Welcome to Midland Met from Chief Executive, Richard Beeken

Welcome to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

This is your essential guide as we begin an exciting new chapter at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB).

Making a move as big as this can be filled with emotions, but we’re here to support you. This handbook complements your staff induction, outlining what you can expect from our new hospital.

The opening of Midland Met is thanks to the hard work and dedication of colleagues, suppliers, stakeholders, partners, patients and our communities. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this achievement.

Our new hospital allows us to deliver acute care in a state-of-the-art environment. It integrates routine care, diagnostics, and outpatient clinics across our SWB estate, alongside primary care and community services and it is something we should all be proud of.

Midland Met offers a unique opportunity to enhance patient care and truly embody our values of ambition, respect, and compassion. We share a responsibility to make the most of this opportunity for our patients, communities and each other.

Opening a new hospital is a once-in-a-career moment. Enjoy this time, meet new colleagues, and explore all that Midland Met has to offer.

Our SWB family makes this a fantastic place to work, and I’m confident we’ll make Midland Met the best it can be.

With very best wishes, Your Chief Exec, Richard.

About Midland Met

Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) brings together all our acute and emergency care under one roof.

By combining emergency and acute services from City and Sandwell Hospitals, it allows us to provide efficient and effective healthcare whilst enhancing the patient experience, bringing together all acute clinical teams and resources on one site.

Clinical model

At Midland Met, we provide a wide range of clinical services to meet the needs of our communities, including:

Same Day Emergency Care.

A seven-day consultant led service will ensure we provide equitable access to care and treatment.

A purpose-built emergency department with co-located imaging and diagnostic services.

Dedicated children’s emergency department and assessment unit.

736 beds with 50 per cent in ensuite single rooms.

13 operating theatres.

Maternity service including triage, midwife led birthing unit (Serenity) with six birthing rooms, labour ward, two maternity wards, neonatal unit and antenatal services.

Regional sickle cell and thalassaemia centre.

Midland Met is supported by primary care and community services providing routine care, diagnostics, outpatient clinics, and other services across our SWB estate.

Design features

Our new hospital is designed to help us deliver safe and effective personcentred care with a bright, spacious layout and separate pathways for patients, visitors and goods. This means everyone can move around the hospital safely, supporting patient dignity and with minimal interruptions from deliveries or other services.

We have incorporated green spaces throughout the hospital, including six internal planted gardens, the Winter Garden and our community garden.

At the core of the building, you will find the Winter Garden with a restaurant, coffee shop and retail spaces. Located on level 5 this is a non-clinical space with seating areas to relax, a contemporary art gallery, education centre and spiritual care centre.

The outside terrace has a quarter mile long scenic path circling around the building, perfect for getting your steps in while enjoying the views.

The essentials

Parking

The address for Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is Grove Lane, Smethwick, B66 2QT.

If you are driving to work, you’ll park in the colleague car park. It is accessed from London Street, Smethwick, B66 2SH, just behind the hospital off Grove Lane.

We also have 30 electric car charging stations on level 0 and level 1. To use these charging points, register at cpsgenie.com.

Finding your way around

To get into the hospital, you will need a new ID card, and this will work across all our sites. This is issued to you once you have fully completed your staff induction.

Our new hospital is conveniently located less than a mile from City Health Campus, right on a main road with good bus and rail links.

When Midland Met opens, buses 54 and 89 will stop directly on site close to the public entrance. Buses 82 and 87 will stop a short walk away at the bus layover accessible via the public green area at the front of the hospital.

Navigating our new hospital

We’ve designed our new hospital with separate routes for patients, colleagues and goods. While colleagues can use any of the lifts and stairwells, patients will not be able to access areas meant for colleagues or goods. Grey doors mark areas that are for colleague use only.

Colleague navigation

Besides the public lift cores, there are two sets of bed lifts – bed lifts east and bed lifts west. Colleagues can use both the public and clinical lift cores to navigate the building.

Patient movement

Patient bed lifts are located on the east and west sides of the hospital. These lifts are used to move patients privately, ensuring their dignity is maintained.

Discharge lounge

We have a discharge lounge available to support patients to return home. It is located on level 3 within the Medical Day Procedure Unit.

Goods

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) will use the goods lifts to transport supplies and consumables to hubs on each level before distribution by the new logistics team.

Visitor access

All visitors enter Midland Met at level 0 and take the shuttle lifts to level 5. This is home to our Welcome

Centre and Winter Garden area. From level 5, visitors can access the rest of the hospital.

Public lift cores

Within the Winter Garden, the public access wards and departments via one of the five public lift cores labelled A, B, and C at the front and D and E at the back. Each is visible from the level 5 arrival point and has a different colour to support navigation.

From level 5, wards and departments can be reached using the public lifts and have a simple address system. Each address combines the letter of the lift core with the floor number. For example, if you need to go to ward A6, take the lift at core A to level 6.

Dementia-friendly design

The hospital’s colours create a dementia-friendly environment, helping patients recognise their location. Each ward follows the same layout, with assorted colour themes for groups of four beds. Additionally, pictorial signs on bathroom doors and bed spaces assist patients in finding their way, overcoming any language barriers.

Emergency Medical Response Teams

In an emergency, call 2222 and advise of the location and details for raising the alarm.

Midland Met has two response teams: one for level 2 and another for levels 3–9.

At City Health Campus we will have an emergency medical response team available 24/7, every day of the week. At Sandwell Health Campus the same service will be available from 7am–10pm Monday–Friday after our move to Midland Met.

Reporting an accident or incident

It is essential to report all accidents or incidents to your line manager.

Our accident and incident reporting process remains the same and any issues will be addressed via the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework.

How to raise a fire alarm

In case of a fire, here’s what to do:

Leave the room or area immediately and close any door.

Break the glass at the safest fire alarm call point.

Ring 2222 and advise of the location and details for raising the alarm.

Follow your local fire evacuation plan contained in your fire safety manual and follow the instructions of the fire scene manager.

Panic alarms

These are in departments throughout Midland Met. The exact location of your panic alarm is available in your department induction.

Should you ever need to activate an alarm, please press the two red buttons together. It will sound in your staff base, and the security control room and the security team will respond promptly.

Finding your feet

Induction

It is crucial that everyone working in Midland Met understands how our new hospital works and what is expected of them.

Induction

Summary

Not everyone’s induction will be the same – it is tailored to fit your role and department to ensure you get the most out of it. You will find the induction programme on Centric Cortex on the intranet.

This is how the induction programme is structured.

Clinical support services

Pharmacy

We have an inpatient pharmacy on level 4 which will provide inpatient and discharge medication to clinical areas at Midland Met. IV fluids will be provided as part of a managed IV fluid service from an external company. The Midland Met pharmacy dispensary is open seven days a week operating 9am–5pm.

Prescriptions and requests will be fulfilled the same day if presented before the relevant cut-off:

The provision of outpatient medication will be available via FP10 community prescriptions and the dispensing hubs at Sheldon Block Pharmacy and Sandwell Health Campus along with bespoke arrangements for the small number of outpatient clinics at Midland Met.

Automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) will be installed in most clinical areas Trust-wide for colleagues to administer medication to patients in their areas. These cabinets will make it safer to administer medication directly to patients. Where we have ADCs, you’ll also find medication smart carts to help streamline the medicines administration process.

Informatics

At Midland Met, our Informatics team is on hand to support you. This is what’s available:

Walk in support on level 5 and floor walkers for each level during the move period.

On-site assistance will be available with Informatics colleagues in every agile working area during the move period.

You can stay connected with a mobile signal throughout the building including car parks.

The hospital benefits from Wi-Fi in all clinical and admin areas.

New ways of working

Clinical services by site

Sandwell, City and Midland Met are now called health campuses to reflect the services provided at each site. Midland Met is our go-to for critical and emergency care. Sandwell and City Health Campuses will primarily focus on outpatient appointments and diagnostics meaning that patients can access routine consultations and tests closer to home and care up to 23 hours including day case surgery.

Meanwhile, significant changes have taken place in our community and primary care services so that even more care is provided in people’s own homes, and this will remain an important part of the services we provide.

A variety of workspaces for clinical and non-clinical colleagues are available throughout Midland Met. These flexible workspaces allow you to work according to your schedule without being restricted to a particular area. Plus, all spaces have PCs, docking ports, and tap-and-go technology so you can get to work with ease wherever you choose.

There are approximately 230 agile desks for clinical, non-clinical, and administrative colleagues to use.

Admin zones include a variety of additional spaces, such as meeting and quiet rooms and beverage bays for departments to use.

Seminar rooms and meeting rooms are bookable and are on each level.

The education centre includes a lecture theatre, a library and an e-learning centre.

The spacious Winter Garden on level 5.

Ward standardisation

We've standardised our wards to ensure everything runs smoothly and patients get the best care possible.

Taking this approach means that no matter which ward you work on, you will find everything set up the same way, helping us maintain best practices in patient care and minimising the risk of errors.

Ward areas

Every ward will broadly have the same layout. Patient rooms have a standard design – e.g., bed placement, bathroom location and medical equipment arrangement.

You will find clean and dirty utilities, drug cabinets, stock item colour coding, storage, and staff base areas in the same places.

Having a familiar layout across wards helps everyone work efficiently and makes it easy to move between wards if required.

Equipment standardisation:

We have standardised medical devices (e.g., IV pumps, monitors) across wards to reduce training time and errors.

You will find consistent furniture and fixtures so it’s easy to maintain and replace them if required.

Consistent daily routine

We will follow the existing Rhythm of the Day at Midland Met.

Ward and board rounds will take place across all areas at the same time.

Rhythm of the day

Introducing our logistics service

We're introducing a new logistics team and service. Routine movement of goods, supplies and waste management will be scheduled and carried out either by our new AGVs or a member of the logistics team. The logistics team will move items across Midland Met and our SWB estate.

At Midland Met, ad-hoc moves can be requested from the 24/7 helpdesk and logistics colleagues will coordinate these moves.

We will have 12 bright yellow automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that will undertake movement of supplies, linen, catering, waste, and other items. Managed by the logistics team, the AGVs will move efficiently on set routes between level 0 and the logistics hubs on floors 2–9. They'll use separate lifts, so they won't be in general staff, patient or visitor areas. It will ensure the timely delivery of goods and other items to logistics hubs, where our logistics, ward service, and catering colleagues can then distribute them as needed.

#Morethanahospital

Midland Met will be a catalyst for growth in the immediate and surrounding areas. These are just some ways it will be #morethanahospital.

Urgent Treatment Centre

Midland Met will benefit from having an urgent treatment centre (UTC) on site. It will offer GP-led urgent, but not emergency care, for ailments such as suspected broken bones, abdominal pain and minor illnesses.

In 2024, we’ll launch an interim UTC at Midland Met to coincide with the opening of our new hospital. The permanent UTC will be built on the same site and is set to open in 2025.

The Midland Met learning campus

The learning campus is a major new education and skills resource, developed in partnership with further and higher education providers, which is being developed on the Midland Met estate offering training from entry level to level 7 skills.

Due to open in 2025, it will be linked to the new hospital and focussed on widening participation in education. Find out more via https://mmuhlearningcampus.co.uk

The

People’s Art Gallery

We have invested in high quality arts, education, and heritage programmes to help enhance the experience of our patients, colleagues and visitors.

Our contemporary art gallery will host themed exhibitions and display local arts that celebrates and includes our local communities.

Our community garden

One of the things we are proud to share with you is our community garden. Green spaces are known to boost wellbeing, so we’ve created a haven for colleagues, patients and visitors to enjoy.
