SwimCount and Fertility Treatment •

The earlier the couple identifies an infertility problem, the earlier they can start a potential fertility treatment, and the chances of obtaining pregnancy increase.

SwimCount is a pre-screening test for sperm quality, and thereby the first step for couples worrying about their fertility status. SwimCount provides the necessary information about sperm quality the couple needs i.e. the number of progressive motile sperm cells in the semen sample.

Fertility is directly related to age, especially for women. The longer the couple waits, the more difficult it will be to become pregnant. Therefore, the sooner the couple identifies a fertility problem, the more efficient a potential fertility treatment will be.

The time, emotional stress and costs will be reduced for the couple.

SwimCount compared with standard semen analysis Multicenter Clinical Trials SwimCount is a semi-quantitative CE-marked home test for male fertility. Male fertility is determined by measuring the concentration of progressive motile sperm cells as either above or below 5 million progressive motile spermatozoa according to WHO (5th ed., 2010).

The purpose of the Multicenter Clinical Trials, conducted by Fertility Clinic Ciconia (Denmark), Nordic Cryobank/European Sperm Bank (Denmark) and Fertility Clinic IVI Valencia (Spain), was to compare the test result (read out) obtained by a SwimCount home sperm quality test to standard semen analysis using the WHO criteria (5th ed., 2010) on a total of 253 semen samples obtained from men seeking fertility treatment or semen donors.

Swim-Up Technology The technology behind the SwimCount test is based on the same principle as the well-known Swim-Up Technology which, for many years, has been used in Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) to harvest the best sperm cells for Intra Uterine Insemination (IUI).

The SwimCount Swim-Up Technology 1. After the liquefaction of the produced semen sample (30 minutes), 0.5 ml of the semen sample is added to the semen compartment 2. By pushing the slider forward, the device is activated and only the progressive motile sperm cells swim up into the progressive motile sperm cells chamber 3. After 30 minutes and pulling the slider all the way back, the progressive motile sperm cells have been stained and drawn into the result window. The darker the color, the more progressive motile sperm cells are present in the semen sample
