41 years ago, Beth Pendleton, John Ward, Judson Lambert, Linda Butt,Anne B. Crockett-Stark, Pat Thompson & John Dowd planned the very first Chautauqua Festival-In-The-Park. Without thousands of volunteers each year, this festival would not be possible. Thank you to current and past board members for their time and service on the WytheArts Council. They spend all year dedicating their time to continue to make this tradition free for our community.

Chautauqua: (pronounced sha tauk’ wa) of Seneca Indian origin; a name of a place, variously represented as titles in early (chiefly French) writings and maps… literal meaning “one has take out fish there…” … which may account for the relationship to Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York. Chautauqua, NY Is the site of the educational assembly started in 1874 and is still in existence today. In the late 19th century, the Chautauqua movement became a popular form of adult education and entertainment in the United States. Using noted lyceum speakers (such as Teddy Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan) and local talent, the movement literally spread throughout the country, traveling in caravans and setting up their tent performances in towns with primary access to the railroad. In the 1920’s; Wytheville, VA was a stop on the Chautauqua circuit, reportedly known as the “Redpath Circuit” which ran perpendicular to the “White & Meyer Circuit” that crossed the rural Midwestern United States, where Chautauqua was particularly popular. The Chautauqua lectures, musical features, dramatic arts and children’s activities rose in popularity during the 1920’s, followed by its demise, brought on by the Great Depression and the rise of the film industry. In 1985, the Chautauqua Festival was rejuvenated in the southwest VA community of Wytheville, and has been a source of entertainment, enjoyment and education again over the past thirty-nine years.

In memory of Ranny Copenhaver
Many claim the compliment, but few truly possess the requisite fabric of talent, passion, wisdom, and influence required to be a true “Renaissance Man.” Without question, the late Ranny Copenhaver was one of a kind and for those who were fortunate enough to know him well, an obvious Renaissance Man. Most came to know Mr. Larry Randall “Ranny” Copenhaver through school. He spent most of his career teaching various science classes at George Wythe High School. He even tutored Algebra from time to time. His firm hand in the classroom never overshadowed his compassion and generosity. Most would agree that being a brilliant and beloved teacher, amazing father, and loving husband is extraordinary enough, but not for Ranny. All of that was only scratching the surface! Ranny did not casually dabble in woodworking, farming, or painting. He did not simply have hobbies; he was a jack of all trades and master of most. He could make a lathe sing, a canvas weep, a pen pray, and even the most obdurate of pupils learn. We may never truly know what we lost when Ranny passed away on August 14th, 2022, proving Robert Frost’s “Nothing gold can stay” right once again. In honor of Ranny’s memory and legacy, his devoted family has generously decided to sponsor this year’s Chautauqua Festival Art & Photography Show.

The annual Chautauqua Art & Photography Show this year is in memory of Ranny Copenhaver. We will be accepting artwork (paintings, drawings, photos, sculptures and jewelry) entries for hanging and display on Thursday, June 19th from 4pm-7pm in the lower level of the 4th Street Community Center. Judging will take place on Friday, June 20th. Access by the general public will be June 21st through 28th, 2025. Artwork must be picked up between the hours of 10am–2pm on Sunday, June 29th.. Please go to page 17 for a QR Code for our website for more information to participate. June

Robby Suthers
There’s a childlike wonder to life that is too often lost upon us.There are a few things in life that can bring our inner child, and hidden parts of self, bubbling to the surface: love, exploration, dance, and art - to name a few. I’ve always been interested in the arts. When painting, I try to access a part of myself that’s raw, pure, playful, free - things I want to be in “the real world.” When I am painting, I can be as precise and calculated or as loose and liberated as I want, but I’m often this weird dichotomy of the two. With art, and in particular abstract art, anything is possible. I try to carry it with me even when I’m not painting. There’s a line that I like that I try to use as something of a mantra and code of conduct - “if you investigate enough, everything becomes abstract.”To approach life artfully is the goal from where I’m standing. I would have it no other way. - With love, Robb

Not to risk inadvertent oversights, the Wythe Arts Council wishes to express sincere thanks to all who contributed toward the success of the Chautauqua Festival-in-the-Park. We know this festival would not be possible without countless volunteer hours. It is estimated that approximately 1,000 volunteers support the activities leading up to and carried throughout the festival.
Thanks, as well, are due for the unending gifts-in-kind. These types of gifts are abundant in quantity, invaluable in quality, and often so behind-the-scenes that they can be overlooked. They never seem to be motivated by recognition, yet without them, the show could never go on!
Finally we dedicate this endeavor to our local and visiting festival-goers. Enjoy the 41st annual Chautauqua Festival!
