Tell us something about your company.

Vision MassageLuXe is a nationwide spa franchise with 70 locations that offer high-quality massages, facials, and waxing services. Licensed massage therapists and estheticians help clients find relief for chronic pain and skin conditions in a relaxing environment.

MassageLuXe promotes health and wellness for the body and mind through massage and skin health treatments. MassageLuXe believes in the strength and power of massage therapy and treating your skin properly. Massage therapy can relieve stress and anxiety, which improves your mental health and wellbeing. Additionally, therapeutic massage provides pain management and relief for people suffering from numerous ailments and chronic conditions.

Therapeutic massage and skin health treatments aren’t just a luxury — they are methods of self-care that lead to better health, pain management, and overall improvements to your wellbeing.

Mission We are on a path of explosive growth and aim to have 250 locations open in the next 5 years. MassageLuXe is a fantastic investment opportunity and I want to help as many prospective MassageLuXe owners as possible reach their dreams through franchising with us. The more MassageLuXe locations we have, the more people we can help in reaching their health and wellness goals. With more locations, our message of the physical and mental health benefits of skincare and massage gets louder.

As Chief Growth Officer I have two primary objectives. The first is to make sure that our franchisees have all the tools and support to be successful in the marketing of their business. The second is to grow the franchise to 250 units over the next five years. My day-to-day is centred around those objectives. At MassageLuXe we are a tight-knit team that works well together cross-departmentally.

Most of my days are spent problem-solving, building strategies, and coaching franchisees or prospective franchisees. I am the type of leader who rolls up her sleeves and dives in.

What or who has been your greatest

influence in business and why?

The franchisees over my career are my greatest influence in business. I have had a few moments in my career that I would categorize as inflexion points.

Most of them come directly from franchisees. When you get a window into their world, it changes you for the better. Franchising is not easy. You win and lose with your franchisees. When you are both losing, it forces challenging conversations that keep you up at night. It is those conversations and moments that drive my commitment and passion for doing everything I can to assist them in their pursuit of success. It’s the people who have trusted us with their savings and their future that influence my decisions and direction.

As I think about the earlier days of my career I wish I knew that it was okay to not have all of the answers.

I used to hear the word “strategy” and think it was this untapped piece of code that I had not yet been gifted. The reality is that a strategy is a plan. Some plans succeed, and others fail. You increase your chances of succeeding with data and informed insight, but it may not work and that is okay. The only true failure is not trying or speaking up in the first place.

What qualities makes you stand different from others who are already in this field?

The only person I compare myself to is the person that I was yesterday. I am extremely competitive, but with myself. I take what I do extremely seriously. I want to wake up every day better than the day before.

What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?

To my franchise friends: My advice to aspiring businesswomen is to wake up every day with an appreciation and understanding of what your franchisees have done. They invested in the work that you are doing and are trusting you to build something they can flourish in. Take the time to get to know them and to build relationships with them.

In doing so, you will start to approach your work and the decisions at hand differently.

To anyone in business: Identify the purpose behind what you are doing and stay strong and decisive to fulfil that purpose. Believe in your instinct, pull your shoulders back, and never shy away from the challenge that sits in front of you.

What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?

I haven’t achieved my greatest professional accomplishment – but I will let you know when I

do 😊. In late 2020 I was named one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Franchising by Business Woman Magazine. The annual list honours 100 leading women in international franchising. I am so honoured to be listed alongside these leaders.

While that recognition was a proud moment, the proudest come when my franchisees are winning and seeing success. There’s nothing better than helping someone achieve their dreams of business ownership.

How would you handle inappropriate guest behaviour?

Our locations are individually owned and operated, so we coach our franchisees on how to handle inappropriate guest behaviour. My guests (or customers) are the franchisees. It’s my job to serve them and to lead them to success. In business, emotions run high and it’s important to remember that it’s okay to pause and collect those emotions before picking up the conversations.

What security measures do you take into consideration while you do your “Wake up loving what you do, or work? find something else to do.”

As a brand with many individually owned and operated locations, some things are out of our control. We work extremely hard to ensure consistency, safety and security throughout our company.

How do you keep your employees motivated? Tell me about your approach to leading a diverse team.

I am all about relationships. The relationships that I have with my team, co-workers, partners, and franchisees are crucially important because those relationships are the building blocks to success.

Without relationships, you cannot have trust. Without trust, you can’t motivate or coach.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

I want MassageLuXe to be a household name that is recognized as a leader in the health and wellness industry. This brand has the foundation to scale and flourish. I am so proud of what the team has built, and I am so thankful to be part of the journey.

The franchising industry is second to none. The entrepreneurs, trailblazers and thought leaders who advocate on behalf of the future of franchising are setting the stage for thousands of people to fulfil their dreams. This industry is a vital part of our economy and we need to do everything we can to embrace and grow it.

Background and your philosophy I have had a wonderful career, working across Canada and internationally. I spent over nine years at General Electric, learning the ropes, and eventually became Chief Commercial Officer and then CEO of GE’s Small Industrial Motors Division. I was part of the executive team to sell our Small Industrial Motors Division to one of China’s largest motor manufacturers, Wolong Electric. We did that in 2018, and Wolong asked me to stay on as CEO of their newly formed global business unit GE Industrial Motors division (a Wolong company).

As a CEO, it’s important to have a vision but it’s equally important to have an innovative and experienced team that delivers on the vision. Exro is changing the way the world looks at energy consumption. We are creating 20

our footprint in the power electronics market as we accelerate a new way of optimizing powertrains.

Why you have chosen it as a career I grew up working at my parents’ industrial motor repair shop, so, motors are part of my DNA. I went on to build my career in the industry working for some of the top motor manufacturers in the world.

Our IBMS technology applies the principle of managing “energy” as it converts at the individual level to batteries. Essentially, we can optimize many individual cells within a battery to make the entire battery as a whole – perform better and have an extended life. It’s very exciting technology, still under development, but it has great commercial applications.

Our most recent one is with SEA Electric, an Australian company. They are expanding globally and have a NA head office in LA. They are one of the global leaders in the electrification of commercial fleet and municipal vehicles.

SEA Electric and Exro are co-developing and testing powertrains based on Exro’s Coil Driver and the SEADrive technologies, which are exceptional.

SEA Electric was founded in 2012, and they have

successfully commercialized their SEA-Drive® electric power-system technology in 5 countries, with collectively more than 1.6 million kms (approximately 1 million miles) of independently OEM tested and inservice operation.

Another company that we are working with is Zero Motorcycles.

They are working with us to utilize patented Coil Driver technology in Zero’s SR/S powertrain platform. This is exciting because Zero Motorcycles is a leading developer of electricpowered motorcycles, which is a rapidly growing market.

Sue Ozdemir, CEO Sue is a distinguished sales executive with over 20 years of expertise in industrial equipment sales. She joined Exro Technologies Inc. in 2019. Prior to Exro, she was the CEO of GE Industrial Motors a Wolong company.

She has serveda long stint at GE, where her last role was CEO/CCO of GE Small Industrial Motors.

Upcoming goals Exro is entering multiple multibillion dollar markets, where there is an enormous demand for technologies that help the world move towards greater use of electric motors and their associated systems.

Since Exro’s technology improves performance and reduces energy consumption in powertrains, we are obviously attractive to those sectors as a technology that will put more dollars on the bottom line. But there is also our environmental benefits to consider. Many electric motors are powered by energy sources that create GHGs. The beginning

I worked at firms doing IR/PR/Marketing for many years and what I saw shocked me. There were big global firms with hundreds of employees and were all broken down into “groups.” Clients were led to believe that there was a “group” of people working for them – when the reality was, it was only myself. Indeed, we had Administrative people, Assistant Account Executives, Account Executives, Managers, Directors, etc. all in the group – but none of them had any idea whatsoever on what I was working on. It was a lot of work for me, being alone and working on 8-10 clients at a time.

I was working 18 hour days – 7 days a week, while the higher people reaped all of the benefits (financially).

Overcome This situation followed me to several firms, and one firm put a price tag on everything. I was used to charging clients a monthly retainer for all of the work – not charging a monthly retainer plus additional fees for various work projects. I truly felt clients were being taken advantage of and decided to put an end to it. I knew the business extremely well.

Here, I was able to continue the same quality work that I had been providing my clients for decades – all while charging them a reasonable monthly retainer. They were delighted with the results, and I was happy knowing that the same work continued. I was able to prove myself above any reasonable doubt, and that due to me taking a stance – my clients all continued to pay minimum retainers. At the same time, I went above and beyond to prove myself to them and the world.

Challenges did the company face Sadly, in this competing world, we did encounter several mishaps along the way. Once, we had another Agency who tried to sue us, stating that we offered the same “type” of service. The case was eventually thrown out – but it was still an eye-opener on how evil the world can be. We also had one company take over 5 of the companies that we were representing and taking that business in-house, so that was a quick 5-client loss right at the onset, which was a massive crush to us.

How did we overcome it? We continued our work with our other clients, building relationships, building MAY 2021

our databases, learning new ways to market our clients to investors, analysts, brokers, media, and how best to position them as leaders in their industry. The Bitcoin mining industry revenue is at a high, which is partly due to the recent appreciation of Bitcoin’s value.

Along with that increase in value comes a huge demand for itcoin mining hardware, and the demands significantly outweigh the supply. This creates lengthy lead times – sometimes close to one year - for large equipment orders, and it means new equipment is being sold at a huge premium.

Hut 8’s proactive fleet management strategy is based on a consistent equipment refreshment cycle, meaning 25 percent of the hardware is always being updated. This allows us to avoid huge capital expenditure balloons resulting from purchasing new equipment in a bull market and saving on electricity costs because we can do more, faster, with less.

Mining crypto—especially Bitcoin—is an electricityintensive process. Indeed, it’s so intensive that crypto is now starting to feel the heat from ecologists. They argue that mining is beginning to have an incredibly negative impact on the environment. How sustainable is your solution for mining?

Sustainability is a major priority for myself and the Hut 8 leadership team.

We are actively exploring solutions to improve energy efficiency and reduce Hut 8’s environmental footprint.

Bitcoin mining relies on computers, and the reality is those computer networks require significant electricity.

Ensuring our fleet is armed with cutting-edge equipment is one way to improve efficiency and decrease electricity use. We’re also fortunate to have Hut 8 mining operations in Alberta - a favorable location where we have strong government relationships, cold weather and can use a mix of natural gas and wind power instead of coal to power our network.

The crypto world is awash with scams, some of which affect the mining industry. How do you protect the interest of your customers in such cases?

User experience isn’t a big part of Hut 8 because our services aim to remove user experience from the process of gaining exposure to Bitcoin.

We offer investors direct exposure, without the technical complexity or constraints of purchasing the underlying cryptocurrency, and a way to avoid the need to create online wallets, wire money offshore, and safely store their bitcoin.
