Laser Cutting Techniques with Handful of Love Kingsley High School in Harrow is an outstanding community special school for pupils aged 11-19 years, who experience severe learning difficulties, autism and profound learning needs. They deliver such an outstanding service in the community and have achieved amazing Ofsted reports as well as winning the IQM National Inclusive Schools Award for the fourth year running. Teacher Marcia Thomas contacted Swordfish to ask if we could produce plain wooden hands and hearts for a special Valentine’s project they had lined up for pupils in half term. Their budget for this Valentine Project was very small, and so we decided to donate our time and materials for free, in recognition of the great job they do. Timescales were tight and so we got to work quickly, laser cutting lots of hands and hearts from MDF, ready to be painted and decorated by the pupils.

The school’s curriculum aims to support pupils to develop life skills through a variety of activities. For this particular project, the pupils were required to work on an item made of wood, giving them the experience of using a variety of tools and finishes. The aim was for them to produce craft pieces in the shape of hearts and hands that they could take home to their families for Valentine’s Day.
