Candy's memories of Margaret came flooding back when she saw her mother again this summer, but only in a photograph taken 12 years ago by The Link magazine. It was on display as part of the West Swindon library's tenth anniversary celebrations in July. We've provided Candy with copies, and now she wants readers to help her find Margaret. At first Candy always thought she would see her mother again until family members said she had died. After three years she asked a social worker to investigate the register of deaths in England and Wales. Margaret's name does not appear on it and Candy is now convinced her mother must be alive - somewhere. "I was really shocked when I was told my mother's name was not registered dead," she said. I always had a feeling that she couldn't be; no officials like the police or a vicar visited the house and nobody would tell me where she was buried or anything. I cried and cried when I was told my mum was dead. People who were in my class at Freshbrook School will probably remember. "My mother could have visited us after she left home, but perhaps she didn't have the bus fare; maybe she couldn't take the pain of seeing us again." Candy is now more determined than ever to find Margaret and is appealing to anybody who knew the Sheppard family when they lived in Freshbrook to reveal any secret information they might be keeping. She could still have her married name, or she may be using her maiden name Brind. Or she may be remarried.

"1 can't imagine what it will be like to see her again. I always felt close to my mum and I really need to find her to satisfy the confusion in me. I want her love and understanding. I want to know her again, and I want her to see what I'm like now. We've missed a lot together and I've got such a lot inside to say to her." Anybody who has information which will help Candy in her search is asked to contact us. Right: Margaret Sheppard in a Link magazine photo from 12 years ago
