Brief-

ORD International School is to be designed to cater the educational needs of Sector 134, Noida, JAYPEE wish town which is being developed in stages, having basic amenities such as primary schools, parks, nurseries, etc..

The client is keen on taking inspiration from Japanese and Korean schools which focus on the holistic development of students emphasizing on the growth of every student’s intellectual, emotional, social, physical, artistic, creative and spiritual potentials. Specific requirements that the client wishes to be looked after are: • Visually engaging spaces to meet the psychological needs of students and to inspire them to be creative and to learn.

• Adequate storage spaces to store the records of 2200 students.

• Multipurpose spaces to be provided for adaptive re-use.

• Universal accessibility and special facilities for differently-abled students.

• The client is insistent on the building being LEED Platinum and WELL certified.

Concept

1.

Placing the massing block on the site aligning it to the optimum orientation.

Stepping down the level of 3 different blocks, the sourther blockthe lowest for direct sunlight to the bottom floors.

Breaking the block into 3 smaller and less wider masses.

Creating central courtyard spaces for light and ventilation, this way we get 2 separate courtyards, and placement of multipurpose hall

Facade For the school to require as little energy as possible for cooling, we used a combination of tightly integrated passive strategies. We started by orienting the longer axis of our building along the north-south direction, amplifying the amount of daylight entering the classrooms while minimizing the associated heat gain. The incorporation of shaded courtyards amid the built mass and the effective landscaping throughout the site help improve the airflow patterns and reduce the overall site temperature.

Safety and Security The success or failure of any school is predisposed on how well it integrates security and crime prevention through environmental design. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is an approach that focuses on improving the design of the built environment to help reduce opportunities for disputes and violence and promote positive behavior. CPTED aims to ascertain the safety of three assets- people, information and property.

Innovation We developed a system that delivers sunlight to dark spaces with the help of fibre optic cables in the most cost-effective way possible.

• Replacing artificial lighting with natural sunlight reduces the energy cost on the production of greenhouse gases • sunlight is proven to increase productivity by up to 16%.

• These sunlight receiving units can be installed on the roof, terrace, south facade, etc wherever there is unobstructed sunlight Section of the Building- with and wothout the module

Market Potential

Comfort As the major part of heat gain from the openings was catered by the shading design, we focused more on getting the daylight in and so used Air-filled Double glazed unit with high VLT and low U-value.

The optimization for the people’s adaptive thermal comfort leads us to operate the air conditioners at floating set points. Based on our study of the Indian Model for Adaptive thermal comfort for mixed mode buildings, we derived an hourly thermal comfort band for the entire year. This band gives a range of acceptable indoor operative temperatures for the specific context of Noida.

For our design, we have adopted the IMAC comfort model specified in the NBC. This model recognises that thermal comfort depends on the occupants’ context and varies with local outdoor environment conditions.

The IMAC model considers the above factors and recommends the range in which Indoor Operative Temperature (IOT) should lie for achieving thermal comfort. IOT is considered the most suitable index for assessing the comfort range as it encompasses the heat gains due to the surface and the occupants and also the heat dissipated by various equipment.

Site Analysis The site is a triangular shaped space right beside the Purana Qila. The site is right next to very busy Mathura road that connects it to major parts of delhi. The site is benifited by being at a very prime location and has proximity to historical places like Purana Qila, Manazil Mazjid, Sunder Nursery and places like Crafts Museum, Natinal Science Centre, National Zoo and Lutyens Delhi which increses the footfall of that region. It is a contoured site alongside the lake being contoured towards the lake and is covered by trees from all three sides

BriefTo design a plotted house for 2 families including 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 1 child in the given site of 18m x 7m Family60-65 aged grandparents (mostly spending time at the home) Husband and wife both in their 40’s, husband being software engineer and wife being an designer. The child is a boy teenager of age 16 Second family also similar in size 8 plots are merged into one to create 28+ residential units.

The building block comprises of 7 floors in total with provision for parking on the ground floor that is made as stilt floor. All the floors are similar and have 2 types of unit design each of 82sqm and consisting of 3 bedrooms, a hall, dining, kitchen and 2 washrooms.

Each unit and room in it is served with proper natural light and ventilation facing the main road (the front main road and the sector road) and enjoys the luxury of a wrap-around balcony. The balconies have been altered to sides to maintain privacy from the road and from another unit, which enhances the usability and field of view of the user.

The units are connected with a central spine corridor which also serves as a common community space for recreation with a view of the main road.

We made a lounge chair and a side table using cardboard. For stability and strength, we used cylindrical cardboard pipes placed closely together under the seating space and to support the back. Similarly for the side table too. The chair has space for storage under the foot area.

Brief: For this exercise, we had to study the measurement of a human individual and the movements of a person by studying anthropometrics and then applying that to create a piece of furniture made out of waste cardboard. Anthropometry refers to the measurement of the human individual. An early tool of physical anthropology has been used for identification, to understand human physical variation.

The design was made very similar to give a sleek look and to minimize the waste from the cardboard the entire furniture was made from one single piece. Folding and joinery by slits as strategies were used to make the furniture, for structure and stability hollow cylindrical cardboard were used to hold the upper flap of the table. In this way, it has space below as well as on the above.

About

ClimateLaunchpad is a climate and cleantech-focused start-up competition successfully running in 35 countries and growing, and has been developed by ClimateKIC, the largest innovation initiative of the European Union.

Brief: This competition was an extension to the solar decathlon India competition and we got a chance to enter into this in the student starter category because of the innovation aspect in the earlier competition. The whole idea for these workshops was to turn an idea into a start-up. Our product that was the fibre optic lamps was designed to bring natural daylight-like light in spaces with scarcity which will not only save the cost which is generated from lighting a bulb but will also create a natural ambiance, affecting the psychological well-being of a person’s mind.

The beneficial climate impacts for this wereLess energy consumption and energy loads and usage of electricity; which will initially reduce the bill. Natural and cleaner alternative, Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by making power on-site with renewables and other climate-friendly energy resources and our product is a shear example for one.

Impact of energy usage on climate- Industry’s use of fossil fuels has been blamed for warming the climate. When coal, gas, and oil are burnt, they release harmful gases, which trap heat in the atmosphere and cause global warming. Renewable sources of electricity will help reduce that and cause a less negative impact on climate.

‘ The Tree of Life’ Jali in the Mosque made and rendered by hand

Sidi Saiyyed mosque is one of the most well-known mosques if Ahmedabad, and its famous ‘Tree of Life Jali’ is done on semi-circular arch window has come to symbolize the city and its grandeur. Out of eight jail adored windows, five are divided into smaller squares of openwork stone with extremely stylized geometric and floral patterns.
