hildren of today are set to become adult citizens of tomorrow. Growth is parallel to the future of our country and is reflected in the quality of the current education system.

A school should spark curiosity in young, impressionable minds and equip them with the tools to become better people.

School is the most important source of knowledge to which children are exposed. It allows them to acquire knowledge in various fields of education such as humans, literature, history, mathematics, politics, and many more. When a person is exposed to influences from various cultural sources, his influence on the world and existence expands.

In an international school, students are trained with a global perspective and fed with a critical thinking approach rather than rote learning methods. Through early classroom techniques such as Montessori and hands-on labs, students embrace a self-inspired learning system. This is followed so that their learning does not end with school, but continues throughout life.

Middleton Grange School The History Middleton Grange School is considered a relatively new school as it was established in 1964. It draws however on much older ties.

The school was established on a Christchurch estate called Middleton.

The Middleton homestead was built in the mid 1800’s by one of the first settlers to the area, Thomas Rowley. In 1861 Sir Charles Bowen, who was a prominent and active member of politics and introduced the 1877 Education Act, took over the property. Through family connections, Bowen and his wife are said to have hosted the Antarctic explorers, Scott, Shackleton and Wilson prior to their journey to the Antarctic.

The school was developed by a group of prominent Christchurch businessmen, with Mr Don Laugesen at the helm, who saw the need for a Christian non-denominational school in Canterbury and was established as a private school. In 1996 the school applied to change to a state-integrated school, to enable more children to benefit from a Christian education. The school is owned by the Christian School’s Trust.

Middleton Grange School hosted its first international student in 1966. In 1984 the Government of New Zealand relaxed its regulations on international students studying in secondary schools and in 1985 a group of thirty-two students enrolled at the school. They came from Hong Kong, India, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Malaysia. This was the beginning of what has become a significant part of Middleton Grange School.

The International College of Middleton Grange School was established in 2001 when the New Zealand Government made the decision to put in place a Code of Practice for all institutions wishing to educate international students. With this Code of Practice, a more rigorous system for enrolling and caring for international students was required and the school Board and Principal recognized the importance of having a dedicated business plan and school to meet Code compliance.

This foresight has meant that the school has been able to weather all the storms in relation to international education, and it means that Middleton Grange School consistently stands out as a school of excellence in providing a high quality, academic education with strong faith-based nurturing support for all students.

The Mission Statement: At Middleton Grange School we are committed to a rigorous learning culture based on an understanding of truth as revealed in the whole counsel of Scripture. We equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand their heritage and their place in it; and to critique and engage contemporary society. We work with parents to encourage students in their gifts and abilities to serve God and others.

Middleton Grange School is called a composite school, which means it is from Year 1 (5 years of age), to Year 13 (18 years of age). The school is divided into Primary School (Yr 1 – 6), Middle School (Yr 7 – 10) and Senior College (Yr 11 – 13). The International College runs parallel to all areas of the school with international students fully integrated into the school.

The Governance of the school is administered by an elected Board and the day-to-day Management is overseen by the Principal, Mr Michael Vannoort. To assist in the management, a Senior Leadership Team oversee various portfolios. The Senior Leadership Team is made up of two Assistant Principals, Heads of Schools – Primary, Middle, Senior and International, and an Associate Principal.

Each year level has either one or two academic and pastoral Deans, with Heads of Faculties or Curriculum Leaders, in charge of specific curriculum areas. This system of school management and leaderships allows the school to monitor, care for and provide support to all learners at the school.

Middleton Grange School has a reputation for academic excellence. Our staff are highly skilled professionals who help our students to achieve consistently impressive results. Staff are required to be committed Christians and therefore students are educated in an environment where we strive for Character, Excellence and Service, for the Glory of God. The International College staff is responsible for every aspect of the student’s life and study while in

Christchurch. We go above and beyond in the care and support of our students.

Students are required to either live with a parent or in a homestay and the International College has rigorous systems to recruit and monitor homestays. First and foremost is the wellbeing of our students.

Cultural Diversity Middleton Grange School has always been a school with a diverse range of cultures and ethnicities. Right from the beginning the school had children from Dutch, German, British heritage, and more. With international students first arriving at the school in the 1960’s it has meant that different cultures have always been provided for.

Currently we would have more than 60 ethnicities in the school. The International College caters for the international students, but we also have many domestic students who identify with the heritage of another country. We celebrate this diversity, as we are all created in the image of our Maker.

Policies for International Students Middleton Grange School adheres to the The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 (The Code). This is a government requirement for any institution in New Zealand wishing to host and educate international students. Our school has been Code Compliant since the inception of the first Code in the early 2000’s.
