New Breed is presented on the land of the Gadigal of the Eora Nation. Carriageworks, Sydney Dance Company and The Balnaves Foundation acknowledge the Gadigal and pay respect to Elders past and present.

Welcome to the 12th edition of New Breed, a vital program showcasing the next generation of choreographic voices. It’s wonderful to be back at Carriageworks rounding off an incredible year. From Continuum, our mighty triple bill with Stephen Page and New Breed alumni Tra Mi Dinh, to performing to sold out shows across Australia, including the intimate and up-close Somos, to international stages across France, Slovenia, Italy, Greece and Finland, it’s been a remarkable year.
It is fitting, however, to end 2025 with New Breed, which celebrates four rising Australian choreographic voices. Sydney Dance Company is deeply committed to supporting the contemporary dance sector and fostering a space for the next generation of Australian choreographic talent. New Breed is a wonderful opportunity to do just that.
New Breed began with a simple conversation between myself and the late Neil Balnaves AO. We shared a belief that the future of dance depends on giving new voices a chance on creating space for artists to dream, to risk, to fail and to fly. From that conversation from that shared passion, New Breed was born.
Our 2025 choreographers have risen to the challenge, breaking new ground with their creativity and artistry as dance makers alongside our talented technical and creative team. A massive congratulations to Emma Fishwick, Ngaere Jenkins, Ryan Pearson and Harrison Ritchie-Jones for their work and passion. Each powerful, each creative and each unique. I am so excited to see where each of their journeys go next.
The impact of New Breed over the last 12 years has been extraordinary. It has changed the course of choreographic careers. It has helped shape the landscape of contemporary dance in Australia.
New Breed would not be what it is without The Balnaves Foundation, our Principal Partner. They have been instrumental in New Breed’s success since its inception in 2014. We thank them for their unwavering support in bringing artists and audiences together.
Our partnership with Carriageworks for New Breed is longstanding and greatly treasured. This is an iconic and inspiring hub for choreographers, dancers, designers, and audiences alike. This collaboration has allowed New Breed to thrive and I’d like to sincerely thank the Carriageworks team led by Fergus Linehan.
And finally, thank you to our wonderful audiences and Sydney Dance Company family for your ongoing support and for allowing us to continue sharing memorable dance experiences.
While 2025 marks the final season of New Breed with the incredibly generous support of The Balnaves Foundation, this is not an ending, but an interval as we remain committed to supporting independent practice.
I hope you enjoy New Breed 2025.
Rafael Bonachela Artistic Director, Sydney Dance Company

New Breed began in 2014 with the meeting of two creative minds: my father, Neil Balnaves AO, and Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela. United by their appreciation of creativity, their passion for contemporary dance, and their understanding of the challenges facing the arts, especially the lack of opportunities for emerging talent, they imagined what might be possible with the right partnership. New Breed is the realisation of that shared vision.
The Balnaves Foundation is a proud champion of the arts and believes deeply in its importance as part of the social fabric of the country. New Breed’s mission to create opportunities for emerging choreographers and introduce fresh ideas to audiences aligns strongly with the Foundation’s vision of creating a better Australia.
Over the past twelve years, New Breed has supported 47 emerging choreographers in creating world premiere works with Sydney Dance Company’s renowned dancers. Many of these pieces have since moved onto Sydney Dance Company’s mainstage in Australia and abroad, helping launch some of the country’s most exciting and fresh choreographic voices.
This final season invites us to reflect on the collective achievements of the choreographers, the Company dancers, the lighting, sound and costume designers, the composers, and the entire team who have brought New Breed to life. Now, after twelve wonderful seasons, 125 shows, and 49 world premieres, we celebrate the lasting effect New Breed has made on the Australian contemporary dance scene.
The partnership shared between The Balnaves Foundation and Sydney Dance Company has been unique and special, collaborating to bring to life this extraordinary program. This incredible journey will have a lasting effect on the Australian contemporary dance landscape for years to come. It is wonderful to see this initial vision now evolve into the Balnaves Foundation Artist in Residence Program and we look forward to seeing the impact of this next iteration.
Victoria Balnaves Trustee, The Balnaves Foundation

Welcome to Carriageworks, one of the most striking and historically resonant buildings in New South Wales. The world-renowned urbanist Jane Jacobs once wrote that “new ideas need old buildings”. Spaces like these — wide-open, rough-edged, and layered with history — invite us to think beyond what is familiar and well-loved, and to imagine what the future might hold. It’s perhaps for this reason that Rafael Bonachela chose to place New Breed here in the industrial halls of Eveleigh rather than in one of the well-heeled venues along our sparkling harbour.
Over the past 12 years, New Breed has renewed and reinvigorated contemporary Australian dance. But even programs as vital as this come to an end, and as New Breed takes its well-deserved bow, I am hugely excited to see where Sydney Dance Company will take us in the years ahead.
To The Balnaves Foundation: thank you for your generosity, your bravery, and your unwavering commitment to the cultural life of our city and our country.
And thank you for coming to this performance.
We hope to see you again soon.
Fergus Linehan CEO, Carriageworks

Welcome to New Breed 2025. For more than a decade, New Breed has become an extraordinary platform — one that has nurtured and launched a generation of bold, brilliant choreographic voices.
New Breed is a testament to what is possible through partnership. First and foremost, thank you to our Principal Partner, The Balnaves Foundation. Their visionary generosity has been the heartbeat of New Breed since its inception. To our long-standing co-presenters, Carriageworks, thank you for providing a home where New Breed could flourish. This partnership has been fundamental to the success of this program, to the stories told, and, as we enter its 12th and final season, the legacy it has created for the future of contemporary dance in Australia.
We also gratefully acknowledge the support of our Board, donors and government partners — the Australian Government through Creative Australia, and the NSW Government through Create NSW.
And of course, my heartfelt thanks to everyone who brings this season to life on stage and behind the scenes at both Sydney Dance Company and Carriageworks. Your artistry, skill and dedication make this magic happen.

Save Point is inspired by video games from Pearson’s childhood, the work moves between nostalgia and invention, using movement to reconnect with a time when games felt limitless. Pearson explores movement, combat choreography and nostalgic worlds, blending imagination with physicality and deeply personal reflection.

From the horizon thereafter is an evocative contemplation on the whenua (land) Jenkins comes from, its misted horizons, fern-fringed bays and lakes encircled by mountains that stand as her tupuna (ancestors). In her work, Jenkins embodies the ephemeral beauty and memory of her homeland — its holding and yielding, its silences and calls, its quiet invitation to listen and be led.
Choreographer Note
A big thank you to Jackie, Aroha and Stefan for your beautiful composition, and to the dancers for your collaboration, support and all the good vibes carried into this kaupapa (work). Heartfelt thanks to Raghav for his gentle guidance along the way. I acknowledge Ngāpuhi as the holders of the mōteatea Rimu Rimu, and Hannah Tatana for the version sung, which upholds and enriches this work. And to my whānau (family) — thank you for your aroha and grounding. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.

marathon, o, marathon, is a moving chorus, a strange nagging, a something about now.
Consider the world today, there is a lot to hold at once, we have multiple climate crises, global conflicts and growing power imbalances. Some say we are repeating history, whilst others say the times we live in are unprecedented. In many ways we are running a marathon and a sprint at the same time. The work attempts to capture this feeling by placing the macro against the micro, and the individual next to the collective. Using imagery of medieval dance manias and fallen knights, next to collapsed marathon runners and states of protest, was a way to gesture towards a certain kind of human conviction that stretches across time. What I hope marathon, o, marathon evokes is a desire for us to keep going but to do this with tender and persistent attention to each other.

Deepest gratitude to all the fabulous dancers and to the extraordinary Ella-Rose Trew for her unfailing support and input. Thank you to Zendra, Isabella, James, Tristen, Renée, Richard L, Alex, Richard, and Aleisa for their collaborative support along the way and to Sydney dance for platforming independent artists. Finally, thank you to my family and Michael for their love and support.

Pigeon Humongous investigates a dystopian vision in which a global virus collapses humanity and gives rise to a postapocalyptic world of punk pigeon people. In this disintegrated society, where words, structures and rules no longer hold, movement emerges as the only language and the only salvation.

New Breed has been a powerful platform for emerging Australian artists, offering the space, support and visibility they need to create works without limits. Each season has showcased vibrant voices, perspectives and choreographic styles reflecting the incredible diversity of Australia’s next generation of dance makers. The result is a collection of works that are fresh, unpredictable and full of creative possibility.
Beyond the stage, New Breed has launched careers, nurtured new leaders and helped shape the future of Australian contemporary dance. It has become a proving ground for innovation and a celebration of the artists who will define what comes next.

“The opportunity to create for New Breed 2018 came at such a pivotal moment in my career as an independent artist. Discovering what it means to explore my choreographic voice and Cultural story to a phenomenal ensemble of non-Indigenous dancers was crucial in my development as a Wakka Wakka Kombumerri artist.
I’m eternally grateful for this, thank you The Balnaves Foundation, Sydney Dance Company and Rafael for your trust and support!”
KATINA OLSEN (2018)
“New Breed has been one of the great highlights of my career. What started as a seed, to be able to collaborate with the extraordinary company artists through the creation of the new work Woof, has transformed into a relationship with Sydney Dance Company that has been beyond a dream. From the honour of being part of the 50th anniversary celebrations with Woof, to the mainstage commission Love Lock, I’m incredibly grateful to have had the gift of New Breed as part of my artistic journey. Congrats and thank you to The Balnaves Foundation and to Raf for this invaluable legacy that has touched so many artists and enriched our artform.”
MELANIE LANE (2017)

“Being a part of New Breed is still a peak moment in my career. Having the opportunity as an emerging artist to work with such a renowned dance company, and the privilege to work with the most incredible dancers was so valuable. The knowledge gained, the friendships made and the whole experience is something I hold dear to my heart and will never forget.
Thank you Sydney Dance Company and The Balnaves Foundation”
TYRONE ROBINSON (2017)
“My experience with New Breed was creatively exhilarating and totally affirming on a personal level. The exposure and visibility gained through the long season run, an unwavering Sydney Dance Company audience base, and the influential context of Carriageworks, all thanks to the generous support of The Balnaves Foundation, are truly unmatched opportunities for an emerging choreographer; utterly propelling my career and confidence in myself as an artist.”
