newsbriefs Wonder Gardens Celebrates 80th Anniversary

wo events will mark the Everglades Wonder Gardens’ celebration of its 80th anniversary in Bonita Springs. Moonshine and Music will feature live music, light refreshments, animal encounters and other activities that recall the bootlegging history of the venue’s founders Bill and Lester Piper from 5 to 7 p.m., February 19. A celebration will follow the next two days that includes the reading of a proclamation by Bonita Springs Mayor Ben Nelson at 1 p.m. and an educational alligator feeding session at 2 p.m., both on February 20. Attendees can enjoy animal encounters from Bird Gardens of Naples, face painting, anniversary-themed coloring sheets, period games that were popular in 1936 when the Wonder Gardens was founded, a visit from their flamingo mascot and birthday cake served at noon on both days. The 3.5-acre botanical jungle features exhibits of tropical birds and reptiles, including a flamingo pond, alligator pool with 37 alligators, duck ponds, aviary, turtle and tortoise exhibits, butterfly garden, bromeliad garden, orchid trail and gift shop. Cost: $15 for members and $25 for nonmembers for Moonshine and Music tickets. $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for children for regular admission. Location: 2710 Old 41 Rd.
