POCKET PARK PAVILION:
An intervention to nurture the sense of place in high density cities 01
Singapore’s vision of becoming a “City in Nature” is reflected in its diverse green spaces, ranging from manicured parks to naturalistic pockets within urban landscapes. Amoy Street Pocket Park, situated at the confluence of Amoy Street, Boon Tat Street, and Telok Ayer Street in downtown Singapore, embodies this ethos. Flanked by heritage shophouses, a Taoist temple, and an Indian Muslim shrine, this site serves as a cultural and social connector. Despite its potential, the park is often treated as a thoroughfare for office workers or a shaded break during meal times.
This project proposes a pavilion within a 4m x 4m footprint, accommodating six people, designed to elevate the park’s experience. It aims to transform the space into a meaningful place for rest and interaction, integrating contextually with the park’s circulation, shade, and existing elements. Through careful observation of human behavior and site-specific nuances, the design emphasizes creating a harmonious architectural intervention that enhances both ecological and cultural connectivity.

SITE STUDY AND INTERVENTIONS
There is a growing need to revitalize underutilized pocket parks in dense urban settings, transforming them into vibrant spaces that foster interaction, recreation, and continuous activity. Positioned at the intersection of Amoy Street, Boon Tat Street, and Telok Ayer Street, the park holds immense potential due to its proximity to cultural landmarks like heritage shophouses, a Taoist temple, and an Indian Muslim shrine. A thoughtfully designed pavilion can enhance its utility, connect diverse users, and celebrate its cultural context, creating a dynamic community hub that remains active throughout the day.
Located near the Central Business District , the park are well-preserved, low-rise heritage shophouses along Telok Ayer Street. These buildings typically have 2-3 stories and exhibit traditional architectural styles, creating a human-scale environment along the street edges. The park is juxtaposed with mid-rise and high-rise office towers providing a vertical contrast to the intimate scale of the park and the shophouses. The park is used just as a shortcut to access the roads and has some seating areas for working professionals and tourists.
DESIGN RATIONALE
Exploring on creating a pavilion that draws attention to the users, while harmonizing with the surrounding and creating a sense of contrast and interest to the whole urban establishment, questioning the rigidity of forms by creating programs and fuctions through intersection of various forms and projections. A form that creates impact activating to connect existing users, while also redefining user patterns and activities, hence activating the purpose of such green pockets.
Typical circulation of users -connecting Telok Ayer and Amoy Street,Boon Tat access is majorly ignored as an access point.
Nodes are created at shaded spots and landmarks, users access the shaded seating areas under landscaping to take a short breaks, presence of installation draw users attentions
Shaded spots are created below existing trees at edges ,the access from Boon Tat has a centrally shaded zone
The Boon Tat has various viewpoints of the surrounding context with skylines and various structures and links that would create an impact visually
DESIGN EXPLORATION PROCESS
The juxtaposition of various linear and non linear forms ,abstaracted from the surrounding site context is developed to come up with a paradigm of 3 dimensionality while creating small spaces annd niches ,creating joineriors and openings. The curves are harmonized with respect to the verticcality of surroundings and spaces creating a connect with the various components of connection.
Layered heights and geometries invite interaction, while seating and shaded nooks offer contemplative spots to appreciate the contrast between organic greenery and the urban backdrop. More than functional, the pavilion fosters connection and engagement with Telok Ayer Green’s layered context.
MASTERPLAN
The pavilion is located in the accessway from BoonTat street, creating an impact in terms of functionality and aesthetics. It serves the both as a passage with a lot of elements interest while creating a difference in the volume of the path as well as a place of interest for the various users who would want to use it throughout the day.Overall the pavilion activates the unused areas of Telok Ayer green.

B.Arch Semester 8| Jan -May 2024
This research explores the impact of globalization on regional architecture, with a particular focus on the role of color in Chettinad houses. Ever since childhood, I have been fascinated by these vibrant, intricately patterned mansions of Tamil Nadu, which have served as a profound source of inspiration throughout my architectural journey. Amid climate change and cultural homogenization, the study highlights how Chettinad houses seamlessly blend traditional design principles with modern influences, maintaining sustainability and cultural continuity under various aspeccts of influence. As a part of this research I documented about six houses in the village of Kanadukathan,Chettinad,India. Key findings reveal how new materials, techniques, and aesthetic shifts have shaped this architectural style, emphasizing its resilience in global change.

An approach to airport design, harmonizing functionality, circulation, and contextual integration in Coimbatore 06
This thesis explores the design of an airport terminal as a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics, and planning principles, rooted in Coimbatore’s rich natural and cultural landscape. The proposal emphasizes efficient circulation, userfocused spaces, and contextual integration to enhance the traveler experience while promoting environmental sustainability.
Key aspects include optimizing passenger flow, vehicular access, and spatial organization, all while fostering a strong connection to the city’s identity. The design transcends the airport’s traditional role as a transportation hub, transforming it into a vibrant gateway that creates meaningful physical and functional impacts on the region.
Individual Project
Mentor:VijayAnand U,Sindhuja M
The expansion of Coimbatore International Airport is driven by the significant increase in passenger traffic and cargo operations, reflecting the region’s growing economic importance. Located in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore is a major industrial hub, particularly known for its textile, engineering, and IT sectors. The current airport infrastructure is insufficient to handle the projected growth in passenger numbers and freight volume. Being a developing alternative IT hub in the south, the city ought to offer a diversified establishment for better connectivity and easy wayfinding while reflecting into city’s cultural and sense of place.
The airport curbside design features a multi-level system, with departures on the upper level accessed via a dedicated flyover. Separate lane systems efficiently segregate autos, two-wheelers, taxis, and private vehicles, while a VIP access lane ensures seamless entry along the terminal’s side. This approach minimizes congestion, streamlines traffic flow, and enhances passenger convenience, addressing the critical need for efficient circulation in busy airport environments.Dedicated pick up zones for taxis and hired services are segregated to the basement level,a seperate bus pickup/drop off point is also allotted in the arrival level.

WHERE TO PEE ?
THE TALK. THE REMORSE.
Where to pee?
Breaking down a society, a dysfunctional one, is to turn the tunnel to listen a little closer to the demanding mouths. To respect what the walking and the talking express to graph a degree of spatial need. Why building museums pukes patriotism to wake up to a system crying over its lost purpose. Hiding the urge to question the ties that deny to clean that cubicle you couldn’t use on your period in a bus station. Focusing on the gut of challenges that still pose public hazards now screams louder over the glorious smirks of statues . To realise that a full bladder self questions the tax that goes into thin air. Calls for a practise to juxtapose urban sanitation and sanctity. The dirt of communal facilities and its resist to change runs on a treadmill. Sorting a governance roots to explicitly bind the A’s a facility speaks – allocations, a ordances and ambitions. Where the unspoken ‘restroom revolution’ dodges the common, pierces to open a stage to the revelations of a tailor-made ailment. ” A society can have anything it cares enough about and is willing to pay for.”, Alexander Kira , The Bathroom.
