The Department of Health urges members of the public who experience suspected symptoms of Mpox disease (formerly known as Monkey) to visit their nearest healthcare provider for screening and testing to ensure early diagnosis and effective treatment to prevent further spread of the disease.
The country has recorded the second laboratory-confirmed case of Mpox disease, an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus with the potential to cause a painful or itchy rash like pimples or blisters.
The new patient is the 39-year-old male who was admitted at Addington Hospital in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal without travel history to countries and regions currently experiencing the outbreak of the disease.
The department working closely with the province and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) have activated contract tracing and case finding to identify and assess people who have been in contact with the patient to prevent further transmission, especially at a household and community level.
This will also assist to establish if the second case was in contact with the first case confirmed in Gauteng earlier this month.
According to the World Health Organization multi-country outbreak of Mpox, a total of 466 laboratory-confirmed cases of mpox and three deaths from 22 countries were reported globally in March 2024, illustrating that low-level transmission continues across the world.
The most affected regions are the WHO African Region, the European Region, the Region of the Americas, the Western Pacific Region, and the South-East Asia Region.
In the African Region, the Democratic Republic of the Congo reports the highest number of confirmed positive cases, which represent just over a tenth of the suspected (clinically compatible) cases and deaths reported.
Stigma and discrimination may prolong a disease outbreak by stopping people from coming forward for information or seeking testing or care, which undermines public health efforts.
Thus, we urge the public and communities to support those who tested positive for Mpox to take treatment and those with suspected symptoms to go for screening and testing instead of discriminating against. For more information about Mpox click here.
South Africa is currently experiencing the annual influenza (flu) season which started in the week of 22 April 2024, and a number of flu strains are circulating causing severe health complications in some patients.
This has been confused with COVID-19 variant which has been in circulation with low level of transmissibility and severity.
The most commonly detected and circulating influenza subtype and lineage are A(H1N1) pdm09 previously known as “swine flu” because it was causing disease in pigs, followed by influ-
enza B/Victoria and influenza A(H3N2).
This is not unusual as influenza A(H1N1) pdm09 has been circulating each season as one of the annual seasonal influenza strains since 2010. Influenza A virus is more severe in adults.
About 8 -10% of patients hospitalised for pneumonia and 25% of patients with flu-like illness (fever and cough) will test positive for influenza during the flu season in South Africa.
According to the NICD surveillance data, the numbers of influenza cases and positivity rates are increasing rapidly, but the transmission and impact remain at a moderate level of activity for both outpatient and hospitalised cases.
This means that while there is a lot of influenza circulating, it is still within the expected range for a normal influenza season.
Influenza may cause severe illness leading to hospitalisation or possibly death, especially among those who are at risk of severe influenza illness or complications.
High-risk groups include pregnant women
(including 6 weeks after delivery), individuals living with HIV, those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, lung disease, tuberculosis, heart disease, renal disease, and obesity, the elderly (aged≥ 65 years) and children <2 years old.
These groups of people are strongly encouraged to receive the influenza vaccine available freely at public health clinics or at a cost from privately healthcare providers and through pharmacies.
Ideally the influenza vaccine should be administered prior to the start of the influenza season because it takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop following vaccination, but it is not too late for people to get it to protect themselves and their loved ones against these viruses.
Non-pharmaceutical interventions such as covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, enough ventilation, regular handwash with water and soap/sanitiser can help to minimise the spread of the disease.

Foto's: David Howburgh
On 22 May 2024, the Executive Mayor of West Coast District Municipality, Alderman Boffie Strydom, tabled the budget of the district municipality for the next three financial years as well as the Medium-Term Revenue and Expenditure Framework.
Local government and municipalities across South Africa are struggling to remain financially sustainable during these tough economic times. Only twelve municipalities in the Western Cape, of which West Coast District Municipality is one, are categorized as being financially stable.
• Given all these challenges and taking into account the various unfunded mandates; and that municipalities in the Western Cape are operating without an own revenue source; I am indeed privileged to present a well-balanced- and funded budget to you today" said the Executive Mayor.
• The municipality's revised Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and the tabled budget gives effect to the municipalities Strategic Objectives. These objectives are:
• Care for the social well-being, safety, health and environmental integrity of all our communities;
• Promote regional economic growth and tourism;
• Co-ordinating and promote the development of bulk and essential services and transport infrastructure;
• Foster sound relationships with all stake-holders, especially local Municipalities; and
• Maintain Financial Viability and Good Governance.
The municipality's proposed Capital Budget for the tabled 2024/2025 MTREF is R 10 500 000. Increases in tariffs for Fire Fighting and Internal Audit function were recommended while Environmental Health Services remain a service which the municipality will render to communities across the West Coast.
The Executive Mayor thanked all Councilors for their commitment and hard work.
"Irrespective of our political affiliation or differences we remained committed to the collective cause of WCDM. Be assured that as the Executive Mayor I will do all in my power to keep the collective strong," said the Executive Mayor.
He also expressed his appreciation to the administration under leadership of the Municipal Manager, David Joubert, for ensuring the tabling of a funded, credible- and well-balanced budget.

Art and Adventure lovers alert! The secret is out – the Swartland is where it is hip and happening. Sandwiched between the West Coast and the Cape Winelands, in Cape Town’s backyard, it is the perfect choice if you are of an impulsive nature. An hour’s drive, and you could be attending an art exhibition, sky dive, hike, bike or simply indulge in whatever seasonal scope the countryside has on offer. And of course, no harm in checking out the local food and wine scene.
Investing in Culture Capital has become a fine art, if you’ll excuse the pun. The Swartland towns of Yzerfontein, Darling, Malmesbury, Moorreesburg, Koringberg and the Riebeek Valley provide a canvas for artists – the landscapes, the colors, the unhurriedness, the clear air, sun-sets and -rises have a way of translating itself through brush, clay, cameras, poetry and theatre. No wonder artists are flocking to the region to make nest. So here is how not to miss out.
Culinary Art | Sourdough Bread Baking Class at Moorrees Deli, Moorreesburg – 8 June Bread-baking legend, Carien Hugo Waring from Moorrees Deli, takes you through the paces in a half-day bread baking course. This woman is a phenomenal bread-baker. Imagine, she has kept her live culture (yeast) alive for a period of xx years! So, this winter, if you want to curry favour with your housemates, impress them with the smell of freshly baked bread, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Swoon-worthy. Beware – once sliced and buttered, there may not be leftovers for the next day!
For adrenaline junkies | The Berg River Canoe Marathon 3-6 July
If you live in the Cape, have heard of but never participated or supported the annual Berg River Canoe Marathon, here is a chance to put things right. The canoe marathon spans an impressive 240 km from Paarl to the small harbor of Velddrif. On the 3rd, the first leg stops at Zonquasdrift, the low water bridge that spans the Berg in Riebeek Kasteel. The Zonquas were the first inhabitants of the region that today sees wheat, canola, citrus, pomegranate and vineyards on the banks of the river. Bring a picnic hamper, and other forms of fortitude as you wave a welcome to the canoeists. The next pit stop is at Moorreesburg. Still have a chance to enter!
Art Weekend | Solo Studios at Riebeek Kasteel, 9-11 August
Get this. A day- or weekend pass that takes
you to 7 Galleries/Group Exhibitions, 17 resident Artists’ Studios and 9 in-studio Collaborations over the course of the long weekend. Not to mention the guided Art Walkabouts, featured Long Table dining experiences, paired with local wine producers. All set in picturesque Riebeek Kasteel. Women’s day is celebrated on the 9th – I cannot think of a better way to spend it. Heaps of accommodation to suit all budgets, and 20 restaurants to cater to all ages, budgets and preferences, including Vegan.
The Swartland is a playground for outdoor and adventure enthusiasts. And it need not cost an arm and a leg. By the way, did you know that the expression was coined by artists who would charge more for portraits if it involved painting a second arm or a leg? Anyway, jot these in your calendar, add it to your bucket list, and make sure you put off all other obligations.
On your Marks, get Set, Go | PPC Berg Marathon, Riebeek West - 17 August
Popular on the road runners’ calendar, the 36th PPC Berg Marathon returns a little later this year (ran in July 2023). The organizers have kindly factored in the rains and later sunrise for those who may consider these two as prohibiting factors. With a choice between a distance of 42,2km, 21,1km, 10km and 5km, stalwarts and beginners are sure to enjoy the camaraderie that reigns on this occasion. Food stalls, music and a chance to enjoy the fresh country air, with views of the Kasteelberg as backdrop, are reason enough to either enter or be entertained.
Howdy Cowboys and -girls| Swartland AgriCulture Show, Moorreesburg -4-7 September
The idea of an agriculture show conjures up pictures in my mind of the Western movies. However, the Swartland Agriculture Show, the largest agricultural show in the Western and Southern Cape, is a scientific feat, technology and passion the bedmates for what has become the hallmark of farmers in our era today. Celebrating its 90th edition, with an average of about 20,000 annual visitors, the Show inspires, educates and delights. It is also a marvel to see the close cooperation between community and business. Bring the family and let the horses, cattle, sheep, machinery worth R230 million, world-class championships, a regional youth show amaze you. And if that were not enough, agricultural seminars, Ladies' Day, entertainment, a variety of exhibitors, the wine garden, restaurants and children's entertainment should do the trick.

So, Sondag se wedstryd weg teen Gordons-
