2012-2013 was an exciting year at the Swope Art Museum, marked by important exhibitions and publications, the continuation and expansion of popular programs and events, and by many building improvements. Most notably, the major 70th anniversary exhibition, Dual Visions: John Rogers Cox, Artist and Curator, opened in October. Focusing on the Museum’s founding director; it brought many out-of-town visitors to Terre Haute. In addition to loans of art work from the Cox family and from other private collections, the exhibition included paintings from the collections of the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Flint Institute of Arts. 2013 brought more interesting events with the Museum’s participation in the community’s Year of the River celebration. Exhibitions and programs examined the significance that the Wabash River and bodies of water more generally have had on our lives. Last fall, the Museum published Swope Art Museum: Selected Works from the Collection, featuring essays by Laurette E. McCarthy, Ph.D. about 70 works of art. This handsome book offers detailed information about the selected works of art alongside beautiful, full-color images. An undertaking of nearly two years, the result is a publication that will stand as the definitive work about the collection for years to come. The past year was a time for making repairs and improvements to the building, including resurfacing and repairs to the floor on the third floor, thanks to an in-kind donation from Hardwood Renovations; new electrical wiring on the third floor; the addition of banisters to the staircases; two window replacements on the third floor; and façade work. Improvements continue in 2013-2014 with a roof replacement, the completion of façade work, and more window replacements courtesy of 100+ Women Who Care, Vigo County and other generous donors. Fundraising events were well attended. A special preview and dinner for the opening of Dual Visions: John Rogers Cox, Artist and Curator included presentations by Laurette McCarthy and Guille Cox. Mardi Gras, organized by the Art Hoppers of the Swope Art Museum, broke its previous record and netted more than $56,000. The annual Marilyn Wheeler Pendergast Spring Dinner, held the first Sunday in May, also set a new record and netted more than $33,000. Several major grants were awarded to the Swope during the year, including a matching grant from the City of Terre Haute for façade repairs, a two-year grant for operating funds from the Indiana Arts Commission, and an arts grant from the City for the Summer Youth Art Program. Foundations such as the Indiana Chemical Trust, the Weston Wabash Foundation and the Frederick R. Benson Trust were very generous with support. The Museum was fortunate to receive generous contributions from individual and corporate members, exhibition and program sponsors, in-kind donations, and contributions to special projects and the annual fund. The community’s strong support enabled the Swope to end the fiscal year in the black for a second year. Thank you all for believing in the importance that great art has in both our lives and in adding to the cultural and economic strength of the Wabash Valley.

The Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition, among the oldest juried exhibitions in the state, is one of the most important ways that the Swope supports the work of area artists. For the 2012 exhibition, the distinguished juror was Jeffrey Grove, the Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Dallas Museum of Art.

The Marilyn Wheeler Pendergast New Acquisition Gallery has been specially designated to highlight the growing and changing collection of the Museum with works of art on view that are rotated periodically throughout the year. Selections of recent gifts and purchases for the Swope collection are displayed in the second floor elevator lobby, named to honor the memory of a longtime president of the Board of Managers, docent, Alliance member and great supporter of the Museum.
The Art of William T. Turman
September 7 – October 20, 2012 Education Gallery Made possible by Century 21 Advantage This exhibition, organized in honor of the first president of the Board of Managers, William T. Turman, drew from the artist’s work in the Swope collection and the collection of Indiana State University. Prior to his 18-year tenure on the Swope Board, Turman headed the art department at Indiana State Normal School (now Indiana State University). Turman documented the region’s people, history, and landscape as well as those from his travels.

The major exhibition of 2012-2013, Dual Visions: John Rogers Cox, Artist and Curator presented both the work of Swope Art Museum founding director, John Rogers Cox, and the objects he acquired for the Museum’s collection. Cox set the thematic course of the Swope as one of the first museums in the country to focus on contemporary American art. His depictions of the American heartland are important examples of mid-twentieth century Magic Realism. The exhibition included an interactive timeline representing the history of the museum in the context of local, national and world events.
Exhibitions The Schell Collection
November 2 – December 22, 2012 Education Gallery The first secretary of the Board of Managers, Carrie Cavins Schell, gathered works for the new collection and added important paintings and sculptures by Terre Haute and Indiana artists. Purchasing directly from artists, Schell gifted the Swope with works of art. Paintings and sculpture by T. C. Steele, Wentworth Parker and Janet Scudder were among the objects on view in the exhibition. The Schell Collection was exhibited in the Education Gallery
Paradoxical Currents by Ralph Larmann January 4 - March 23, 2013 Education Gallery Made possible by Baesler’s Market
Images of water were the subject of this exhibition of work by Ralph Larmann, who grew up by the Ohio River in Cincinnati. An associate professor of art at the University of Evansville, Larmann invited viewers to ponder symbolic and absurd dynamic caricatures of rivers. Part of the 2013 “Year of the River” programs, Rivers to Oceans: Selections from the Indiana State University Permanent Art Collection was organized by Barbara Räcker, ISU curator. The works of art on view in the exhibition presented depictions of natural bodies of water and the commerce, wildlife and recreational activity they attract.

The 46th Annual Student Art Exhibition
April 6 – May 11, 2013 Haslem, Hodge and Education Galleries, Gallery Three Made possible by Old National Bank The Annual Student Art Exhibition showcased the work of students from kindergarten through high school, including work from high school students from surrounding counties and home schools. Juror LuAnn Lamie, artist and art teacher at Jefferson High School, Lafayette, Indiana, selected the works for the high school portion of the exhibition, as well as the award winners. As part of the 2013 “Year of the River,” the Swope exhibited concept drawings for a public art project that was dedicated in Fairbanks Park in June. Sixteen artists designed 30 stepping stones that feature images related to the Wabash River.

SEPTEMBER 2012 • Friday, September 1 First Friday: Returning to Our Roots Works by William Turman, first present of the Swope Board of Managers and prolific artist and educator, were the focus of the September First Friday. Don Monroe, whose art career was inspired by the paintings of Turman, and Susie Pierce, director of the Graysville Academy, which has a permanent display of Turman’s work, spoke about the artist. • Friday, September 12 Alliance of the Swope Presents: Alexandra McNichols Independent Columbian-American photographer McNichols presented a talk entitled, “The Indigenous Displacements in Columbia.” • Saturday September 22 Swope Family Day: “Have You Read Any Good Art Lately?” Families enjoyed a self-guided tour and made their own art with the help of the Art Hoppers of the Swope Art Museum. Held in conjunction with the VCPL & Wabash Valley Literacy Coalition’s “Downtown Terre Haute Family Day,” the event was made possible by Duke Energy Foundation with support from a grant from Psi Iota Xi.

NOVEMBER 2012 • Friday, November 4 First Friday: Exploring Our Past The opening of The Schell Collection, activities that evening included a talk by curator Lisa Petrulis about Carrie Cavins Schell, a founding member of the Board of Managers, who donated many works to the Swope from her own collection and secured donations from other individuals and organizations. • Friday, November 16 Alliance of the Swope Presents: Susie Dewey Susie Dewey gave a lively talk about Joseph Duveen, Bernard Berenson and the issue of attributions for Old Masters such as Rembrandt. • Saturday, November 17 Swope Family Day: “You Are Here” Families explored images of houses and buildings in the galleries and then joined the Art Hoppers of the Swope Art Museum in creating pictures of their favorite places in Terre Haute to contribute to a huge mural map. • In the spring of 2012, all 5th-grade students from the Vigo County School Corporation visited the Swope Art Museum and had tours given by the Museum’s docents. The tours were made possible by Terre Haute Savings Bank. • Hundreds of students from 35 elementary, middle and high schools participated in the 46th Annual Student Art Exhibition. • Approximately 11,000 people visited the Swope Art Museum for free between July 2012 and June 2013 through the generosity of our members and sponsors. • 335 students participated in classes during the 2012 Summer Youth Art Program. 57 children received scholarships.
