4 REASONS TO VISIT MONACO IN MAY
The playground of the rich and famous might just be the ultimate holiday destination. Whether you’re looking for high-octane motorsport excitement or somewhere to unwind away from the chaos of everyday life, this exotic paradise on the French Riviera has something for everyone. Here are five reasons why you need to book a last-minute trip to Monaco today!
1/ The Monaco Grand Prix
(23rd –26th May) If roaring engines and high-speed antics are your thing, then your trip to Monaco is long overdue! This is one of the most important events on the Grand Prix race calendar, with an incredible street circuit and rich heritage that means you’ll discover motorsport treasures long after the racing has finished. Few other motorsport events can match the glitz and glamour of this one, and no other track is quite as dramatic or eye-catching as this, with landmarks such as Casino Square and the Swimming Pool section helping to separate amazing drivers from the rest of the pack.
2/ It’s a hiker’s dream!
Temperatures in May rarely reach over 19°c, but the weather tends to be dry and breezy, making it the perfect weather for hiking through this beautiful country. There are lots of easily accessible hiking routes, taking you along the coast if seascenes excite you, or through the mountains if you want to put your stamina to the test. Trails are well-marked and maintained, helping you to find your way and walk with confidence. Despite the fair forecast, make sure to pack layers in case of a change in weather, plenty of snacks, a well-charged phone and a camera – you’ll want to capture this scenery!
8 LUXURY HOME & LIFESTYLE
3/ Fine dining at its best!
Think you know good food? Think again! Monaco hosts some of the richest and most discerning tourists in the world, so it knows how to serve up fancy dishes. Two of the most famous restaurants are Louis XV Restaurant and the Le Grill de L’Hotel de Paris, which both offer meals that will cost more than your flight and accommodation combined, but you’ll be talking about the experience forever! Be warned – these restaurants require booking far in advance, so make sure to call them now to make a reservation. If you don’t manage to get a table, there are lots of other wonderful options, including some more purse-friendly establishments.
4/ The quieter beaches
As the weather has not quite reached its peak in May, you might not fancy a dip in the sea and sunbathing might be off the cards. However, the beach is still a gorgeous place to be at this time of year. Take a few layers if you still want to relax in the sunshine or enjoy the chance to stroll along the sands without worrying about tripping over buckets and spades or falling into holes dug by determined children. There are few parts of the world quite as spectacular as this coastline, so make the most of the lack of crowds while you can!
Monaco is stunning at any time of year, but May is one of the best times to visit. If opulence and extravagance is something that appeals to you, book that trip now and you’ll soon be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s richest.
TOP TIP
Book your itinerary as far in advance as possible to get the best hotels, restaurants and excursions, but even a lastminute getaway will unveil Mediterranean wonders that you won’t find anywhere else.

SPOT
A MARRIAGE MADE IN
Serenity
Serenity Garden is currently preparing to hold its first wedding this May. Despite being a brand-new wedding venue, it has welcomed lots of interest, with weddings booked throughout 2024 and most of 2025. There are a few dates left in between, but if you want one, you’d better be quick! So, what’s all the fuss about? Why are couples falling over themselves to get married in this remote part of Wales?
10 LUXURY HOME & LIFESTYLE

A tipi to remember
Serenity Garden’s USP is that is quite literally a garden. Betrothed couples can get married surrounded by lush green nature, with a large canvas tent creating an indoor-outdoor feel for the event. Of course, there’s plenty of space indoors if the good old Welsh weather gets out of control, but when the sun is shining, there is no better place to be.
Guests can wander through the woodlands, meeting the friendly animals that live on-site. Take photos with the alpacas and get the most incredible shots under the trees, under the arches of lights or along the walkway.
If you’re looking for a rustic, authentic vibe for your wedding, Serenity Garden is perfect. It’s a space that you have to see in person to truly appreciate. But beware, one visit and you may fall in love!
Your wedding, your way
The aim of the team behind Serenity Garden is to create a completely bespoke wedding day for you and your partner. They can advise on local caterers, florists and other suppliers to help make the day of your dreams, but ultimately, every single decision comes down to you and what you want. You can be as extravagant or as simple as you like.
The beauty of Serenity Garden is that it offers a blank canvas for you to add your personality. The lush green surroundings are the perfect backdrop to the tipi and whatever else you want for your big day.
What’s included?
Hire of the venue includes the tipi, where you’ll eat, drink and dance, an outdoor ceremony area where you’ll say your vows, plenty of outdoor space with haybales, firepits and lawn games. Serenity Gardens also has a wedding coordinator who will help you pull your big day together.
After that, what you see is what you’ll
get!
You’ll need to provide decoration, food, entertainment and anything else you feel you might need on the day. This is the best way to ensure that everything is uniquely you.
Let’s talk location
Tucked away in the southwest of Wales, Serenity Gardens is a little slice of heaven just minutes away from the beach. Its remote, rural location attracts couples from all over the UK, with upcoming weddings bringing people from Birmingham, Bristol, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Cardiganshire, London, and even further afield.
And who can blame them – when it comes to picture perfect wedding locations, few can compare. Of course, when you bring a whole wedding party to a remote area, they’ll all need somewhere to stay.
Set over seven acres of beautifully manicured land, Carys Davies and Rhys Lloyd have been offering holiday cottages here for some time already. When they realised they could make so much more of the space, they turned the unused land into an idyllic wedding location. The original cottages are still there, along with glamping pods, so there is space for up to 95 guests to stay. The venue is earmarked for one wedding a weekend, making for a more personal, special experience.
And if you do need more beds, speak to Carys, as she has lots of connections in the local area and can help find rooms nearby.
This stunning venue brings ethereal, festival vibes to your big day, with a more relaxed, customisable approach that is very different to what you’ll find in a hotel or traditional wedding venue. It’s this laid-back, stylish aesthetic that is so appealing to soon-to-be married couples. A quick tour around the venue and you just know you’re going to have the best day of your life.

ASCOT UPS THE FASHION STAKES AGAIN
It’s one of the biggest fashion events of the year, but it’s a horse racing event.
As we watch the horses of Royal Ascot race to the finish line, we are also checking out what everyone is wearing!
This unique event was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth II, who never faltered when it came to the dress code and loved a flutter on her favourite horses. And the association with the
royal family goes back much further than that. The racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and Royal week was established in 1911.
When you’re in the presence of royalty, you need to look your best. The dress code has always been strict, but this year, for the first time, Ascot have teamed up with a Creative Director to design the 2024 Lookbook, so we all know exactly what to wear.
TURN TO PAGE 22 TO READ ON
ASCOT UPS THE FASHION STAKES AGAIN
Style inspiration
Daniel Fletcher is a London-based designer who has worked with some of the biggest fashion houses in the world. His own label focuses on casual luxury, but he has created two outfits especially for Royal Ascot that give a discrete nod to genderfluid dressing, whilst staying in the confines of that all-important dress code.
The beautiful white dresses are buttoned-up down the front, with a shirt collar and tie setting off the look. The style of each dress is slightly different, but both fall below the knee and cover the shoulders.
Working with legendary makeup artist Andrew Gallimore, hair stylist Hiroshi Matsushita, and celebrated photographer James Robjant on the Lookbook, Daniel has created five edits to suit race-goer’s different styles. His dresses take pride of place in the Best of British edit, alongside outfits from Emilia Wickstead and Huntsman.
The New Guard edit looks at up-and-coming designers such as WED Studios, Chopova Lowena and Stefan Cooke, while the Conscious edit is all about looking your best with minimal harm to the planet, featuring designers such as Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.
The Luxury edit is for those who appreciate the finer things in life, with inspiration coming from Marc Jacobs and Missoni. Finally, the Tailoring edit is all about sharp lines, top hats and bow ties. It includes looks from Saville Row, Moss and LK Bennett.
All the edits adhere to the strict dress codes of the four viewer enclosures. Daniel was keen to put his own stamp on each look, saying: “This season, I wanted to bring a fresh take on fashion at the races and the magical world of occasion dressing. Inspiration came from my lifelong fascination with British heritage, and the stylish characters one might find at the racecourse this summer and beyond, whilst also paying homage to the array of styles able to be showcased across each enclosure, as well as my favourite Royal Ascot looks throughout the decades that I discovered during my
22 LUXURY HOME & LIFESTYLE

research delving through the pictorial archives. This includes my signature style of building an outfit based on neutrals and my love of tailoring, which I’ve then juxtaposed with more playful maximalist looks that highlight a sense of British sartorial elegance and the glamour of Royal Ascot.
“Be it flamboyant or understated, Royal Ascot gives us the chance to embrace the famous dress codes and dress up, encouraging freedom of expression through dressing. For 2024, I want to capture that joy and inspire racegoers to push the boundaries with their own unique style, and to embrace their own creativity.”
The rules of dressing for Ascot
Each of the four enclosures has its own dress code in place, with the Royal Enclosure being the most stringent in its requirements, insisting that ladies must wear a dress or jumpsuit that falls below the knee and shoulder straps must be more than an inch wide,
even if a jacket is worn. Trouser suits must match in material and colour and hats must be worn. Men can wear morning suits in black, grey or navy, including a waistcoat, necktie, top hat and socks that cover the ankle.
In the Queen Anne and Village enclosures, women are still expected to don headwear, although fascinators are accepted. Jumpsuits should still fall below the knee, but bare shoulders are allowed. Men can wear more casual three-piece suits but must still cover their ankles.
In the Windsor enclosure, anything goes! Although formal wear is still encouraged – this is a royal event after all!
Royal Ascot takes place from Tuesday 18th to Saturday 22nd June 2024. You can get tickets from www.ascot.com/horseraces-and-events/royal-ascot/overview.

Morgan isn’t like other car companies. While most other premium brands mass produce sportscars, Morgan makes every single car to order. No matter how hard you try, you’ll never find two Morgan cars the same. Each one is as unique as its owner.
LUXURY HOME & LIFESTYLE
Malvern born and bred
MODERN HERITAGE
Based in Malvern for over 115 years, the company is a landmark of Worcestershire, an unshakeable feature of the community.
HFS Morgan actually opened the factory in Worcester Road in 1909, before relocating his team to Pickersleigh Road in 1914. The factory has been there ever since and has built every Morgan sportscar that has ever graced the roads.
This prestigious brand is unique in its approach to car buying. There are only 14 dealerships in the UK and a handful of branches around the world, adding to the exclusive nature of these vehicles. And they hold their value better than other cars too, but you don’t buy a Morgan with the idea of selling it one day – these are cars made to love and last, to be passed down through the family as an heirloom.
The design process is simple, but never bettered. All Morgan cars are made of three main materials – wood, aluminum and leather. Morgan is famous for its wooden frames, prototyped by HFS Morgan in 1909, when he decided he would rather make his own car than buy one from the car garage he owned.
His car had three wheels and was the very first Morgan car, known as The Runabout. The company grew from there, with HFS Morgan at the forefront of expansion and success, all from his modest base in Malvern.
A KEY PART OF THE COMMUNITY
It is this connection to the area that is so important to the brand today. These cars are as much about heritage as they are about transport. Even newly built Morgan vehicles have a ‘classic’ feel to them – brand new ‘old’ vehicles that exude charm and turn heads on the road.
The factory brings lots of money to the area – not just by selling cars, but by boosting tourism too. The experience part of the factory attracts over 30,000 car enthusiasts every year, giving them a glimpse into 21st century coachbuilding in action. Visitors are guided through the workshops where they can see the cars being built – each one meticulously crafted by hand. Whether you’re interested in the manufacturing process or have ever dreamt of owning a Morgan car, this peek behind the scenes will only enhance your appreciation for these iconic vehicles.
THE BUYING PROCESS
If you are ready to realise your dream of owning a Morgan car, be prepared to be hit with a limitless array of options! Since every model is made to order, it can be between six and 12 months before you can finally drive your vehicle away.
There are currently three models to choose from: Super 3, Plus Four and Plus Six, but these all have upgrade options and endless colour choices. Dark blue and green are the most popular colours on the four-wheeled designs, while customers tend to prefer brighter, more vibrant colours on their Super 3.
But, of course, the aim is always a car that suits your personality, so go ahead and break the mould! Prices start at £43,000, not including registration and upgrade options.
The current model selection is a result of many years of design and development work. Each car must meet the exacting requirements of the brand, and adhere to its core values:
• Always bespoke
• Pure driving pleasure
• Timeless design
• Rich heritage, exciting future
• 21st century coachbuilding
If you do take the plunge and buy yourself a Morgan car, you’ll be in great company. Past customers have included Mick Jagger, Ralph Lauren and Bridget Bardot!
Now, will that be three wheels or four?

This will be the third year of the Festival and it’s set to be the most spectacular yet.”
“I’m particularly excited that people will be able to sample Glynn Purnell, the iconic Yummy Brummie’s, Michelin Star quality dishes as part of the event this year! We have a whole host more show-stopping venues still to be announced so be sure to subscribe to our e-news if you want to be the first to hear about those.”
While some restaurants may have the capacity for walk-ins, to guarantee access to the exclusive festival menus, diners must book in advance. Diners do not need to purchase a ticket or wristband. Reservations will be live from the 20th of June to make bookings for the 1st to the 31st of August.
To make a booking during Birmingham Restaurant Festival, diners should go to www.birminghamrestaurantfestival.co.uk and follow the directions given on the individual restaurant pages to ensure the menu is available on the desired day.

AKTAR ISLAM
With two Michellin stars to its name, Opheem is the ultimate dinner destination for anyone who likes Indian cooking. Opened in 2018, the restaurant has become a landmark in Aston, offering both traditional and modern cooking techniques based on seasonal produce and good, hearty flavours.
PROPER INDIAN FOOD
Aktar Islam opened Opheem in 2018, inspired to push the boundaries of what Indian cuisine could be. You won’t find a boring korma or an over-powering phall here – Aktar’s menu is carefully curated to show how Indian cooking should be done. With tasting menus and à la carte lunch options, you’ll never look at this kind of food the same way again.
Born and bred in Birmingham, Aktar always knew his first restaurant would be based in the area. He received his first Michelin star in 2019, just one year after he opened Opheem. The second one came this year, making the restaurant Birmingham’s first and only two-star eatery. It is also the only two-star Indian restaurant outside of London, something that Aktar says is “an incredible honour”.
He puts his success down to many years of dedication and hard work. He started working in his father’s restaurant when he was 13 years old, learning his craft from the motivated chefs around him. He says he hasn’t left the kitchen since.
BUILDING SUCCESS
Every good restaurant is only as good as its staff and Aktar is keen to create a space where young chefs and hospitality professionals can grow their career to become the very best they can be. He aims to provide a supportive environment, free of prejudice, so that everyone, irrespective of their skill set and experience, can make a difference to his business.
With a good staff backbone, the next step is creating a menu. Aktar says: “Our menu is based on the best of the seasons and the best produce available. The menu tells diners both the original dish by which the course is inspired, as well as the region where it originates.”
It’s details like this that turn the dining experience into something special. Not only do you get a delicious feed, but you learn a little more about a cuisine that has become incredibly

anglicised in many other Indian restaurants. This is authentic, delicious food that might surprise some people.
STRIVING FOR MORE
With two Michellin stars to boast about, it would be easy to think that Aktar could take it easy for a while. But he has no such plans: “The journey has always been to be the best we can be with the hope that we can be better tomorrow. It’s in our DNA to continue that journey. But I can tell you one thing for sure – we are nowhere near slowing down. We’re nowhere near finished.”
While the restaurant keeps Aktar incredibly busy, he has also honed his home delivery process. Hungry patrons can order curries to go and Aktar and his team can cater for large gatherings with their amazing food. You can even buy gift cards for special events – who wouldn’t want to open a birthday card to find a voucher for Opheem or Aktar at Home inside?
Somehow, despite his incredibly busy schedule, he has found time to be on TV. You might recognise Aktar from his stint on The Great British Menu. Or perhaps you’ve seen him on Masterchef:
The Professionals? Maybe you remember seeing him on Saturday Kitchen, Market Kitchen or The One Show?
With TV credentials like this, alongside his Michelin success, it is clear to see that Aktar is well-respected in the industry. If you haven’t yet made the trip to Opheem, now is surely the time to see what all the fuss is about. You won’t be disappointed!

LAAL MAANS
Traditional spicy lamb curry from the dessert state of Rajasthan, pungent sauce with aromas from all the whole spices and heat from the deep red Kashmiri chilli. This curry is a definite must for anyone who loves Indian food.
INGREDIENTS
• 1.5 kg of lamb leg or shoulder cubed
• 3 white onions chopped fine
• 8 cloves of garlic minced
• 2 inches of ginger minced
• 100 ml corn oil
• 1tsp salt
WHOLE MASALA
• 4 cassia leaves
• 3 inches of cassia bark
• 2 Black cardamom
• 3 green cardamom
• 6 cloves
GROUND SPICES
• 2 tbsp Kashmiri chilli powder
• ½ tsp turmeric
• 2 tbsp ground coriander
• 3/4 tbsp ground cumin
• 1 tsp garam masala
• 3 tbsp tomato puree
FOR THE SMOKING PROCESS
(OPTIONAL)
• 3 lumps of charcoal
• 1 tbsp of ghee
METHOD
• Heat oil in a heavy based pot, sear the lamb chunks and brown evenly in small batches and set aside in a bowl.
• Add a little bit more oil to the pot then add the whole masala and infuse in the oil for 1 minute over moderate heat.
• Now add the onions and a sprinkle of salt, brown the onions until caramelised. This will take around ten minutes.
• Once the onions are brown add the garlic and ginger and cook out for 2 minutes
• Add the ground spices and cook out on low heat with a splash of water for 2 minutes then add the tomato puree and cook slowly for a further five minutes; adding a drop of water when the masala catches on your pan.
• Once the oil has separated add the seared lamb along with any juices in the bowl and coat with the masala, cook the lamb in the masala for 10 minutes and then add enough boiling water to cover the meat and simmer slowly for an hour or until the lamb is tender.
• Adjust the seasoning to taste.
TO SMOKE (OPTIONAL)
• Heat charcoal until smouldering, place in a small metal dish wrapped in tin foil, rest the dish inside the pot with the curry. Pour in ghee and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid.
• Remove charcoal tin before serving.

On graduating from culinary school, it was clear that Chris Emery was destined for great things. His background which takes in Michelin kitchens working alongside some of the most notable chefs in the industry has helped shape his craft and vision which he brought to the role of Executive Chef for Orelle, the stunning restaurant which enjoys panoramic views of the city, on Colmore Row in 2022. Here, he tells us more about his journey.
BUILDING ON AN INTERNATIONAL CAREER
His career has taken him from Berkshire to Newcastle, Bath, Oxford, London and even New York! Every restaurant he has worked in has taught him something new about food and how to create dishes that delight the diner. After joining the D&D group in 2022, he finally moved to Birmingham to bring the dream of Orelle to life.
He thinks the success of the restaurant is down to a catalogue of things: “Dining at Orelle is an unmissable experience. Not only is Orelle one of the most impressive, show-stopping locations in the city to dine in, but the restaurant also offers high-quality food, with the three-course Prix Fixe menu costing an extremely reasonable £35.
“The restaurant prides itself on its rigorous in-house training and how they respond to reviews across multiple platforms. The team is constantly honing their skills and ensuring guests receive the best service. “
When it comes down to it, the quality of the food and service are the most important aspects of any restaurant, and the Orelle team offers the best of both: “The quality of produce is at the forefront of every menu, from the Tasting Menu to A La Carte, Prix Fixe and Sunday Lunch, the restaurant always caters for all. Not only do we offer the highest-quality food, drinks and service, but the venue also has a downstairs café, which provide breakfast and lunch offerings throughout the week.”
And if you want something different, they also like to get creative with their evenings and often hold events. In the past they’ve hosted a blackout dinner, where the restaurant is lit by candlelight only, encouraging a more sensory connection to the food. There’s been a three-course meal and cocktail pairing night and a collaborative evening with our old friends, Simpsons restaurant.
DAY-TO-DAY EXCELLENCE
So, what does it take to run one of the most successful restaurants in Birmingham? “As soon as I get to the restaurant, I’m on the phone to my suppliers, checking what produce they have and already thinking about what I could cook the next day. I also have to make sure all deliveries we’ve received that day are correct. I then usually follow a routine of prepping, lunch service, clean down, staff meal, prep, evening service, last clean down and a final check over stock and prep for the next day.”
Chris’ personal favourite dish is the cured Cornish mackerel, rhubarb, tartare and blood orange granita. “Our menus always begin with our suppliers and the seasonality of our ingredients. We work very closely with all our suppliers and are in conversations with them daily to chat about what they have in stock and how we can utilise everything they’re bringing to the restaurant.”
He thinks the cost of living has had a huge impact on the way restaurants are creating their menus, encouraging them to use local ingredients rather than shipping in more exotic foods. That said, he has his eye on trends in the business: “Japanese cuisine and using its techniques are definitely trends I’ve seen more and more of recently. Dishes are ingredient-led, made using a ton of technique.”

Chris Emery
MICHELIN STAR IN THE MAKING?
So, what else can we expect from Orelle in the future? “[I’ll] keep improving the food, service and guest experience and building the restaurant’s name and reputation in the city. Ultimately, everybody wants a star. It would be incredible, and I’d love to take the restaurant down that route, but at the moment, the core goals are to keep cooking food to a high standard, give everyone a wonderful experience and ensuring our customers keep coming back. Repeat guests means we’re doing something right.
If accolades come, then great, but ultimately my main goal is to make sure we deliver a great experience and make sure we have a full restaurant.”

Pride
On Saturday 25th May, crowds will flock to the streets of Birmingham to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, watch the famous Pride parade and help spread a message of love to the world.
LOVE HAS NO LIMITS
This year’s theme is “Love has no limits” and it promises to be a fun, vibrant weekend of hope and positivity. But it is important to remember the reason this event exists. Lawrence Barton, Birmingham Pride Festival Director, explains:
“Globally, our community is underrepresented and strives for international equality. That said, the commonwealth alone has
more countries with anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and some countries still have the death penalty in place. So, for a major city in the UK to have a voice and platform to represent our community in a positive way and to keep dialogue open around global inequality, is very important.”
Pride is about protest as much as it is about love. It is about taking a stand against injustice, no matter where that might be taking place in the world, but doing so in a non-violent, bright and beautiful way. So, while the undertone of the festival is gravely serious, the event is about bringing the community together and ensuring everyone is having a good time.
And music is a huge part of that. Lawrence says: “Music is universally very important to a lot of people - anthemic tunes and popular music of all genres has always been part of the way our community expresses itself.”
And they will be expressing themself in true Pride style this year! With Eurovision winner Loreen headlining the main stage on Saturday, supported by Natasha Bedingfield, Heather Small
2024
and Danny Beard, the party will certainly be jumping! And, on Sunday, festival-goers can enjoy entertainment from Sophie Ellis Bextor, Jameilia and Gok Wan!
A BASE OF LOVE
With Pride events scheduled around the country this summer, millions of people still head to Birmingham each year, keen to celebrate in a bigger city with more like-minded people. Lawrence says: “Birmingham Pride is currently the largest LGBTQ+ event to take place in the West Midlands Region. Over 50% of the attendees are from Birmingham: that’s testament to how important it is to them. I personally love Pride, the social impact it has and the platform and voice it provides our community with in the heart of the city.”
The first Birmingham-based Pride event took place in 1997 and was a simple street carnival, market and live music. It has evolved hugely over the years, just like the Pride movement, and Lawrence thinks it will continue to grow as the campaign for worldwide equality gathers pace.
“The expectations of what Pride is continue to vary a great deal and that’s cool. There are large Prides which have grown and evolved over time and smaller Prides across the length and breadth of the country. That means the scope of Pride is diverse and wide-ranging - I view that as a very positive thing.”
THE IMPORTANT DETAILS
This year’s Birmingham Pride kicks off on Friday 24th May, with a Big Free Community Event at Smithfield Live. Although it is a free event, you do still need a ticket to get in.
On Saturday 25th May, the parade starts at Centenary Square at 12pm and goes through the city to the LGBTQ+ village. It is free to watch and is usually attended by over 75,000 people.
If you want to join in with all the festival goings-on over the weekend, tickets range in price from £36.85 up to £116.85 for full weekend access. For more details, head to: birminghampride.com/tickets
Dilapidated to divine
When Katie Bayfield and her husband first saw the worn-down, once-majestic hall in Norfolk in 2017, they knew right away they’d found their dream home.
Looking past the rotten beams, extreme water damage and the fact that it was on the brink of collapse, they saw a beautiful home that needed to be saved.
REBUILDING A MANSION
The house had been boarded up for 20 years before Katie signed the deeds. “It was an amazing day to take the boards off the windows to let the house breathe again.” Now almost completely unrecognisable from the crumbling mess it once was, the hall is a luxury home for Katie and her family. With three children and a dog running around the hall, they’ve turned their listed building into a warm and cosy space – not an easy feat for a building of this size!
But the transformation has been a labour of love. As Katie said: “My husband didn’t get too phased by the amount of work that needed to be done. He took it all in his stride; we both felt very blessed to be able to buy the hall and make it into our family home, so we enjoyed every minute.”
They took a year off to focus on the hall and got to work right away. The couple had lots of experience in renovating old buildings, so despite the challenge ahead, they were confident they could turn the fortunes of this dilapidated building around.
“Working with my husband for the last 20 years renovating multiple properties, from old to new throughout Norfolk, I have gained so much experience and the properties have been so versatile. I have designed for all budgets which I think, since COVID, is really important.”
There are many beautiful spaces in the home now, but Katie has a clear favourite: “We have a large open plan kitchen going off into an orangery, which I love all the natural light flooding through into the kitchen. We spend most of our time in here.”
As owners of a listed building, Katie and her husband have a responsibility to ensure it stays in good condition for many years to come. For this reason, her work is never done: “I don’t think the hall will ever be finished. We always find things that need to be done and with such a big property comes lots of maintenance.”
SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS
Luckily for us, she regularly updates her Instagram page to show the maintenance required and with plenty of before and after pictures. Through this, she has become quite a social media star!
“An interior influencer was not my intention; however, I do have a passion for interiors and enjoy passing on some tips and ideas to help save money where possible.
“My most successful post was overall our renovation from start to finish of my home in Norfolk. Our home was on the risk list as it was too unsafe, even though it also had planning permission to be converted into eight dwellings, Lester and I felt it was vitally important to save this old building from being split into multiple units and restored to its original legacy as a family home.”
TAKING PASSION INTO BUSINESS
This love for home restoration and design has evolved into a new business. Teaming up with her friend, Laura Ruddy, together they have created Norfolk Luxury Furniture. With a strong focus on interior design, the business can adapt to your needs and budget. In Katie’s words: “We cater for anything from a small candle up to a full renovation - residential and commercial.”
If you need proof of their skills, it’s all over Instagram for you to see! These businesswomen know what they are doing!
And when it comes to starting a new renovation, Katie thinks you should be fearless: “Go for it, embrace it and enjoy it, and always have a contingency fund.”

Have you seen Holly Home?Lodge
If you’ve ever dreamt of packing everything up and moving to France, then you’re on exactly the same wavelength as Amanda Baker. But be warned, if you spend more than two minutes scrolling through her Instagram account, you might find yourself on a Eurostar train before you’ve really thought through the logistics!
This social media influencer has become so good at creating beautiful interiors and showing them off on her grid that she’s been able to move from her home in the UK to a stunning home in the French countryside with her husband Lee. She quit her job in HR and sales and influencing is now her full-time career. And she is smashing it!
Social media success
It was never part of her plan. After her sister-in-law encouraged her to set up a home account on Instagram, she noticed how quickly her engagement was growing, completely organically. “I started sharing my up-cycling, decorating, home styling and table setting ideas and it took off from there. I have always had a real passion for Interiors and styling though.”
Despite not having a social media plan, Amanda thinks she knows the key to her success. “My account has grown organically but it takes a lot of work and effort, engaging and content creating! I always post as regularly as possible each week, and I always take the time to reply to all the lovely comments and direct messages I receive too.”
When you consider that she currently has 135k followers, you can see why she had to leave her job! In between content creating and engaging, there can’t be much time for anything else. But when she is able to work with brands like Laura Ashley, Dyson, and Frenchic Paint, you know she must love what she does.
And for any brands who may be reading, she is still open to offers. “I would love an opportunity to collaborate with The White Company, Maison Du Monde, Neptune and Stihl and to expand on my collaborations within Europe.”
Growing up in creativity
Amanda’s love of interior design stems from her childhood. “Growing up I was surrounded by creative members of my family, particularly my mum. We did pottery, painting, sewing, floristry and decorating together.
“Having a real passion for creating a warm and inviting home environment, I decided to complete a recreational course in interior design which I absolutely loved. I have also
completed recreational courses in upholstery and soft furnishings.”
Influencing the influencer
She is inspired by influencers on social media, especially Instagram and Pinterest and some of her favourite accounts are:
@cotedeco.reno @shuttersandstripes
@thewhitethistle @kbgardesnhomes
@simshilditch @stillers.home
@thehousebuild @b__living
She also scours home inspiration magazines and likes to find ideas when she travels.
She has a lot of advice for anyone needing help with their own home projects: “Start by thinking about the style, colour scheme, lighting, and overall tone of your space. Consider the layout and flow of the room and focal points such as a fireplace or console table.
Creating a mood board can really help you to establish what textures, tones and patterns work well together and what doesn’t.”
Top tips for your home
It’s not all about being inspired though. To be a successful interior influencer, you have to think practically. Amanda encourages everyone to draft a budget for individual spaces. Budgeting at a micro level can make things seem more manageable and then you can work your way around your home.
And if your budget is tight, swerve traditional furniture and home stores. Amanda loves to get creative. “Consider introducing individual pieces of furniture and up-cycling them too. Thrift shops and [Facebook] Marketplace can be a great source for unique and vintage finds to furnish and accessorise your home.”
Amanda finds it quite easy to keep her home looking visitorready now it’s just her and her husband, but she remembers the days of having young children in the home all too well. For anyone pulling their hair out because their kid’s toys are lying all around the house, she says: “I remember it well when my children were much younger, and I always made it a game to put their toys away before going to bed each night. I used to have a huge wicker basket in their playroom that most of their toys could be packed away into. I also up-cycled an old cupboard to look like a giant dolls house for my daughter’s bedroom for her to pack her toys away in too.”

LIVING THE GOOD OUTDOOR LIFE
The sun is shining, and the garden is calling. But don’t dust off your rusty old barbecue just yet. These days, if you want to host a garden party or eat in the comfort of your own outdoor space, you need a garden kitchen. Maybe it’s a hangover from the pandemic, but there’s something freeing and infinitely more enjoyable about cooking outdoors. And having a whole kitchen in your back garden means you don’t have to keep traipsing back indoors to get salads, sauces,
1 / Choose a suitable space in your garden
You probably won’t want to use up the sunniest spot for your kitchen, but you won’t want your shade to come in the form of over-hanging branches – nobody wants blossom and twigs in their dinner! If you only have one logical space for a kitchen garden, then you’ll need to consider how big you want to go with it. Do you want a permanent structure or freestanding units you can move into the shed over winter? Make sure you have a good idea of this before you start contacting suppliers.
2 / Decide your budget
The biggest problem with outdoor kitchens is that you’ll get so involved in all the different options that the cost can skyrocket before you’ve even worked out what you’ll be cooking on! Set your budget and stick to it, otherwise your all singing, alldancing outdoor space could become a liability!
3 / Don’t forget lighting!
You’ll want to make the most of your kitchen, so make sure you have plenty of integrated outdoor lighting set-up, allowing you to cook long into the evening.
4 / Where will you wash up?
Your outdoor kitchen can include a sink if you want it to, but this requires a plumber to come in and extend your water facilities. If you are happy to have part of your garden dug up to facilitate this, then that short-term inconvenience could be a long-term benefit. If not, you might want to reconsider where you place your garden kitchen – closer to the house will make cleaning up easier.
42 LUXURY HOME & LIFESTYLE
cutlery and anything else you might have forgotten. You can create a whole set-up in a convenient space. And come rain or shine, you can cook up a storm!
So, where to start? Just like cooking, planning a garden kitchen is all in the preparation. Get that right and your building recipe will fall into place. Our helpful guide might help:
5 / How will you cook?
You can build a kitchen garden around a portable BBQ if you like, but your cooking options are endless. A built-in BBQ is a popular option, or you might consider a smoker or a pizza oven. If you want to get really fancy and can extend your electrics, you might like a teppanyaki grill.
7 / Consider your layout
It’s a great idea to have your outdoor kitchen up against a wall, giving it some protection against wind, rain and sun damage, but also saving space for people to sit close by. You also need to work out what exactly your kitchen needs to do. How much storage will you have? Do you need access to electricity or will you be working around a built-in barbecue? Do you want an overhead canopy so you can use it all year round? If your canopy reaches a certain height, you might have to consider planning permission. Think of function first, aesthetics second. It’s no good having a pretty kitchen if you don’t ever use it because it’s not functional.
6 / Which materials will you choose?
This is as much about how it looks as about how it works in your chosen garden environment. You want materials that are heat resistant and non-chip, just like in your indoor kitchen, but you also have to consider weather damage – you don’t want to cook in a rusty kitchen that’s blown over in the wind! Make sure you do your homework here and see what suppliers have to offer.
A kitchen garden is a truly wonderful addition to any garden and can be customised to fit any size space. Get it right, and you’ll never want to cook indoors again!

MADAME BUTTERFLY AT THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Giacomo Puccini’s timeless opera Madame Butterfly unfolds with all the elegance and drama befitting its status as one of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire. At the heart of the production, the titular character, Cio-Cio-San, portrays heart-wrenching vulnerability by a talented soprano. Her portrayal of the young geisha who falls in love with an American naval officer, only to be abandoned and ultimately betrayed, is both captivating and emotionally devastating.

THE RISE OF FEMALE
football
62 LUXURY HOME & LIFESTYLE
Where were you when Spain claimed victory over England in Sydney? Did you watch in the pub, surrounded by crowds of chanting football fans? Did you watch from the quiet sanctuary of your home, cheering on the ladies as they made sporting history? Or maybe you made the 23-hour trip to Australia, to feel the atmosphere that you can only get from a packed stadium.
Even if you didn’t manage to watch the game, you will have heard all about it. After being mostly ignored by football pundits, sporting commentators and the industry in general, women’s football was suddenly hot property. Turns out, female football is actually very good!
Female football fever is about to hit us all again, with the upcoming FA cup final. It might not be on the same scale as international football, but we are promised an entertaining match. Will your team be holding the trophy on Sunday the 12th May or will you be watching through your fingers as you curse the referee? Whether you are jumping for joy or drowning your sorrows, you will still feel a huge sense of pride – women’s football is back and it’s better than ever!
THE HISTORY OF WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
To truly understand just how important it is to celebrate and continue to champion women’s football, you need to know the history behind the sport.
Both women and men were playing football in the 15th century, but in the 19th century, as the sport grew and leagues got serious, there was a backlash against women’s football. The first recorded league game was in 1881 in Edinburgh. More games were scheduled but then abandoned due to a violent backlash.
Then came the First World War. With men’s games suspended, the women could shine. Competitive sport was thought to be good for morale and so it was encouraged by businesses who relied on these ladies to keep the country going.
Of course, when the war ended, society expected everything to go back to normal. Suddenly the Football Association didn’t like the idea of women in the game. They enforced a ban on women using men’s facilities to play football in 1921. So, while they steered clear of an outright ban on women playing, they took away all the appropriate places for them to do so and made it illegal for them to use professional referees.
In 1967, women started to challenge this ban. They found men’s teams willing to help them by letting them use their training grounds and playing against them. It took three years of campaigning, but the FA ban was eventually lifted in 1970 and the Women’s Football Association was born in the UK. Soon, the game went international.
Despite all this, women in England were not able to build fulltime football careers until 2009 when central contracts were introduced. There was no professional football league until 2018!
So, women’s football might not yet be at the same level as men’s, but they’ve not had as long to build up a fan base. The professional sport is only six years old, the result of an ongoing campaign to let women have the same opportunities as men on the pitch.
With all that in mind, what our women’s teams have achieved so far is quite incredible. Just imagine how good the sport will be in a few more years’ time!
When is the FA Cup Final?
