WAYS OF DETECTING FAUX LEATHER FURNITURE

Leather furniture is a classy and elegant addition to look at. It is easy to sift an authentic leather material from a false one. However, nowadays there are so many imitations of leather due to the rising demand for leather upholstery. No doubt, faux leather can make up for an inexpensive and cost-saving buy, but in the long run, faux leather has a shorter shelf life and wears off easily. Therefore, it is essential to be an astute leather buyer – to judge real leather from the fake ones. Following are certain criteria of detecting faux leather furniture.

Smell the leather furniture like wine. Faux leather will always smell rubbery and plastic. When you sniff authentic leather furniture, you know it is a raw, natural, bucolic smell. Sometimes, manufacturers might mask the smell with artificial perfumes, but it will soon wear out with time.

Look at the label of your leather furniture. Authentic leather will mention the type and make of the leather used, whereas faux leather furniture would use a generic term. Another alternative is to ask your vendor.

Faux leather will have a smooth plastic touch to it. Real leather will feel slightly coarse. One should be aware that the pigment used in coating the surface of leather can feel similar to faux leather, so it is difficult to differentiate between the two. If one cannot judge by texture, go by the edges. Real leather will be less uniform from the faux ones. Faux leather would not give you the tickling sensation of the tiny fibers present in real leather.

Leather surface is tender like a supple baby skin. It records the indentation of the slightest impression. As against the smooth surface of faux leather, real leather will have scars and patterns on it. Poke your fingernail into one of its surface areas. If the scar remains, it is authentic leather.

Real leather will have pores in its surface placed sporadically. This is different from faux leather’s uniform and aligned surface. Pores help leather breathe and moisture passes through these pores. A faux leather surface will not have the same surface. It will have consistently placed pores.
