Bookbinding Bookbinding

M

Course Tutor: Hannah Yevtukh The bookbinding courses are for students of all levels of skill and experience who wish either to repair or rebind their own old books, or to bind new books in a creative and interesting way. The course is based on traditional techniques of craft bookbinding. Beginners start by making a single-section pamphlet which can usually be completed by the second session. This gives them the feel of the materials and an idea of the techniques involved. They then rebind a multi-section book as a case-binding and finally a multi-section book with a leather spine. This gives the students an idea of book structure and they can then develop their interests in any direction. Students will acquire a knowledge of a trade craft which has disappeared from the commercial production of books, but which is still necessary, as books will always need repairing. It is being kept alive by individual enthusiasts such as those students who have been attending our courses for many years. Malvern College is one of the few places in the country which still offers traditional bookbinding. There is no set time to finish a particular exercise, as the length of time taken depends on the amount of work needed for a particular book. The three beginners’ exercises usually take about two terms. Hannah Yevtukh studied art and bookbinding in the Ukraine and has been making unusual creative books since 1998. She is a member of the Society of Bookbinders and the local Guild of Designer Craftsmen.

Degree Modules Validated by the University of Worcester, these Level 1 modules count towards a modular degree programme. For details contact Caroline Park on 01694 584559. To enrol contact the University of Worcester on 01905 855000.
