This magazine has been edited by the South West Sydney Academy of Sport for the greater South West Sydney community.

There is definitely ‘never’ a dull day at SWSAS And that is just the way we like it !!

It would be the greatest of understatements to say we are extremely busy, with most sports working in overdrive, at training, education and in competition sessions. Around the continuing challenges of the current pandemic.

All this is happening, as your Academy continues to work to be at the forefront of development and delivery of sports specific skill, multi-dimensional sport; and importantly personal development education.

And the results have been fantastic. Every day we hear about athletes getting into emerging athlete programs, school state teams, state teams and junior Australian teams.

The Academy is also proud of the support of its four local Councils who have once again held a ‘Civic Reception’ in the honour of the Academy athletes and coaching staff, representing their individual local government area.

This is amazing recognition of the achievements of Academy athletes and their support staff members, and we thank each Council for its excellent ongoing support.

We must always remember that Academy athlete success is due to the efforts of many varied organisations. And the initial athlete development foundation work provided by coaches and support staff members at the Club and School level, through to Association, Region and State supporters.

And the Academy is proud to be one, but important stepping stone in the development pathway of our local athletes, in support of their sporting ‘Dreams’.

The achievements of these young athletes and dedication of our very own coaching staff members, also continues to amaze. We are so fortunate to have so many fantastic people in our region.

To conclude, thank you to our Academy 'naming rights' partner the Campbelltown Catholic Club and our Platinum Partner SOUTH32, plus our local Councils and all of our highly supportive corporate partners, who have continued to support us during the COVID19 pandemic, and the many ongoing challenges it continues to provide the Academy.

One athlete hoping that Brisbane is awarded the 2032 Olympic Games, is SWSAS Wests Future Star program - Diver, Rhys McEvoy.

At just 10 years of age, McEvoy is one of the youngest members of the Academy and is also

Academy Games Helps Nicholls Stick Hockey Goals

He then backed up only a few days later in the Clubs NSW 'Your Local Club' Regional Academy Games in Wyong, where he participated with the Hunter Academy's second side, which was expected to finish down the rankings. However, Nicholls on-field presence and leadership proved to be a decisive factor in the Hunter team making the semi-finals.

BY SWSAS A commitment to peak personal fitness and also improving his game through playing in the Sydney Premier League Men's competition, has proven fruitful for South West Sydney Academy of Sport Hockey athlete Ethan Nicholls.

Nicholls was a member of the NSW U15 State team which was successful in claiming the Australian Championship in Bathurst, after an undefeated run of seven wins throughout the tournament.

"I was fortunate to compete with some fantastic athletes from the Hunter region, who let me play the style of game I love," he said.

And quickly adding, "being the Hunter's second team our opponents thought that we would be the whipping boys and be easy beats, but we showed them," when speaking of the somewhat unexpected top four placing.

Academy Golf Program 'In full swing'

BY SWSAS The South West Sydney Academy of Sport golf program has well and truly 'hit full swing' in recent weeks, with two athletes having been selected to compete in the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation, North v South Cup, team challenge event.

Athletes are selected not just on their performance or sporting potential, but on their character and commitment within their individual Regional Academy program.

Academy athletes Noah Graham and Zackie Kadir, both from Camden, competed for South at the 'Cup'. Which was held across the Southern Highlands from 28-30 May. The South team was made up of athletes representing the South West Sydney, Southern

Sports, Illawarra, Western and South East Regional Academies.

The team was unfortunate to surrender an early lead, and fall three points behind, thereby handing North the 'Cup' for 2021.

Graham and Kadir negotiated the at-times frosty Highland's courses, teaming up with fellow athletes from neighbouring academies, in what was three intense days of competition.

Both Graham and Kadir were unlucky to drop their singles matches, by one point. With some disappointment taken away when Kadir took a win in his pairing in the Foursome competition.

The pair teamed up in the Fourball competition, finishing in a tie with their Northern opponents, And also keeping South in the hunt until the final few holes of the event.

Netball Conquers Regional Challenges

BY SWSAS Athletes from the South West Sydney Academy of Sport Netball program continue to impress at the highest level, with current athletes Ashley Vasquez and Hinemoa Boylan recently returning from Orange, as a part of the NSW CHS Schools Championship winning Sydney South West side.

Joining Vasquez and Boylan in the squad were 2019 SWSAS graduates Erin and Kiara Bloor, with Kiara also being selected into the NSW CHS Team, to compete at the All-Schools Championships later this year.

The NSW CHS Schools Championship Schools result was yet another highlight for Vasquez and Boylan, both of whom played a part in the South West Sydney Academy of Sport's success at the NSW 'Your Local Club' Regional Academy Games competition in April. Where the Academy lost only one game across two full days of intense competition.

The ever-smiling Boylan, who is also a member of the GWS Fury U/23 Premier League side, as well as the NSW Emerging Talent team, is definitely an up-and-coming goal scoring machine.

"She always has a smile on her face when lining up in the goal circle. It comes across as a sign of pure joy; of someone really enjoying her sport," said supportive Academy Sports Chaplain Jim Dayhew, who was courtside throughout the Academy Games competition.

Local Search on for Future Olympic Volleyroos

Academy CEO Gerry Knights, who has been a driving force in getting volleyball into the Regional Academies of Sport, across the State said, there was such a large initial interest shown from South West Sydney volleyball athletes, the Academy reached out to Volleyball NSW with the intent to bring the program to the 'South West'.

The Academy has been spurred on by the interest shown by local schools, and the Westside Volleyball club has agreed to loan former Volleyroo and highly respected NSW Coach Francis Uso, to headline the Academy program.

The search is definitely on right now, for our local future Olympic Volleyroos, as the South West Sydney Academy of Sport announces a partnership with Volleyball NSW, to underpin its new Phoenix development program.

The important aspect of the Academy program is that it will provide a pathway opportunity locally, for our young aspiring athletes to become future Volleyroos.

Whilst recreation venues and Greater Sydney have been closed due to the latest COVID lockdown, Academy staff have been hard at work finalising details for the volleyball development program, with nominations for an expected trial date anticipated to be open shortly.

Knights stated that the interest shown from the local volleyball community, for a highperformance pathway development program in our region was amazing. As the Phoenix program is a 'whole of metro' program, which limits the number of athletes from the South West Sydney region, to be able to participate in the training at Olympic Park.

Athlete Resilience Support - A 'Covid' Catch-up with 'The Chap' FULL ARTICLE - BY SWSAS Resilience and adaptability seem to become a part of 'the normal' for athletes within the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. Who within hours prior to their Softball program boarding a bus to Canberra for a long-awaited training camp, found out along with many other local sporting associations, that for two weeks, sport was, 'again', paused.

It is often said that history has a funny way of repeating itself, but whilst this latest lockdown was somewhat unexpected, the Academy, and its athletes are somewhat better prepared, having been through this before.

One of the outcomes of the original Covid lockdown in 2020, was the Academy's further investment into its wellbeing support programs for athletes and coaches. One such aspect being the appointment of a nondenominational Academy Sports Chaplain, the Rev Jim Dayhew. Who is a self-declared sports enthusiast, competitor and coach, and is no stranger to the wellbeing of teenagers, as it is his day-to-day role, within our education system.

Over the page, Rev Dayhew (Pictured with Hockey athletes from the Academy's Wests Future Stars), 'The Chap', discusses the latest lockdown 'pause', its impact on our sporting community, and how to build a 'Covid' training regime.

"I'm not sure if we will ever get used to living in this 'new normal', but as most of us get along as best we can, we discover that we are in fact, rather adaptable to the circumstances, and consider the needs of others, and that we are more resilient than we realise.

During lockdown, find some things you can enjoy. It does not need to be related to who wins, but the pure enjoyment that being lost in an activity can provide. This is a necessary correction to much sport these days, where winning is the main goal and enjoyment can be lost, particularly for the more talented and dedicated sportsperson. And of course, seek help if you are not feeling yourself, it is ok, to not be ok.

For us involved in the sporting community, we get the opportunity to reflect on our value and purpose as a person, and not just as an athlete."

The 3Dimensional Athlete approach that Academy coaches were recently introduced to, is a helpful framework. And one that the Academy wellbeing program continues to build on.

Consider all of the aspects that connect your physical, mind and personal spirit, it is about wholeness. Sport is powerful, as it reveals and forms character, identity, purpose, self-worth, significance, and value.

It is a good foundation for all young and more mature athletes, and the wider community to follow.

Keep up your daily exercise, go for a walk or a ride. Set up a home circuit using everyday equipment from around the house. Join an online fitness group. Give yourselves a push up or sit up challenge. Ask for drills from your coach, practice the core skills of your sport in the backyard. Do what you can to keep developing, and to release those 'feel good' endorphins.

Also, keep your mind and emotional skills positive. Lock down is a chance to think about what is beneath the surface of your daily activities and your athletic performance. We may well realise the connection between our mind and our body, but how often do we attend to this?

For example, this might be a time to consider your character strengths. Identifying these will build your resilience and allow you to flourish, in both sport and life. Ideally, this could be done across a team, so you can identify what each person brings to your team, and how you complement each other.

Honey or maple 3 Tbsp coconut flour 1 Tbsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 1 Tbsp. Coconut Oil 1 apple or dried apple, finely diced for topping

Method 1. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat.

2. Mash the banana in a large mixing bowl (with a potato masher or a fork).

3. Mix in applesauce and nut butter until uniform (stirring well with a fork).

4. Add eggs and combine.

5. Mix (whisk) in remaining ingredients to form a batter consistency.

6. Coat griddle or pan with coconut oil and pour batter into roughly 6-inch diameter pancakes.

7. Flip once bubbles start to form and cook the other side. Allow to set and cook well (a few minutes per side).

8. Top with a drizzle of honey and small handful of diced apples.

9. Serve and ENJOY!
