elcome to the Fall issue of Essential Naples – a quarterly lifestyle publication in Southwest Florida for health-minded locals who desire credible information on wholistic health and well-being trends. We launched our first issue this summer, however, if this is the first time you’re picking us up, you’ll find our coverage is 100% local with expert content that interests both Naples residents and professional wholistic practitioners. Essential Naples focuses on four essential lifestyle pillars – Health, Relationships, Finance and Purpose. In each issue, you’ll find articles on wide-ranging topics from local experts in each of these areas who have dug up infinite nuggets of wisdom to share with all of us. Please connect with them as they make this complimentary magazine possible. I hope Essential Naples will become a regular must-read for you! My perspective for this letter is a little different than most publishers. Instead of reviewing what you’ll find in the current issue, I like to provide an inspirational and thought-provoking piece. My passion is to open your mind to new ideas, new belief systems and shift your perspective to a healthier and happier way of living. I’m someone who always sees the positive in any situation and I hope to show you ways to do so as well. Here’s a taste of what you’ll find in my future letters! I believe recognizing an issue is the first step toward solving it. But how do we recognize something like the power of negative thoughts if we are unaware of them in the first place? Does it take a life altering event? Is it something we learn with age? Maybe we are exposed to a book or movie that introduces the concept? I will never forget the first time my eyes were opened to the concept of our thoughts creating our reality. I was meeting a potential advertiser for my magazine in Connecticut, she was the director of an energy medicine school. She said to me, in a whisper, “You see Diane, at this school we believe that we are all spirits having a human experience.” I almost fell off my chair. What the heck was she talking about?? Yet, there was a part of me for which that statement resonated so clearly and profoundly, I knew it to be true at the very core of my being. And so began my journey into studying transformational psychology, spirituality, mysticism, and the understanding that we are so much more powerful than we know, that we are spirit having a human experience and that we do, indeed, have the power to change our reality through thought. ost people do not realize that Alzheimer’s and dementia are the same. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia accounting for 70% of those afflicted below the age of 71 and 90% over the age of 71. Parkinson’s accounts for the next largest group of dementia patients. Alzheimer’s is known for its characteristic beta amyloid plaquing and Tau protein accumulation. The production of beta occurs in many cells and is protective in nature. Beta acts as an antibiotic, protecting our precious neurons from infection. It also acts as a binder to heavy metals like aluminum and mercury which are both neurotoxic and accumulate in the brain. Beta production increases when blood sugar levels exceed normal levels. Beta production is a natural protection mechanism to help protect the brain. However, problems occur when chronic infections persist, blood sugars stay high for extended periods of time, and heavy metals accumulate in the brain. The beta amyloid plaquing occurs in an attempt to wall off and protect areas of the brain from the above offenders. Our bodies are built for survival. It is better to die of Alzheimer’s after 15 plus years of plaquing than to be overcome with infection, heavy metal poisoning, and the effects of high blood sugars. There will never be a magic pill for Alzheimer’s because it has multiple causes and pathways. The key is to make the production of the beta amyloid unnecessary. We do this by identifying and correcting chronic infections, by identifying environmental toxins and eliminating them from the body, and by controlling our blood sugar levels in the blood.

s COVID-19 continues to spread around the world, it’s more important now than ever to make certain your immune system is at its peak. ormonal imbalance can be successfully treated with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We will start the conversation with “liver stagnation” (which leads to ‘liver fire’), which can cause PMS symptoms, hormone imbalance, and headaches.

Role of the Liver in Chinese Medicine

Western Medicine sees the liver as the physical organ itself, a meaty mass that sits on the right side of the belly. In TCM, the word “liver” refers to an entire meridian; a diverse organ system (including the liver and gallbladder) that governs everything from digestion and the breakdown of fats, to the smooth flow and balance of hormones. This makes perfect sense because when we go back to Western biology, hormones are indeed metabolized by the liver. Think of the liver meridian as the commanding officer of the body’s “Qi.” Qi is the energy that flows through the body. It is said to aid in the movement of blood and lymph as well as nutrients and toxins that come in and out of the cells. Nerve conduction, energy production, and cognitive awareness all depend on the presence of Qi. The liver meridian makes sure that Qi and hormones are delivered to the right place at the right time.

A healthy liver ensures you have strong mental focus and firm decision making skills (whereas brain fog and frustration would be a sign of liver stagnation). An unobstructed, healthy liver meridian will balance your hormone levels as they ebb and flow throughout your monthly cycle. When liver stagnation is present, your hormones will be off, you may experience PMS (and all the emotions that come with it), and you may have cramps. This is because the body doesn’t have enough Qi (energy) and has to literally work harder (the contractions that create cramping) to produce a smooth flow of blood. The liver meridian is the cleansing laboratory of the body. Over-consumption of fatty, greasy, and high cholesterol foods slows down its normal detoxification responsibilities. According to TCM, long-term blockage and stagnation leads to the generation of heat or “liver fire.” And no, there’s nothing necessarily physically ‘wrong’ with your liver itself. There’s simply an interruption or imbalance (“stagnation”) in the flow of energy throughout your “liver meridian” according to TCM. This is the most common diagnosis Westerners receive from their TCM practitioners because of onthe-go modern lifestyles.

he mind is the medium of thought and thoughts are things that originate in spirit and in time are formed on the physical plane. Your subconscious mind contains your personal evolutionary history and is often referred to as the soul. We’re all familiar with the conscious mind as the place where our attention remains most of the time when we’re awake. The unconscious part of the conscious mind is programmed like a computer. It stores memories that we call upon to identify, recognize and categorize events and situations that happen to us or that we encounter. It also stores information that you’ve come in contact with over this lifetime that may or may not serve you well. For example, if you grew up in a family that always struggled with money, then contained within the unconscious part of your mind are the beliefs that you are destined to struggle when it comes to money. As long as those beliefs are in the unconscious part of your conscious mind they are being impressed on your subconscious and this becomes your reality. Whether you realize it or not, your current reality is determined by how well your subconscious and conscious mind operate together. If you are not where you want to be in life it is because unconscious thought patterns have brought you here. If you continue to expect that you won’t ever get what you want and you expect to fail, then more often than not, you will get what you believe to be true. How do we break the pattern and change our thinking? First, identify your limiting beliefs – that voice

in your head that tells you you’re not good enough, or you can’t do something or it will never work. Once you are tapped into recognizing when you have these thoughts, interrupt the cycle and replace the negative thought with a positive one. Second, allow yourself time to hear what your subconscious mind is trying to tell you. This can come in the form of meditation, spending silent time in nature, or participating in an expressive activity such as yoga or dance. We live in a society that is constantly on the go, pushing us to move and think faster and faster. This is not conducive to hearing the messages that our soul has for us to follow our true destiny. Lastly, begin to surround yourself with people who have established optimistic and affirmative belief systems. Allow this group of fellow travelers on the path to help you. As you spend more time with positive, upbeat people, you will begin to notice subtle changes in your own belief system as the collective subconscious mind works as one to uplift the entire group. ental amalgams, or “silver fillings,” have been used to restore cavities since World War II and is still taught in dental schools around the world. Currently their use in the dental profession has dramatically decreased for several reasons: the main reason being that they contain mercury and mercury is toxic; not only to the environment, but to humans as well. This fact has been a topic of great debate and discussion for the past 20 years between dentists, scientists, researchers, FDA, ADA, EPA, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, as well as many other worldwide authorities. Amalgam fillings contain up to 50% mercury in their composition combined with silver, tin, copper and sometimes zinc. They were the filling material of choice because of their availability, durability, and were inexpensive as compared to gold. In recent years, they have come into question as to whether they are safe. The greatest risk of mercury vapor is present while placing and removing these “silver fillings”. It is a known fact that up to 80% of this mercury vapor is inhaled into the lungs especially when removing. Please, make sure if you have these fillings removed and replaced that you have them done safely with a qualified biological dentist who is certified with S.M.A.R.T. or PROTECT Protocol.

The Background on Mercury

Mercury is a heavy metal in liquid form at room temperature. Mercury is used in thermometers, (banned in 2003), blood pressure cuffs, fluorescent lighting, and dental restorations. Although banned presently, mercurochrome was a widely-used antiseptic for minor cuts and scrapes. Mercury is still present in some laxatives, diaper rash ointments, eye drops, and nasal sprays as well as diuretics and some mascaras. Recent research has demonstrated that mercury vapors are released from amalgam fillings during placement, removal, and especially for those who grind their teeth, chew gum, or eat hot foods or liquids. Mercury causes mitochondrial damage and wipes out DNA synthesis. Also, for those who like to “oil-pull,” please be sure and check with your biological dentist that it is safe for you.

The FDA and ADA Position on Mercury

There are alternatives to silver fillings, including bonded composite resins, porcelain, and zirconia to name a few. Although each material has its application, no material is without its limitations. Patients should get to know their dentist and ask questions as to their specific needs. Not only are there mercury free restorations, but fluoride free as well as BPA-free alternatives and Bis-GMA free alternatives. There are also pre-treatment protocols in place and post-treatment adjuncts to help mobilize and detox. Each patient needs to work with his Functional MD, Integrative Doctor, nutritionist or HCP/PCP, so that an individualized plan is mapped and the road to recovery is less of a biological burden and outcomes are positive. Compatibility also matters. These tests look for antibodies and whether or not a person has a “mismatch” or is highly reactive to a certain material. I strongly encourage patients to have a Biocompatibility test especially if their toxic burden is high, have difficulty methylating, have Lyme Disease, MS, Parkinson’s, Alzhiemer’s, or an autoimmune disorder. It is important to note and understand the difference between “Mercury Free” Dentists and “Mercury Safe” Dentists, who practice and utilize equipment and safety measures when removing amalgam fillings.

Although the FDA and the ADA do not encourage the removal of amalgams for toxicological purposes only, everything should be considered. Inflammatory processes, genetic predispositions, genome variants, general health, nutritional considerations and pH environment should be closely considered, to name a few. The more inflammatory processes an individual has, the more their oral health will be impacted. The most important step in your health is a comprehensive exam. Talk to your dentist! As recent as a few weeks ago, the FDA has announced that, “certain groups might be at a greater risk for potential harmful health effects of mercury vapor released from the mercury containing fillings”. And that, “certain groups of high risk individuals should avoid them”. Read between the lines, finally the information is getting out. What does the rest of the world have to say? Although only two countries have banned the use of amalgam fillings, Norway and Sweden (20082009), several other nations have recommended the, “eventual eradication of dental amalgams in dentistry”. In 2013 the Minemata Convention on Mercury, an international environmental agreement designed to protect human health and the environment from mercury emissions and compounds, was signed. This Treaty, signed by over 140 countries, (including European Union, US, Japan, UK, Israel, and the Netherlands) addressed and agreed that dental amalgams and, “their use must be phased down through a number of measures”. This agreement recognized the ability of mercury to bioaccumulate in the ecosystem and its significant negative effects on human health and the environment. Another reason why the EPA requires every dental office to have an amalgam separator installed.

Options for Safe Mercury Removal and Mercury Free Restorations


Mercury and most of its compounds are extremely toxic. The World Health Organization (WHO) and OSHA treat mercury as an occupational hazard and require specialized training in, “the occupational handling of mercury”. In 2005, the WHO warned that, “Mercury may cause harmful effects to the nervous, digestive, respiratory, immune systems and kidneys besides causing lung damage”. The FDA’s position and recommendations on dental amalgams has been modified at least three times in the last 10 years. The FDA states, “Dental amalgams are strong, long lasting, and are the least expensive type of filling material…FDA considers dental amalgam fillings safe for adults and children ages 6 and above”. Recently, the FDA has modified its views on amalgam, (Dec. 2017 update), specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding women. As of 2018, the European Union has this age at 15 and above. ADA considers, “Dental amalgams safe, affordable, and durable material,” and that the, “current and available data are insufficient to support an association between mercury release from dental fillings and the various complaints attributed to it” (2003-2004). These statements have been re-affirmed by the Council on Scientific Affairs year after year 2004-2009; then reaffirmed once again in the, “Update on Safety Concerns” in 2013.

have pondered on the word “resilient” this year, never thinking how it would become a word with so much meaning and power. We have all witnessed an unprecedented year with the highest concern for our health. We fear shaking hands, touching counters, encountering sick people, and covering with masks; all in an attempt to protect our health. As the virus grew across the world in early 2020 my hunger to learn more about our true protection also grew. Our bodies are designed to fight off viruses and heal health issues, but the problem lies in our own health insufficiencies, deficiencies, toxicities, and inability to know how to adapt our lifestyle to build a true resiliency within our immune system, our true first line of defense. I have been a registered dietitian (RD) for over 20 years and became an advocate for healthy eating in my teens, slowly evolving my diet and lifestyle into one of preservation, anti-inflammation, optimization, rejuvenation, and vibrancy. I believe we should never feel the ills of aging and dis-ease and should all have the ability to live at

What I have uncovered in my own quest for health is a better understanding of the cellular level. It all boils down to our blueprint, our DNA. Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Knee and Joint Pain

When all else has failed, it’s important to know that there are other treatment options available. One such option is hyaluronic acid injections. These injections are essentially a form of knee and joint pain treatment that are often used when other options, like pain relievers, have been proven ineffective. Hyaluronic acid molecules serve as a lubricant and shock absorber within your joints. It’s already found naturally within the body, although large amounts are often broken down and lost in individuals with osteoarthritis. Your body, and more specifically your joints, need hyaluronic acid for optimal functionality. If your joints do not have enough of it, the absence of an effective shock absorber means you can expect to experience regular stiffness and joint pain. Hyaluronic acid is injected in the form of a solution or gel. The injection is given in the same way a normal shot would be and is injected directly into the knee joint. In most cases, you will receive a series of shots over a two to five-week period. Injections are generally given one week apart in an effort to gauge their effectiveness. The overall effectiveness of these injections varies from patient to patient. It’s difficult to say exactly how well this particular knee and joint pain treatment will work for you. Based

on past studies and the wide use of the method, however, most patients find that these injections work wonders to significantly reduce pain and stiffness within their joints.

Stem Cell Allograft Therapy

Stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive way to heal the underlying causes of your knee pain, rather than treating the pain alone. It can slow down degenerative conditions and, in some cases, help new tissue grow. At Feel Amazing Institute, we use stem cells sourced from the umbilical cord. DHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) impacts 1 in 10 children now in the United States according to the CDC. It is the most prevalent mental disorder in children and the number one reason a child will be medicated. There has been a 2000% increase in medication prescribed over the last two decades. Unfortunately, medication has a very short-term benefit for some. In the long run, research shows that medication may do more harm than good. ADHD was once thought to be a chemical imbalance in the brain and these imbalances were permanent. However, recent research clearly demonstrates that there are asymmetrical differences between the left and right hemispheres in the brain. The vast majority of ADHD individuals have a right hemispheric weakness. More importantly, these weaknesses can be strengthened by specific sensory input using technologies such as neurofeedback, Interactive Metronome, and Neurosage.

Types of ADHD

There are 3 types of ADHD. Type 1 Inattentive (classic ADD), Type II Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Type III Combined, the most common. Most of us think ADHD is a problem that affects children only, but the reality is that the child does not grow out of this condition when they reach adulthood. Some-

times the person is able to compensate in some way but many continue to have similar symptoms as they did as a child. Even if the individual is able to become somewhat successful in life, the brain imbalance will often manifest as anxiety. The good news is that ADHD and anxiety can be effectively treated without medications and more often than not can be permanently resolved.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety or anxiousness is the most common mental illness in today’s world. Over 40 million Americans have been diagnosed with some anxiety disorder. According to recent news reports, there has been a 33% increase in anxiety since COVID-19. Many people are prescribed a SSI (serotonin reuptake inhibitor) type medication but still have symptoms. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that creates a calming effect on the brain and nervous system. The medication works by inhibiting the body’s natural process of breaking down serotonin. There are several natural substances that help the body produce more serotonin on its own. Also, neurofeedback and audio-visual training devices have positive influences on creating more serotonin. Most people are unaware that our gut, not our brain, produces 95 % of serotonin. An imbalanced

Most people are unaware that certain brain wave patterns demonstrated by QEEG/Brainmapping clearly demonstrate brain imbalances associated with ADHD and anxiety symptoms. Some of the more common brain imbalances for ADHD are excess delta, excess theta, and low beta wave activity. The more common brain wave imbalances for anxiousness are excess theta and low alpha brain wave activity as well as low beta in the left hemisphere and low alpha in the right hemisphere. Nasal Spray May Prevent COVID-19 Infection By Steven Frank

e wear masks to protect others from our exhaled droplets. These droplets may contain virus. It is a considerate gesture and quite helpful. However, when the moisture of the droplet evaporates (relatively soon after being exhaled) the viral particles remain suspended in the air that we breathe and they are MUCH smaller than the holes in our masks. Some virus will get through as the masks are not sufficient protection for the wearer. What can we do to protect ourselves? Researchers at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine found that the COVID-19

virus first attaches to the nasal passageways and begins its replication there, in your nose. The particles are then shed from the colonies in your nose and are inhaled (aspirated) into your lungs where it proliferates and damages your body. “If the nose is the dominant initial site from which lung infections are seeded, then the widespread use of masks to protect the nasal passages, as well as any therapeutic strategies that reduce virus in the nose, such as nasal irrigation or antiviral nasal sprays, could be beneficial,” said Dr. Richard Boucher, a distinguished professor of medicine and the director of the Marsico Lung Institute and the UNC School of Medicine. In fact, the authors of the study proclaimed that the nose is the dominant site as it has more of the surface

individuals as they used them. All recoveries from the infection were in 1 to 2 days. The lingering tiredness lasted 5 to 7 days. I often wish that the world knew how to use silver colloids appropriately. Drinking a teaspoon won’t help. It will get systemically distributed throughout your entire body and the tissue density of silver in the areas where it is needed will be far too low to be of any antimicrobial value. Laboratory testing from 2005 has demonstrated that the number of silver particles per microbe is critical. Too few particles and you don’t inhibit replication. That is why you must put it ON the germs. Coating the infected tissues directly and repeatedly is the key to making any EASC effective. Additionally, brand-comparison testing demonstrated that some commercial types of colloids are not even very good (compounded 250 or 500 ppm colloids are ineffective). I prefer a pure uncompounded silver colloid of 30 to 45 ppm. Colloids must be reapplied regularly to work well. The more you spray them, the better they work. You can safely do this all day long for weeks. But if you do it “once-in-a-while”, don’t expect results. While it is true that the virus can enter your body through your eyes and mouth, these paths are not as productive as they do not contain the surface receptors to support replication. These invaders can be handled by your immune system as they planktonically drift through the body looking for an attachment site; while you attack the main colonization in your nose. Following this protocol every day is not necessary. When you have been out in public, spray during the day and nebulize before bed. If you have come in contact with someone who is infected, do this for a couple of days. If you work in a hospital or in an environment with numerous infected patients, then by-all-means… do this daily. By using these techniques, you can protect yourself from infection and hasten the return to health if you are already infirm. Given how safe and effective this antimicrobial is (no one has EVER died or been injured from using a silver colloid), it’s a wonder why we haven’t seen it advocated under an “emergency use authorization”. But then… that’s the politics of medicine. If our FDA director had some experience in virology, respiratory infection or public health, he would end the pandemic with these techniques. Knowing that the initial and dominant stage of the infection occurs in the nose makes it clear that an antiviral nasal spray could STOP the replication before it gets going. Because of what they have learned in this landmark study, researchers at the UNC School of Medicine have endorsed the benefit of an antiviral nasal spray or nasal flushing in stopping COVID-19 infections. If only they had one… Any Enhanced Aqueous Silver Colloid (EASC) will do like our Sinus Relief. By using this spray regularly throughout the day to inhibit the replication of any virus that may have been inhaled, you can protect yourself from developing a further infection. Moreover, one could use this EASC in a neti-pot (Super Neti Juice) in the evenings to further the inhibition of replication in hard-toreach passages of the sinuses. But let’s take this a step further as well. At the end of each day, you can put 3 ml of an EASC such as Respiratory Relief into a nebulizer and breathe it deep into your lungs through your nose and mouth. This will inhibit replication of any virus that has been aspirated into your lungs, mouth or are hiding in your sinuses. The researchers determined that the receptors (ACE2) to which the virus adheres, are far more abundant in the nasal passageways than in lower respiratory tissues. This speaks highly to the use of nebulized EASC as there will be a lower density of virus to inhibit in the lungs. The respiratory use of silver colloids is not new. It was extensively tested against M. tuberculosis and MAC (mycobacterium avium complex) nearly 15 years ago by Klearsen Corporation. Laboratory testing was done in the mycobacterium laboratory of National Jewish Hospital in Denver Colorado and found to be extraordinarily effective. The efficacy and lack of side effects was far superior to any of the standard antibiotics. It was even patented (Pat. No. 6,749,597 and 6,454,754). Breathing the nebulized EASC through your nose and mouth allows you to protect another pathway that the researchers identified. It was noted during the study that virus can be aspirated from the mouth as well into the lungs. Of course, if you were to let the infection get too far before recognizing it, you might develop a sore throat. At that point, using the nebulizer every hour and spraying your throat with an EASC such as Throat Relief every 10 minutes will be necessary to end the viral infection and help your body return to health. This time of year we have many things in their peak, ranging from assorted pumpkins, gourds, squash, and a variety of heirloom carrots. Being able to combine classic warm comforting flavors like autumn spices, chocolate, and pumpkins is great, but even better when many superfoods can so easily be added to the party. Let’s face it, these are stressful times and who doesn’t want to eat their problems away? (Joking, not joking) Maybe that’s not the healthiest choice, but we all want a bit of comfort in these tough times. A bit of comfort food here and there (in balance with all things) seems appropriate. In my humble opinion, chocolate chip cookies are always a good option for this food category. In my home, cookies and sweets are not every day items, so baking these gems of deliciousness is a special occasion. With the holidays just around the corner, the kids, mom, and dad all want fresh baked goodies. How do we incorporate nutrient dense ingredients and use fresh produce from our local organic garden? The answer, of course, is Autumn Spiced Chocolate “Bunnies”. Autumn Spiced Chocolate “Bunnies” are a carrot cake inspired chocolate chip cookie. What is in the cookies that grows locally? A whole lot of freshly picked carrots, nearly 2 ounces of concentrated carrot per cookie. Also, raw honey that I have personally had the chance to harvest from local Bonita Springs hives. For the purposes of flavor, texture, and nutrition, we add ingredients such as: buckwheat, oats, pepitas (loaded with protein and fiber), virgin coconut oil (healthy fats), honey and palm sugar (low glycemic index), oranges (vitamin c), ginger (good for everything), and plenty of single origin fair trade dark chocolate (packed with mood elevating/ anti-depressant properties, heart healthy flavanols, and antioxidants). I hope you enjoy these “Bunnies” at home with your loved ones and that they inspire you to rethink how we eat so that we can make better food choices for ourselves and our communities.


rowing up on an organic, small family farm in rural Kauai, Hawaii during the 80s/90s; eating fresh, clean, and locally/ seasonally grown was just a part of everyday life. Eating things like “fruit loops”, “hot pockets”, and fast food were not a part of our diet. We had amaranth-o-s, a type of “cheerio-like” breakfast cereal made with amaranth (a superfood grain). Also, on an island food is an expensive resource, so we grew as much as we could, thus we always ate fresh produce and had a lot of nutritionally dense food as we had to make everything we ate count. Fast forward to my career as a world traveled executive chef, food consultant, husband, and father of two boys. My cooking style organically includes the use of all of those great things I was blessed to be around growing up, and incorporates “superfoods” (nutritional density) into as many dishes as I can. For many reasons, I feel like we need to challenge our modern food systems, perceptions, and general choices regarding how we eat. For example, chocolate chip cookies are a cherished classic for sure, made with flour, butter, brown sugar, eggs, and often heavily processed chocolate chips. However, does a really delicious and satisfying chocolate chip cookie have to be made exclusively with these ingredients? Just because that’s how it’s been done for so many years, must this be our only option? Do the traditional comfort foods we know and love have to be made with ingredients that lack freshness and nutrition? This brings me to the spring of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of this past spring many grocery store shelves were nearly empty. People stocked up on canned and frozen foods. Traditional restaurants are suffering, but fast food drive through and processed franchised food delivery joints are thriving. Where’s the freshness? Well, believe it or not, it is still here! The early autumn months are great growing and harvesting times for local farms. As an executive chef, I have been blessed to work with an abundance of fresh


Ingredients: (measurements by volume)

6-8 cups organic carrots chopped in medium chunks (or whole baby carrots) (will yield 3.5 cups dried carrot crumb) 2-3 oranges (zested & juiced) (reserve zest for dry ingredients)


6 ounces organic butter (room temperature) 6 ounces organic virgin coconut oil (room temperature) 6 ounces raw organic local honey

2 ounces organic coconut palm sugar 4 ounces organic brown sugar


6 ounces pumpkin puree (you may also substitute acorn or butternut squash)

2 large brown organic free range eggs from local farmers (Circle C has good local eggs) 2 tablespoons bourbon vanilla extract


2 cups organic all purpose flour ( pre-made gluten-free flour blend may be substituted)

1 cup organic brown rice flour (store bought or easy to make at home in VitaMix) 1 cup organic rolled oats (do not substitute steel cut)

½ cup organic buckwheat flour 3 teaspoons baking soda

3 teaspoons large flake sea salt (Maldon) (this will create a wonderful crunchy texture)

1 teaspoon organic fresh ginger (zested on microplane) or ½ teaspoon dried ground ginger 2-3 oranges zested (see above)

½ teaspoon each: ground cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise (adjust accordingly to your personal taste) 1 cup pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

3.5 - 4 cups dried carrot crumb (pack carrots firmly into measuring cup) (reserve 1/4 cup for garnish)

2 to 3 cups organic dark chocolate chunks

Special Equipment:

• Food Processor / Cuisinart or Robot Coupe Commercial Brand • 12” x 17” Baking Trays Lined with Silicone Baking Mats / Silpat (or parchment paper)

• Stand Mixer / Kitchen Aide (with 6 quart mixing bowl & paddle attachment) • Sifter or Fine Mesh Strainer • 4 ounce ice cream scoop

• VitaMix Blender (optional - for homemade brown rice flour)

Autumn Spiced Chocolate “Bunnies” Yields 1 baker’s dozen jumbo 4oz cookies


Start Early • Pre-heat oven to 350 (f). (If convection, fan on low speed.)

• Place carrots and orange juice into the bowl of food processor.

(I like to use organic, heirloom, multi-color baby carrots from a local farm, these are tender and sweet. I just trim the tops and give them a thorough wash. No need to peel or cut into smaller pieces before processing further.)

• Using a 4-ounce ice cream scoop, portion the dough balls onto the baking trays lined with silpats or nonstick parchment paper. Allow 2” space between each cookie.

• Gently press the dough balls down into a large “burger patty” shape (add extra chocolate chunks on top if you like). • Bake at 350 (f) for approximately 12-14 minutes / then turn heat up to 420 (f) and continue baking for approximately 5-7 minutes. • Remove from oven and enjoy warm with a glass of your favorite cold milk. (I like Ripple pea milk.)

Evenly spread out the carrot mixture over the surface of the tray.

In The Meanwhile:


• Approximately 2-3 minutes on medium speed.


• Sift together all dry ingredients and add into mixing bowl (except oats, flake sea salt, pepitas, dried carrot crumbs, and chocolate chunks). • Add sifted dry ingredients into wet ingredients, mix on slow to medium speed until a cohesive dough begins to form. • Slowly mix in remaining dry ingredients until dough is even and thick.

• Place dough into a refrigerator for approximately 30 minutes to become cold. (This is an important step or the cookies will melt before a thick shape can be set while baking.)

Chocolate note: you can either purchase chocolate chips or if you’re particular, you can make your own chunks with a block of your favorite dark chocolate. You need at least 2 cups in this recipe for an even distribution and proper ratio of dough to chocolate. I like it extra chocolatey, so I go with 3 cups. You can always place some extra chunks on top of the cookies before baking as well. I like to try different single origin fair trade chocolates and switch it up every so often, there’s too many good options to have just one favorite.

magine struggling with extreme sugar addiction for over 20 years. Imagine waking up and immediately craving candy, having to hide your sugary sweets from your spouse, and never being able to say no at a dessert table. You feel like you are stuck in a perpetual pattern you have no control over. Last fall, a new hypnotherapy client walked into my office and immediately claimed herself to be a sugar addict. I had heard clients label themselves this before but she was the first one to truly fit the title. The scenario above was her reality. Sugar ruled her life. She was constantly either craving it or eating it. As you can probably guess, this left her overweight and constantly exhausted. She had tried diets, cleanses, calorie restriction, you name it, but nothing could free her from this addiction. By the time she came to see me, it was her last resort. She barely believed in the power of hypnosis but felt that she could give it a chance. This is most people’s initial thoughts about trying hypnotherapy for the first time. They try it out of desperation and end up being pleasantly surprised by the rapid transformation that occurs through the power of hypnosis. At the beginning of our session, we took a deep dive into her sugar addiction and the many ways that it was ruling her life. I could tell that this woman was ready for some change! She was over the sugar and wanted to win her battle against

this constant craving. I knew hypnosis was just the solution she needed to beat this addiction. Hypnosis is so powerful because it works with the subconscious part of your mind. The subconscious part of your mind is where all of your habits and unconscious actions (things you do without having to think about it) are stored. Her sugar addiction was just a habit that needed to be transformed at a subconscious level. After years of eating sugar first thing in the morning and constantly grabbing the sweet treats at work, her brain created pathways that made those unhealthy habits automatic. She didn’t even have to think about it. She unconsciously made unhealthy decisions and then had to live with regret after the damage was already done. She would then go on to beat herself up which made it all the worse. Once I guided her into the state of hypnosis, I gave her powerful suggestions that aligned with where she wanted to be. I repeatedly told her that she was free and that this addiction was a thing of the past. I had her imagine all of the sweets that she has ever eaten in one room. Once she had a clear picture of this I told her subconscious mind that enough was enough. She has had her fair share. She has not been cheated out of the sweets. I also had her imagine her dream body and ideal self and told her that this is the woman that she will be showing up as from now on. Once the hypnosis

was complete, I was confident that major transformation had just occurred. Right as she came out of hypnosis her whole energy had shifted and she told me that she was leaving with an inner-knowing that sugar was a thing of the past for her. eople are recognizing that we can’t believe everything we are told anymore. Government agendas, hospitals getting money for COVID cases, social media censoring and even search engines like Google are now manipulated to provide certain information and hide other information. Hopefully, this prompts us to wake up and stand up. We have to stop living in fear. There are many facets to how we could have handled COVID better, but now it is time to move forward in a positive direction. The media makes it sound as though getting COVID is a death sentence. That’s not true, most people will survive. We have never been this afraid of the flu virus, even though some years it claims over 60,000 lives. The media talks about positive COVID cases as though it is a bad thing, when in fact we need natural herd immunity to get the virus under control. Positive cases without deaths are a good thing. Most people don’t realize that natural treatments for the virus were heavily censored, even though they were extremely successful. The CDC released information that less than 7% of deaths were solely from the virus, that the remaining 94% had co-morbid conditions. This speaks to the fact that many Americans are unhealthy which has a significant impact on the outcome of this virus. The virus shouldn’t be our only concern, it should be a wake-up call on so many levels - the over-reach of the government, medical errors, censorship and media influence to name a few. Not the least of which is the general health of America. Our whole culture is geared towards

making us sick. Groceries stores are full of factory produced food, non-organic produce and animals; many restaurants use poor quality food; and busy lifestyles that encourage grab-and-go. We’ve become a society that prizes “things” over experiences, leading to financial stress. We have over-packed schedules that lead to stress and lack of sleep. This is a recipe for a sick nation. The CDC reports that 35.9% of the population is obese and 33.3% is overweight. That is almost 70% of the population! These weight issues lead to high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, increased risk of heart disease and cancer. This is a main reason America spends 1.5 times more on healthcare than any other country in the world, 3 trillion dollars in past years. Luckily, our bodies have an inherent healing mechanism. Think about cutting yourself and miraculously the cut heals over as if it was never there. The same system is in place for serious diseases, the body can heal itself given the right tools. While this idea of the body healing itself may seem strange in our society of having a pill to “cure” every ailment, this healing principle has long been recognized. Are you nourishing your body or are you throwing anything in your body and expecting it to deal with it? Sugar and refined carbohydrates, abundant in our diets for the last generation, feed the bad bacteria and allow it to proliferate. This coupled with a diet high in processed foods and low in nutrition has created dysfunction within the gut. The good news is our inherent healing mechanism. Stop feeding the bad bacteria, nourish the good bacteria and watch your health improve. What is the best way to combat the virus? ry salt therapy, also known as Halotherapy, is very beneficial for overall wellness as it removes toxicity from the respiratory system, improves the function and appearance of the skin, and boosts the immune system. In the 1800s, a Polish doctor noticed that salt mine workers had fewer respiratory concerns than other miners. A German doctor also noted respiratory health benefits in people spending time in salt caves. There is a possibility salt therapy may play a role in prevention or treatment of coronavirus. In 2014, the Salt Therapy Association was formed by an international group of the most prominent industry experts, leaders, influencers and medical professionals, including Founding Director Dr. Daniel T. Layish, MD, a 20-year veteran pulmonologist and Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease. According to Dr. Layish, “It is too early to tell what impact halotherapy may have with this strain of the coronavirus, however, this coronavirus does affect the respiratory and lung system and dry salt therapy has shown to provide symptomatic benefit such as in a clinical study we conducted that focused on patients with cystic fibrosis.” Dry salt therapy is antimicrobial which kills some microorganisms or stops their growth. illions are in search of improved ways to manage type 2 diabetes. Medication and insulin products are continually being brought to the market. However, the continuous flow of new medication is not the ‘new’ treatment diabetes patients are interested in to facilitate a natural path to reverse diabetes. Managing the disease has gotten quite complicated as patients are prescribed two and three medications sometimes along with insulin while never reaching a normal A1c. Your health does not necessarily need to be managed this way. There is more in your control than you may realize. One course of action that is being overlooked is to rest and preserve your pancreas. It’s simple, it costs less than taking a myriad of medications, and offers the ability to avoid an ultimate progression of becoming insulin dependent. Resting your pancreas begins your ability to reverse the effects of type 2 diabetes. This process can change

the course of your disease and help reduce and possibly eliminate some medication and insulin. When that happens, you also avoid the potential side effects of drugs and the disease. Continued high glucose levels cause your cells to become insensitive to recognizing when insulin is produced; known as insulin resistance. Because of this, your pancreas has been overworked by constantly producing insulin in an effort to reduce the glucose in your bloodstream. Due to this continued cycle, beta cell burnout can ensue. Your insulin producing beta cells fatigue and begin to die off. Once this happens, you become an insulin-dependent type 2 diabetic. Take note, the diabetes drugs in the class called sulfonylureas (Glimepiride, Glyburide, Glipizide) may also contribute to beta cell fatigue. Consuming food and beverages which cause glucose spikes does not allow your pancreas the ability to heal. Resting your pancreas to heal and improve insulin production is a long-term solution. Not only should processed foods be avoided, there are healthy foods that may need to be avoided for a while, such as whole wheat bread and pasta, cereal, rice, potatoes, oatmeal, and other grains. Low glycemic foods that can help in the process are avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, and sauerkraut. Choose foods with fiber such as berries, spinach, leafy greens, broccoli, beans, flaxseeds, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, to name a few. Keep your animal protein to lean cuts. Interested in knowing how your pancreas is functioning? A C-Peptide blood test can be used to measure your pancreatic beta cell function. Slight improvements have been seen in as little as three months; however, it may be prudent to wait a minimum of six to nine months before retesting. Congruently, your A1c should be improving. Consistency is important. Cheating here and there impedes your progress. Each time you cheat with glucose-spiking food is a setback in resting your pancreas. Think of it as picking at a scab without giving your body the time and ability to heal. Consider each meal with the following question, “Is this getting me closer or further away to improving my insulin production?” Asking yourself this question makes it your decision on what you choose to eat. You have every reason to give your pancreas a break! •

Time to Think

f the past few months have given you more time for introspection, use it to improve your financial plan in a big-picture way. Even for the privileged among us who still have our jobs, are not on the front lines with the pandemic, and have not had anyone close to us felled by COVID-19, the current crisis has brought hardships big and small. Parents have confronted the daily struggle of trying to do their jobs while also home-schooling. Adult children have not been able to visit their elderly parents. Graduations, weddings, and even funerals have been put on hold or “Zoomified.” Yet as difficult as it has been, there have been a few silver linings too, especially for those of us lucky enough to not be touched directly by the crisis. One of the most valuable is that pressing pause on our usual routines has given many of us the opportunity to take a step back, get out of our ruts, and take stock. What do we really value? What do we really miss? What can we not wait to

do when this is all over? What “necessity” of our past lives, whether the daily purchased latte or frequent meals in restaurants, are we finding that we are quite happily doing without? Travel may be someone’s greatest longing, while others miss cooking and entertaining big groups of family and friends. Talking about how the pandemic has changed our thinking on a topic, or made us want to do more of something else, can help us feel like we are using the present situation productively. The current sense of isolation will not be for naught, because it is shaping how we intend to use our lives in the future, when we once again have a full set of choices before us.

Many of us are operating with an incredibly vague notion of how much we really need to save in order to achieve our financial goals and find security. As most investors know, the biggest determinant of whether you achieve financial success is how much you spend versus how much you save. But as important as it is to make sure your intake exceeds your outgo, budgeting can seem like sheer drudgery. Here is a different way to think about budgeting. Simply begin to take note of how various discretionary expenditures make you feel. It can be incredibly illuminating. osing elasticity and seeing some laxity in your skin? You aren’t alone. In our lower to mid 30’s the quantity and quality of collagen production in our cells begins to decrease, leaving us wishing for the days when our skin stayed firm on its own without our hands helping it in our bathroom mirror. We rely so much on collagen to give us our youthful appearance. Being as it is the most common and abundant protein in the body, it creates the framework and structure for our skin and gives us the firmness we seek. How can we get it back naturally once we begin to lose it? Radio frequency is the key. As the technician rubs the modality of choice over the skin, it gently releases energy in the form of electromagnetic waves into the dermis and hypodermis (subcutaneous tissues), which then stimulates collagen.

How Does Radio Frequency Work?

A deeper level of the skin is heated to 122-167 degrees Fahrenheit (or 50-75 Celsius). Maintaining a temperature of over 115 degrees Fahrenheit for over three minutes causes your body to release heat shock proteins which leads to tissue remodeling resulting in a tighter, smoother, more lifted appearance. It can even break down fat (facial and jawline slimming) and adipose tissue (the turkey neck we all complain about).


Where Can It Be Used on the Body?

Anywhere! The eye area, neck, jawline, and crepey arm and knee areas are some of the most popular body parts we treat. It can also be used to tighten your thighs, abdomen, and back and can even tighten skin from weight loss and surgical procedures.

How Else Can Radio Frequency Be Used? In tandem with multiple hand pieces, you can even use microneedling with radiofrequency to enhance your effects from a procedure you already know and love. It can also be used to reduce lumps from fat removing procedures and other surgeries.

What Does It Feel Like and is It Safe?

It is a very comfortable procedure! It feels no warmer than a hot shower and is usually described as feeling like a hot stone massage. he most dramatic experience I learned about came from my experience as well as medical errors due to technical mistakes. One of my patients had no side effects to radiation and the radiation therapist thought his machine was malfunctioning until he saw my name in her chart and then realized, “This is one of Siegel’s crazy patients.” When he asked her why she had no side effects she said, “I get out of the way and let it go to my tumor.” The examples which I found to be more impressive were when people who thought they were receiving chemotherapy were not due to an error preparing the medication and people who thought they were being radiated were not due to no radioactive material being replaced after the machine was repaired. The doctors involved felt terrible. The radiation therapy doctor said to me he had been treating patients for a month and just discovered the problem when the radiation therapy machine underwent its monthly inspection. I told him he didn’t realize what he was telling me. He repeated how terrible he felt. I said, “You were still “treating” people. You obviously had people experiencing side effects and shrinking tumors, even though the machine wasn’t working, correct?” His eyes bulged and he said, “Oh my God you’re right.” Believe in the mind-body unity and words. Our body responds to our beliefs and I’d rather lie therapeutically to a patient than give them a list of side effects of a treatment and induce all of them because of what they hear from an authority figure. When I did have to share some negative side effects I would add that they don’t happen to everyone; like everyone isn’t allergic to peanuts. The cousin of my father-in-law’s nurse’s aide was told she was terminal with leukemia and it was a waste of time to receive chemotherapy which would only make her feel worse. When the

aide heard this, she called her cousin in North Carolina and told her to come up here because, “Doctor Siegel makes people well all the time.” She arrives and I am told about it so I admitted her to the hospital. I sat on her bed and explained leukemia was not something I could treat but that I would ask an oncologist friend to come and see her. Then I gave her a big hug and went to call the oncologist. My oncologist friend told me he agreed with her doctor about the likely outcome, but would give her treatment to make her feel there was hope. His letters to me began with, doing well, and ended with, in complete remission. She went home to drive her doctor nuts. What I heard later was that she told her cousin, “When Doctor Siegel hugged me I knew I would get well.” I also know patients who left their troubles to God and had their cancer disappear. That is called self-induced healing and not a spontaneous remission. So, learn from exceptional patients about survival behavior. Ask them why they didn’t die rather than saying what doctors tend to say, “You are doing very well. Whatever you’re doing keep it up.” Then they learn nothing from their patient. Personality characteristics and survival are inseparable. Last but not least remind patients of their potential. We are created with survival mechanisms so we can heal wounds, alter our genes and overcome various diseases.
