*** It is a pleasure to join the Swope community in working to support one of the nation’s outstanding museums of American art. The depth and breadth of the Swope Art Museum’s exhibitions, programs and special events last year are truly impressive and reflect the Museum’s longstanding commitment to serving residents and visitors of the Wabash Valley through opportunities to engage with the visual arts.
Many of you have missed seeing Threshing Wheat by Thomas Hart Benton in the galleries. It has been out for conservation in Indianapolis. Linda A. Witkowski, Senior Conservator of Paintings at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, is concluding treatment of the painting, and Threshing Wheat should be back on display at the Swope by early October, looking better than ever.
I am delighted to report that on September 15, the Swope was awarded $5,000 for its endowment from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. The Foundation, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this fall, hosted a community expo and dinner at which $20,000 was given to eight nonprofit agencies based on attendee votes that evening. The Boards, volunteers, and staff of the Swope are grateful to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation for this significant gift and to the many voters that evening who thought the Swope was worthy of this wonderful recognition. The past year’s accomplishments would not be possible without the hard work and support of so many individuals and groups. Members of the Boards, the Alliance, the Art Hoppers, docents, sponsors, donors, members and staff have made invaluable contributions to the success and vitality of the Swope’s exhibitions and programs for Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley. Next year, the Museum’s 70th, promises to be even more exciting!

66th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition July 10 – August 21, 2010 Haslem and Hodge Galleries Made possible by First Financial Bank One of the oldest and most prestigious juried exhibitions in Indiana, the 66th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition exhibited the work of 53 Wabash Valley artists. The exhibition was a great opportunity for visitors to become familiar with the work of many of the region’s talented artists. The distinguished juror was Dr. Gregory Gilbert, associate professor and director of the Art History Program at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and senior curator of the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, where he is director of the National Center for Midwest Art and Design. The exhibition exemplifies the Swope’s commitment to presenting the work of local and regional artists.

The Marilyn Wheeler Pendergast New Acquisition Gallery has been specially designated to highlight the growing and changing collection of the Museum with works of art on view that are rotated periodically throughout the year. Selections of recent gifts and purchases for the Swope collection are displayed in the second floor elevator lobby, newly re-titled to honor the memory of a longtime president of the Board of Managers, docent, Alliance member and great supporter of the Museum.
Terra Mobilis/The Mountains are Shadows: New Work by Todd Anderson September 3 – October 23, 2010 Education Gallery Visitors followed the creative journey of printmaker Todd Anderson as he explained his inspirations and processes and saw the evolution of his imaginative imagery from awesome mountains to devastated glaciers in this educational exhibition. The Samara House: A Usonian Design by Frank Lloyd Wright October 1- December 31, 2010 Haslem and Hodge Galleries
A modest design in Frank Lloyd Wright terms, the Samara house in West Lafayette, Indiana was designed in the 1950s using the Usonian concept the famous architect developed in the 1930s and 40s for the average American. Wright’s Usonian houses used the local materials available to each client along with prefabricated walls made of plywood and insulation, making the homes affordable. The Usonian house derives from the acronym Usonia, which the architect used for the United States of North America. Attributes of the Usonian design include the elimination of attic and basement, which were replaced by a single story built on a slab foundation; flat roofs with overhanging eves; an open floor plan in the public areas that allowed for easy flow; grouped utilities; carports; and windows placed strategically for views of natures, privacy, and natural light. John E. and Catherine (Kay) Christian contacted Wright in the 1950s to build the Samara House on a plot of land on which Dr. Christian had planted evergreen trees. Wright named the house Samara, “winged seeds,” and made the pine samara the unifying ornamental theme of the house. In recognition of this exemplary representation of the Usonian style, the John E. Christian Family has set up a trust to ensure the long-term care of the house as well as public programming such as the exhibition of furniture, blueprints and other items from the house that was displayed at the Swope in fall 2010. Juliet Peddle: Terre Haute Architect November 5 – December 18, 2010 Education Gallery

The first registered female architect in Indiana, Juliet Peddle of Terre Haute (1899-1979) was also a fine draftsman and historian. Visitors explored the architect’s artistry through a set of finely designed Christmas cards, on loan from the Vigo County Historical Society, and meticulously researched drawings of pre-civil war buildings of the Terre Haute area, loaned by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Sculpting Poetry: The Development of Max Ehrmann at the Crossroads January 7- March 26, 2011 Education Gallery

This exhibition examined the multi-layered issues involved in selecting and placing public sculpture. It followed artist Bill Wolfe and his partners, Art Spaces, Inc., the Cultural Trail Coalition and Sincerus Bronze Art Center of Indianapolis, through the planning and execution of Max Ehrmann at the Crossroads, a sculptural tribute to a treasured Terre Haute poet. The French Connection: Gifts to the Swope Collection Given by and in Memory of Ray and Martha French February 4 – March 12, 2011 Haslem and Hodge Galleries Made possible by the Alliance of the Swope Renowned printmaker and professor of art Ray French (1919-2000) had a long relationship with the Swope Art Museum, beginning with his first solo exhibition, held at the Swope in 1943. French’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and the Swope Art Museum. In addition to his important contributions as both printmaker and teacher, French also assembled an extensive collection of prints, many of which he eventually gifted to the Swope Art Museum. The French Connection: Gifts to the Swope Collection Given by and in Memory of Ray and Martha French highlighted the longstanding and valuable relationship between the French family and Swope collection and included work in a variety of media by Ray French and artists who studied with him, as well as Hoosier and American favorites from the early 20th century to the present. The legacy of Ray French continues with recent acquisitions to the Swope collection that are purchased with the Ray and Martha French Memorial Funds. Tom French, the son of Ray and Martha French and an art dealer, has continued the family connection to the Museum by donating works of art as well as guiding many new gifts to the Swope through his encouragement of others.

Exploring Portraiture invited viewers to examine the variety of ways that artists capture personality through this exhibition drawn from the Swope collection. Many of the works had not been on view in several years. American portraits from the 1800s were displayed directly next to those by more contemporary artists, providing audiences with the chance to compare approaches. Visitors also had the chance to draw their companion or to make their own self portrait. The program included a presentation by Dr. Harriet McNeal (Caplow), Professor Emerita at Indiana State University and co-author of Juliet Peddle of Terre Haute: the architect, the historian, and her city, 1899-1979. Attendees also viewed the film The Kokomo Opalescent Glass Story. Swope First Friday is sponsored by Union Hospital and UAP Clinic. • Wednesday, November 10 American Art 101: Cosmic Forms A discussion of the influence of transcendentalism on artists by comparing the 1941 drawing Cosmic Forms by Emil Bisttram and the abstract designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. • Saturday, November 13 Swope Family Day: The Wright Furnishing The second of three Family Days inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, visitors enjoyed self-guided tours of some of Wright’s home furnishings before making miniature versions of their own. Swope Family Day is sponsored by Terre Haute Regional Hospital. • Thursday, November 18 Reception and Lecture: “Frank Lloyd Wright: Architectural Alchemist” Dr. Sidney Robinson, Faculty, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and Preservation Program Coordinator, Taliesin Preservation, Inc. spoke at Indiana State University’s Center for the Performing and Fine Arts. Professor Robinson discussed Wright’s creativity as demonstrated by the wide range of sources on which he based his architecture. The Swope held a dinner afterwards to honor Dr. Robinson.

APRIL 2011 • Friday, April 1 First Friday: Sites and Sounds The Swope celebrated spring with the joyous sounds of the Indiana State University flute choir and poetry readings from the Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition. The ISU flute choir performed under the direction of Professor of Music Joyce Wilson Swope First Friday is sponsored by Union Hospital and UAP Clinic. • Saturday, April 2 – Saturday, April 30 Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition Art Spaces, Inc. – Wabash Valley Outdoor Sculpture Collection and the Swope Art Museum co-organized the Max Ehrmann Poetry Competition. 308 individuals and students living or working in Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo Counties submitted 442 poems between September 2010 and February 2011 to the competition. Hoosier authors Arthur Brown, J. L. Kato, and Rachel Contreni Flynn judged the entries. At a ceremony held at the Swope on Friday, April 1, awards were presented in three categories: poetry inspired by a work of art, poetry inspired by nature, and poetry inspired by city life or an urban environment. Winning poems were exhibited at the Vigo County Public Library from April 2 – 30. Attendees viewed an interactive video installation in the Swope attic by artists Sala Wong, Assistant Professor Indiana State University, and Peter Williams, Assistant Professor DePauw University. Swope Family Day is sponsored by Terre Haute Regional Hospital. • Tuesday, May 31 Spark Reading Series: Work in Progress by Karl Barnebey For the final presentation in the Spark Reading series, the Swope hosted local writer Karl Barnebe. With his second full-length play, Barnebey drew upon Hoosier legend and his familiarity with natural history lore.

SUMMER 2011 • June 6 through August 5 Summer Youth Art Program Made possible by the City of Terre Haute Arts Commission Grant, Lilly Clinton Labs, Oakley Foundation, Clabber Girl, and VSA Arts of Indiana • June 7 Performance artist Joe Bigley bicycled through the area on a project called Traversing a Foreign Border Domestically. Positioning artist as social investigator, Mr. Bigley rode 3,435.5 miles, the length and shape of the border of the country of Afghanistan inside of the United States. Along the way he interacted with the public to engage in a dialogue about the U.S. and Afghan situation.
