Welcome to New Breed 2023, the tenth edition of this vital program. It is so special to be back at Carriageworks to round off such an incredible year. From performing our triple bill Ascent at the Sydney Opera House, to a sell-out season of Somos in our very own Neilson Studio, to performing in theatres around Australia and the world, it is so special to now be celebrating a decade of supporting emerging Australian choreographers in New Breed. Sydney Dance Company is fully committed to fostering a space for the next generation of Australian choreographic talent, amplifying the now to support the future. New Breed 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of this incredible season, which has now seen 39 exceptional emerging choreographers produce innovative new works on the Company. Pushing the boundaries is the very essence of New Breed and each year our choreographers rise to the challenge and forge their own path alongside our talented technical and creative team. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Tra Mi, Beau, Eliza, and Riley for their works and rich choreographic practice – each exploring such diverse and thought-provoking themes. What you witness here proves that Australian contemporary dance has a bright future. New Breed would not be what it is without our Principal Partner, The Balnaves Foundation, who have been instrumental in New Breed’s success since its inception in 2014. What began as a simple idea between myself and the late Neil Balnaves AO, one of the arts’ most passionate supporters, has transformed into a legacy that will carry on for generations to come. The steadfast

leadership of the Trustees has created an invaluable incubator of Australian choreographic talent. We thank them for their unwavering support in bringing artists and audiences together as we celebrate 10 years of New Breed. Our partnership with Carriageworks for New Breed is longstanding and greatly treasured. This is an iconic and inspiring hub for choreographers, dancers, designers, and audiences alike. This collaboration has allowed New Breed to thrive and I’d like to sincerely thank the Carriageworks team led by Fergus Linehan. I would also like to thank and acknowledge the support of the Federal Government through Creative Australia and the NSW Government through Create NSW for their continuing support of Sydney Dance Company. As the new CEO of Carriageworks, I’m thrilled, along with our wonderful staff and board, to extend a warm welcome to Sydney Dance Company as they mark their 10th anniversary season of New Breed, a true a celebration of their commitment to the future of Australian dance.

Ten years of New Breed is a remarkable achievement. The Balnaves Foundation is proud to have been the Principal Partner throughout this decade, supporting some of the brightest, emerging choreographic talent in Australia.

Over the past decade, New Breed has provided a platform for emerging choreographers, playing a crucial role in shaping the future of the artform. This year’s season, featuring four remarkable works, shows that the future is in very good hands.

Since the first New Breed in 2014, nearly 40 choreographers have brought their unique vision to audiences here in Australia and around the world. It has been a privilege to witness the growth and development of these artists and what they have been able to accomplish following their New Breed commissions.

A heartfelt thanks to Rafael Bonachela and Lou Oppenheim of Sydney Dance Company for their unwavering support of new Australian voices. We’re also grateful to the NSW Government through Create NSW and the Australian Government through Creative Australia for their continuous investment and belief in our contemporary multi-arts program.

Our founder, Neil Balnaves AO, was a passionate supporter of the arts. He believed in the impact programs like New Breed can have on both the artists and the cultural landscape. He would be thrilled with all that New Breed has achieved as an incubator for rising talent and as a mainstay on the Sydney arts calendar.

EVERYB0DY’S G0T A B0MB RILEY FITZGERALD

Everyb0dy’s g0t a B0mb is inspired by the events that unfolded at the Woodstock ‘99 music festival in Rome, New York, July 1999. This piece delves into the concept of “collective effervescence” first coined by sociologist Emile Durkheim. The festival, which featured prominent acts such as DMX, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine, and Metallica, experienced a tumultuous turn of events. Overpriced food and water, plus poor sanitation, and neglect from festival management, led to sickness, sexual harassment, violence, and rioting among the 220,000 attendees. Everyb0dy’s g0t a B0mb explores raw, primal behaviours that emerge during such chaotic events. Through dance we aspire to translate the fervour of collective rituals into a breathtaking panorama of movement and emotion. Influenced by the ecstatic atmosphere of raves, the piece captures the shared euphoria that arises when individuals converge into a singular, pulsating entity. The work delves into the boundless potential of collective energy and unity, aiming to mirror and amplify the electrifying phenomenon of collective effervescence. REVENGE TALES AND ROMANCE ELIZA COOPER

In Revenge Tales and Romance, five female performers compete for our attention and praise in a mesmerising spectacle of brazen heroism. Locked, and loaded with cheer, they bask in Old Glory, shooting for the stars in a nostalgic tribute to the Western. A play on paradigm and form, Revenge Tales and Romance tests the appropriateness of symbolism and archetype in performance, and asks; is it superficial? The work investigates patriotism in Western feminism and reveals a hellscape where dark histories are trivialised; bodies sexualised; and artists utilised – to perform roles in stories. This parade of legacy and canon becomes compromised as clashing dichotomies of objectification and liberation are brought to the foreground. Thank you to the cast; Lucy Angel, Morgan Hurrell, Sophie Jones, Coco Wood and Chloe Young who made significant contributions to the work and approached the project with daring open hearts. Thank you to my long-term collaborator and creative otherhalf, Mason Peronchik, whose brilliance elevates every creative process – you are a visionary.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TEN AND FOURTEEN TRA MI DINH

Somewhere between ten and fourteen is a study on dusk - illuminating and indulging in the transient yet expansive moments between day and night. Bodies and energy chase the impermanence of transformation and surrender to the ever-shifting movements of light, and time. It is a choreography propelled by the movement of light. It is an ode to change. GUBBA

BEAU DEAN RILEY SMITH Gubba is exploring the foundation of what ‘Australia’ was built on, how this country was established and the processes instructed to claiming land that was never theirs to claim. It is an exploration of that period of time, the frontier wars. With the arrival of the empire, the crown, we see the demolition of the First Nations people through a narration of Jeff Wayne’s 1978 musical score of H.G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds. Gubba tells the story from the white perspective but looking at it through a black lens. Thank you to Sydney Dance Company and all involved in backing me to tell this story that needs to be told.

10 YEARS OF NEW BREED The passion for nurturing the next generation of Australian artists shared by Rafael Bonachela and the visionary philanthropist Neil Balnaves AO sparked the inception of New Breed. Together, The Balnaves Foundation and Sydney Dance Company created a pivotal artistic opportunity for emerging choreographers. This year marks an extraordinary milestone, the tenth anniversary of New Breed at Carriageworks. A decade of supporting Australian talent and the future of contemporary dance. Ten years of providing a platform for dancemakers to push the boundaries, experiment and explore their artistic voice.

THE JOURNEY OF NEW BREED To celebrate this significant milestone, we commissioned multimedia artist Pedro Greig to create a six-part documentary series, The Journey of New Breed, to showcase the programs’ enduring legacy.

Featuring interviews with Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, Victoria and Hamish Balnaves of The Balnaves Foundation, and past choreographers, this series showcases the evolution of New Breed and some of the unforgettable works that have shaped the landscape of contemporary dance in Australia.

Episode 1 In Episode 1 we sat down with Victoria and Hamish Balnaves and Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela to discuss the creation of New Breed, its legacy and the immense impact it has had on the contemporary dance industry.

Episode 2 In the second episode we interviewed New Breed 2015 choreographer and Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) Daniel Riley to discuss his experience at Sydney Dance Company and the creative process of his work Reign.

Episode 3 In this episode we reflect on the boundarypushing works presented over the years as part of this vital program and the importance of giving emerging artists the opportunity to showcase their unique choreographic voice.

Episode 4 In Episode 4 we sat down with New Breed 2017 choreographer Melanie Lane, who brought us the critically acclaimed WOOF. After premiering at New Breed, this incredible work later became a part of the Company’s repertoire and toured nationally across 6 states and 12 locations in 2019. Melanie dives into how the instinctive, primal and raw energy of WOOF came to be and the pivotal role New Breed played in her career.

Episode 5 In the fifth episode we speak with Gabrielle Nankivell, whose work Wildebeest came to life in New Breed 2014 and later graced the international stage to great acclaim. Gabrielle discusses how the work has developed since its creation and the significance of Wildebeest on her career.

Episode 6 In the final episode we interview the inimitable Jenni Large about her 2022 New Breed work S U C K E R, as well as The Balnaves Foundation, Rafael Bonachela and other past choreographers as they reflect on the lasting impact of New Breed.
