Wildlives - Autumn 2024

Page 1

Welcome to the Secret World Wildlife

It has been an exceptionally busy summer for Secret World, particularly for our Wildlife Care Team.

Juvenile shrews requiring hourly feeds

Between May and July, we admitted 1,367 animals to the centre and in June alone the charity received 2,307 calls requesting advice and support. Such was the demand that unfortunately, for a short period, we had to restrict our admissions to within a 10-mile radius of Secret World in order to prioritise the 360 animals being cared for on site. For the Wildlife Care Team, it has involved long hours in a very emotionally demanding job, and their dedication and passion never cease to amaze me.

Rescue Autumn Newsletter

Elsewhere, there has been a lot of work undertaken on developing the site further, both for the benefit of the wildlife patients and to allow us to offer better facilities for events on-site, such as corporate events and wedding packages. There has been incredible interest in these and we’ve received wonderful feedback from the events that have already taken place. These generate vital income to support the charity and raise our profile.

We continue to develop the charity’s strategic plans and look to the future. Our annual Conference continues to grow both in reputation

and support, attracting delegates not just from Britain and Ireland but from across Europe. The Conference next year will be held on the weekend of February 8th/9th and will be held at the Holiday Inn in Taunton in order to provide more capacity to meet demand.

On November 23rd 2024 we will be holding our Annual Auction and Ball at the Webbington Hotel. It is a wonderful evening of food and entertainment and raises awareness of the work of Secret World and vital funds. Please come along and support us; bring family, friends and

maybe work colleagues and kick off the Christmas celebrations!

A number of new staff members, trustees and volunteers have joined us, bringing fresh impetus and enthusiasm to the charity. We are in the process of appointing a new Fundraising Manager and an Events Manager to support the charity in continuing its growth.

Secret World is so grateful for the many supporters of the charity. The positive feedback we receive is such a welcome boost and recognition of the hard work of the

Staff and supporters at our 2023 Auction and Ball

team. The fundraising efforts of our supporters allows us to continue to move the charity forward. I was particularly impressed by the effort of 8-year-old Charlie who walked up Snowdon and raised over £3,500 for us. What an amazing thing to do, and it gives hope that future generations will continue to help and support wildlife.

Our social media presence and followers continue to grow significantly, so do keep in touch and look out for upcoming events. Thank you so much for your support for Secret World and the thousands of animals we continue to care for.

Founder’s Report

Still lots to do!

My article in the Spring Newsletter had a very similar title and if I were to list all that has been achieved during the Spring and Summer you would be amazed. It has only been with all the staff pulling together that we have seen: improvements in our storage; a shop sorting unit; a complete refurbishment of the

Bluebell Barn for events; and other site changes. It is so important that we find different funding streams, as things can change so quickly. We used to have hundreds of collection boxes helping towards our core funding but with fewer people carrying cash that has really reduced the amount collected.

Retail hub used to sort donations located in Highbridge

Now, with autumn and winter coming, we can look at the changes needed in our treatment centre to give Flic, our vet, the facilities she needs for operations and X-rays. It was impossible to do any of this during our busy period, so exciting times…

Most of our orphans have gone to their new homes and we are starting to hear how they are getting on. A landowner who had a Little Owl release in his woods was amused to see that one of them has decided that a Barn Owl box he had built and

put up will do nicely thank you! Slightly palatial for such a small bird, the Little Owl seems very content and we hope that maybe, with such a posh house, he may soon get a mate.

Well, our general election with Labour winning has brought many changes. I had hoped that we would see the end of the badger cull, seeing as they stated in their manifesto that badger culling was ineffective. We all waited with bated breath, especially after Natural England’s Director of Science reported that: “Over the past few

Little Owl sitting in Barn Owl box

Soft release aviary built for some of our birds heading back into the wild

years, the balance of evidence had shifted. In my opinion it is now clear that badger vaccination can provide an effective alternative to SBC (supplementary badger cull)”

Sadly, Defra and the NFU have felt that the cull still needs to go ahead. With 250,000 badgers killed at the cost of £100 million, and legal challenges still on hold, it seems that culls may continue until 2025. With so much science now proving that this is not the way forward and so many other calls on funding, for the NHS, the police and other stretched organisations, I sincerely hope the government will start to give time to this. It can be noted that Wales has

Badger cubs exploring new pen in Millie block

managed to reduce TB in cattle to a similar level to that in England without culling a single badger.

Labour states it will introduce the most comprehensive animal welfare package in a generation. I hope that we will see this soon. Hopefully better measures will be put in place for all these houses that they want built. Why can’t we have trees lining our new roads? Why can’t we have solar panels on every new house? Is it really so difficult to think of our

wildlife living alongside us?

My hopes rise when I see all the work that George does with children visiting the site or schools that he goes to. The courses that our Wildlife Carers give during the Winter months and our Conference that is held every year in February all help with our mission to educate and inspire. Secret World Wildlife Rescue has always been and continues to be a wonderful, hardworking and forward-thinking charity of which I am very proud.

News From Retail

I can’t believe it’s Autumn already! What a Summer we’ve had - with all four seasons rolled into one! The weather has been somewhat of a challenge for our four shops, not knowing whether to put out high summer clothing or winter woollies! As ever, the teams have risen to the challenge and I am pleased to say that all four shops are doing well.

The Bridgwater shop has settled down into the community, celebrating its first birthday on September 6th. Jo and the team have worked hard and continue to do a great job for us. Thank you! Back in March, Tineke, our Langport Manager, took our Glastonbury store under her wing. Both stores are now coming to the end of their second

year of trading and are going from strength to strength. The stores look amazing and the teams have done an incredible job supporting Tineke. Thank you!

Over the Summer we finally managed to get the new fascia up at our Burnham store, which completes the refit we undertook late in 2023.

The store has seen many changes this year; we said goodbye to both Steve and Cheryl who had managed and worked in the store since it opened back in 2020. I’d like to say a big thank you to them for all their energy, hard work and commitment. We also found ourselves saying goodbye to a few of our longstanding volunteers. Again, a big thank you for all that they have done.

We are pleased to welcome Tony as assistant manager at the Burnham store. We have also welcomed Debbie, Carole and Jo to the team and need to say a big thank you to the Bridgwater team who have helped support the store during this period of change.

I also need to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports our stores with donations and volunteering and, of course, to our very many customers who make it all worthwhile. We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you!

It’s that time of year when the nights are closing in and Christmas looms large on the horizon. We have once again pulled together our simple Christmas Gift Guide, sharing with you some of the new products we have sourced from our ever-growing number of artisan makers. Why not take a look or, alternatively, visit our online shop at shop.secretworld.org. You may also find many of our giftshop lines in our stores, Thank you for your continued support.

Martha’s Story

Every year there is always one animal that steals the hearts of our Wildlife Carers and the general public; this year that animal has been Martha the badger cub.

Martha was found wandering around a churchyard in Bath, trying to follow people home. She was shaking and, as there was no adult present, we sent one of our response drivers up to rescue her. Martha also happened to be our first badger cub of 2024.

Martha turned out to be a rather cheeky character and would much rather play than take her bottle at

Martha sedated for her TB test

dinner time. This cheeky charm meant that she soon became a hit amongst the staff who also noticed something a little different about her…

Her colour! Martha was a sandy red colour; this is due to a genetic mutation called erythrism, causing a difference in her skin pigmentation. It is well known that badgers can come in a variety of colours and there is no evidence to suggest that this will impact on her chances of survival in the wild.

Martha initially spent her time in our new badger pens that you helped us raise money for in our Autumn appeal. Once Martha was old enough, we mixed her with some other cubs of a similar age to create a clan; badgers stay in these family groups and all go for release together.

But it’s not all plain sailing: before we release our badger cubs into the wild they must go through three rounds of TB testing. Each test must come back negative, otherwise the badger will need to be euthanised. Collecting blood samples, sending them off and waiting for the results is always a tense time for our Wildlife Carers but we are pleased to say Martha passed with flying colours.

The final stage of rehabilitation at Secret World is to move the clan into their pre-release pen, where they will stay for several months to become properly wild, without any human interaction. Here they will begin exhibiting natural behaviours, such as digging their own setts.

After a few months in these pens, and once the cubs have received their TB vaccinations, we will move Martha and her clan to their artificial sett, ready to begin life in the wild.

EduCATIoN

It has been a rather busy time for the education department. Earlier in the summer our Learning and Engagement Officer, George, who started back in 2021, gained a promotion to the Senior Leadership Team and now holds the title ‘Head of Education and Public Relations’.

We also hired Sam, our ‘Social Media Assistant’. Sam got to work straight away and has been educating the public on the work we do through our various social media platforms. If you don’t already follow us check us out; we’re on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube.

Our Working with Wildlife course grew, and we welcomed 15 young people between the ages of 14 and 19 to learn about the world of wildlife rehab to help them make informed decisions about their future careers. Rather excitingly we also held our first set of free education workshops; our ‘Wild Academy: Back to Nature’ sessions ran over three days and reached thirty 10-14-year-olds, helping them to learn about nature, conservation and the countryside.

Our annual Conference is growing and we’ve booked a new venue for 2025; we outgrew the village hall so now we’re heading to the Holiday Inn, Taunton. As always, we’ve got a great line-up of speakers focussing on wildlife rehabilitation and conservation. Take a look at our events page for more information.

For more information about any of the courses or learning opportunities we have available, take a look at our website and if you have any further questions please email learning@secretworld.org.

Fantastic friends!

Once again, the Hare Preservation Trust have supported us with a donation towards the rehabilitation of leverets that come through our doors every year. Your support is greatly appreciated.

An 8-year-old climbing Snowdon to raise money for British wildlife, how fantastic! Charlie is a truly inspiring individual who has supported Secret World by fundraising for us, it also turns out he’s a TV naturalSpringwatch watch out! Charlie raised over £3,500 for us, amazing!

Jess is a supporter who used to visit Secret World when she was at school. She loved visiting and seeing the work that we did. Now as a student, Jess took on the Duke of Edinburgh Award and decided to run a half marathon and raise money for our charity. She had done some running before but managed to talk her friend Ceren into joining in and between them they raised an amazing £410. They enjoyed the first couple of month’s training but it did get a bit more difficult when they had to go running after school to get ready for the event. However, on talking to Jess, she felt that maybe she would try a full marathon– so Ceren beware, you may get talked into that too!

A massive thank you to Coly House Dental and Implant Centre, Clevedon for donating aprons, gowns and FFP3 masks. We use PPE like this on a daily basis and it costs us a large proportion of our budget so thank you!

Volunteer April Dunnett has changed our mini-golf set into a wildlife competition by painting the equipment with different animals. The golf set was built by two volunteers, Greg and Michael, a couple of years ago and is very popular. Now the set of five holes has lovely pictures of deer, birds, otter, fox and badger, to name just some of them. Our volunteers have some super skills.

A local choir called Serendipity Singers organised a concert in aid of Secret World in June. The audience

was treated to songs from Abba, South Pacific and some more humorous tunes, especially the classical ‘Meow’ song by Rossini sung with great seriousness – including actions! It was a very entertaining afternoon which brought back memories, including to myself as I was lucky enough to have attended. There must have been a huge amount of practice and organisation to have given such a slick performance. They raised a fantastic £600 – well done ladies and gents. Pauline.

VALIANT VoLuNTEERS

Here at Secret World, we celebrate a team of over 300 volunteers that we rely on heavily to fulfil a variety of different roles. We always have opportunities throughout the year for people who would like to get involved, to apply, please visit our website. Here are just a few examples of volunteers who have really stood out in their effort and commitment this year.

Mélyne

Mélyne is one of our international students who came from France to join us for the Summer, both to learn to speak English and to study and observe our wildlife rescue species. She has been an asset to us and has enjoyed her time volunteering in the Wildlife Care department.

“I couldn't have wished for a better first experience in England because the team is so caring, and I loved working at the charity for those three and a half months because I was really able to take care of the animals and discover new things.”

Zak

Zak joined us earlier this year and has been volunteering two days every week, helping our release coordinator with the very manual tasks of preparing and building soft-release pens ready for our rehabilitated wildlife to be put back into the wild.

Tracey

‘‘I’ve been volunteering with SWWR as an Ambulance and Response Driver since January 2024. I love being part of the dedicated team who work extremely hard, often in very unglamorous situations, to rescue and rehabilitate our wonderful wildlife, with the ultimate goal being to return them to the wild wherever possible. As an ambulance driver I never know what animal rescues will be required, or from where, and I am delighted that I am now trusted to carry out some more difficult rescues of larger animals, such as foxes.’’

Steph and Carol

Steph and Carol have been volunteering regularly with us at our Secret World charity shop in Bridgwater since it opened. Their manager says they couldn’t do without their valuable help and support.

Asher

Asher has been a dedicated regular volunteer with us for the past 6 years. He is well and truly an essential part of the team, reliably showing up every weekend to help look after our wildlife casualties residing in the 40 outdoor pens, enclosures and aviaries.

Corporate groups

We’ve welcomed over 200 volunteers this Summer in the form of corporate volunteering days from various local companies, they have helped keep our 4-acre site and all the pens, aviaries, enclosures and gardens maintained throughout the year. Despite working them hard, it seems that everyone enjoys themselves, as they always come back to us again!

Student volunteers

Every year we have a number of volunteer placements available for students who wish to gain work experience working alongside our Wildlife Care Team. Students can be studying anything related to animals, wildlife, conservation or nature.

“I am really enjoying my experience and have already learned so much and will continue to do so over the next couple of days.”

“Thanks so much I loved working with you all!”

“I really loved my 3-week block placement last summer and I am still planning on specialising in wildlife medicine when I eventually graduate. Is there any chance I could come back this summer?”

If you are interested in volunteering, including corporate days please email Gemma: volunteer@secretworld.org

Pros and Cons of Wildlife Rehabilitation

Have you ever wondered what it is truly like to work closely with British wildlife in need of care and rehabilitation?

Working with British wildlife presents a unique blend of advantages and challenges that professionals will encounter daily.

Diverse ecosystems and range of species

Britain is home to an astounding variety of wildlife. Last year Secret World Wildlife Rescue admitted 4014 casualties through our door across a diverse range of species, each of which is uniquely adapted to its environment and the ecosystem in which it lives. No two days are the same: one day you may be flushing the wound and administering medicine to a Song Thrush caught

by a cat; the next you may be catching juvenile foxes ready to go to their soft release pens. Working in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation gives you an opportunity to closely observe species that you may not ordinarily get a chance to see in their natural habitats, contributing to further understanding of an animal’s behaviour and ecology.

Education and awareness

Wildlife rehabilitation gives our Wildlife Care Team the perfect opportunity to be at the forefront of wildlife rescue education. Here at Secret World we provide learning opportunities, outreach and professional development, all of which help inspire people about British wildlife and help them discover what they can do to protect it. This platform allows us to promote positive behavioural change and attitudes towards wildlife, reducing levels of human wildlife conflict and accidents.

Rewards and Challenges

Wildlife rehabilitation is extremely rewarding work, with a great sense of achievement. Helping sick, injured or orphaned wildlife and preventing suffering is probably the number one reason people enter the wildlife rehabilitation industry.

Song thrush

Making the decision to pursue a career working within wildlife rehabilitation is usually based on your passion to care for and protect wildlife, rather than for the benefit of your bank balance however. The vast majority of wildlife rehabilitation centres are charity-based organisations, relying heavily on donations to support both the animals and the staff who work tirelessly to provide round-the-clock care. For people who work in wildlife rehabilitation, their wealth comes from the satisfaction and rewarding nature of the role they are doing! Wildlife rehabilitators often face emotional challenges as a result of constantly witnessing sick or injured wildlife, which can be deeply distressing. Our ultimate goal is always to try and rehabilitate animals to go on to eventual release but this is not always possible. Keeping a wild animal in captivity for any length of time can do more harm than good and greatly compromise the welfare

that animal. Secret World Wildlife Rescue believes that an animal should only go through the rehabilitation process if the animal can be released back into the wild and will be able to survive and live a natural life without any disadvantages. As a result, we would not put an animal through rehabilitation if its injuries were too severe or we thought its chance of survival and release were low. This may mean that the kindest decision is to put the animal to sleep, which is something that all wildlife rehabilitators will inevitably have to deal with.

Regardless of the decision made during the initial triage process, it is comforting to know that you have spent your day relieving the suffering of sick or injured wildlife or giving them a second chance of life through the rehabilitation and release process.
