The South West London Social Care Academy Hub is part of the Mayor’s Academy Programme covering the six London Boroughs of Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton and Wandsworth supporting local residents, especially those from underrepresented groups (BAME, Men, Young people (16-24), Older people (50+), Lone parents, People with caring responsibilities, Deaf and disabled) into good jobs in the social care sector by coordinating and facilitating key partners to work together to provide accessible and coordinated information and support. The Hub will function as a SWL ‘go to’ resource for information and support about jobs, training and careers in social care.

What is the role
Helping people to remain in their own homes and get the support they need and coordinating a person’s care across all areas.
What does it involve
Day to day duties could be:

• Dealing with issues such as social isolation and preventing necessary admission to hospital or a care home
• Working with external stakeholders to create a personalised care plan for the individual

What is the role
Support people to live independently, often following an illness or accident and helping them access support. This can be for a set period of time or until the goals have been met.

• Working with other professionals such as social workers and occupational therapists to make sure people get the right help
• Providing advice about how to use specialist equipment

RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT WORKER
What is the role
Responsibile for looking after the physical and mental wellbeing of vulnerable adults in care.

• Providing one-to-one advice or group support sessions teach daily living skills like budgeting, shopping and claiming benefits

What is the role

• Monitoring the quality of care they’re receiving and be professionally accountable for its delivery

What is the role
You’ll be responsible for providing nutritious and balanced meals whilst working with residents and staff to ensure individual’s dietary needs are met.

• Developing healthy and balanced meals in consultation with residents and staff
• Preparing meals to meet individual’s medical needs, for example people with dysphagia or allergies
• Considering how people’s religious and cultural backgrounds might impact on their dietary requirements

DRIVER
What is the role
Transport drivers provide a door-to-door service for people who can’t easily use public transport.
What does it involve
Day to day duties could be to:
• Plan the best route
• Follow a regular timetable
• Offer a door to door collection and drop off service
• Lift and help passengers on and off
• Use a tail lift to help wheelchair users access the bus
• Keep the vehicle tidy between journeys and fill up with fuel

What is the role
Carry out practical maintenance jobs, usually in a residential home or sheltered housing.
What does it involve
Day to day duties could be:
• Gardening
• Painting and decorating
• Electrical repairs
• Plumbing
• Repairing fixtures and fittings
• Carrying out health and safety inspections.
Skills needed
Skills in maintenance such as plumbing or gardening and electrical repairs.
Experience
Experience in a similar role in a social care and health setting.
Opportunities/career path progression
There may be opportunities to progress into more senior maintenance roles, or you might choose to go into other social care roles such as a care worker, senior care worker or rehabilitation worker.
