The problem with many current approaches, though, is that most organizations at that point were stove-piped. Some organizations were developing their own blockchains and applications to run on top of them. In any one industry sector, many different chains are therefore being developed by many different organizations to many different standards. This defeats the purpose of distributed ledgers, fails to harness network effects and can be less efficient than current approaches

What were the constraints you faced while starting with the company?

The lack of knowledge about blockchain, the confusion with bitcoin, lack of validation and an absence of well-defined use cases were a challenge to start with. All these coupled with a lack of blockchain talent were issues we faced when we set about putting our think tank together.

The principal challenge associated with blockchain was a lack of awareness of the technology, especially in sectors other than banking, and a widespread lack of understanding of how it works.

Further,

regulations have always struggled to keep up with advances in technology. Indeed, some technologies like the Bitcoin blockchain bypass regulation completely to tackle inefficiencies in conventional intermediated payment networks. One of the other challenges of the blockchain approach, which was also one of its original motivations, is that it reduces oversight.

Finally, while cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin offer pseudonymity, many potential applications of the blockchain require smart transactions and contracts to be indisputably linked to known identities, therefore raise important questions about privacy and the security of the data stored and accessible on the shared ledger.

Mapping such varied and sometimes even conflicting regimes onto global distributed ledger implementations poses obvious difficulties, particularly where logical relationships between nodes bear no necessary connection to the physical jurisdictions in which they are located.

However, this is not a new issue for global networks — the question of which law or laws apply to distributed digital activity has been a central concern for the application of laws online for the last 20 years, if not longer.

Notwithstanding its tremendous capabilities, in order for the technology to unfold its full potential there needs to be careful consideration as to how the technology can comply with new European privacy legislation, namely the General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”) which came into force on 25 May 2018. lockchain isn't a household buzzword, like the cloud or the Internet of Things. It's not an in-your-face innovation you can see and touch as easily as a smartphone or a package from Amazon. But in a world where anyone can edit a Wikipedia entry, blockchain is the answer to a question we've been asking since the dawn of the internet age: How can we collectively trust what happens online?

Every year we run more of our lives—more core functions of our governments, economies, and societies—on the internet. We do our banking online. We shop online. We log into apps and services that make up our digital selves and send information back and forth. Think of blockchain as a historical fabric underneath recording everything

that happens—every digital transaction; exchange of value, goods and services; or private data— exactly as it occurs. Then the chain stitches that data into encrypted blocks that can never be modified and scatters the pieces across a worldwide network of distributed computers or "nodes."

Think about a blockchain as a distributed database that maintains a shared list of records. These records are called blocks, and each encrypted block of code contains the history of every block that came before it with timestamped transaction data down to the second. In effect, you know, chaining those blocks together. Hence blockchain.

A blockchain is made up of two primary components: a decentralized network facilitating and verifying transactions, and the immutable

ledger that network maintains. Everyone in the network can see this shared transaction ledger, but there is no single point of failure from which records or digital assets can be hacked or corrupted.

Because of that decentralized trust, there's also no one organization controlling that data, be it a big bank or a tech giant like Facebook or Google.

No third-parties serving as the gatekeepers of the internet. The power of blockchain's distributed ledger technology has applications across every kind of digital record and transaction, and we're already beginning to see major industries leaning into the shift.

First up are the big banks and tech giants. Big business will always drive innovation, and the rise of blockchain-based smart contracts (read on for a deeper explanation) turns blockchain into a middleman to execute all manner of complex business deals, legal agreements, and automated exchanges of data. Let’s crowdfund a Torcoin – users of relays will pay in Torcoins and operators of relays will get paid in TorCoins. Founding developers collect equity when TorCoins are first mined and sold.

Non-founding developers and network operators are paid revenues from newly mined coins and transaction fees.

Can we just use Bitcoin instead of Torcoin? Isn’t money supposed to be fungible to all use cases? Perhaps not – Bitcoin’s transaction speed is too slow for a dynamic network allocating bandwidth – 10 to 60 minutes is far too long to negotiate with a relay. And payments have to be anonymous. So a fast-clearing (Fastcoin can clear a block in 12 seconds), fully anonymous (likeZerocoin) variant is needed.

What else can we allocate in a network? NameCoin is already working on Distributed DNS. Can we build a striped, encrypted, high-availability data store using Boxcoin which pays for disk availability? Can we build a caching infrastructure using Cachecoin which pays edge nodes with un-used resources to cache large, static content? A DDoScoin used by web servers to throttle incoming browser requests? A PKIcoin that provides a global, un-assailable encrypted and anonymous messaging network? Are there more applications, like Bitcoin, that map to the real world and bypass network resources altogether?
