Chairperson Report
It is with the greatest pleasure, on behalf of the Board of South West Sydney Academy of Sport, that I present its 21st annual Chairperson Report, for the period July 2023 to June 2024 period.
The past year has seen a continued strong return to sport post Covid, across Australia.
Whilst recognising the structure of sport for many of our state sporting organisations has changed forever, as these organisations continue to attempt to recoup lost grass-roots participation patronage.
State sporting organisations are also attempting to re-coup the all-important funding these participants provide, to support their junior development pathways and high-level competition participation
With a number of state sporting organisations reducing or off-loading their athlete and coach development pathway opportunities to organisations like the Regional Academy of Sport network
I am pleased to say, this change has been met head-on though specific innovative sports program facilitation changes, developed by the Academy
The ever-changing landscape of state sporting organisation pathways continue to often make it difficult to maintain and include additional sports programs.
Maintaining fledgling and long-term programs has been a direct result of the hard work of Academy staff members, and it’s coaching and support volunteers
In this area the Academy has excelled in its provision of wide-ranging sports development opportunities to its athletes, coaching and support staff members, including associated volunteer supporters, and athlete family members
These now core development opportunities are provided with the view of enhancing the personal development of all Academy volunteer staff members, and to better service the Academy and its home associations and clubs
The Academy’s sports education program is recognised as one of the best of its kind in the State And it is most appropriate that I formally recognise our paid, and contra supportive professional providers. Plus, our very own staff members, who provide their specialist knowledge and expertise, to support the Academy’s holistic approach to athlete development
The quality of service and values of the Academy are well recognised at all levels of Government, and its recognition across its own region continues to grow, as a result of its increased commitment to news, promotion, and marketing Another area deserving of staff commendation
The increased valued recognition of the Regional Academies of Sport Inc (RASi), the umbrella operational network organisation, servicing the nine independent regional academies, has grown exponentially over recent years
It is now recognised as a strong unified advocate for all things related to the joint operation of regional academies, with the possibility of a merger of all independent regional academies into one body, in future years
Current RASi projects include the widening the opportunities for athlete and coach development, developing memorandum of understandings with state sporting organisations, Office of Sport partnership management, and ‘NSW Government grant fundingBusiness Case’ development, and its related positive Parliamentary campaign lobbying.
I thank each and every one of the nine Academy CEOs involved for their roles in the myriad of committees they have serviced, many of which continue to be undertaken outside of their normal working commitments.
The Academy’s financial position continues to be sound, and I extend thanks to the many corporate supporters of the Academy, for their ongoing investment in the youth of our community
The future of the Academy relies heavily on the generosity of its financial supporters and to a greater extent the NSW Government, through its Office of Sport.
Without the ongoing current level of financial support from the NSW Government, the Academy would struggle to maintain its current level of community service provision
Our private sector major sponsors such as the Campbelltown Catholic Club and SOUTH32 - Illawarra Metallurgical Coal have continued to be extremely loyal and highly valued supporters of the Academy
I sincerely thank them, on behalf of all our young athletes and the Academy’s wider community
The number of our corporate partners continues to expand, and I congratulate all involved with their inclusion and financial support, recognising that the contra-support provided by many of these organisations is the lifeblood of the Academy’s athlete strength and conditioning program service delivery.
Recognition
At this time of the year, it is most appropriate that I take the opportunity to thank the following organisations and individuals for their continued support of the Academy
The Academy’s major funding partner, the NSW Office of Sport - Sport and Recreation remains the Academy’s major funding partner, and also provides excellent guidance to assist the day-to-day operation of the Academy
The personal and professional interest, and support of the Academy from the Department continues to be strong and productive, and we once again thank all concerned.
The Academy’s relationship with Local Government and its Federal and State Members of Parliament is outstanding, and we thank each and every one of them for their continued interest and investment in the Academy
Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool, and Wollondilly Councils also continue to be outstanding contributors, both financially and in the provision of sports facilities and resources to the Academy
As the Academy continues to strive to secure the services of high-quality coaches, support staff members and educators, I continually remind myself that these members are volunteers, and that they give their time and energy freely to work for, and on behalf of the Academy
Their reward is seeing the development of Academy athletes, sport, and community skills, first-hand Including knowledge being acquired, confidence growing and maturity emerging in some of the finest young people our community has produced
The Academy is so fortunate to have the valued time, expertise, and energy of these fantastic local volunteers, who support the development of our athletes and each other in so many varied ways. I sincerely thank each and every one of you
To our Academy Board of Management Council representatives, Campbelltown Cr Joshua Cotter, Camden Mayor Cr Ashleigh Cagney, Liverpool Cllr Karress Rhodes and Wollondilly Cr. Blair Briggs, I thank you all, for your personal and Council related support
To our long-serving Academy Board, community representatives, Deputy Chairperson, Mrs Michelle Caruso; executive committee member, Mrs Denise McGrath, Mrs. Amanda Coles, and Western Sydney University representatives Professor Gregory Kolt and incoming representative Professor Sarah Lewis, for their wise council, commitment, and comradeship, whilst leading the Academy’s strategic direction and management
Most appropriately, I would like to recognise our Academy staff members, our CEO Mr Gerry Knights, (past) sports program manager Mrs. Alley Pritchard, current sports program manager Ms Catarina Di Ramio, sports operations manager Mr Stephen Craig and the Academy’s incoming sports administration officer Ms. Tahlia Febbo
I express a most sincere ‘thank you’, on behalf of the Board, in recognition of your tireless work, dedication and professionalism in administering the Academy’s activities, and for making this Academy such a great ongoing success .
As its Chairperson, I am proud to say the Academy continues to strengthen its position as the premier sports development organisation in the Macarthur and Liverpool region.
It also continues to be highly recognised for its dedication to the development of youth, and its excellent community work, across our region’s sporting and local community landscape
In summation, the development of our current sportspeople is the work of many, on so many varied levels It is ongoing support of this calibre that allows the Academy to continue to focus on the development of quality young athletes, and their emergence, as valued community citizens.
Thank you everyone
Peter Campbell Chairperson

Chief Executive Officer Report
Similar to most non-private sports education and skill development organisations operating across the State, the past 12 months have seen the Academy continually repositioning its service delivery, to accommodate the myriads of forced and everchanging sport development pathway requirements
The main reason for change has been due to state sporting organisation and other peak bodies, continually changing the format of junior and senior development pathways, as a direct result of operational and financial issues still related to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown
A major reason for this challenge has been recognising the varied structural and financial restraints imposed on so many state sporting organisations post pandemic. And how to work coherently to carry out their, and the Academy’s requirements, within the Academy’s budget and resources.
This has led to a number of state sporting organisations discontinuing, reducing, or providing their athlete and coach sports development obligation to external organisations, specifically regional academies of sport.
To add to this challenge, the Academy’s NSW Government grant requirements state that the Academy must identify, develop, and service the additional sport program requirements of the NSW Office of Sport
Plus, in addition the Academy also has had the challenge of servicing so many varied state sporting organisation requirements at the one time, and within the Academy’s means, be it financial, staffing, or resource provision
The NSW Office of Sport again also named projects requiring added Academy resources during the reporting period, including Indigenous (ATSI); Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities (CALD); Athlete with a Disability; Women in Sport and Regional Youth programs.
A number of these projects identify funds to develop as much ‘podium ready’ athlete support as possible, to service our current cohort of athletes Who are of the appropriate age, to represent Australia at the 2032 home Olympic and Paralympic Games, in Brisbane
At the same time more leading sport development organisations including, the NSW Institute of Sport, via the Australian Institute of Sport, continue to place greater importance on the work of Regional Academies.
Including developing positive sport outcomes in the NSW athlete and coach development pathways, via increased direct engagement with academies, in both areas
Recognition by the NSW Institute of Sport, of the work of Regional Academies, has now developed into a quality partnership, which will continue to evolve for the benefit of both organisations, including their athletes, coaches, and the sports they represent.
Quality, clearly defined relationships with peak sport development organisations such as these continue to be highly beneficial to all concerned in a wide range of operational and financial areas
The Academy continues to provide much more than just sports skill development and sports education It is now well recognised as an organisation committed to the growth of the holistic athlete, and in doing so the development of a quality community citizen for today and tomorrow.
To achieve this goal, the Academy has increased its commitment to the overall health, well-being, and safety of all associated with the Academy. And has taken this stance when dealing with specific state sporting organisation requests, whilst also being successful in developing positive outcomes suitable to both parties
The NSW Government’s recognition of the strategic and intrinsic value of the NSW Regional Academies network, was again demonstrated through its continued operational commitment to Regional Academies. Both individually and via the Academies’ umbrella organisation, the Regional Academies of Sport (NSW) Inc.
The transition to a Labor appointed Minister, The Hon Steve Kamper in April 2023, required the provision of a quality understanding by the Minister, of the changing Government policy relevant to regional academies, and an understanding of the Regional Academies of Sport Inc. network, and their benefits
This undertaking was successfully achieved, with The Hon. Steve Kamper, also attending the Academy’s August Graduation and Sports Award Dinner, and whole-heartedly engaging via a ministerial address, and the presentation of Academy awards
Our region’s four highly supportive local councils, namely Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly, continue to demonstrate their individual commitment to the operation and success of the Academy. Through their ongoing financial and operational support, and the provision of highquality sporting venues and facilities.
And the Academy’s state and local sports organisations, plus its corporate and contra-corporate partners, have also continued to provide much needed financial, and, or practical support to the Academy, during the past 12-month period
In this regard we must again highlight and commend the Campbelltown Catholic Club and SOUTH32 –Illawarra Metallurgical Coal, for their outstanding long-term ongoing support of the Academy.
The Year in brief
The attached report identifies an Academy sports program incorporating 315 athletes, plus 65 coaches, support staff members, and associated volunteers.
With a gender variance evenly weighted to male and female athlete scholarships offered. (50% male/50% female 2023-2024 )
The Academy also achieved a 63% female make up across its coach and support staff ranks; a value echoed within the operational staff and Board makeup.
It has also serviced a marked transition of participants, with over 70% of athletes, and 37% of coaching staff new to Academy programs, in 2023-2024
The financial investment returns relevant to the athlete levy provided a ‘Return on Investment’ for athletes, of an incredible 8:1
A community ‘Economic Investment Value’ exceeding $3 34m forms the foundation for what has been a positive trend, and pattern of growth in both athlete and coach development programs, from 13 sports in 2020/2021, to 22 varied sport and support programs in 2023/2024.
The Academy continues to grow its presence within the community, with athletes representing 70 local schools, and participating in 66 sporting clubs and associations across our region
Our coach and support staff continue to contribute over 11,000 hours (about 1 and a half years) to community sport, in addition to over 7,000 hours (about 9 and a half months) provided to Academy athletes' development within their high-performance pathways
The Academy athlete to coach ratio for the period continues to be an impressive 5 5:1
Additional information relating to the Academy's performance is included within its 2023/2024 Annual Report
The Academy continues to develop into something highly valued by, and for its wider local community, under the professional direction of its Board of Management.
Academy Chairperson Mr Peter Campbell, Deputy Chairperson Mrs Michelle Caruso, Executive Director Mrs. Denise McGrath, Mrs. Amanda Coles, Professor Gregory Kolt, and incoming director Professor Sarah Lewis, have again provided quality counselling and personal support, in their relevant areas of responsibility
The Academy Board's local Council representatives, are also to be commended for their support, guidance, and friendship
Councillors for the period included Camden Mayor Cr. Ashleigh Cagney, Campbelltown Deputy Mayor Cr Joshua Cotter, Liverpool Cllr Karress Rhodes and Cr. Blair Briggs representing Wollondilly Shire Council.
I take this opportunity to also thank Academy staff members Stephen Craig, Catarina Di Ramio, Tahlia Febbo and Alley Pritchard, for their amazing never-ending passion, and ‘above-andbeyond’ commitment to the Academy.
In conclusion, I commend all associated with the Academy for their individual and collective support during the past 12 months. It was amazing

As a part of the Office of Sport Project C initiative, the Academy was able to add additional sport programs to our service, including 3x3 Basketball, Hockey Futures, as well as a Performance Extension Program.
The Academy has also identified and had discussions with a number of potential sporting organisations who are keen to see their sport included within the Academy in the not to distant future, as we head towards Brisbane 2032.
We are beginning to see the full benefits of the implementation of the Academy's Sport Framework and Lifecycle within our programs, as our athletes continue to achieve greater successes, with well over 50 selected into NSW state teams/squads in 20232024, and ten athletes finding themselves representing Australia
This alone marks a great return to sport after several years interrupted by COVID-19
Pursu32+ Pathway Program
As a part of the collaborative NSWIS / RASi Pursu32+ program, the Academy serviced two athletes in Skylar Murphy (BMX) and Cody Meisenhofen (Volleyball). Their experiences within this select group of talent identified athletes included undertaking several high performance camps with the NSW Institute of Sport which well and truly placed them on their talent radar
Strength and Conditioning Support
The Academy's partnerships with local strength and conditioning partners continues to grow, with five local organisations partnering to assist in the delivery of a 12-week theory and practical education program to the Academy's athletes
These programs include not just the how of strength and conditioning, but the why, when and what, combined with a home program for each athlete.
These partners service a considerable number of athletes and programs between them, with their diverse locations across the region allowing athletes access to a local service provider
Our strength and conditioning partners include:
Bounce Back Physio and Chiro
Dynamo Athletic
Fit Clinic
Movement Essentials
Phoenix Athletic Performance
Performance Extension Program
The Performance Extension Program has been developed by the Academy as an advanced training opportunity offered to athletes across all Academy Sport Programs, designed to enhance skills in speed, agility, reaction time, accuracy, and functional movement.
Supervised by Academy Sport Science staff and supported by Western Sydney University Sport Science interns, the program provides expertguided, hands-on experience, helping athletes further their performance while also sparking an interest in sports science for those considering it as a career path
The program spans 8-10 sessions and is held during school Terms 1 and 3, allowing athletes to build on their Academy strength and conditioning program ahead of their competition season
It is offered at no additional cost, with sessions taking place at various locations within the Academy region Athletes are encouraged to attend all sessions for optimal benefit but can still complete the program with a commitment to at least six sessions
Provided in a structured yet friendly environment, this program not only supports athletic development but also encourages participants to explore a deeper connection to sports science, potentially inspiring their long-term academic and professional ambitions
Our partnership with Education partner Western Sydney University continues to grow, with the University providing access to their lecture theatres and learning spaces for not just our athlete and parent inductions, but for lectures and presentations throughout the year
A key highlight of this partnership throughout 2023-2024 has been the re-development of the Sport Science internship program
Western Sydney University Internship Program
The partnership between the Academy and Western Sydney University provides Exercise Science and Sport Development students with a 140-hour practicum that bridges academic study and hands-on learning.
This internship enables students to gain accreditation-relevant experience with a youth athlete population by participating in two placement blocks throughout the year
Interns work under the guidance of an ESSA-accredited supervisor, actively assisting in athlete fitness assessments, program design, and performance monitoring, using professional tools like VALD Force Decks and Smart Speed systems
They also develop and implement tailored exercise programs based on individual athlete assessments, observing and applying advanced testing protocols to meet specific needs across sports.
This practicum opportunity includes a comprehensive project where each student designs a periodised program based on real athlete data, applying theoretical knowledge to assess program performance and also suggest improvements.
Throughout, WSU students document their experiences, apply theoretical concepts, and track their professional growth via ESSA logbook entries This partnership not only supports the academic and professional development of WSU students but also benefits the Academy athletes by integrating cutting-edge exercise science practices into their training.
Rounding out the Western Sydney University partnership is it's invaluable assistance in providing the sport science testing component of the Academy's annual Indigenous Talent Identification Day.
Held in September 2023, over 80 Indigenous athletes from across South West Sydney took part in talent identification, including touch football, basketball, netball and AFL
Athletes identified from this day went on to participate within the Academy's Indigenous Athlete Program, including an immersive sport and cultural education opportunity.
Coach Education and Development
The Academy continues to remain at the forefront of coach education and development amongst the Regional Academy network, with the ongoing partnership with 3D Institute providing all Academy coaches the opportunity to undertake quality internationallyrecognised training and development
The Academy was fortunate to host 3D Institute's International Development Director, Mark Hull, in October 2023, who presented the principles of 3 Dimensional coaching to our coach and support staff members, of which now form a key part of the Academy's coach development strategy.
Our coach and support staff also continue to be supported by the Regional Academy network, by attending the RASi annual Coach Conference, and having continued access to the NSW Office of Sport webinar series.
Significant information gained through a comprehensive Academy Sport Program and Service Delivery review in early 2024 has led to some exciting initiatives being launched within the 2024/2025 programs
Including regular online zoom “coach connects”, and ongoing coach development plans - all aimed to not just upskill our coaching staff, but assist them in providing the best service possible to our aspiring athletes
Regional Academy Games
I am pleased to report that the Academy once again participated in the annual ClubsNSW Your Local Club Regional Academy Games, held in Wagga Wagga, in April 2024.
The Academy had strong participation in Basketball (Male and Female), Golf (Mixed), Hockey (Male and Female), Triathlon (Mixed) and Volleyball (Male and Female) Culminating in 122 athletes and 44 coaching staff participating with great success and development, over the course of the weekend
Sport Program Manager Transition
I would like to also personally extend thanks to the contribution made by Alley Pritchard as Sport Program Manager. Alley departed the organisation in June 2024 and her contribution to the Sport Program space during her time with the Academy has been greatly appreciated by all staff members, athletes and coach and support staff
I look forward to working with all of our volunteers, as well as our many sport stakeholders as we look to continue our growth and success in the years ahead.
With many exciting activities planned, we continue to identify our key initiatives and expectations across all of our sport programs; as we continue to focus on servicing our local community athletes.
