CONCEPT SKETCH BUILDING DIVIDED INTO TWO WINGS: ACADEMIC AND COMMUNITY WITH A TRIANGULAR ATRIUM INBETWEEN. THE ORIENTATION RESPONDS TO THE LOCAL CONTEXT AND OPENS THE BUILDING TO NEWARK

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 6 The design of a Signature Building for NJIT aims to bring the needed outdoor landscape to make the campus feel more traditional and open. It brings a sense of arrival to NJIT and completes the north eastern corner of the campus.

The building opts to have a smaller building footprint in order to appeal to the students’ desire to have a more open and welcoming campus. The approach encourages the campus to open up to Central Avenue and the restaurants across the street by the

proposed Sussex Park.

The northern bar is a community wing that includes a food court, gallery, ballroom, and student lounges. The southern bar is for administration and academia including the one stop shop of admissions, bursar, and financial aid.

The highest level contains the new NJIT ballroom in the northen bar, and access to a roof garden on the southern bar.

Bridges on both the east and west connect the two bars and offer views into the atrium.

CONCEPT SKETCH FOCUS ON BIOPHILIC DESIGN TO INCREASE CONCENTRATION AND COGNITIVE SKILLS IN STUDENTS

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 14 Norfolk early learning institute (NELI) is a three-story early childhood education center for nursery through second grade students. At neli, students have the unique experience of learning in a warm and welcoming environment featuring connections to nature. Biophilic elements throughout the education center allow children to escape the urban environment and have a more productive and positive learning experience.

The exterior of the building curves up from the ground creating an underground courtyard, which can be activated for community engagement.

The double skin of the building consists of an outer layer of perforated aluminum panels and inner layer of storefront.

This system acts as a privacy screen for the security of the school, a sound barrier against the surrounding urban environment, and improves thermal efficiency.

MODEL PHOTOGRAPHS NEWARK, NEW JERSEY 22 NJIT Birch Hall is located within Newark’s University Heights. The proposal aims to bring a sense of community to the area and express njit’s presence within the area. The site is defined by two streets Sussex Avenue and Summit Street, and is adjacent to Saint Michael’s Hospital, two local restaurants, and multiple residential projects. The existing Sussex Avenue will be closed and repurposed as a large park for public use. It includes seven residential floors,

multipurpose space used for university and community events, commericial space for a restaurant and a daycare.

One key architectural element is the multi-story lounge spaces throughout the residential floors.

NYC GEOLOGICAL SCHOOL DISTRICT #14

THIS WATER PROGRAM ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT GREENPOINTS WATERWAYS. IT IS RUN BY THE NORTH BROOKLYN BOAT CLUB, AND IS CURRENTLY IMPLEMENTED ON THE NEWTOWN CREEK. THIS PROGRAM INCREASES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND CATERS TO ALL AGES AND LEVELS OF BOATING SKILLS. GROUPS OF MAXIMUM 20 STUDENTS CAN ROW CANOES THROUGHOUT GREENPOINTS WATERWAYS WHILE BEING LEAD

BY A SKILLED NORTH BROOKLYN BOAT CLUB REPRESENTATIVE.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN 28 A pier with two water programs; the East River Ferry for commuters and local transporation, and floating classrooms for students and teachers to learn about pollution of local waterways and greenpoint in general. In short, the pier offers canoe docking and ferry docking.

A museum seated on the west end of the pier allows for art education and display. The museum’s terraces allows for intriguing city views of midtown and brooklyn. The architectural

system is inspired by the process of igneous rock crystallization.Floating classrooms allows students to learn about greenpoints waterways. It is run by the north brooklyn boat club, and is currently implemented on the newtown creek.

This program increases environmental awareness and caters to all ages and levels of boating skills.

Groups of maximum 20 students can row canoes throughout greenpoints waterways while being lead by a skilled representative.
