FEEL LIKE THE ONLY PEOPLE
ON EARTH

NAGGANBI (HELLO)
A Message from the Aboriginal People of Coastal Sydney.
As an Aboriginal person belonging to Coastal Sydney, I have an ancient and unbroken connection to the land on which the TCS Sydney Marathon is held. Like many of my community, my ancestors Elizabeth Foster and Kate Sims, Emma Timbery and Susan Amatto lived in traditional camps in places such as Circular Quay, Elizabeth Bay, Double Bay and Rose Bay and numerous camps around Botany Bay before being permanently relocated to the Aboriginal settlement at La Perouse. Despite this physical relocation, my people have maintained a cultural and spiritual connection to Sydney Harbour and the surrounding areas.
As Chair of the Gujaga Foundation, the peak organisation leading language, cultural and research activities within my community, I’d like to welcome you to our Country.
I hope you enjoy your time here.
Shallan Foster Chair, Gujaga Foundation

ETIQUETTE FOR A SMOOTH RACE EXPERIENCE
IN THE INTEREST OF PROVIDING A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE EVENT EXPERIENCE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, COMPETITORS SHOULD BE MINDFUL OF RACE ETIQUETTE
It is important all runners, joggers and walkers start in their correct wave. Marshals and security will be checking bibs before entering chutes. There are multiple waves in each race. The waves are designed as a self seeding tool, faster runners at the front and slower at the rear. This is to reduce overtaking and improve runner experience.

All prams and wheelchairs (except racing chairs in the marathon) must be in the final start wave – F Wave for the 42.195km, Wave D for the 10km and Wave C for the TCS Sydney Mini Marathon 4.2km.
Your net finish time will not be affected in any way as the timing chip will only activate once you have crossed the start timing mats.
While the TCS Sydney Marathon discourages the use of in-ear headphones while participating, we do not impose a ban on wearing headphones on course. The use of in-ear headphones can impede an individual’s ability to hear marshals or other course officials.
Always follow the direction of all race officials and emergency service personnel.
Do not stop or change directions suddenly and keep to the left of the course to allow people to pass on the right.
Please utilise the toilet facilities provided at the start venue and at the drink stations on course. Public urination is illegal.
Waste: Please help us reduce the impacts of the event by discarding all of your waste in the bins provided, especially at aid stations with cups and any energy gel packets. This can have a profound negative impact on the event and delay road reopening time while waste is cleaned up.
HEALTH & SAFETY
COMPLETING A MARATHON IS CHALLENGING, SO YOUR SAFETY MUST BE THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION AT ALL TIMES
PRE EVENT
Take a few minutes to fill in the details on the back of your Race Bib, please ensure you list any allergies or pre-existing medical conditions or medications you are currently taking. In the event of a medical emergency, this information is critical to personnel who will be assisting you.
If you are actively unwell, have had a fever within 48 hours or have diarrhoea, please do not attempt to race. This is especially important for those children participating in the TCS Sydney Mini Marathon 4.2km. Please ensure parent or guardian details are added to the back of the Race Bib. Consult your physician if you are in any doubt.
DURING THE RACE
To support you during your race, there is a large medical team. You will find medical posts approximately every 2.5km along the course. There are also medical personnel on bikes and buggies to provide assistance should you require it. Please familiarise yourself with the medical post locations at the start, finish and on course on the course maps (page 37, 45 and 52).
If you see another participant requiring medical attention, you should approach the closest event official or medical personnel.
POST-RACE
At the completion of your race, continue to walk after you cross the finish line. This will assist your body begin its natural recovery. In 2024, there will be a 600m walk off post Marathon finish. This is purpose built to ensure runners continue to move. Once you are down, you won’t want to get back up. If you are feeling unwell when you finish, there is a large medical facility near the baggage area in the
Royal Botanical Gardens. If you are seeking information on a runner’s whereabouts or wellbeing during the event, you should go to the finish line information tent at the Sydney Opera House or Recovery Village.
If you’re a first-time marathoner, please check some additional hints and tips here.
EVENT ALERT SYSTEM
The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS will adopt the Event Alert System (EAS) in 2024. The EAS communicates the status of course conditions to event staff, participants and volunteers leading up to and on race day. Alert levels range from low (green) to moderate (yellow) to high (red) to extreme (black), based on a variety of factors, including weather and air quality conditions.
Event staff, participants and volunteers are encouraged to stay tuned to the EAS status via the colour-coded signs/flags at the Sydney Marathon Running Show (pre-event) and each of the aid stations along the course (on event day).

Stay tuned to the EAS status via these colourcoded signs/flags before and during the race.

HYDRATION & NUTRITION
* “PRS” refers to drink stations with electrolyte and water available.
Dispose Responsibly!
Bale bags will be placed 100 metres after each aid station to make it easy for you to grab a drink, keep moving, and dispose of your paper cup for recycling.
We understand it can be challenging when you're moving fast or feeling fatigued, but please try to grab your cup carefully at the aid stations. This helps prevent spills, conserves water, and keeps the course tidy for your fellow runners.
Gel wrapper bins will be available at all aid stations — avoid discarding wrappers on the ground. If you're carrying your own gel packets, please hold onto the used wrappers and dispose of them in the designated bins.

FIXX electrolyte
FIXX electrolyte will be available at drink stations every 5km for the TCS Sydney Marathon.
A limited number of GU Gels will be available at 20km and 30km for Marathon participants only. Should you require energy gels during your race, we advise you to bring your own. Specialised gel bins will be clearly labelled and available at all aid stations. Please dispose of your gel wrappers in these bins to facilitate a quicker and more efficient clean up.
Toilets
Good news, this year we’ve got a lot more toilets! Toilets will be located at the start, Recovery Village and at each drink station along the course. Accessible toilets will be available at the start, Recovery Village and every 5k mark on course.
Whilst we do have more toilets, with the extremely large number of participants there will always be a wait. We suggest you utilise your toilet at home and give yourself plenty of time before your event to allow a toilet stop if you think you will need one.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT YOU MUST NOT MISS YOUR START LINE CUT-OFF, AS THESE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU GET TO NORTH SYDNEY OVAL
THE MAJORITY OF PARTICIPANTS WILL ARRIVE BY TRAIN. PLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTION OF VOLUNTEERS, AND WAY-FINDING DOWN TO THE START VENUE AT NORTH SYDNEY OVAL. PLEASE FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE VENUE MAP TO UNDERSTAND WHERE FACILITIES AND YOUR WAVE ENTRY POINT IS. A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER:
The Start Venue (Victoria Cross, Crows Nest and North Sydney Station) will be busy with over 40,000 participants heading to St Leonards Park. Be patient, and friendly to your fellow participants and volunteers.
The majority of participants will arrive by Train and or Metro. Please follow the direction of volunteers, and wayfinding down to the start venue at North sydney Oval. Please familiarise yourself with the transport and access arrangements for your specific wave.
» Hydrate yourself!
» Ensure you listen to emcee messaging and messages on the big screen. Participants will be loaded into the start chute 20-30 minutes before race start
» For the marathon, there will be 1.5 - 2 minute gaps between each wave. This is to ensure there is plenty of space on the course. There will be no separate gun time, your time will only start once you cross the timing mat at the start.
» For the 10k and 4.2k the start will be a rolling start with one gun. Your time will only start once you cross the timing mat at the start.
» Don’t miss your start time - there will be strict cut-off times. Event Crew will not permit any runners to cross the start line after the cut-off time

RACE START, START TIMES TABLES
PARTICIPANTS MUST BE ACROSS THE LINE PRIOR TO THE START CUT-OFF TIMES LISTED IN THE TABLE BELOW:

* Note: in 2024, each TCS Sydney Marathon 42.195km wave will have a separate start time with a 2min gap between each wave. This is to reduce the density on course and improve runner experience. Note; your race time only starts when you cross the start line.

* Note: The TCS Sydney Marathon 4.2k will be a rolling start. Your time will only start when you cross the start line.
RACE START AREA
COURSE CUT-OFF TIMES:
Participants need to be mindful of course cut-off times. Sydney roads need to be re-opened promptly and there is an allocated time for participants to reach key areas of the course. If a participant fails to reach the designated point by the indicated time they will be given the option of withdrawing from the race or continuing, but being redirected via a shorter route. To view a full list of course cut-off times, please see previous page or on our website for full cut off/redirections.
RACE SEEDING:
To ensure the safety and integrity of the TCS Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS, all events are seeded to allow for a smoother flow from the start, along the course and into the finish areas.
WHICH START AREA? :
In 2024 we are introducing 3 Start Wave Pens. They are Wave A and F combined, Wave B and E combined and Wave C and D combined. Please follow the direction of volunteers and signage. Each bib number is preceded by a corresponding letter which determines the start you must start in. Participants will be allowed to access the start displayed on their race bib. Anyone not following instructions or start in an earlier start will be disqualified.
For more information on getting to the race, click here.
WHAT DOES MY BIB MEAN?
See below an example bib for Wave A, Marathon runners.
» Entry Point 1 (E1): Once you are inside your Wave Pen, look out for signage and truss entries with E1. This is where you enter the start chute.
» “A” - refers to your wave

GETTING TO THE EVENT: USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Public transport is free for all participants, make sure your bib is visible for station staff. We have a comprehensive guide of transportation information for every wave, here.
For the safety of runners and spectators, there will be significant road closures from North Sydney to Moore Park between 3:30am and 3pm on event day. The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed from 4am to 10am and other major roads will start closing from 3:30am in Milsons Point, the Sydney CBD, Pyrmont and Moore Park.
All roads reopen by 3pm. Extensive clearway parking restrictions will also be in effect on various streets between 12:15am and 3pm, making street parking very limited. For details on road closures please click here. For real-time traffic updates on event day visit livetraffic.com
We strongly advise that you take the following steps to help minimise the impact of these significant road closures:
» Leave the car at home and DON’T DRIVE.
» Use public transport – Travel on public transport is included in your TCS Sydney Marathon event registration, simply show your race bib to transport staff when boarding services. This includes trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail services.
» Plan your trip – be aware of road closure times and locations, and if you must drive on event day plan your route in advance and allow for extra travel time. Use the Trip Planner at transportnsw.info before heading out.
» Are you coming by Train? Additional early morning trains will be running to help you get to the start line on time.
Public transport
» Note, an additional station access fee applies for travel to and from Sydney International and Domestic Airport Stations.
» Plenty of extra early-morning transport services from 3:45am will be running to get you to the new start line area at North Sydney Oval.
» Participants in Waves A, B, E or F should arrive via Victoria Cross Metro Station or North Sydney Train Station. Participants in Waves C and D should arrive via Crows Nest Metro Station. All Stations are approx. 10-15min walk to the venue so please plan accordingly. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner and visit transportnsw.info/ sydney-marathon for detailed information.
With major road closures along and surrounding the 42km marathon course and widespread special event clearway parking restrictions in effect, driving to and from the event is not an option on race day. Leave the car at home and let transport get you there and home again.
Be aware that due to the event road closures, buses and light rail services will be heavily impacted. You may need to change transport modes to continue your trip to the start line, and on your way back home.

CROSSING THE FINISH LINE: RACE FINISH AREA
CROSSING THE MARATHON FINISH LINE IS A REMARKABLE AND INDESCRIBABLE EXPERIENCE, FILLED WITH A COMPLEX MIX OF EMOTIONS AND SENSATIONS. FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TRAINED TIRELESSLY FOR MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS, IT’S THE CULMINATION OF AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY THAT REPRESENTS MUCH MORE THAN JUST PHYSICAL ACHIEVEMENT
We are introducing a 600m exclusive (runners only) walk off zone. For better health, runners should keep moving to keep the blood flowing. The spectator exclusion zone also allows organisers to better identify any participants who are having trouble and get to them quickly.
Each Marathon participant will be handed their finisher medal, FIXX electrolyte and recycled mesh finisher bag with bottle of water, Carman's Muesli Bar, and fruit (42.195km runners only). Please return the mesh bag in the bins just after you collect your baggage.
Note: Finisher T-shirts will be collected the Expo.
Baggage Collection & toilets
Marathon participant baggage can be collected from the Parade Ground 600m from Finish Line (Sydney Opera House). All bags dropped at the TCS Sydney Marathon Running Show presented by ASICS will be ready immediately upon arrival. Toilets are also located nearby.
Rubbish
Don’t forget to recycle your bibs (making sure to remove your timing tag and safety pins before doing so) and finisher bags in the designated bins at the baggage area. Be sure to place your cans and bottles in our ‘Return and Earn’ bins. For every unit collected, $0.10 will be donated to TriMob, supporting First Nations programs and initiatives.
Rubbish bins will be located across the venues and live sites, collecting 4 streams of waste (organic, cans and bottles, co-mingled recycling and general). Be sure to throw your rubbish in the correct bin and, if in doubt, ask one of our Waste Warriors to guide you.
Medical Facilities
There will be three medical facilities post-race. If you are feeling unwell please present yourself to medical or volunteers.

Meet family and friends at Runner Reunite, we suggest meeting your family and friends at the letter corresponding to the first letter in your last name. There will be flags with the below letters. Note: Due to the location of the Parade Ground and challenges crossing the course, we encourage marathon reunite and 10k/4.2km participants use the below option during peak periods (8:30 – 10:00am). Crossing the course on Macquarie St will be busy so we also encourage participants to meet at a location outside the Recovery Area, and please be patient crossing the course.

Only a short distance from the Trains, Ferries and Sydney’s best restaurants, this is a perfect meeting point and easily accessible.
