LEGENDARY RULES OF PUTERI GUNUNG LEDANG

uteri Gunung Ledang features Natasya (Atikah Suhaimi) as the ‘Princess’ who has a crush on her boss, Rayyan (Ammar Alfian) who owns a modelling agency. Then, we bring Azley (Sobhi Saddi), a supermodel and a former school flame played

by Idris Khan into the picture. A new blend is felt when Rayyan has to fulfill the seven conditions in order to win Natasya’s heart.

Here are some bits and snippets of our interview with the cast during their final wrap up.

Lucky enough, we had the privilege to have met the beautiful Zaidah Awang, famously known as A. Aida, the producer of the drama series. A. Aida commenced as a small production during the early stages of setting up and her company has expanded and prospered this far! A. Aida is known for producing top-rated dramas including the popular "Halimah Jonggang". Impressively, her 'Halimah Jongang' drama has created many controversies and become the talks of town. So, let’s get some insights from the producer! On her latest drama production and her ideas of producing a fresh brand-new ‘Puteri Gunung Ledang’ from the legendary stories that we are all accustomed to.

What inspired you to come up with the modernized version of Puteri Gunung Ledang?

Aida: Actually, I get the best ideas during my most random moments.

But I was inspired by watching this Hollywood movie and I wanted to apply what they did with this drama.

Why and how did you modernize Puteri Gunung Ledang?

Aida: Well, I bet you that when most Malaysians hear ‘Puteri Gunung Ledang,’ they will immediately think of the old Malay warriors.

So, I wanted to change it and tell a similar story that suit with the current generation. I want it to be fun yet meaningful. Not something that will bore the audience.

Don’t be fooled! The characters aren’t the same as the legendary story.

There is no Hang Tuah or Sultan in this movie. We only borrowed the idea of setting seven rules that Rayyan must fulfill in order to win Natasya’s heart. Even those rules are different than what we learnt from the old PGL.

What are those seven rules set out in this drama then?

Aida: Well, it wouldn’t be fun if I spill it all! You need to watch the drama to know! I’ll only share a few then if you really want to know. 1. Rayyan must stop drinking. 2. Rayyan must stop going out clubbing. 3. Rayyan must fast. 4. Rayyan must pray 5 times a day. Watch the drama if you want to know the last three.

Next, we have also managed Suhaimi Lua, the director of Puteri Gunung Ledang. Suhaimi has ventured into the media industry for seven years in which one of his earliest productions was with TV3. Suhaimi has been directing for three years now. Previously, Suhaimi has been involved with many productions for TV3 and one of the most acclaimed dramas directed by him was ‘Maaf Saya Tidak Sempurna’ on slot Akasia TV3. For a change, he now wants to share his creative talent and expertise with HyppTV especially through Puteri Gunung Ledang, the first drama he will be directing for HyppTV Saluran HyppSensasi.

Suhaimi, share with us your experience as a director and how it was for you to direct this drama?

Suhaimi: This is actually my first time directing a drama that suits the younger audience and directing for HyppTV. PGL is a romantic comedy that caters to the tastes of the young adults and teenagers. I began my role in this industry as a producer seven years ago then I ventured into directing about three years now.

How is it working with the cast for this drama?

Suhaimi: I enjoyed working with them. We’re all like a family. We learn and share from each other.

Most of the cast are new to me except for Ammar Alfian and Sabhi Saddi. We chose a lot of good-looking new fresh faces for this drama; We have about twelve ‘abang abang sado’ for girls out there to drool over!

Atiqah, how was it stepping into the shoes of a tomboy?

Atiqah: My character is very interesting. It was a bit hard for me to act out as a tomboy but it was such a fun experience. I had to watch Aaron Aziz and mimic his character to get that macho and masculine look and feel.

So who is Natasya in this drama?

Atiqah: Natasya is a girl who dreams of becoming a model. She’s been dreaming to be a model ever since high school and with the support of her mother, she moved to KL to achieve that dream. It was hard in the beginning because she’s a tomboy, dresses like a man and often gets laughed at especially back in her ‘kampung’ at Kaki Gunung Ledang. Even when she was in KL,

she first started as an office clerk until she slowly moved her way up to become a model then things started to change when her playboy boss notices her beauty and feminine ways.

No one likes to face the games of a playboy but Natasya certainly can manage Ammar Alfian Aziz, the player boss in Puteri Gunung Ledang. Ammar ventured into the media industry since 2007 when he was chosen as one of the finalists for HERO Remaja. Ammar has been casted for several dramas such as ‘Dia Atilia,’ ‘Tari Tirana,’ ‘Sirah Cinta’ and ‘Sahara.’ Action-movie lovers, you may be familiar with Ammar as he was also one of the gangsters in ‘KL Gangster 2’ film. Besides this, Ammar is also a model and has a heart for dancing.

I’m very close to my boss and of course I tried to compete to get her but I’m loyal to my boss-friend and wouldn’t jeopardize my friendship.

But then…surprise! You have to watch the ending to know who the girl chooses. That’s the climax.

What’s interesting about your character?

Well, some people at the agency thought that I was gay and they were all shocked to find out that I had interest for females. This issue came up when I was haunting for my mystery girl.

Ammar as Rayyan the playboy boss in PGL

Ammar, who are you playing in this drama?

I’m Rayyan in this drama. Rayyan is a rich playboy, a mama’s boy. He doesn’t want to get married until he finds the one who can get along well with his mother. His mother is such a tigress that she even scares the maids away. Rayyan likes to bring girls home and most of those are girls that are not up to his mother’s standards until he found the one girl named Natasya. Let me tell you, it’s not easy to get her. What kind of a girl sets 7 rules these days, right? Not only that, you’ve got to compete with two other men who like her too.

How was it, playing this character?

I’m more of myself in this drama so it’s not that challenging to play Rayan. I’ve always been called to play mad, violent and ferocious characters so this is an opportunity for me to show another side of me. The public hasn’t seen my funny and gentle side yet.

Models are certainly eye-catching and one will never stop drooling over the top model in Rayyan’s Agency played by Sabhi Saddi. Sabhi Saddi is recognized for his song premiered in ‘Bencinta’ featuring Nieyl. Sabhi Saddi first became known for his music especially with his recording titled ‘Sayang Giler’ with the KRU Studios. In terms of his career path, Sabhi Saddi started off with modeling in Sabah first, then he focused on singing while acting is his side-hobby.

Sabhi Saddi, you are a supermodel and one to watch out for in the modeling agency. You like Natasya. How is your relationship with your boss then?

Sabhi Saddi: Those who watch this drama will see me as the guy who

Which scenes did you enjoy to play in this drama?

I really like the scene where Natasya was observing me as I had to fulfill the 7 promises. I didn’t know that she actually spotted me eating ‘cendol’ when I was supposedly ‘fasting.’ So, I had to avoid Natasya from knowing the real truth of my whereabouts and what I’m doing. It’s funny.

Rosli, how did you come about with Mana Burger Mak? Rosli (Director): This is Cat’s story. We wanted to portray a responsible man as the backbone of the family and we took it from Cat’s experience of having to buy a burger for his mother. We added a comedic twist to it so the audience will stay and enjoy the jokes while also applying what they watch from the telemovie as a life lesson.

Share your experience as a director, particularly for this production?

Rosli: Before this, I was an assistant director for Ahmad Idham, starting with Adnan Semp-It. Then, I signed up with David Teo and did my first telemovie, Jodoh Memang Tak Pergi Ke Mana, which premiers is June. The one we’re shooting today is for August. Directing requires a lot of thinking and creative skills as we have to continuously review the script and see whether it’s up to par with today’s audience’s taste of jokes.

mong some familiar faces you will see in Mana Burger Mak are Syuk Balas, Adibah Yunus, Farrish Zaquan preferably known as Cat Farish and Noryati Taib also known as Mak Uda. The story is in fact more engaging when the telemovie maintains some of the characters real names. Syuk Balas will be playing the mama’s boy named Shukri, Cat will still be Cat, the protective brother to Bella played by Adibah Yunus and Mak Uda still uses her nickname in this telemovie.

Cat, share with us the story behind Mana Burger Mak. Cat: This is actually a real story that happened to my mother and me. There was a famous burger stall in front of my house. The queue was always long.

One day, my mother asked me to buy that burger but it was closed. One man mentioned to me that the stall owner’s relative passed away. Then, he told me to go down the road to another burger stall

belonging to the owner’s little brother.

Suddenly, I realized that it must have also been closed since both stall owners are siblings. One day, I came when it was opened but the queue was still long. Later, I was told that the burger was finished and only the bun was left. As a son, I wanted to fulfill my mother’s wishes so I went to a nearby shop and bought a burger then I asked the guy at the stall to cook it for me with his bun for my mom.

That’s how we got inspired for Mana Burger Mak?.

Who is Cat in the telemovie?

Cat: Cat is Bella’s brother and he has a conflict with Bella’s boyfriend. Cat is just like any other brother, being protective SWITCH ON 033

SYUK BALAS and wanting the best for his sister. Cat and Bella are both parentless and yet they are independent.

Syuk, how is your love relationship with Bella in this telemovie?

No doubt that Shukri loves Bella but he was profoundly hurt when he found out that Bella used the engagement money that they both kept since high school to open a burger stall for a living. He cared less about Bella’s late father which infuriated Cat and displeased him. The love relationship went into turmoil when Shukri kept silent and distanced himself away from Bella.

ADIBAH YUNUS Why is Shukri such a mama’s boy?

Shukri: Since young, Shukri is used to being the man in the family and taking over his dad’s role. He always needs his mother’s opinion which Bella can’t stand.

Adibah, how did Bella manage to accept and handle a mama’s boy in this telemovie?

Adibah: Well, she knows it’s hard but she will always come up with new questions and divert them to doing things that don’t require his mother’s approval. She always loses but she’s patient and Syuk is the only love of her life. You have to watch it. It’s funny.

Mak Uda, what are some moral lessons that we can apply from watching this?

Mak Uda: As a parent, we cannot control our children too much. We need to cut them some slack and let them have some freedom, especially when they want to work hard. We all love our children and want the best for them.

Jodoh is a lovely unpredictable miracle that one is uncertain of but one can surely guarantee that it is a story written by the one above. If it’s destiny, then it is meant to be. ABOUT THE PRODUCER Dato' Rafiena Ezanee Ramli started venturing in the entertainment industry as an actress.

Erwin, tell us about yourself.

My full name is Mohamed Erwin Shah Evan Dawson. I’m 26 years old. I’ve been in this industry for 5 years and this is my first year in Malaysia. I’m from Singapore, a mixture of Malay and New Zealand parentage.

What character are you playing in Jodoh Sebelah Pintu?

I’m playing Irfan. Somehow, I want to be that guy that Mona likes or at least somewhat along that line. Irfan is simple, cheeky and naughty at the same time.

How do you find this character?

I see a lot of similarities between Irfan and me. When it comes to acting, I find that the simplest character is always the hardest one to act out because the simplest character does not have the simplest trait. The challenge of an actor is to be as natural as you can and to not show that you are acting. If you’re a gangster, you would have a general idea of how to behave because a gangster has its own stereotype - mad, cynical and violent.

When you have a simple character, it’s really hard because you don’t want to reveal yourself simultaneously.

Emma, tell us about you.

How did you venture into the acting industry?

What character are you playing in Jodoh Sebelah Pintu?

I actually intended to be a singer but due to some circumstances I became an actor. I tried Singapore Idol but then it was hard for me as I had to participate in the National Service.

After my National Service, I pursued voice acting. It all happened when my friend invited me to audition with him for Anugerah Skrin and I even joked with him about getting the role and I got it. It’s when I was there that I started appreciating acting and its work creation. It involves a lot of creativity and it’s interesting. You spend your time reading the character without any pressure or deadline.

My name is Fatimah Rohani Ismail. My father’s from Terengganu and my mom is from Scotland. I’m 23 years old. Even though my mom is from Scotland, I’m more comfortable conversing in Malay as my father made sure I spoke the language properly since I was a child.

I’m Mona. Mona is a firm lady yet at the same time she loves to be pampered and has this gooey and coquettish 'manja' attitude. She goes insane after the death of her fiancé up to a critical point, she will just start blabbing and yelling nonsense at the glance of men. Her bestfriend, Julia, even becomes concerned and asks her to visit a doctor because she was worried I was losing my mind.

How do you see yourself in this character?

Just a little bit. I’m a rough lady since I was little. I like to watch WWE while other girls had Barbie dolls as gifts to play. I watched Hantu Paku when I was

small so I’m not an ordinary girl. That’s where Mona and I am similar because we’re vicious in that sense but the part where she starts shouting without any particular reasons…. No, that’s not me at all. (Laughs)

How was it for you to act out this character?

I find that this character is not just an ordinary character you always see. I mean, I have to always yell, scream and become mad the whole time throughout the shooting. Compared to the characters I’ve gotten before, I always played sad characters, which involved a lot of tears and cries. This is something different.

Can you imagine? I had to throw a mop in my very first scene for Jodoh Sebelah Pintu!

How’s your working schedule?

Honestly, I’m quite busy. Friday is my only resting day because I have Quran recital classes on Friday evenings. Even if I do have days off, they’re usually because of events and photo shoots.

MOVIE FEATURE Kamal, tell us about yourself.My

full name is Ahmad Kamal Ahmad Ali. I’m 29 years old and from Pekan, Pahang. I’m a full time actor and TV host or emcee. I’ve been in this industry for 7 years.

Who are you in Jodoh Sebelah Pintu?

I’m playing Badrul who’s a doctor in this story. He’s not a typical doctor. He’s got a dual personality. At home, he’s different. I mean, he’s super-active like he runs around and then stops a car in the middle of the road out of nowhere.

His friend, Irfan, is just the same. Both of these doctors are cuckoos because they like to playfully tease their next door neighbours who are girls! Actually, Badrul does this because he needs to cover something. He knows Mona is his fiancée but he’s got a lot to cover. You’ll see.

How did you step into the shoes of this character?

I see myself in this character. I take a bit of myself. When it comes to the fun part in the drama, I bring myself in. Badrul is more or less like me especially the playful part. (Laughs)

Is this your first time working with Michael Ang? No, I’ve worked with him a few times before for movies and drama series.

Where is your favorite holiday destination?

Anywhere, as long as it’s on an island. I like to dive. I do cave jumping, jet skiing, parasailing, boat-riding, and just chilling in the water and saying hello to the fishes but not fishing! (Laughs)

Lia, tell us about you.

My name is Alia Afiqah Abden. I’m originally from Tawau, Sabah. I’m 23 years old. I’ve been in this industry for 3 years and I’ve lived in KL for 5 years now.

Who are you in Jodoh Sebelah Pintu?

I really want to go to Europe. I would love to have a Euro trip, touring around Europe by train like a backpack traveler.

I have been to Barcelona. I would love to go around Europe with my friends one day.

I’m playing Julia. Julia is a teacher.

I have Mona as a housemate but we’re so different. Mona is the innocent one but I’m the girly and naïve one. I start becoming girly whenever there’s a guy. Even if the man is married, I really don’t care as long as it is a man! (Laughs) Julia is just hyper-active!

Are there any places in Malaysia which you’ve been dreaming of yet do not have the chance to visit?

How was it for you acting this character out?

Where is your dream destination?

Yes, there are a few islands, which I’ve wanted to go. I would like to visit Sipadan. If I have the chance, I would also like to climb Mount Kinabalu.

What’s your favorite Malaysian food?

Well, that would be Gulai Tempoyak Ikan Patin because I’m from Pahang! (Laughs)

Where do you like to eat?

There’s this one stall in Kampung Baru where they start cooking delicious and hot fried chicken around 1 am. It’s special because you also get to eat with pulut (glutinous rice).

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know.

If I weren’t an actor, I would have become a football player. I was called to play for states region this one time but I went for a barbeque instead. So now, I have to balance myself by playing football to keep fit.

It’s actually quite difficult, I must say. Although it’s fun, I have to be all crazy in this set. Julia and I are not the same. At some point of time, I do question and wonder whether how I acted was what Michael wanted.

He’s been supportive throughout the entire shooting and trusts me in giving more than what I can in this industry.

Is this your first time working with Michael?

No, I’ve worked with him a lot of times! This year, all of the dramas and films I’m in are with him. In fact, I’m also accustomed to working with Emma. This is my first time working with Kamal and second time working with Erwin.

What’s your favorite football team?

Manchester United, of course (soaring proudly) and Real Madrid!

Who is your role model?

My dad. My dad works hard for my family up till now and we all can see that. Even when he’s ill, he will still go to meetings and find money for the family.

He’s a very hardworking man. I would love to be like him.

What’s your favorite daily attire?

I’m just a simple guy. Jeans, a white T-shirt, sneakers and yeah, that’s basically it. I mean, I do follow fashion trends but hey, this is me. If you watch Hollywood, even the celebrities themselves don’t dress up on a daily basis. It’s only while on set that we have to.

If you were to go on a holiday trip, where would it be?

Where do you like to spend your holidays?

I don’t have any specific place but my aim would always be to spend a holiday where there are crystal clear waters like in Greece or Maldives.

It would be a place by the beach without much pollution.

Among all the places you’ve been to, which one is your favorite?

I’ve been to Phuket, Bali, Bartam, Australia and India. I would have to say Bali because that’s where I’ve had the most memorable moments.

What’s your favorite Malaysian food?

Malaysian and Singaporean foods are not that different. If it’s a sweet treat, I would go for 'apam balik'.

Where is your favorite dining spot in Malaysia?

For 'lauk', it would be at Warung Leko at The Curve.

Sports. I don’t watch sports. I play sports. I love moving. I don’t like lazing around. If I had the time, I would love to do hiking.

I like to spend my holidays on islands such as Pulau Redang, Terengganu because I love scuba diving. I have a diving license. Let’s say I have 4 days off. That’s already enough for me to spend my days out and go diving. If I have one week off, then I would usually spend my time travelling overseas like recently, I went to Japan and spent my holiday at Disneyland and Disneysea.

What’s your favorite daily attire? Leggings,

baggy jeans, cardigan and a simple hijab. I don’t like to be too fashionable.

During days off, I like to keep it low with minimal makeup.

What’s your hobby?

Sleeping. (Laughs) If I get free time, I would sleep because actresses don’t get enough sleep. When I’m free, I like to stay at home and spend time with my family. I also enjoy drawing.

What’s your favorite color?

Red, gold and black!

Do you like to travel solo or do you bring others to tag along?

Family and friends. It’s dangerous to travel alone.

What’s your favourite Malaysian food?

Nasi Lemak. Every morning, everyday, I would always eat Nasi Lemak especially with my dad.

If you could be the actor in your dream movie, which movie would it be?

I would very much like to act in that film where it tells the story of how Malaya became Malaysia. It’s a very political film. I love history, and I especially love Malay history. I even named my cats Teja, Jebat and Nadim. That’s how much I love history. For the Malays, we have a very deep history in terms of many myths and legends. It’s not been showcased to the world. So I would like to be able to act in such movies so that I can show our deep Malaysian heritage and culture to the world.

What do you do for fun during the weekend?

I wished I still remembered what fun is, because I'm always busy with shoots and we usually finish between 1-2 am. But if I have time, I like to play with my cats. I also ride my Harley or Vespa. And I will ‘kemas rumah.’ That’s about it...

What are the top 5 criteria a girl must have to date you?

1. She must be able to handle herself well in various situations.

2. She must be able to make good conversation. If she can talk to me for an hour or two, that would be great. I would love it even more if she knows about history. We can talk about fashion, but I would enjoy it more if she knew about the history of the fashion designer, and where they get their inspiration from.

3. If she can get the attention of my grandmother, she wins. My grandma is very hard to please.

4. Knowing when to text me and knowing when not to text me. For example, If I’m working, and she suddenly starts whining I don’t have time for her. It gets a bit difficult. I would like a girl who supports my work and busy schedule.

5. Having the same interest as me, that would be a great bonus. If she likes vintage cars and bikes, we could go to a museum or exhibition together.

Who is your favourite Hollywood leading lady?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would very much like to be the middle person where I would bring film students from Singapore down to Malaysia and the film students from Malaysia to Singapore. A student exchange program, I would like to be the liaison officer. My vision is integrate both the Malaysian and Singaporean film industry.

Ferrante, the movie hit Malaysian shores on July 23rd. Different from the two previous movies which was shot in Los Angeles and New York, Shaknado 3 was filmmed in Washington D.C. within 17 days. Sharknado 3 is already bringing a global wave of anticipation and excitement from all corners of the world as its previous movie Sharknado 2: The Second One which was received as the most-watched original movie on Syfy.

2. Have you gone shark diving?

How was the experience for you?

Yes, I have many years ago. I went shark diving off the coast of Catalina Island, which is about 26 miles away from Los Angeles. We didn’t really have to go deep.

We were just submerged right at the surface level and after a couple of hours, we had some really big sharks. I was happy the sharks stayed in the water.

Jaws. The original movie is still one of the scariest movies today.

4. What’s your top 5 bucket list?

5. Have you been to Malaysia or any other parts in South East Asia?

I would love to come to Malaysia or any parts of South East Asia. I was supposed to explore Cambodia and Thailand for my honeymoon but just before my wedding, there was a volcano eruption in Iceland. This was 5 years ago and it blew ashes all over Europe so it was difficult.

6. Have you tried eating 'durian'?

I’ve actually never tasted it but I am willing to try anything once - though I do hear the smell of it can knock your grandma off her feet!

7. What’s your fashion style?

Sharknado 3 is not just about slashes and chainsaws after all.

1.If you could be a shark, what type of shark would you be?

Well, depending on the day or where I am going, I can be a jeans and t-shirt guy or, a sharp suit with great ties! I also have a new clothing line called ChainsawBrands.com. It’s really “comfort-wear” or “relax-wear” for the masses! Just my style!

8. What are some of your greatest achievements in life?

By far, my greatest achievement in my life is my family. I have been blessed with so much in my career but being a dad and husband are by far my greatest achievements. The rest is just icing on the cake.

Of late we see many modern re-telling of popular fairytales in both television and the Silver screen. In the Silver screen, many would agree ‘Maleficent’ is the best of them all.

On TV, going strong for three seasons now is ‘Beauty & the Beast’ which was first aired in October 2012.

Everybody knows the story of the ‘Beauty & the Beast’. Although one story may differ from the other, the franchise remains the same; a beautiful girl and an ugly man fall in love. The 1980’s version made popular by Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, both are Hollywood veterans. The newer version is edgier and sexier with Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan playing leading roles.

Beauty & the Beast Season 1 Season 1 started off with an unsolved murder. Catherine Chandler played

The same organization that created Vincent’s beastly nature, Muirfield has been tracking him down. Ghosts are scary beings. But the thing is, how much do we actually know about them, apart from what we are told?

Phng Li Kim, the host of The Paranormal Zone is on a mission to find out. The Paranormal Zone is unlike any other reality-based horror documentary. In the third season, audiences will follow Li Kim as she visits haunted houses and abandoned villages in Sabah, speaking to witnesses, researchers, scientists and spiritualists on the investigation of UFOs in Malaysia; following on the evidence

of Bigfoot in Malaysia and as she travels to Indonesia to learn about Black Magic and spirits, and Singapore to learn about the truth about the Death House in Sago Lane.

When asked about the most memorable incident that happened during filming the third season, Li Kim told us the story of a lady who was a victim of black magic.

“This lady that I interviewed in Jogjakarta went through so much pain as a victim.

She had 200 nails taken out of her body through a medical procedure. And listening to her story struggling through her pain, just seems unbearable,” she said.

Then I became curious. I’ve heard stories about the casts of the classic ‘Poltergeist’ being disturbed by these paranormal

beings, resulting in the death of one of their characters. To feed curiosity, Switch On asked Li Kim if anything ‘bad’ ever happened post-filming. As a firm practitioner of Dorje Shugden, Li Kim practices certain rituals before and after production of The Paranormal Zone.

She would recite mantras, telling spirits that she means no harm. “I tell them (the spirits) that I wish to end it all there,” she added.

This reality-based documentary is definitely for both believers and non-believers. Due to the nature of the program, where it tackles on the investigation of the classified, strange and unexplained phenomenon with the end goal in mind to inform the audience on both mystical and scientific, or academic

perspective on topics such as haunting, regression, ghosts and spirits, trances and local myths, it would definitely be leaving the non-believers with answers to questions they have been asking for a long time.

Like it or not, the recent music scene has been more colourful with Jessie J in it! She first fooled us into thinking that she was just another Scandinavian studio synthesizer-singer when she released ‘Do It Like A Dude’ back in 2010. Oh, by the way, we were wrong because she is actually English, LOL! Then, she took the world by storm with ‘Price Tag’ featuring rapper B.o.B and we all started Googling ‘Jessie J’. And the rest, as they say, is history… yup, figuratively and literally in your History files on your computers and smartphones.

Q: Describe your music.

JJ: My music is very eclectic because it is based on my emotions and my emotions change a lot as a woman. We can sometimes be happy and sometimes be sad and frustrated and reflective. So all my songs I think are very eclectic, very honest and very to the point.

Q: Talk about your album ‘Sweet Talker’.

JJ: The first feature that we did was myself, Ariana and Nicki Minaj which proved to be one of the most amazing moment of my career. “Bang Bang” has 050 SWITCH ON

been incredible. It has given me so many opportunities to perform around the world. The girls are amazing, as it’s like being in a girl band. The album also features De La Soul, Lindsey Stirling, Tinie Tempah, 2 Chainz. All completely different, which I wanted but all reflecting different sides of my personality and music that I’ve grown and listened to.

Q: What is important in your life when it comes to your musical career?

JJ: The live music is the core of my life. It’s the thing I’ve discovered I could do when

I was 8-9 year old that made me feel like I had a value, and a purpose and a reason to push through the emotional times of been young. But now, it’s kind of for me, it’s more than that. It’s proving to myself that I can do it. And also, keeping good live music alive is a very hard thing to do in this industry now, so I pride myself on performing live and hopefully been as good as my album recorded.

Q: What do you do before every concert?

JJ: Before I go on stage, I always brush my

I suppose I always just take 5 minutes to myself if there’s time, just to remember the people out there are ready for me and they are here to support me.

Q: Describe one of your sweetest moments performing?

JJ: I think one of my favourite gigs I’ve ever done was “Rock in Rio” in Lisbon.

I remember stepping out on stage and just being overwhelmed with the amount of people that there was. It was like you couldn’t see a gap. It was just thousands, like hundred and thousands of people.

They sang every word and every time I was like “put your hands up”, everyone’s hands went up. And the wind was going, the stage was huge. It was the first time we were performing new songs from “Sweet Talker”. It was last June. I just felt very powerful and I just felt the love.

Q: Any other favourite place performing?

JJ: You know what? I don’t have favourite places because it can be the most obscure place that gives you the most amount of love. I really don’t have anywhere in particular. I love performing, so everywhere feels lucky.

I don’t ever see a show bigger than the next. Although there is ten people or an hundred thousand people, I’ll always give everything I have because everyone has the same amount of heart and brain and love that they can have for you. So it should be mutual wherever you are.

Churros from friedchillies.com Recently churros has become so popular amongst KLites. Go to any food bazaar and one of the longest lines will be at the churros kiosk. Here’s a great little recipe for you to make it at home. And don’t worry if you don’t have chocolate sauce. Just dip in nutella or peanut butter!

Ingredients: 1 Cup water / 1 tsp sugar / 1 Cup all purpose flour / 1/4 Cup butter / 4 Eggs / Salt to taste / Sugar / Cinnamon Method: 1. Put butter, water and sugar in a pot on medium heat.

2. After the sugar has dissolved add in all-purpose flour and a pinch of salt (if desired) and stir vigourously with a wooden spoon.

3. Let it cool for 5 - 10 minutes before stirring in the eggs, one at a time. Your dough should be smooth and comes away from the side of the pan and form a ball.

4. Put a nozzle in a plastic bag, insert dough and squeeze out strands of it into hot oil. Snip off with scissors once you have the length you want. We like them about 3 inches long (easier to eat!)

5. Once golden brown lift out and then scattersugar and cinnamon on top or eat it with some thick hot chocolate.

This is usual practice, so discuss with your ID

and contractor. Once you are happy with their job and the function of your newly renovated apartment, and then proceed to make full payment.

Moving in: If you’re buying new furniture have all your furniture delivered to your home before moving in. Make sure to label all your boxes so it’s easier to unpack your items. Get help! You can’t do everything on your own, so make sure to let the movers know that you need help in moving your items, some movers even offer packing and unpacking services.

When you are planning your reports, how do you choose which angle to concentrate on?

The program I host and report for is 101 East, Al Jazeera’s premier news and current affairs show. Our mandate is to boldly cover the untold stories in Asia. And that ultimately is what news should be about – providing something “new”

for our viewers. That means, typically, when we look at a story, we look at what angles have yet to be covered, what more can we say about an issue that has yet to be explored.

Oftentimes it’s the public itself that lets us know what they’d like to hear about. And increasingly in this age of social media, people are increasingly reaching out, and telling us directly what angle or direction in a story we should concentrate on. And, we’re listening.

Out of all the stories you’ve covered, which is your proudest effort?

That’s almost like asking a parent which child is your favourite! It’s a hard one to answer. Almost every story I’ve covered IS like a precious child to me. You give birth to it, you painfully raise it, and then you set it free. You’re aware of all their shortcomings, but also proud to some extent of every one… I think I’ll leave it there.
