A Message from the President We at SVSU are proud of you for completing your degree. Congratulations! Your commitment and determination to earn your degree stand out and exemplify leadership. The lessons you have learned will serve you well throughout your life and career. I believe that education is one of the great equalizers in life. It opens doors and creates opportunities; it helps people realize the potential they did not see in themselves. I am confident you will benefit from your SVSU education and the personal growth you achieved during your time here. As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of SVSU, I hope you share your Cardinal story with your future coworkers, neighbors and friends. Your success is our success; the success of a university and its graduates are forever intertwined.

2

On behalf of my colleagues — your professors, staff, mentors and supervisors and all who have influenced your academic journey — thank you. Thank you for believing in us and believing in yourself. We hope the relationships you have built on campus will last for many years to come and continue to support and inspire you. Once again, congratulations. Enjoy this special day with your family, friends and loved ones, and please stay in touch with your alma mater. Sincerely,

George Grant Jr, President

Greetings to our Newest Alumni Congratulations on your achievement, graduates! As your degree is conferred upon you today, you join a group of more than 53,000 Saginaw Valley State University alumni. Let me be the first to welcome you to the SVSU Alumni Association! Your membership in the Alumni Association grants you access to a growing list of exclusive benefits available to SVSU graduates. On top of these benefits are the connections you have gained or perhaps have yet to establish. With over 53,000 alumni, you can find a fellow Cardinal nearly everywhere you go! SVSU is here for you professionally and personally as you continue in your education, career and other pursuits. Every Cardinal has a unique story, and all Cardinal stories are worth telling. You can reach out to the Alumni Office at any time to share your story or update your contact information to continue to receive information about events and opportunities at SVSU. Sharing your story could impact the success of students or even open new connections for you. It is my greatest hope that SVSU has become like a home to you as you pursued your degree. That feeling of belonging will remain each time you step on campus today and every day in the future. Your Cardinal home is always here for you, and we hope you will stay in touch. On behalf of the SVSU Alumni Association, I extend my congratulations and best wishes for your future. It is forever and always a GREAT day to be a CARDINAL. Your fellow Cardinal,

Academic Regalia Official participants in commencement ceremonies wear distinctive apparel referred to as regalia. The gowns, caps and hoods worn today evolved from costumes worn several centuries ago in European ceremonies. Gowns traditionally are black, although some academic institutions prescribe a school color for their graduates’ gowns. SVSU graduates who have completed bachelor’s degrees wear red gowns; those who have completed master’s degrees wear black regalia. Members of the Board of Control and the president wear red regalia to distinguish them as serving on the university’s governing board. Caps are either mortarboard or a soft beret modeled after the cap of Cambridge University. The tassel on the cap may be black or a color indicating the field of study for the earned degree. A gold tassel signifies the holder of a doctoral degree. Hoods, which drape over the back of the gown, are worn only by those with a master’s degree and higher. The colors in the hood denote the degree earned, academic institution and field of study. The colors revealed in the center back of the hood signify the school colors of the academic institution granting the degree (SVSU colors are red and blue). The velvet trim showing around the neck, and also on some doctoral gowns, represents the field of study. Qualifying students completing bachelor’s degrees may elect to don honors cords over their gown to visibly display the academic honors they have earned. At SVSU, students who graduate cum laude (GPA of 3.4 to 3.59) may wear a navy cord; students who graduate magna cum laude (GPA of 3.6 to 3.79) may wear a silver cord; students who graduate summa cum laude (GPA of 3.8 or higher) may wear a gold cord.

WHAT SETS SVSU APA OUTSTANDING JOB PLACEMENT RATE SVSU graduates earn a 97% job placement rate upon graduation. Many of those fresh alumni, in fact, receive job offers prior to earning their academic degree, setting them up for success immediately after they have completed their studies.

ROBUST OPPORTUNITIES 8

SVSU offers more than 100 programs of study for students ambitious to pursue a variety of exciting careers. These programs are provided in SVSU’s colleges of Arts & Behavioral Sciences; Business; Education; Health & Human Services; and Science, Engineering & Technology.

TOP-RATED ACADEMIC OFFERINGS SVSU is an accredited institution and many of its academic programs have earned high marks of accreditation from top agencies. For instance, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accredited SVSU’s Scott L. Carmona College of Business, ranking it in the top 6% of business schools globally.

VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE SVSU students are prepared for their careers through a number of programs that offer experiential learning outside of classroom studies. For example, at SVSU, future educators are prepared with more than 500 hours of experience in K-12 classroom settings. Also, 85% of students receive service learning experience outside of the classroom.

PART FROM THE REST SECOND-TO-NONE AFFORDABILITY With the lowest tuition among the state universities in Michigan, SVSU is a reliable, proven investment for students and alumni. Nearly 33% of SVSU students graduate with zero debt, while many others graduate with little debt in comparison to graduates from other higher education institutions.

EXCELLENT SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT Along with low tuition rates, a variety of financial support – including scholarships – allows SVSU students to enjoy an affordable college experience. In total, 90 percent of Cardinals receive scholarships or financial aid, thanks in large part to resources made available at the university.

AN INCREDIBLE CAMPUS LIFE With its personable staff and faculty, SVSU earns a reputation as a “home away from home” for students. That designation especially applies to residential students living in SVSU’s housing facilities, which the website Niche ranked No. 1 in the nation among public universities.

AN ENGAGED COMMUNITY Centrally located between the Great Lakes Bay Region’s most vibrant communities, SVSU students and alumni remain engaged in a range of activities and organizations. One of the university’s longstanding traditions is Battle of the Valley, an annual student-run fundraiser that has donated more than $600,000 to nonprofit organizations in the region.

The SVSU Seal The triangle within the SVSU seal symbolizes the geographical area formed by Bay City, Midland and Saginaw. It denotes the linking of three separate communities and surrounding areas through an institution dedicated to higher education. The year of the university’s founding, 1963, appears below the triangle. Three symbols within the triangle are of Egyptian origin. The figure at the top represents life, denoting that education is an ongoing, lifelong process and has a value that lasts forever. The symbol at the lower left represents light — perhaps the inner light. It recognizes that our knowledge is a torch of smoky pine that lights the pathway but one step ahead. Opposite the light of knowledge in the lower right corner is a staff, which stands for strength. This may be regarded as an appeal for the endurance necessary to search for and find the truth, as well as the strength to speak and live it.

Land Acknowledgement Statement for Saginaw Valley State University At Saginaw Valley State University, we recognize that we are located on the ancestral homelands of the Anishinaabe, Wyandot, and Sauk. We specifically acknowledge the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe and the land ceded in the Saginaw Treaty of 1819, on which we reside. We appreciate the importance of preserving and honoring the traditions of Indigenous People, who are an integral part of our shared history. As we pledge to serve as responsible stewards of the land, we endeavor for this history to inform our teaching, scholarship, and our commitment to community.
