Students are admitted to the SVSU nursing program each year during the fall and winter semesters. The application dates, forms and information related to the application process are available on the nursing department website ( Admission is competitive; students not chosen may reapply (as there is no waiting list at our university) for a total of three applications.

Admission Process for Basic Students

Students should apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program when they anticipate completion of required nursing prerequisite courses prior to the fall or winter semester they are applying to be admitted to. All required nursing prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better except for anatomy and physiology courses which must each be completed with a grade of “B-” (2.7) or better. Students may repeat three required prerequisite courses. No required prerequisite course can be repeated more than once. All required nursing prerequisite courses must be completed or in progress during the nursing application process. All required nursing prerequisite courses in progress during the application process must be completed with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better except for anatomy and physiology which must be completed with a grade of “B-” (2.7) or better in each, and all other nursing program selection criteria prior to enrollment in nursing courses. Applications must be submitted in their entirety online. Applications submitted after the deadline may not be considered. Students admitted to the BSN Nursing Program will be chosen by a selection committee using current selection criteria.

Eligibility and Selection Eligibility for applying to the nursing program will be based largely upon grade point average. To be eligible for consideration, a student must have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA, a 3.00 GPA in required statistics and science nursing prerequisite courses, and a minimum of 2.7 GPA in each A&P course. In computation of the cumulative GPA, all retake grades will be calculated. In computation of the GPA for nursing required prerequisite courses, three retake grades will be calculated. The number of SVSU credits successfully completed will be considered in the selection process.

The need for nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree as well as advanced practice degrees is steadily increasing and the opportunities to practice in a wide range of settings continues to expand. The BSN is often necessary for administrative positions, and it is a prerequisite for admission to graduate nursing programs.

SVSU’s nursing program admits up to 192 students per year, and students can expect to complete the degree program in four to fourand-a-half years. Each student admitted into the program completes the nursing courses in a “cohort” group among one another. Generally, students take one and one half to two years to complete general education and pre-nursing courses, and then typically about two and one-half years of nursing courses which are designed to effectively prepare students for the “real world” by exposing them to realistic situations and simulations. Upon successful completion of the BSN program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) which is a requirement to become licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse.
