Blackwall Reach Mayor of London Sadiq Khan visits Blackwall Reach
It was fantastic to welcome Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to The Reach community hub at Blackwall Reach on Wednesday 9 February (2022). Mr Khan was visiting the centre as a guest of the Osmani Trust to learn more about their work. The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs was also in attendance. The Osmani Trust is a youth and community organisation based in Tower Hamlets that runs community health and sporting initiatives locally, including from The Reach. The Mayor was interested to see how the Trust’s work transforms young lives, steering them away from crime. Our Customer Involvement and Community Development (CICD) team helped to facilitate the Mayor’s visit, in conjunction with the Trust. Swan is hoping to partner with the Osmani Trust in delivering its vital work on our Blackwall Reach estate.
“Irrespective of the four walls here at Osmani Trust’s Youth Space at The Reach, the relationships between young people and youth workers are key to ensuring every young person’s starting point is acknowledged and their needs put first. “Mentoring alongside a broad range of activities instils in young people the values they need to flourish in their communities and society. High scores for Blackwall Reach Considerate Constructors scheme We are really proud that our NU living construction team, who are building phase 2 of Blackwall Reach, has achieved an ‘Exceptional’ rating by assessors from the ‘Considerate Constructors’ scheme, with a score of 46/50. Continued from page 1 The Considerate Constructors scheme encourages best practice in the construction industry. It highly rated the site’s health and safety approach, care for the environment, site appearance, community interaction and the steps taken to create a healthy workforce. The team also gained several ‘Innovation’ points for projects that are being implemented above and beyond the expectations of the scheme. Here’s some of what our construction team have been doing to get such great results: •

Improving the appearance of the site by regularly updating the hoarding, making sure it is clean and graffiti-free, planting flowers and plants around the site office and wildflowers on unused site land to benefit the local environment. Increasing safety on and off site, implementing better lighting around the vehicle entrances and increasing visibility of traffic marshals.

Improving the health and wellbeing of site workers throughout the pandemic, making sure there is enough break-out space with fresh air and including a new heated outdoor lunch area on site.

Regeneration update Station Square (Phase 1B of Blackwall Reach) The tenants for units 1 and 2 of the commercial space have signed their lease and are in the process of fitting out the unit as a local convenience store specialising in organic food and drink. This is the second business they have opened in East London following their successful space in Clapton. The store will be open by summer 2022. Parkside West (Phase 2 of Blackwall Reach) Great progress is being made on Phase 2 of Parkside West. The hand laid brick to C1 and D is approaching the fifth floor and internally there are kitchens and bathrooms being installed. The apartments are at the electrical second fix stage, which means lighting and power is being installed and plumbing fixtures are being connected.
Blocks C2 and C3 maisonette entrances are being formed with bespoke benches, ready for front doors, windows and a unique tiling design to be installed in the coming months. Internally, the team continue to erect internal wall partitions and installation of the electrical wiring and plumbing. Bespoke concrete planters are being set around each of the new blocks. This phase is now connected up to the Blackwall-wide district heating network, which means we will be turning on the heating in the next quarter. Taxonomy of Joy update As you may know, Swan has commissioned Bow Arts Trust and Make:Good collective to deliver a community-led art project to be installed on the Millennium Green as part of the rejuvenated landscape. Since the project began in 2020, Make:Good have held events and delivered workshops with residents of Blackwall Reach to explore what brings you joy about where you live. These included: •
Discovery Day - a weekend in October 2021 where all residents were invited to join in model making, explore installations made to bring joy, and eat together.

Workshops with Woolmore School - Make:Good held workshops with students and parents on what brings them joy in Blackwall.
•
‘Zine workshop held in the new café, Dock Coffee, on Phase 1B.
•
Joining classes held in The Reach, including women’s exercise classes, sewing classes and London Tigers after-school club
Thank you to everyone who took part in these sessions. The designs for the public artwork are now being developed. These will then be submitted to Tower Hamlets planning team for approval. It is expected that the first of the art pieces will be installed later this year.
Hard hat visits This summer, all existing residents moving into Phase 2 and new buyers on the project will be given ‘hard hat tours’ of their new property to get a feel for the space, the view, and so that they can measure up for furniture. Chai ‘N’ Chat
Preservation Culture workshops Do you enjoy cooking but are often left with food waste? We’re hosting workshops about how we can be mindful about how we use food. Hosted in partnership with Preservation Culture, participants learn how to turn leftover ingredients into jams, chutneys and pickles. This is a great a new skill that you could even turn into a business.
Swan, in partnership with with Blackwall Reach Residents’ Board committee members, recently facilitated a ‘Chai ‘n’ Chat’ community coffee morning at The Reach community hub on Tuesday 8 February. It was a great opportunity for customers who were feeling isolated to reconnect with their neighbours. More than 40 people came along to the event, which was hosted by Nasima and Suraiya.

Holiday Hunger Help This Easter, Swan in Partnership with Feeding Britain, London Tigers and Woolmore Primary School will be running a Holiday Hunger Programme for families in Tower Hamlets. Open to young people aged 6-18 years old, the four-hourlong daily sessions at The Reach community hub will provide fun, physical activities as well as a free, nutritious meal for all attendees. Swan, ব্ল্যাকওয়াল রিচ রেসিডেন্টস ব�োর্ড কমিটির সদস্যদের সাথে অংশীদারিত্বে, সম্প্রতি 8 ফেব্রুয়ারি মঙ্গলবার দ্য রিচ কমিউনিটি হাবে একটি 'চায় 'এন' চ্যাট' (‘Chai ‘n’ Chat’) কমিউনিটি কফি মর্নিং আয়�োজন করেছে। যে গ্রাহকরা একাকী ব�োধ করছিলেন তাদের প্রতিবেশীদের সাথে পুনরায় সংয�োগ করার জন্য এটি একটি দুর্দান্ত সুয�োগ ছিল। নাসিমা ও সুরাইয়া দ্বারা হ�োস্ট করা এই অনুষ্ঠানে 40 জনেরও বেশি ল�োক এসেছিলেন।

আমরা কীভাবে খাবার ব্যবহার করি সে সম্পর্কে আমরা কীভাবে সচেতন হতে পারি সে সম্পর্কে ওয়ার্কশপ আয়োজন করছি। প্রিজার্ভেশন কালচার-এর সাথে অংশীদারিত্বে আয়োজিত ওয়ার্কশপে, অংশগ্রহণকারীরা শেখেন কীভাবে বেঁচে যাওয়া উপাদানগুলিকে জ্যাম, চাটনি ও আচারে পরিণত করতে হয়। এটি একটি দুর্দান্ত নতু ন দক্ষতা যেটিকে আপনি এমনকি একটি ব্যবসাতেও পরিণত করতে পারেন।
