2023 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT

SWIMMING WITH A MISSION, INC. (SWAM) IS A 501(C)(3) NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT SUPPORTS THE VETERAN COMMUNITY BY RAISING MONEY THROUGH UNIQUE FUNDRAISING EVENTS.
THE MONEY SWAM RAISES IS STRATEGICALLY GRANTED TO WORTHY VETERAN SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS BOTH LOCALLY TO SUPPORT ALL VETERANS AND NATIONALLY TO SUPPORT THE SPECIAL FORCES COMMUNITY.
SWAM HAS PROUDLY CONTRIBUTED OVER $9.9M TO SERVICE AND SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE CRITICAL SERVICES TO OUR VETERANS SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 2017.
IN ADDITION, SWAM WORKS HARD TO HELP COORDINATE THE MANY VETERAN SERVICE ORGANIZATION SO THAT THEY WORK TOGETHER TO PREVENT ANY VETERANS IN NEED FROM FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS.
SWAM IS ALSO PROUD TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR OUR COUNTRY AND THEIR GOLD STAR FAMILIES AT EACH OF OUR EVENTS AND THROUGH OUR HONOR WALL ON OUR WEBSITE.

SWIM WITH A MISSION’S
CO-FOUNDER’S NOTE
We started Swim With A Mission because we felt that we needed to do something! No Veteran should have to struggle to get help, but too many can’t find the services they need and deserve. Every person who ever served, and each member of their families has sacrificed something to keep the rest of us free. We live in the land of the free and the home of the brave, because of the brave! Our freedom is not free! We hope that you will join us on this mission to help, support and honor our Veterans.

Our original event in 2017 was a swim across beautiful Newfound Lake, the cleanest lake in the Northeast. We couldn’t believe how many people came out to support this effort. So over the following few years, we added new events, like Paintball With A Mission (a team building event led by the Navy SEALs), SWAM’s Navy SEAL Gold Star Family Tribute Dinner and Auction, Green Beret With A Mission Challenge and much more. We can’t wait for you to see what we have planned next! Please check out the rest of our website for more details.
As we continue to evolve and understand more about the needs of our Veterans, we are focusing more on mental health and reducing Veteran suicide. We are doing this by strategically funding recreational retreats that get Veterans together with other Veterans. We are funding equine immersion programs, art therapy and mental health counseling. We are also paying for as many service and support dogs for Veterans as we can. By doing all of that and then working to build bridges among all the Veteran service organizations in our community, less Veterans will fall through the cracks. So, annually we hold a summit where we get all of our local Veteran service organizations together in one room with the VA and other stakeholders to continue to encourage them to work closely together and address concerns facing Veterans in our community.
We are also focused on the importance of remembering and honoring those that have made the ultimate sacrifice and their Gold Star families. At all of our events and on our website, we honor the 96 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that we have lost in service in the War on Terror since 9/11. Never Forget! We also offer the opportunity for individuals and businesses to purchase our Never Forget plaques so they can also honor our fallen heroes.
We are so grateful that our first seven years have been such a great success and are especially appreciative of every donor, sponsor, swimmer, volunteer and participant who have helped make this mission victorious! We have an incredible Board, Advisory Board and group of dedicated volunteers that are working hard to make next year even better. We are grateful to our friends and family (especially to our children Benjamin and Dani) for joining our mission. Please join us to make a difference!

OUR IMPACT in 2023
In 2023, SWAM granted $1,580,000 to 18 Veteran service organizations, out of the 34 that applied. SWAM’s primary focus in 2023 was to address mental health issues and reduce suicide among our Veterans. To do this, SWAM focused on Veteran service organizations that bring Veterans out of isolation to be around other Veterans that can help them, like recreational retreats and equine immersion programs. SWAM also supported organizations that provide services that help Veterans on their journey of healing, like art therapy, service dogs and mental health counseling. SWAM also supported homelessness, food insecurity and unemployment among Veterans.

VETERANS & VSOs SHARE HOW SWAM SAVES LIVES

“I had no idea of the uphill battle that I was facing when I got out of the military. It took a long time and I still struggle day to day. I met Scott (Hyder) at probably my lowest point. I walked by and he said, ‘Hey, how’re you doing?’, and I said ‘Oh, I’m living the dream’. And then he literally stopped me and said, ‘No. How are you REALLY doing?’ and I pretty much lost it, right there. And he said, ‘Ok, we’re going to get you some help.’ And he got me over to The Travis Mills Foundation for their PATHH (Progressive Alternative Treatment for Healing Heroes) Program, and Scott pretty much saved my life by doing that.” - Scott Tobin, Veteran who worked with Hidden Battles
“The collab that Swim With A Mission has created allows us to meet 40+ organizations to help do the mission we need. And it’s not only about funding, it’s about connection - and that’s huge. Funding can come from anywhere but that connection is absolutely priceless. That’s what SWAM is, SWAM realistically is now a bigger family of all of these great nonprofits to come together to do the right thing for our Veterans.” - Scott Hyder, Founder for Hidden Battles
Swim With A Mission, Inc. was proud to grant $25,000 in 2023 to Hidden Battles for the work they do for our Veterans.
“So many of our Veterans before they come to us have tried everything - they’ve tried medication, they’ve tried therapy, they’ve tried ignoring it… they’ve tried medication, they’ve tried being angry about the fact that they are dealing with anxiety and symptoms of their brain injuries and PTSD.” - Charlotte Troddyn, Executive Director for Operation Delta Dog
“I went from soaking the sheets at least once a night with nightmares… I haven’t had a single nightmare since he’s come home to live with me. He jumps up on the bed and he’ll worm his way up on my side and just keep me “here”. While we may think the dogs not for me, someone else needs it more than I do- trust me, it’ll save your life and for the better- you are deserving.” - Paul Roy, Veteran with Operation Delta Dog
Swim With A Mission, Inc. was proud to grant $180,000 in 2023 to Operation Delta Dog for the work they do for our Veterans.

“They’re revealing to us that they were contemplating suicide or harming themselves that day but because they had such an impactful time with the horses, that it was no longer a thought in their mind.” - Ryan Casavant, COO EIP
“I’m riding up on this horse and it feels like I’m on top of the world. It was something I wouldn’t normally do or have the ability to do. That’s a feeling you can never get laying down on somebody’s couch or sitting around with a group of other people.” - Sean Welch, Veteran who worked with EIP
Swim With A Mission, Inc. was proud to grant $50,000 to EIP in 2023 for the work they do for our Veterans.

MOAA NH’S 2022 GRANITE STATE WARRIOR AWARD - FEBRUARY 18, 2023

On February 18, 2023, SWAM's Co-Founders Phil and Julie Taub were honored by the NH chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America (MOAA) as recipients of their annual Granite State Warrior Award, presented at the MOAA-NH luncheon at the Nashua Country Club. The New Hampshire Chapter of the MOAA established the Granite State Warriors Award (GSWA) in 2011 to annually recognize the superb contributions of a New Hampshire based organization and/or a New Hampshire resident that has: Improved the health, morale, welfare, and recognition of US military personnel and their direct families through the creation and delivery of unique services either in the US or where military forces are deployed. The Taub's are both honored to be the recipients of the MOAA-NH Granite State Warrior Award as they continue SWAM's mission to honor and support the Veteran and active military community.
ARMY WAR COLLEGE IN CARLISLE VISIT
Two of SWAM’s board members, Phil Taub and Jeff Hiatt, attended the 2023 National Security Seminar at the Army War College in Carlyle, PA. Both were nominated by NH’s senior military advisors to be civilian attendees at the War College. This Seminar is intended to have civilians who are committed to helping active and retired service members learn more from the faculty and students at the War College about the challenges facing our military and our country. Phil and Jeff were able to share the success of SWAM with their fellow attendees and learnt a lot about life in the military from the many US and foreign service members they met there. They also enjoyed a staff tour of the battlefields at Gettysburg.

EASTERSEALS MILITARY & VETERAN CAMPUS IN FRANKLIN, NH
Easterseals New Hampshire officially broke ground on its Military & Veterans Campus on September 21, 2023, a first-in-the-nation holistic facility that will offer an array of known, proven programs under one roof, and it's set to be nothing short of incredible! The story behind this endeavor is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision. It all began with a conversation between our Founder Philip Taub and Maureen Beauregard, the President of Easterseals NH. At the groundbreaking, Phil recounted how he only had 30 seconds to pitch his idea to Governor Chris Sununu, and the Governor's response was an immediate and resounding "Yes, we are going to do this." What followed was months of diligent research, discussions, and planning to bring this campus to life, with the state providing $23 million in support through the American Rescue Plan Act to Easter Seals.
The Military and Veterans Campus, spanning 15 acres, will provide 30 housing units, a dedicated therapeutic and recreation center, and facilities to accommodate the many Veteran Service Organizations (VSO's) that currently serve our military and Veteran community throughout the state. SWAM is proud to have played a small role in bringing this idea to fruition and supports Easterseals in all their efforts to construct and manage this campus. SWAM predicts that the Easterseals’ campus will become the heart of the Veteran community.

It was an extraordinary gathering where political differences were put aside, uniting in a singular, vital cause: addressing and solving issues facing our Veterans.

GREEN BERET WITH A MISSION CHALLENGE

On June 24, 2023, SWAM partnered with Camp Resilience for another year of the Green Beret With A Mission Challenge, a team building fitness challenge led by U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret Soldiers. Despite the rain pouring down, our brave teams refused to let it dampen their spirits as they fearlessly got dirty and rolled in the mud to show their unwavering support for our Veterans! A huge shoutout to Camp Resilience and all the Green Berets for making this year's event another tremendous success. NAVY SEAL GOLD STAR FAMILY TRIBUTE DINNER

emotional and
at Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH. With 267 in attendance, the unforgettable evening honored Navy SEAL Gold Star Families whose loved one made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
There wasn't a dry eye in the building as we paid tribute to three fallen SEALs from New Hampshire: William "Blake" Marston, Nate Hardy, and Dan Healy, along with Glen Doherty, who heroically defended the U.S. Diplomatic Mission and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Their courage and dedication continue to inspire us, and their memory lives on in the hearts of all who were touched by their service.
We were deeply honored to have Jessica Buchanan, an extraordinary individual - teacher, author, humanitarian, speaker and survivor, as our esteemed guest speaker that evening. Her speech served as a powerful reminder that the precious gift of freedom we enjoy today comes at a tremendous cost, a cost borne by the courageous service members who selflessly sacrifice so much to protect and uphold our liberties.

With SEALs and their families by our side, as well as the presence of some of the Navy SEAL Gold Star families, the evening was filled with remembrance and gratitude. Raising more than $400,000, this tribute capped the fundraising weekend’s efforts to just over $1.5 million dollars.

AIRSHOW AT PEASE
AIRSHOW AT PEASE - SEPT 9 AND 10, 2023

SWAM was proud to host a space at the Thunder Over New Hampshire Air Show on September 9th and 10th for NH Veteran service organizations (VSOs) to tell those in attendance about the work they do to support our Veterans. This intentional effort to provide opportunities for Veterans to organically learn about the VSO’s and support they offer is one of SWAM’s initiatives to build connection and ensure no Veteran falls through the cracks as we all work together to reduce Veteran suicide.

In the SWAM tent, we paid tribute to the memory of our 95 service members from New Hampshire who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Global War on Terror. Our dedicated space hosted an Honor Wall where visitors embarked on a meaningful journey, paying their respects and crafting personal messages to honor these heroes.

WOOD ISLAND - 9/11

In commemoration of the lives lost on September 11th, and in honor of New Hampshire's 95 valiant service members who made the ultimate sacrifice post-9/11, SWAM was privileged to host a small tribute event on Wood Island on 9/11/24. Set against the iconic backdrop of Wood Island, the afternoon began with a spectacular Navy SEAL parachute descent, followed by a reading of the names of the fallen NH service members by Navy SEALs as a beacon of courage, sacrifice, and unity. A truly special commemoration for all who attended.

SWAM was grateful to bring together more than 40 Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) for the 3rd Annual NH VSO Summit held on June 4, 2023 at Fisher Cat Stadium, in Manchester, NH. This initiative to close the gap between the needs of Veterans and the broad patchwork of Veteran-focused service programs and non-profit services created solution-oriented conversations around the current epidemic of Veteran suicide. SWAM’s goal was to leverage the summit to help the many community groups who are supporting Veterans to connect, understand what each organization does, and build relationships so that no Veteran falls through the cracks in our work to reduce the Veteran suicide rate in NH.
Joined by Governor Chris Sununu, Co-Founders Phil and Julie Taub opened the summit with the direction SWAM is headed, followed by a Q&A, and updates from the Director of the VA Medical Center, Kevin Forrest, and Deputy Adjutant General at the State of New Hampshire’s Department of Military Affairs, Warren Perry. The group received an update from Easterseals’ NH President and CEO, Maureen Beauregard regarding the new Military and Veteran Campus being constructed in Franklin, NH. The group spent the afternoon in workshops led by SWAM Board Members around reducing Veteran suicide and fundraising best practices. After the summit, the group participated in the Fisher Cat’s Military Appreciation Night.
