Members enjoy 10 monthly meetings each year that feature a speaker, continental breakfast, and a chance to socialize with other members. Guests are welcome to attend one OLLI monthly meeting without a charge. This gives a non-member a chance to check our program out. If an individual comes more then once they would need to join OLLI, or pay a $10 fee per meeting.

The SVSU-OLLI program was established in September, 2001. Since then, we have grown to over 1900 members! Members of our 50+ program come from throughout the mid-Michigan area.

Does Structural Heart Disease Affect You? Presenter: Debbie Best, MSN, RN Covenant Center for Heart Structural Heart Coordinator

Structural heart disease usually refers to cardiac defects which are congenital in nature, but it may also include abnormalities of the valves and vessels of the heart wall that develop with wear and tear. The Covenant Center for the Heart offers minimally invasive procedures for inoperable or high-risk heart patients.

In this presentation you will learn about three of these new procedures: the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), the MitraClip, and the Watchman. Our presenter will be Debbie Best. She has been a registered nurse for 24 years and has a master’s degree from SVSU in education and informatics. She has worked in critical care and education, and has taught for both Delta College and SVSU.

SVSU-OLLI Interest Groups Over the years, we have learned that people join OLLI for two major reasons. The first is the opportunity to learn new things and travel; but a secondary, and sometimes more important reason, is the opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests. Our Interest Groups bring together members who have similar interests or hope to meet others socially.

From time to time we hear that our members would like to start a new Interest Group. The first step of the process is to find a group leader.

Wednesday, October 12, 2016 The University of Arizona’s Richard F. Caris Mirror Laboratory

Presenter: Jerry Scott, Lab Volunteer & Retired Engineer

A few years ago as part of an OLLI trip we toured the mirror lab in Tucson. It was so interesting that we thought the general membership would like to learn about it. At the lab a team of scientists and engineers make giant, lightweight mirrors of unprecedented power for a new generation of optical and infrared telescopes. These mirrors represent a radical departure from the conventional solid-glass mirrors used in the past. Last November they completed a year-long project and brought the world’s largest telescope, called the Giant Magellan Telescope, to a mountaintop in northern Chile. It has 10 times the resolution of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Our presenter, Jerry Scott, has volunteered at the lab and Kitt Peak National Observatory for 15 years. He is a retired electrical engineer who lives half the year in Saline, Michigan and the other half in Tucson.

Wednesday, November 9, 2016 Autonomous Cars: Past, Present and Future

Presenter: Ali Maleki, Executive Director of Innovations & New Ventures, Nexteer The automotive industry is undergoing significant changes which will provide vastly new and different mobility options that will impact every aspect of our lives. This talk will include an introduction to autonomous vehicles, a review of the history of the self-driving vehicles, the important factors in the evolution of these systems, near term configuration of vehicles, a few alternative scenarios for the future of mobility, and the long-term effects of autonomous cars.

Alli Maleki has been in the automotive and truck electronics industry since 1988. He has developed software and hardware in nearly all automotive and heavy-duty truck electronics areas, and has led engineering teams in large corporations and small startups.

SVSU Football Game and Tailgate Saturday, October 29, 2016 The fall season wouldn’t be complete without our annual tailgate and SVSU football game. Join us as we cheer on the Cardinals as they battle the Lake Erie Storm. Our package includes general admission tickets to the game and also a tailgate-style lunch prior to the game. The tailgate will run from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. and the game starts at 3 p.m. As the University no longer offers complimentary tickets to the game we will have to charge a fee this year. Please register no later than October 20 so we have a food count. NonMembers and family members are welcome to join you. You will receive a letter about one week prior to the game with the location of the tailgate. Please register by October 20.

Fall 2016 - Day Trips (08) Historic Marshall’s 53rd Annual Home Tour

Join us on what AAA Living Magazine calls the best “Historic Home Tour” in the state of Michigan. Each year on the weekend after Labor Day, the city of Marshall opens its doors to thousands of visitors. In addition to touring seven historic homes, one church and one business, you can stroll the tree-lined streets, listen to musical entertainment, visit an arts & crafts show, and visit the town’s historic museum.

Although we’ll provide motorcoach transportation to Marshall, you’ll use the tour’s shuttle buses to take you from home to home. Your day will begin with a three-course lunch at Schuler’s Restaurant, which is celebrating 107 years of operation. Our package includes admission to the home tour, lunch, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. Saturday: September 10 from 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

(09) Come Hungry, Leave Happy: Eastern Market Food Crawl

In this Detroit walking & coach-tour led by Feet on the Street Tours, you will stroll from shed to shed at the Eastern Market and visit specialty stores to learn about the unique products, hear fun facts and history of the area, while going behind the scenes and sampling various foods. You’ll enjoy eating locally produced pizza, popcorn, pickles, produce, pastries, sausages, sweets, nuts, cheese, and more. You’ll get to know local establishments and learn about the continual revitalization of this area while eating your way through the Market district. The afternoon will include a narrated bus tour of the Market District, including public art, the Dequindre Cut greenway, the Detroit International Riverwalk and the Brush Park historic neighborhood. Before heading for home we’ll return to the Eastern Market for more goodies, including fruit and ice cream. The tour includes the tours, food throughout the day, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. Tuesday: September 13 from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

(10) Henry Ford Museum, Ford Rouge Factory Tour & the Beatles!

Join us on a trip to the amazing Henry Ford Museum. Our day will begin with a tour of the Ford Rouge Factory. You’ll walk through a real-life truck plant and view one of the world’s largest “living roofs.” Then we’re off to the museum where you will have the balance of the day to explore. From race cars to freedom rides, modular houses to microprocessors, the wide-ranging exhibits at the Museum bring you face to face with real things that have the power to inspire, inform and engage you. Our package also includes admission to The Magical History Tour, a special Beatles memorabilia exhibit which includes instruments, clothing, rare original photos and many neverbefore-displayed artifacts. (11) Detroit Architectural Tour With Hugh Gershon

This day trip will provide a physical orientation and basis for additional discussion for a four-session class which is being offered beginning on October 29 (see page 11 for information on the class). Both the day trip and class will be led by OLLI member and retired architect Hugh Gershon. Our first stops will be Belle Isle, the Eastern Market and Lafayette Park. Then we head to lunch at Traffic Jam and Snug. After lunch, we’ll do a walking tour which will include Fort Pontchartrain’s 1701, or Fort Detroit and several prominent tall buildings. We will look at some of the important Detroit districts and neighborhoods, stop at Cass Park, and return via Woodward Avenue to view the Fisher Building and Cadillac Place. This trip will require walking for a few blocks at a time. The trip includes a three-course lunch and motorcoach transportation.

(12) Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder at the Fisher Getting away with murder can be so much fun, and there is no better proof than this hilarious hit show that won the 2014 Tony Award for best musical. Gentleman’s Guide tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, an heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by eliminating the eight pesky relatives who stand in his way...and be done for tea! (13) Georges Bizet’s Carmen at the Detroit Opera House Carmen seduces audiences with its celebrated music and smokin’ title character. Carmen’s sensuousness captivates all who meet her, and though she is a pawn of fate, she effortlessly leads a lowly corporal and a suave bullfighter into a bitter rivalry for her affection. Every beloved melody, from the Habanera to the Gypsy Song, blazes anew. Her shimmering voice bewitched Broadway as Mary Poppins. Now Ashley Brown joins the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jeff Tyzik for great American song and music that makes memories. You’ll enjoy selections from names that built the American songbook including Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and contemporary classics from Disney and beyond. Our day will begin with the amazing lunch buffet at the Motor City Casino. Then we’re off to Orchestra Hall for the 3 p.m. performance. (15) Wicked at the MSU Wharton Theatre

Winner of 35 major awards, including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards, Wicked is the untold story of the witches of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of how these unlikely friends become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. (16) Fun Home at the Fisher

Every once in awhile a Broadway musical comes along that surprises, moves and excites audiences in ways only a truly landmark musical can. Fun Home was the winner of five Tony Awards in 2013 including best musical. It is based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir which introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood. The New York Times said it was a “refreshingly honest musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.” Our day will begin with a three-course lunch at Traffic Jam and Snug followed by the 2 p.m. matinee. (17) A Christmas Carol at Meadow Brook Theatre Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a viewing of this Charles Dickens holiday classic. For the 35th year in a row, Meadow Brook Theatre will perform this holiday classic about a mean-spirited miser and the ghosts that haunt him.

While waiting for the curtain to rise, carolers will entertain you. Our day will begin with a chance to do a little holiday shopping at Nino Salvaggio’s in Troy. Then we’re off to a three-course lunch at Loccino’s in Troy, followed by the 2 p.m. matinee. Our package includes tickets to the show, lunch, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. (18) DSO - Home for the Holidays

Share Detroit’s favorite, best-selling holiday musical tradition with fellow OLLI members and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. You’ll thrill to the spectacle of the season at this sparkling celebration which will include carols and classics for the season. And yes, Virginia, there will be a Santa Claus! Michelle Merrill will be the conductor and Doug LaBrecque will be the featured vocalist. We’ll attend the 10:45 a.m. performance which includes free coffee and donuts. After the performance we’ll head to Texas de Brazil, a Brazilian steakhouse which offers a very unique dining experience. (19) Beautiful - The Carole King Musical at the Fisher This new musical tells the inspiring story of Carole King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit song writing team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. Songs will include I Feel the Earth Move, One Fine Day, You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman, You’ve Got a Friend, and the title song Beautiful. This is your chance to learn more about OLLI and SVSU. You’ll meet the OLLI staff and advisory board members and also take a tour of the SVSU campus. Although there is no cost for the orientation and tour, you must register so we know how many to expect.

Fall 2016 Classes fall of industry and the economy. The third class will focus on neighborhoods and their architecture including, Palmer Woods, Lafayette Park, and others. The final session will look at architects and some of the buildings that have left a mark on Detroit, including Albert & Julius Khan, Kamper, Mason, Rowland, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Roe, and Yamasaki. Building examples include The Penobscot, Guardian, The Fisher Building, Auto Manufacturing Plants, and more.

This fast moving class will be led by OLLI member and retired architect Hugh Gershon.

Science, Architecture & Geography Beneath the Surface: Dinosaur CSI (101)

Midland paleontologist, author and storyteller “PaleoJoe” (Joseph Kchodl) will take you on a trip back in time to learn about the victims and perpetrators of the Dinosaur Age. You will learn the techniques used in the investigation of how these creatures lived and died, see the evidence, and discover the stories that are told through Dinosaur CSI. The class will begin with an introduction to fossils and the fossils of Michigan, and continue through the Age of the Dinosaurs.

Examples of actual fossils will be brought to class and PaleoJoe will also discuss his recent “bone hunting” trips. PaleoJoe will make this class entertaining and fun. He performs throughout the U.S. for K-12 students, adult and college-level audiences.

Ready or Not: Variable Weather & Climate Change (103)

Looking for a class on a topic which has almost universal interest? Yes, weather news has such appeal. In this class we will consider science basics of meteorology and apply the information to our Michigan experience. We will focus on factors which create weather and weather patterns typical for our temperate zone. Included are temperature, air pressure, moisture, radiant heating and cooling, winds, cloud types, global atmospheric circulation, and oceanic influences. Forecasting and prediction are pertinent topics as well. Finally, we will assess what weather may be like as predicted climate changes unfold. We will use a series of lectures entitled, Meteorology: An Introduction to the Wonders of the Weather as one resource, along with several weather books.

Understanding Detroit: An Architectural Retrospective (102) To get the most out of this class you are strongly encouraged to also sign up for the September 24 day trip listed on page 7.

That trip will provide a physical orientation and basis for what will be discussed in the class. The first session will cover the geography and history of Detroit beginning in the late 1600s and early architecture and contributions of many important individuals of the past, including Joliet, Cadillac, Lernoult, Wayne, Hamtramck, Woodward and Cass.

The second class will move into the present with a review of many buildings and structures that have been razed due to the rise and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The Forensics of Famous Crimes (104) The Biology of Aging (106) This class will look at the forensic evidence associated with famous crimes past and present. The cases discussed will include Jack the Ripper, The Black Dahlia, JonBenet Ramsey, the O.J. Simpson trial, and many more. Case summaries will be presented, followed by a discussion of the criminal investigation that followed. The class will be led by Elaine Dougherty, a forensic scientist with the Michigan State Police Bridgeport Lab who is also an adjunct professor for the SVSU criminal justice program. Note: some graphic photos may be shown during the class.

The Islands of the Great Lakes (105)

Just how many islands to you think there are in the Great Lakes? Are they special, and if so, how? Why are deer such a problem on islands and why are some islands loaded with snakes? In this class you will find answers to these questions and more during a lake-by-lake survey of the islands of the Great Lakes. Dr. Karen Vigmostad has led a Great Lakes islands conservation effort since 1995 and she will share stories of that journey with you. She’ll discuss how she found funds and pulled together experts to better understand and care for these islands into perpetuity. You’ll view photographs and videos and learn the unique characteristics of islands in each of the lakes. You’ll come to understand why the conservation of island bio-diversity is key to island health and ours.

Why and how do we age? Exactly what changes typically occur in the human body as it grows older? How can we slow or prevent some of these changes from happening?

Discovering Essential Oils: Nature’s Best Kept Secret (110)

Introduction to Strength Training (111/112)

Don’t put it off any longer. Here is your chance to begin a strength training program with the support of a trainer in a fun, group atmosphere. Regular strength training can reduce your percentage of body fat, increase your amount of muscle, and increase body density. (Designed for ages 60-94) The senior fitness test (SFT) was designed specifically for seniors over the age of 60 years at the Ruby Gerontology Center at California State University, Fullerton. The test meets scientific standards for reliability and validity. Results for individuals are compared to performance standards based upon over 7,000 men and women, ages 6094. You will participate in eight simple tests: chair stand test, arm curl test, twominute step test, back scratch test, eightfoot up and go test, and Body Mass Index.

You will be tested by undergraduate students enrolled in Kinesiology 372 under the direct supervision of Dr. Jennifer Bridges, Ph.D., Professor of Kinesiology.

Card Making Workshop (135)

Carolyn Johnson is back with another fun greeting card workshop. On the first day, you will make some new cards using the art of iris folding which involves folding papers to create a spiral pattern. In the second class you will make embossed cards using plastic and metal embossing plates. In the last class we will combine rubber stamps, paper punches, and tiny beads to make some unique cards. Mosaics, Glass Fusion & Tape Painting Techniques (137)

The staff at Painterly Pottery in Bay City will be leading this new class which will guide you through creating three unique masterpieces. In the first class you will design your own fused glass artwork. A variety of techniques such as cut, nip and stack, will be demonstrated and the studio will kiln-fire your artwork into one solid piece. In the second class, you will learn “tape painting” techniques for painting pottery. You will make either a bowl, plate or mug and the piece will be kiln-fired. In the final class you will learn about the art form of mosaic design by choosing from hundreds of colorful tiles and beads to create patterns or images for a one of kind piece. Shari Smith has been bringing fine dining to the Great Lakes Bay region for the past 25 years. Her class this fall will have a Victory Garden theme. In the 1940s, the government rationed foods like sugar, butter, meat and eggs. Since there were transportation shortages, citizens were encouraged to grow their own produce. In this unique cooking class you will learn how to cook a variety of items using canned or frozen produce from a garden teamed with ingredients that were available during that time. Changing Broadway Forever: With Candor About Kander and Ebb (146)

The 2002 movie musical Chicago garnered six Oscars and featured an all-star cast including Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger. The evolution of that show from its beginnings on Broadway in 1975, though, is as interesting as the lives of those actors. John Kander and Fred Ebb were the composer and lyricist of that show, as well as many others including Cabaret, Zorba, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. You’ll learn about the lives, shows, and contributions of this legendary Broadway duo in this class led by Keith Spaulding, a retired Frankenmuth teacher.

Literature OLLI Book Club (148)

This fall our first selection is Becoming Nicole, a timely and pertinent non-fiction book by Amy Ellis Nicole about twin boys who were adopted at birth and their journey through questions of gender that would challenge the mother to find ways to help her child. Our second book is the classic The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. He wrote the novel to portray the harsh conditions and exploited lives of immigrants in the U.S. Our final selection is Miscarriage of Justice, a work of fiction by Kip Gayden which is based on the actual events surrounding a 1913 love triangle which ended in murder.

The class is led by OLLI member Kathy McAllister. In addition, book discussions will be led by OLLI members Gail Oliver, and Bev McFarland. The November class will meet in C140.

The Sounds of Chaucer’s English (149) This class is for anyone with an interest in practicing how to read Middle English as Geoffrey Chaucer would have spoken it.

Class time will be spent largely on oral work with emphasis on both accurate pronunciation and expressive delivery. No prior work with either Chaucer or Middle English is required. You should purchase and bring to the first class a copy of The Canterbury Tales in Middle English, not a translation; any edition is acceptable. Our instructor is Dr. Basil Clark, SVSU Professor Emeritus of English.

Music Appreciation: The Beach Boys & Beatles (147)

In this entertaining class we will travel with storyteller Herb Hardy and Mike O’Connell along the California coastline with the Beach Boys and down Abbey Road with the Beatles. Hardy will weave stories about recording techniques, history, economics and the artist’s personal lives. O’Connell tells the same stories in pictures. The first two sessions will cover Brian Wilson and how the most important record producer since Phil Spector disappears at age 25, and his redemption years later. The last two sessions will be on the Fab Four, from the arrival of Sir George Martin until when the wheels fell off with Let it Be. Three Novels by Elizabeth Taylor (151)

No, not that Elizabeth Taylor! Anita Brookner wrote, “It is time that justice was done to Elizabeth Taylor. All her writings could be described as coming into the category of comedy. Comedy is the best vehicle for truths that are too fierce to be borne.” For the first session read A Game of Hide and Seek (328 pages), which concerns a young couple whose romance undergoes a rough separation. Follow that up with Mrs. Palfrey at the Clairmont (205 pages), which describes Mrs. Palfrey’s life in a residential hotel filled with eccentric characters. When she strikes up a friendship with a handsome young writer, her life changes. The final book will be A Wreath of Roses (224 pages) the story of a school secretary and her liaison with a handsome, assured, and dangerous liar. Viruses & How to Clean Your Computer (155)

Computer viruses can destroy computer data, hard drives and make your computer completely non-usable. Knowing how to prevent them and what to do if you get one is essential. In the first half of this class, you will learn about viruses, malware, spyware, and adware. We will discuss various software applications that can help prevent viruses and how to remove viruses once they are on the computer. In the second half of the class, you will learn how to keep your computer running at top speed by cleaning it up and removing excess files. Learn how to remove unwanted programs and how to find and delete old files, temp files, or the garbage left over when downloading programs. The philosophy of Thomas Hobbes presents interesting questions and challenges for those concerned with current politics at home and abroad. The discussion and debate in this class will be through the lens of his book Leviathan, a text banned in England and Europe in the late 17th century and one that provides an intellectual foundation for the modern state. A number of questions will be pursued in this class: Do the benefits of democracy outweigh its disadvantages? When should political order trump rights, equality or individual interest? If government is crucial to prevent chaos on the national level, would we be well advised to promote international government as the best method for securing world peace? Please read chapters 6 and 11 of Leviathan for the first session.

Mindfulness Meditation (170)

History Workshop: Behind Two Iron Curtains

Mindfulness meditation helps us learn to live in the present moment with non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of what is. It helps us to flow more easily with the ups and downs of our lives. It is a practice which helps to create a more peaceful mind and heart open to deeper wisdom. Controlled clinical studies of mindfulness-based meditation have documented reduction of physical and emotional distress and an increase in greater health and well being. Our leader is Nan Spence, who for the past 11 years has studied mindfulness with respected teachers and has been authorized to teach it by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Nan holds a Master’s Degree in Theology with an emphasis in spirituality.

When Elisabeth Thoburn was 11 years old she saw the Berlin Wall for the first time with her father while on summer vacation.

Growing up in East Germany, the Wall had separated her family from freedom for her entire life. Her family was split in half in 1961 when the Wall was built, her father’s relatives were all in the East, and her mother’s relatives were all in the West.

In this unique workshop, Elisabeth will talk about what life was like growing up in East Germany and examine the politics that led to the building of the Berlin Wall as well as the events that led to the end of the Cold War in 1989. She will also compare her experience to the current situation in North Korea and reflect on these two very restrictive societies. John Baesler will provide historical background on the division of Germany post WWII, and Byungil Ahn will discuss how Korea became a divided nation.

History of God: The Meaning of Life (171)

Have you ever thought about the meaning of life, settled on what you think the meaning is, or maybe toyed with the thought that there is no meaning? Well, get ready to survey the greatest philosophical minds of the last 2,500 years and their attempts and suppositions of this fundamental human question.

We will use the Teaching Company’s series The Meaning of Life: Perspectives From the World’s Great Intellectual Traditions, featuring Professor Jay Garfield of Smith College.

We will survey the thoughts from the ancient worlds such as Bhagavad-Gita, Aristotle, Confucius, Stoic adherents, Taoism, Buddhism, into the modern world of Hume, Kant, Tolstoy, Gandhi, The Dalai Lama, etc.

We will plot our course depending on the interest and appetite for this interesting but taxing subject. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.

History & History Boat Cruise Civil War Reconstruction (172)

The Civil War Reconstruction years (18651877) were controversial at their inception and have remained to present. The radical element in the Republican Party was determined to emancipate southern blacks from bondage, to entrench the Party nationally, and to change the South dramatically. Lincoln agreed with these goals, but was more moderate in the means he proposed to achieve them. His assassination by a Confederate supporter set back prospects for a smooth reuniting of the country. During Reconstruction, Southern whites were restricted. When they regained political power, they ensured Democratic Party control and the subjugation of blacks, both of which continued into the past half century. The class will be led by Northwood University professor John Pafford.

Murder and Mayhem: Bay County’s Early Days (173)

Tim Younkmann is back with more stories of murder and other nefarious activities as the lumbering boom reached its zenith in Bay County and then declined. You’ll hear about the Third Street Slasher who slashed the throats of a woman and man in their rented room during the waning days of the boom.

Another story involves an illegal boxing match which led to murder. Then there is the tale of a Bay City clerk who embezzles money and leaves town with his teenage lover in tow, headed for the West Coast. Bay City Police Chief Nathaniel Murphy chases them across the country and employs a posse from San Diego to track them down. Other tales include lumber mill explosions, the first murder conviction in Bay County history, a barber who stabs another barber with his shears, all sorts of stories of disease and maladies including the scourge delivered by the “Spanish Lady.” Tim is a retired Bay City Times crime reporter.

Appledore Tall Ship Sail: Legends of the Saginaw River (174)

Learn the fascinating history of the Saginaw River as you sail on the Appledore IV from downtown Bay City to the Saginaw Bay on the last day of summer. Once out on the open water, you can help the crew set the sails or relax and enjoy the view. While we sail, a delicious barbeque luncheon will be served. The Appledore IV is based in Bay City and was launched in 1989. This will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beauty of our region and get to know other OLLI members. Eastern European History (Part One) (175)

Millions of Americans have descendants that came from Eastern Europe. However, American schools only teach the history of the Mediterranean Western Europe. This class is an overview of the history of the other Europe. It is intended to briefly cover the prehistory and early history of the lands located in Central and Eastern Europe through the causes of World War II. If there is sufficient interest, a follow-up class will be offered to cover the Second World War to present. The class will be led by OLLI member Leonard Lukshaitis, who is Lithuanian and Polish and enjoys researching his family history.

The History of Japanese-American Internment (176)

political controversy surrounding the cases and justices. The secret decision-making processes and history of appointments to the high bench will also be examined. The class will be led by SVSU adjunct history professor Katherine Ellison.

With the issuance of Executive Order 9066

by President Franklin Roosevelt in February of 1942, the internment of approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans began, lasting until 1946 when the final camp closed.

With their property confiscated, employment curtailed, and free movement limited by armed guards, American citizens of Japanese descent spent most of WWII in relocation camps in the American west. This course will examine anti-Asian sentiment prior to WWII that helped influence internment policy, the context of global politics during WWII, the way in which internment proceeded and how Japanese-Americans lived in the camps. Finally, we will look at long-term impact that internment has had on American society. The class will be led by Kathleen McGuire, an SVSU adjunct history instructor.

Alexandria (178)

Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria became one of the greatest cities of the Hellenistic World. It was the center of commerce between Europe and the Arabian and Indian East. Its library was a major center of scholarship for hundreds of years. This class will cover the founding of the city, development by the kingdom of the Ptolomies, development of international trade with the Indus Valley, West Coast of India, and Ceylon. OLLI members, Joe Rainey, who has been researching the city for years, and Barb Mitchell, who has always been intrigued by libraries, will lead the class.

Great Battles Part II: The Pacific (179)

This class will take an in-depth look at a two important battles in the Pacific, including the Philippines and Guadalcanal. The first two meetings will cover the fall of the Philippines from December 1941 to May 1942, then the return to the Philippines from October 1944 to August 1945. The last two meetings will cover the Guadalcanal campaign on land, sea, and air from August 1942 to February 1943.

The Political History of the Supreme Court (177)

“The Constitution is what the judges say it is,” noted Justice Charles Evans Hughes in 1907. However, the Supreme Court of the United States has often been lauded as a bastion of justice and law, free from political persuasion; the safeguard of the U.S. Constitution. So how is it possible that the nine justices in black have so much flexibility in their decisions? In this course you’ll learn about the political history of the Supreme Court from its constitutional inception and creation to its modern-day functionality. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Estate Planning (183)

What is estate planning? Why do you need to do it? What happens if you die without an estate plan? What is a trust and how does it work? When might you need a trust? These are just some of the questions that will be addressed in this two-session interactive class led by Bob Whiting with Gardey Financial Advisors. The class will cover wills, trusts, joint ownership, beneficiary designations, and more. It is appropriate for estates of any size. Bob has spent his entire career of 40 years in estate planning and trust management as both a senior bank trust officer and as a vice president of a financial planning firm. Plenty of time will be provided for student questions.

In this unique “class” you will visit local companies and organizations and learn more about them. In September we tour General Housing in Bay City, a modular home manufacturer which was established in 1982.

In October we visit MSU Midland Research Institute for Value Chain Creation, which develops cutting-edge solutions to improve public and private value chains. November’s stop will be Savant Group in Midland which is comprised of four individual companies that provide products and services to the automotive and lubricant industry. Voter Suppression: Is Democracy Broken? (184)

This course will look at events from the 1960s civil rights movement and the Voting Rights Act, to the Supreme Court’s recent cancellation of a major section of the Civil Rights Act, and the subsequent actions of many states to restrict voting rights. Some of the voter suppression tactics to be discussed include voter ID rules, voter registration restrictions, the selective closing of voting sites, and changes in absentee ballot procedures. The class will be led by OLLI members Leslie Sanders and Carol Gohm.

Best of Behind Closed Doors (182)

Over the years, our Behind Closed Doors class has visited some especially interesting organizations. This class includes repeat visits to three of these. In October we visit Standard Electric in Saginaw, an independently owned electrical distributor with 20 locations in upper and lower Michigan.

November’s visit will be to Saginaw’s Durolast, which manufactures custom-fabricated commercial roofing systems. In December we will visit the Saginaw Township Police Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Election 2016: T-Minus 30 (185)

well-attended programs, will focus on how the world will respond to either a President Trump or a President Clinton. By this time we will also know the composition of the House and Senate and therefore will have a much more enhanced ability to project how the recent election will shape not just United States foreign policy, but the world we live in. Control of the Senate will determine the ability of the new President to engage in treaty negotiations with a potential for ratification. Also by this time we will know the long-term ramifications of the BREXIT campaign. The class will be led by attorney Jim Johnson, a political science professor at Ithaca College in New York. There will be a one-hour break for lunch.

With approximately 35 days remaining before Americans vote in what is without question the most unusual national election cycle since perhaps 1800 (Jefferson-Adams), this class will explore the relative positions of the major candidates, the potential election outcome, and analyze the following questions: What are the electoral ramifications with respect to Congress? How would either candidate impact the Supreme Court? What are the down-ballot ramifications? How will the economy respond? How will the world respond? What factors contributed to an electoral climate which may damage the image of America for years to come? Issues in the News (188)

In this class we will discuss issues currently in the news. There will be at least two topics in each of the four class periods. A 15-20 minute video from TED.com will present one speaker’s view of the issue. Each talk will be followed by class discussion on the topic. This term’s topics will include climate change, the criminal justice system, using virtual reality in reporting the news, and repairing dysfunctional government processes. The last 15-30 minutes of class will be reserved for open discussion of any current issues that class members want to discuss. The class will be moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.

Insight Into Brazil, Liberia and Cuba (186)

OLLI member Dr. Kathleen List is back with a class which will focus on three countries in transition. In the first session she will discuss her recent experience in August at the Olympics in Rio, the on-going saga of corruption with Brazil’s largest companies, the impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rouseff, and the steady decline of that country’s economy. Session two will focus on the sequelae of the Liberian Civil War. She will consider what happens to child soldiers, both male and female, at the end of civil war. The last session will give us an update on Cuba.

Although the USG has authorized seven airlines to fly into Cuba, none is authorized to land in Havana. How are things changing for Cuba, from both sides of the long-standing equation and mistrust? Kathleen spent 20 years as a U.S. Diplomat in many countries throughout the world and has taught at the University of Michigan and the American University in Paris.
