Editorial
Autumn 2023
We hope you are enjoying the late surge of warm weather and that you have had a successful start to the new season at local league level. At International level, particularly with the juniors, there is no season nowadays and this issue covers many of the tournaments that have taken place over the last few months. Another aspect that is increasingly common is the globalisation of our sport with many of the junior tournaments taking place in new areas of the planet. Our regular Spotlight feature turns the light on Ian Harrison who had a remarkable career in the 50’s and 60’s. We hope you enjoy the article as much as we did meeting up with Ian and listening to some of his experiences. Whether it was in the 1950s or the summer of 2023 when some of our youngsters went to Rio de Janeiro it shows that you never know where playing table tennis will take you. A longer than usual “What was Happening” looks at 2003, which quite unbelievably is 20 years ago but seems like five minutes. The length of this article bears out the old adage “we can remember these events but have trouble with what happened last week!” The Good News page is, well just that, and we are sure you will be happy to know that the 2026 World Team Championships have been awarded to England and will take place in Wembley. In Memoriam sadly records the passing of Sue Collier, Keith Thomas and Stan Clarke, all of whom made enormous contributions to our sport and will be missed. We do not have any guest contributions in this edition – if you have something you would like to write about or if you would like us to tell your story, then please get in touch. We hope you enjoy this edition.
Best wishes Diane and Harvey Webb
