CROESO

Good evening

Cymru South

University FC

Earlier in the University soundly defeated at Carmarthen on the hottest day of the year so it is an opportunity this evening for the home team to reverse that result and gain a much needed win.

It is coming down to the last six games of the season and the University team remain in a perilous position in the relegation zone Recent performances have seen the team look far stronger defending but continue to create and not take their chances at the top end of the field

Whilst discipline has been good throughout the season the same cannot be said about the number of injuries the squad have suffered from. Again this evening we have lost three players from last week and currently have a number of the squad unavailable. Hopefully the position will improve over the next few weeks.

Following this evening`s game we have another home local derby next Friday the 17th March against Afan Lido.

Enjoy the game.

CLUB HISTORY

Swansea University has a Welsh League heritage dating back to the 1960s, when under its previous guise as the University College Swansea, the Club played at the highest level of Welsh football for nearly 2 decades. The University first entered the Welsh League in the 1966-67 season and incredibly won Division 2 in that season, sealing promotion to Division 1 at the first time of asking At that time there were also 3 divisions, the Premier Division, Division 1 and Division 2. The students of Swansea continued to impress in the 1967-68 season by finishing runners up in Division 1 to seal promotion to the Premier Division in just 2 seasons – a meteoric rise in similar fashion to the modern-day Swansea University team

Unfortunately, the club’s stay in the Welsh League Premier Division was short lived and they were relegated at the end of the 1968-69 season but bounced back the following season as Champions of Division 1 Following another relegation in 1971-72, Swansea University stabilized in Division 1 until 1978, when they suffered a drop into Division 2

The club competed in the third tier of the Welsh League until 1985, when sadly it fell out of the league leading to a 32-year exodus which ended in 2017 with the return of the University to the higher levels of the Welsh football pyramid

The Swansea University team of yesteryear prospered and offered a platform for Swansea students to enjoy a high level of football whilst studying in South West Wales These guiding principles underpinned the resurrection of league football at Swansea University in 2011. Team Swansea was started by a group of forward looking students, but not even the founding members could have predicted the second meteoric rise of the University team which has seen it return to the Welsh League

CLUB HISTORY

Only in its 6th season, the Club is still in its infancy but has had its fair share of silverware in that time 4 promotions, 2 Gwalia Cups, 1 Senior Cup and an unforgettable 10-0 win in the final of the West Wales Cup in 2015. The pinnacle of the club’s achievement was sealing the Swansea League Championship and West Wales Cup double in May 2017. Which secured a historic return to the Welsh League

The first season back in the Welsh League in the 2017-18 campaign was a stunning success. Promotion to Division 2 was sealed with 3 games to spare as the University clinched the Welsh League Division 3 title with an emphatic 4-0 win away at Caerau FC in Maesteg. To cap off a fine season of football, the club not only won the title by playing some remarkable football, they also claimed the Division 3 FAW Fair Play Award, proving that it is possible to win with style, grace and outstanding discipline The remarkable journey continued the following season when once again, under the guidance of Dafydd Evans and Wyn Thomas, promotion to the new tier 2 JD Cymru South was achieved through finishing runners-up in Welsh League Division 2 An outstanding disciplinary record once again saw the University top the Division 2 FAW Fair Play table

Despite being tipped to struggle in the new JD Cymru Championship South, the squad once again showed great quality and resilience and played some fantastic football. The title was secured after 25 matches when Covid 19 brought the 2019-20 season to an end with the Club once again topping the Fair Play league table Promotion to the JD Cymru Premier League was denied as a Tier 1 License was not awarded but this was subsequently achieved during the aborted 2020-21 campaign

Welcome and good evening / Croeso a Noson

It has been a delayed start to 2023 for our u16’s with weather postponements through most of January and early February.

The group exited the West Wales Cup at the end of January after a thrilling 6-5 loss to Tenby AFC, the game was end to end with goals in the first half from Jake Ferguson and Connor McFadden and the group showed great resilience to take the game to extra time after being 4-2 down in the 85th minute, substitute Cian Kilduff scored an excellent free kick before Jake Ferguson got his 2nd of the game form the penalty spot. There were a further 30 minutes of football and the game didn’t show any signs of slowing down and a Deian Harding-Thomas goal wasn’t enough to force the game to penalties. We wish Tenby AFC the best of luck in the quarter finals.

We returned to league action against Pontardawe Town in February in another goal fest This fixture was a great indicator of where the group have come from having faced Pontardawe on the opening day of the season and losing 4-1 that day. With 2 goals from Jake Ferguson and 3 from Connor McFadden our u16’s took all 3 points in a 5-4 victory

This group of players have been able to reap the rewards of their hard work and commitment in which they have put in over the season and its clear how much they have development since that opening day fixture.

we continue to look to the future and the importance of building a pathway to the first team via our youth section, over the past 4 weeks we have seen both Jake Ferguson and Zac Williams from our u16’s step up to train with the first team

We are excited to grow our youth section next season with acceptance into the FAW u18’s South League for the 2023/24season.

Good luck to the lads this evening

Thanks / Diolch
