardens take advantage of an areas native plants that way they are able to last all year long.

Above is a diagram showing the layers of a rain water garen. our rainwater garden is located in one of the small divits of our designed landscape. A benefit of rain water gardens is that they filter out pollution before it reaches our waterways. We feel as though not only do rain water gardens allow for great natural drainage and filtration they also provide dense landscape which provides beauty to the site. When people occupy the space around it they will just think it is part of the landscape instead of something additional.

RAINWATER HARVESTING Rainwater harvesting collects water from the roof and site for the buildings later use. This reduces the cost of water for the overall building because water is supplied, collected, and filtered all on site. Rainwater harvesting allows for less demand of outside water sources, over use of freshwater can lead to droughts. A collection system captures the rainwater which then sends it to a filter to get rid of large debris, there is also a smaller filter known as a first flush diverter that removes smaller debris, the water is then collected in a tank and a control system monitors all levls, lastly a pump moves the water through the system. By filtering rainwater on site it allows pollution to not travel as far and get filtered faster. Another beneift of rainwater is it can be used a supply of water in case of a fire. We have chose to put our rainwater collection tank by our mechanical system for easier access, and since this is the stepest part of our site it will need the most collecting. We do realize this might end up being an eye sore for occupants so if there is an ability to put the collection tank underground we will do so.

Vegetative walls allow for vines, climbing plants, or planted plants to grow along side a specific part of a building.

Vegetative was respond to the climate and weather changes therefore it is important to pick out native plants that can adapt under any condition and survive with little maintainance to obtain the green facade. What is nice about vegetative walls is that it allows for the building to become intregated with the landscape and allows for more plant growth. The benefits of vegetative walls include reducing air pollutants, reducing urban temperatures, increasing biodiversity, collecting rainwater, reducing energy cost, and reducing noise. We have placed our vegetative walls on 2 ways leading to the lobby. We feel as those these vegetative walls guide your way into our building and break up such heavy masonry utilize by the gym. By utilizing vegetative walls we are able to provide more scenic landscape in the front of our building that is mostly occupied by cars and parking. GREEN ROOFS Green roofs also known as living roofs are “...[roofs] partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane.” (Wikipedia). Green roofs lessen stormwater runoff which lessens water pollution, reduces heat island effect, and provides a better mood for its occupants. Green roofs allow native plants and animal specifies to navigate your building more freely. Green roofs can be costly but their longterm benefits outway the upfront cost. The green roof we have chose to go with is called an extensive green roof. Extensive green roofs require the least amount of maintaince and structural support.

This means although our green roofs will not be occupiable they still provide a nice scenic view. We have place our green roofs on both levles. Allowing our building to blend in with the landscape.

DAYLIGHTING SYSTEMS We have chosen to utilize a lot of glass in our building in order to reduce the overall lighting load and cost in our building.

“Daylighting is the practice of placing windows, skylights, other openings, and reflective surfaces so that direct or indirect sunlight can provide effective internal lighting.” (Wikipedia).

The daylighting types we have chosen to use in our building are overhangs, summer foliage, and louvers. These methods reduce the amount of sunlight entering the building while still allowing natural light to shine through. You can see our daylighting options in section through our dance room and how we might approach daylighting that particular space. We love the idea of utilizing overhangs because it does not take away from the monolitihic feal of a curtain wall or the views from the interior of the building. We have the most windows on the north and west of our building which allows for more daylight throughout all times of day which allows for better moral of building occupants.

Overall, this project has been a huge learning curve espcially when it comes to how we are able to show and explain a project graphically from start to finish.
