PRESIDENT’S GREETING

It is my great honor as Chair of the Student Union to congratulate you on your study place and warmly welcome you to Hanken!

Student life is not only about lectures, group work, and countless hours in the library it is also about having fun, creating memories, and forming friendships for life That’s why we at the Student Union of Hanken School of Economics (SHS) offer a balance to the worries of everyday life The Student Union organizes parties, events, excursions, and so much more. We provide a community a warm and open community where you are guaranteed to find something that fits you and your interests! My best advice is to make the most of your time as a student and take every chance and opportunity that comes your way you won’t regret it!

Starting your studies means beginning a new chapter in life. For many, it means moving away from home, creating new routines, and learning to take greater responsibility for yourself and your studies. Regardless of your background, there is a place for you in our wonderful Hanken community.

Hanken is a very special university, as it is the only independent university in Finland that educates solely in economics The Student Union of Hanken School of Economics (SHS) is also unique, as we are the only student union exclusively for economics students and one of only two student unions in Finland with Swedish as our official language.

Now you might be wondering: what exactly is a student union? Student unions are organizations that represent students at universities and safeguard their interests They are public institutions regulated by the Universities Act, and all students are automatically members. In Finland, there are a total of 14 student unions, and SHS is one of them. The Student Union acts as a link between the university and its students, while also representing students’ interests on a national level. Beyond that, the union is also a “playground for growth.” By being active and seizing the opportunities available, our members can grow as individuals, try new things, learn new skills, and build broad networks not only with fellow students but also with the business world

of the Student Union Hi!

There are many ways to get involved already in your first year of studies During the fresher’s autumn, you’ll have the chance to join, for example, the Overall Team or the Extra Active Freshers (EAG). You can also join one of our many committees or clubs or why not start your very own club?

If decision-making is something that interests you, then SHS’s Representative Council might be the right fit for you! The Representative Council is the Student Union’s highest decisionmaking body and decides, for example, on the union’s budget, action plan, board, and committee chairs.

The opportunities are endless, and there truly is something for everyone. I highly recommend becoming active in the Student Union in one way or another it will give you friends, valuable experiences, and memories that last a lifetime!

I look forward to meeting you all this autumn, hearing your fresh ideas, and seeing how you become part of our organization and help develop it further. And do stop by we sometimes even serve free coffee! Once again, congratulations, and a very warm welcome to SHS the most fun student union in Finland

I hope you will feel at home here during your years of study!

Hugs,

RECTOR’S GREETING

Dear new Hanken student,

When you look back in 10 years on your first time here at Hanken, I’m certain that as an alum you will have many fond memories. The first weeks are filled with new impressions, an abundance of information from different sources, activities with the student union, and plenty of new acquaintances. Be curious, be brave, ask questions, and also take the time to enjoy what might feel unfamiliar, while seizing the opportunity to learn new things about yourself. A warm welcome to an important and memorable part of your life!

I would also like to congratulate you on your place of study. In recent years, we have had a record number of applicants to all our programs. It is clear that studies at Hanken are seen as providing our graduates in economics with strong tools to take on the challenges and opportunities working life offers. We also know that our alumni are highly satisfied both with their decision to study at Hanken and with where they find themselves in their careers five years after graduating.

At a time when language skills are generally declining in our country, Hanken strives to continue being a leader in the internationalisation of our students. We offer language courses in several languages and hope that as many students as possible will develop in-depth knowledge in either German, French, or Spanish. Solid language skills have always been an important competitive advantage for Hanken graduates on the labour market. Hanken is the only university in Finland with a mandatory exchange (and/or work experience) abroad.

In addition, every year we welcome over 200 exchange students from around the world, have many international students in our English-language master’s programme, and in 2024 launched an English-language bachelor’s programme all of which means that you will be studying in Swedish in a very international environment. All the contacts you make and the insights you gain into other languages and cultures will be valuable to you in the future.

Our goal is to give you a study period filled with great experiences and lessons we of course expect you to take responsibility for your academic success, but we also want to ensure that you receive the support you need. We have zero tolerance for all forms of discrimination, abuse, and harassment, and all our activities are guided by the values of equality, openness, and integrity. Our tutors are here to guide you during your first semester, and here, the threshold is low for asking for help or booking a meeting with a study advisor, the study coach, or our study psychologist.

The autumn term has begun once again, a warm welcome, and thank you for choosing Hanken!

THE STUDENT UNIONS CURATOR

Dear newly arrived Hankeit,

You have made it into a distinguished group of Hankeits. Congratulations on that. Ahead of you are several years of interesting, rewarding, and at times demanding studies — but that’s exactly how it should be at one of the very top business schools in the Nordics, Hanken.

If you are one of our international students, I want to congratulate you as well. You have not only chosen one of the best business schools in the Nordics and Europe, but you are also a member of the best student union on the planet, SHS. Enjoy your valuable studies and enjoy the rich social life your student union offers you.

I have one (1) piece of advice for you: get involved in the student union! You will never regret it. You’ll learn a great deal of useful things — organisation, finance, and leadership in practice — while also getting a welcome balance to your studies. You will meet a lot of people, forming a large network that will shape your entire professional character, and you will build friendships that will last a lifetime. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about.

Forty-five years after I was a “gulnäbb” (freshman), I still actively race sailboats with my study friends, go fishing at the summer house with my Casa Nostra pals, celebrate Midsummer, play golf, and travel with… that’s right, my old student union friends. And remember: once a Hankeit, always a Hankeit.

Enjoy the best time of your life!

SECRETERY GENERAL

Dear Fresher,

A big congratulations on your study place and a warm welcome to SHS!

Did you know that the student union also has two employees? I work as the Secretary General, which is both fun and challenging, with a very wide variety of tasks so far, no two workdays have been the same, and none have been boring. My work is a mix of finance, administration, politics, social impact, and even law. As a fun fact, I’ve previously studied political science, entrepreneurship, and songwriting.

I work closely with both the Board and the Representative Council here at SHS It’s rewarding and important work not least because the Representative Council functions as our own little “parliament ” The Council sets the overall direction for the student union and elects the Board. This autumn, it’s time for the Representative Council elections, and that’s your chance to get involved. You can run as a candidate, vote or why not apply for the Board or one of our committees? There are many ways to engage, no matter how much time you have to spare.

Do you want to help shape the future of the student union? Get in touch or keep an eye out for more information this autumn we need dedicated students who want to make a difference!

In addition to my work with finances, administration, and the Board’s day-to-day matters, I also maintain contact with other student unions and our partners I represent SHS at various events and keep up to date with higher education and social policies that affect students especially through the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL).

At the student union, we also have Jesper Rajakangas, our Finance and Administration Secretary If you become active in the union and especially if you join a committee or a division there’s a good chance you’ll be in touch with Jesper at some point regarding ongoing financial matters

We work at the student union building, located just behind Hanken, which is a lively hub of both union activity and laughter, and all student union members are welcome with open arms (after a quick press of the door buzzer!). If you have questions, my inbox is always open!

SHS aims to inspire members to be socially engaged and take responsibility. Getting involved in the student union is something I can warmly recommend. Whether you want to help organise amazing parties, serious corporate events, represent students in Hanken’s administrative bodies, engage in national higher education policy, or explore your passions through a hobby club the student union gives you a platform to spread your wings Student life is your opportunity to gain unforgettable experiences, friendships, and lessons for life.

I hope your time as a student at Hanken will be educational, rewarding, and fun!

Sunny and cheerful greetings,

Secretary General, SHS gensek@shs.fi

FINANCIAL & ADMINISTRATIVE

Hi there! First, a huge congratulations on your admission to Hanken – I hope you’ve had a relaxing summer, because things are about to get started!

My name is Jesper Rajakangas, and I serve as the Financial & Administrative Secretary at SHS, but I usually go by “Ekon-sec.” Together with the Secretary General (gen-sec) and the board, I make sure the daily administrative work at the student union runs smoothly. For my part, this includes things like sending invoices to partner companies, bookkeeping, and supporting committees with budgeting.

As a fresher, it's good to know that you can always reach out to me if you have any issues with, for example, the student union fee (which should be paid when you register for the academic year – so make sure to do that ASAP!). If you later become active in the student union, which I highly recommend, I also help with managing the financial tasks.

In addition to my work as ekonsek, this autumn I’ll be working on my bachelor’s thesis, and then going on exchange. I’m also buzzing around the student union with exciting projects in the Corporate Relations Committee and the working group for SHS Strategy 2030.

In the past, I’ve been involved in the Board, as a tutor, and as “Papi” in Gekko. In other words, there’s a good chance you’ll run into me either at the student union or at Hanken –and if you do, feel free to give me a tap on the

shoulder if you have any questions about student life or just want to say hi!

Last but not least, I want to encourage you to get the most out of student life and really explore what SHS has to offer – there’s bound to be something that’s a perfect fit for you, and if not, you have the chance to create it yourself! If your tutors don’t have the answer to something you’re wondering about, it’s always easy to get in touch with me.

Once again, a big congratulations, a warm welcome, and see you this autumn!

THE STUDENT COUNCIL

Hi gulis!

Congratulations on your study place and a warm welcome to Hanken and SHS, also called the student union or simply the union. Here is a greeting from the Student Council, the highest decisionmaking body of the Student Union. We hope you are looking forward to the fall and we can guarantee that your tutors and the rest of us in the student union are working hard to make sure you have the most unforgettable fall and study time possible!

"What is a council then?"

you might ask. Well, it's a group of eager student union members elected by other student union members to make important decisions within the union and to oversee the student union's board. The student union council can be compared to a municipal council, church council or, to some extent, Parliament - but for the student union. The most important tasks of the council include deciding on strategic matters, such as approving the student union's budget, determining the amount of the student union fee and making long-term plans for the direction of the student union's development. The council also elects the SHS board, committee presidents and other representatives of the union - for example, students who sit on the Hanken board.

"Why do people get involved in the council?"

As a member of the council, you get to participate and influence by discussing and deciding, for example, how the student union fee should be used in the smartest way, what equality rules the committees should follow and what the board should focus on in its work. In other words, you get to influence how the community you now become part of works, which according to us in the Presidium is very fun, educational and meaningful!

"What kind of Presidium are you talking about and who are these Student Council Members?"

you might be wondering The Student Council is made up of a maximum of 18 ordinary members and 18 deputies, elected by direct, secret and proportional election every fall. The Student Council is led by a Presidium, which is elected by the Student Council, and this year consists of President Anton Mattsson, First Vice-President OnniMithra Ingus and Second Vice-President Madicken ‘Madde’ Heiskanen The Second Vice-President also chairs the Grand Committee - a group of extra eager Student Council members who, among other things, prepare matters for the Student Council

A list of all members can be found on the Student Union's website shs fi

"What do I, a gulis, have to do with the Student Council?"

you might ask. As you've probably noticed above, almost everything that happens at the union is affected in some way by the work of the council, so if you have suggestions for improvement or want to learn more about the union, you can, among other things

stand for election to the Student Council in the fall. The Student Union's Central Election Committee (CVN) will help you with everything you need.

vote in the Student Council elections to be held this fall More information will be available around October

Attend Student Council meetings, which are held once a month Meeting times and locations can always be found on the Union's website at least 10 days before the meeting

get in touch with a Student Council member or a member of the Presidium to share your experiences, discuss, ask questions or otherwise philosophize As a gulis, you see other sides than we more inveterate corps foxes, so your input is super important!

Don't hesitate to contact Anton, Onni-Mithra or Madde if you have any questions, concerns or opinions about anything. We are happy to help and discuss. Have a great rest of the summer and we will see you soon in the fall!

STUDY TIPS & TRICKS

Starting at Hanken is an exciting time filled with opportunities, but it can sometimes be challenging to begin your studies in a stress-free way. Here are some tips and tricks to make your study time easier and help you succeed.

FindYour Study Technique

Studying is something incredibly personal. For some , independent study works best, but for someone else, it might be different. Therefore, it's important to try different learning methods early in the autumn and be critical, for example by asking questions like "Do I learn better this way?" or "Do I learn better if I attend the lecture, or if I go to the library and read at my own pace?". Criticism, self-awareness, and independence can lead to long-term results.

PlanYour Time and Focus

Good time management is important to balance both studies and free time. Determining which courses require more effort and which material within the course needs your focus and most time is crucial. Some courses have several hundred-pagelong books that don't need to be touched, while other courses require you to remember the book by heart.

Find a Study Environment

Find a place where you can study undisturbed and that has a good atmosphere. It can be a library, a quiet room at home, or a café where you find motivation. It's also good to switch between places while maintaining some sort of routine.

Take Breaks

Studying for long periods without a break can lead to exhaustion. Make sure to take regular breaks to keep your brain fresh and productive. This can involve hanging out with friends, taking a short walk, or just resting for a while.

Seek HelpWhen Needed

Don't wait to seek help if you're struggling with something. Talk to your teachers, seek support from study counselors, or form study groups with your classmates. In many courses, groups are helpful, and when it comes to group projects, a well-functioning group is crucial.

Engage in Student Life

The student union offers much more than just studies. Join committees, clubs, and sections, participate in events, and meet new people. It makes your study time more enjoyable.

Health andWell-being

Don't forget to take care of your physical and mental health. Exercise regularly, eat healthily, and get enough sleep. This helps you perform better in your studies. This can be difficult to maintain alongside an active student life (alcohol), so set boundaries for yourself.

ENGAGE EU

ENGAGE.EU is a European university alliance that Hanken has been a member of since 2023, so this is also new to us and the alliance is constantly evolving. In the alliance, which specialises in economics, a total of 9 universities are members, from sunny Spain to mountainous Norway.

Together, these 9 universities form a European university with over 125.000 students, and by studying at Hanken, you are automatically a member of this community.

As a member of ENGAGE.EU, you can take advantage of many different benefits. For example, you can take part in the Summer and Winter Schools organised every summer and winter break in one of the member countries' universities. So if extra courses and the beaches of Barcelona or the ancient wonders of Rome during your winter break sound appealing, keep your eyes peeled for the call for applications later this autumn.

A six-month programme on digital transformation is under development and at Master's level there is a joint GSM, global sustainability management, programme is forthcoming. In the past, courses such as 'Data Science in ActionUse of Data Science Methods in Different Disciplines (6 ECTS) and Virtual Collaborations Across Cultures (6 ECTS) have also been offered through ENGAGE.EU and more are on the way.

You will be starting your studies in economics this autumn and in the everchanging job market we live in today, it is important to be able to stand out from the crowd with your education.

ENGAGE.EU helps you with this by broadening the range of courses available to you and, above all, giving you an opportunity to participate in a European community.

SSHV

SSHV is the student association at the Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa, and serves as the heart of student life for around 600 active members.

Our main mission is to create a welcoming, inspiring, and inclusive atmosphere both at Hanken and in the broader student community of Vaasa. The association was founded back in 1980 and has since been an important support system for students we advocate for their interests and promote a meaningful and memorable study experience. Student life in Vaasa has a unique character and differs notably from that in Helsinki. One of the most striking differences is that in Helsinki, it is primarily CN and other committees that organize events, while here at SSHV, the board itself carries the main responsibility for event planning. Within SSHV’s board, we have roles such as Program Manager, Facilities Manager, Project, Corporate Relations, and Student Welfare Representatives each contributing to the organization of various events. We also work closely with other student associations in Vaasa, and most of the autumn’s sitzes are co-hosted with another association.

But Cella is much more than just a bar—it’s the living room of Vaasa’s Hanken students, a natural hub for socializing and community. Most of our events are held here, and during the academic year, we regularly host “Cella Open” nights, where the doors stay open to the public all evening. It’s a night filled with laughter, mingling, and dancing countless unforgettable memories have been made right there, on Cella’s dance floor.

GURUFRESHER

Hi new fresher! - and big congratulations on securing your study spot at Hanken! You’re about to begin an incredible journey, filled with unforgettable experiences, nice people and plenty of fun events. Both Hanken and SHS - our student union - offer a wide range of activities, parties and chances to meet new people, so make the most of it!

My name is Riia Syrjäsuo and I am 21 years old, and I’m starting my second year at Hanken, majoring in Management and Entrepreneurship Last fall I had the honor of becoming the very first Gurufresher - an award given to someone who is positive, kind, talkative and actively participates during the Fresher Fall. As part of the tradition, the Gurufresher of the previous year writes a greeting to welcome the new students - so here’s mine to you.

From personal experience, I truly recommend attending the events organised by different committees in the fall. There’s something for everyone - and every event is a great chance to meet new people. When I started at Hanken, I didn’t know anyone, but by staying open-minded and simply talking to people, I have gained so many great friends A good way to meet like minded people is to join a committee or club SHS has a large variety of clubs from business, wine tasting, golf, skiing, and event planning. I joined the Extra Active Gulisar (EAG) where we organised events like the Beer Olympics and the legendary EAG Sitz Since then, I’ve been part of other clubs and committees - and it has been both fun and eventful. This year, I’m part of the Freshers Committee as a tutor, and can’t wait to make your Fresher Fall unforgettable.

There will be moments when your studies feel stressful or overwhelming - that’s completely normal Taking part in events will help you unwind and shift your focus. It’s also a great way to find study buddies. Studying with friends makes it easier and more fun Be present at the school, find a good spot after lectures, eat lunch together and tackle assignments together. Some of my favorite memories from last fall have been those long days spent at school from morning to evening – filled with laughter, productivity, and snacks. Studying doesn’t feel like a burden when it’s shared with good friends.

As your time at hanken is soon to start, be open minded, be your authentic self and make the most out of every moment. Your gulishöst - Fresher Fall - will fly by before you know it, so dive in and enjoy the ride.

Looking forward to seeing you all, Riia Syrjäsuo Gurufresher 2024

GULNÄBBSKOMMITÉN - GEKKO

Dear Fresher, Congratulations on your admission and warmly welcome to Hanken and the student union, SHS!

You have a wonderful time ahead of you, the fresher fall, so really try to make the most out of it and attend all the fun events that are organised!

Gulnäbbskommittén is a committee at SHS and we are 22 tutors taking care of the freshers of the Swedish taught programme at Hanken, by introducing them to both the studies and the study life. During the fresher fall, or gulishöst as we say in Swedish, we organise a lot of fun activities, ranging from small get togethers and pub crawls to sitzes and a trip to our other campus city, Vaasa! We start during the introduction weeks in August and finish up the fresher fall with Halarutdelningen in November.

We collaborate tightly with other committees at SHS, such as the Sports committee, Exchange committee and Casa Nostra, and of course Freshers Committee which we have our closest collaboration with. Together we will organise grand events, such as Gulismiddagen, Gulisintagningen, Gulissemin and Halarutdelningen. We're really looking forward to seeing you guys there!

Good luck with the studies and enjoy the fresher fall - vi ses på Casa!

CASA NOSTRA - CN

Welcome to the best year of your life!Your time at Hanken will be packed with unforgettable nights and events - and it's us, Casa Nostra, who are mostly responsible for making that happen. We are the official party committee of the student union, and we organize the best parties in town!

Since 1977, Casa Nostra (CN) has made it its mission to quench the never-ending thirst for fun among Hanken students And to meet that demand, you need a team focused solely on one thing: party planning. For 48 years, CN has made sure the events are among the very best This autumn, we're organizing classic events like: Inledande festen, Gulismiddag and Julfesten - all of which you definitely don't want to miss.

Besides dancing the night away, CN's parties are great opportunities to meet new people and get to know those semi-familiar faces from your lectures.

CN 2025 goes by the name Contentum Noctem, and we aim to provide the best entertainment a Hanken student could wish for - all year around. We are a lively team of 22 students who love everything to do with parties and event planning. But it's not all hard work - the best part is getting to enjoy the events ourselves: meeting friends and dancing the night away.

Within CN, we're divided into different teams, each responsible for their own area of the party planning Hosts and hostesses take care of the amazing food at our sitzes, Proggis handles the decorations and the entertainment, and the royal Spritis-team ensures no one goes home thirsty. Our PR team keeps everyone informed and makes sure you walk away from each sitz with a souvenir - a patch that matches the night's theme.

Last but not least, we have Regis, made up of the president, vice-president and treasurer. They make sure everything runs smoothly and that the events live up to expectations.

Being a part of CN means gaining much more than just event experience. Not only do you get to spend time with 21 of your best friends, but you also become part of the most active and welcoming community within the student union.

Being in CN is truly an unforgettable experience. It gives you useful skills for the future and is a great way to meet new people. You are always welcome at our events! And if you think party planning might be your thing - APPLY TO CASA NOSTRA 2026!

More info is available at www.shs.fi, and feel free to grab any CN member if you have questions.

See you at Casa!

EXCHANGE COMMITTEE - EC

Hi freshmen, and a warm welcome to Hanken!

The Exchange Committee, or EC, is the committee that takes care of Hanken’s exchange students. Each semester, about 100 new exchange students arrive at Hanken, and our goal is to make their time in Helsinki unforgettable with loads of events and activities – all in English and open to all Hanken students!

We get started as soon as the exchange students arrive, with Get2gethers, sitzes, and parties. On top of that, we organize trips to Tallinn, Stockholm, Lapland, and Vaasa – perfect opportunities to make lifelong memories!

Sounds fun? EC recruits twice a year – keep an eye out in December! As a tutor, you’ll get to meet new people, grow, and have an amazing time during your studies at Hanken.

See you at this fall’s events!

INFORMATION COMMITTEE - INK

Hello Fresher! The Information Committee (INK) warmly welcomes you to Hanken!

As a freshman, you will be taking part in many different events throughout the fall. During these events, there is a good chance you will come across us, since we are often present to capture the moments that define student life here. INK handles a variety of media-related tasks within the student union. One of our main responsibilities is photographing events, but our work also includes producing Hankeiten, the student union’s very own magazine. In Hankeiten, you can find articles about what is currently happening at Hanken, insights into student life and much more.

Currently the committee consists of 12 active members. As a member, you will have the opportunity to learn how to use various tools (such as Canva and Lightroom), layout, photograph and edit photos. In the committee you can help with everything or choose to focus on what interests you the most. We offer training sessions for all members, so no previous experience is necessary! Beyond the practical work, we regularly arrange fun internal events, which foster a strong and lasting bond within the committee.

If you are curious about student life at Hanken, it is highly recommended you take a look at our issuu, where you can find past issues of Hankeiten. You will also find photos from previous events on our flickr page. Also, make sure to follow us on Instagram (@shsink) so you don’t miss out on anything!

If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to tap me on the shoulder or send an email to chefred@shs.fi.

We look forward to seeing you at the events this fall!

SPORTS COMMITTEE - IK

Hello Fresher!

The Sports Committee (also known as IK) warmly welcomes you to Hanken! We are a group of enthusiastic students who organize sports events to help you find the perfect balance between studying, partying, and sports.

The Sports Committee (IK) organises both bigger and smaller sports events that are open to all SHS members. We often collaborate with other committees, clubs and schools! IK hosts bigger events such as Pinktober Charity Run, which supports the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Academic Classic (ice hockey) in the fall. During spring we also host Wappubowl a football tournament between different schools.

Additionally, we also arrange smaller events such as Sweat of the Month, where you have the opportunity to meet new people while doing sports together.

You are always welcome to reach out to us if you have ideas for sports we could try together. In order to not miss these fun events, follow us on Instagram (@shsidrottskommitteen) or Facebook (SHS Idrottskommittén). If you have any questions, feel free to contact anyone from IK.

We hope to see you this fall and wish you a great start for your studies!

INTERNATIONAL HELSINKI DAYS - IHD

Hopefully you had a great summer and are pumped for the coming academic year. Gulishösten is one never ending party and is for enjoying the student life and getting to know new wonderful people. My tip is to participate on as much as you can. You can study later but you are fresher only one time!

International Helsinki Days (IHD) is an international seminar week organized every year at Hanken. In addition to the elected committee of about 20 people, 20-30 international students participate in the week. Students from dozens of countries come to Helsinki to get an insight into Finnish business and student life and form memories for life.

Last year’s highlights included company visits to Nordea, VML, Balmuir and lots of fun sessions! This year, the week is organized for the 39th time and the expectations for the week are justifiably sky high.

The absolute best thing about IHD is the community and memories you create together with your committee and all the wonderful guests. Apply if you want to help organize the best week of your studies and experience one of Hanken’s most fun traditions!

PROGRAM COMMITTEE -

We are the Program Committee, or just PK, and with us, you’ll get to be part of what we like to call the Good Life! We’re a fun-loving group who love to party, plan events, hang out, and create unforgettable experiences for all members of the student union. Our events take place throughout the year, and with us you’ll get to enjoy everything from fancy cocktail evenings to wild sitz parties with friends from other student associations.

This autumn, you’ll meet us at the luxurious three-course dinner with wine tasting, exclusive for freshers, and at the popular Skojrejs, SHS’s very own talent show for everyone, with or without talent. On top of that, we’re already kicking things off in September with the famous crayfish party, and trust us, you don’t want to miss it!

Your first year will be filled with events and new experiences, and I really encourage you to go to as much as you can and then some. The freshers-autumn is a magical time you won’t want to miss!

In PK, we’re not just passionate about organizing events, we also have a close and warm community, and we truly love spending time and partying together. Does that sound like something for you? Our application opens at the end of the year, but until then, you’re more than welcome to join our events and get to know us!

Lastly, congratulations on your study place and welcome to the Good life, you won’t be disappointed! If you have any questions or just want to say hi, feel free to reach out to me or message us on Instagram @programkommitten

All of PK is looking forward to meeting you this autumn!

MASTERS COMMITTEE - MC

Hi dear fresher!

The Masters’ Committee (MC) warmly welcomes you to Hanken!

ANNUAL BALL COMMITTEE - ÅFK

Hi dearest freshmen,

Get ready for the most magnificent event of the year: SHS Annual Ball! Known as The Best Party in the Universe, this unforgettable highlight of the academic year always leaves you with memories for life.

Mark your calendars now for this extraordinary celebration, taking place on February 24–25, 2026, traditionally held during week 8. This date holds special significance, as it marks the introduction of economic freedom in Finland.

The Annual Ball Committee (ÅFK) is responsible for organizing the entire event, and the upcoming 117th anniversary is set to be something truly exceptional. The committee is led by a chairperson and consists of fantastic members, each with different areas of responsibility. Together, we create a celebration full of sparkle, joy, and community. Preparations include everything from planning the program and coordinating the venue to working with sponsors and maintaining contact with partners. ÅFK operates as a team, united by one goal: to create a celebration that both guests and organizers will remember fondly!

But we in ÅFK don’t just focus on making the party amazing—we also work to strengthen the connection between SHS and the business world, while creating opportunities for students to gain new experiences and lifelong friendships.

Want to be part of creating this magical event? Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have ideas, want to help out, or are simply curious to learn more! Also, follow the Annual Ball Committee on Instagram @shsafk for updates and behind-the-scenes content.

Hope to see you in February!

hugs, Marina

Morjens!

THE BUSINESS COMMITTEE -

This fall you will start studying at a well-qualified and highly appreciated business school, Hanken, but at the same time you will also become a member of the world's most fun student union, SHS! (This has a logical explanation, not something we just like to throw around ) The study time is not only about the studying itself, but also about the whole academic life you can experience on the side.

In addition to creating a network of contacts among your fellow students, it is also good to start getting acquainted with the business world and the opportunities available to you as a future graduate from Hanken.

This is where NU comes in It is us in NU who function as the bridging link between students and the business world.

We promote contact with the business community by organizing various events together with our corporate partners and through promoting companies when they are recruiting new talent.

We often organize company-specific events, but also larger events such as the Hanken Network Day in September, and Career Kick-start in November (which is a new event that will be super exciting for us in the committee to organize!) Follow us on Instagram @nu shs and the student union's Linkedin to keep up with the latest news!

In exchange for companies meeting you incredible students, and promoting themselves as possible employers for you, they support the Student Union monetarily. These business partnerships are one of the most important sources of income for the Student Union So in addition to giving you a better insight into the business world and an opportunity to meet recruiters at different companies, these collaborations help us enjoy everything else that SHS produces, for free or for a slightly cheaper price tag!

Do you find the activities of the Business Committee interesting? Then we can recommend that you apply to join the Overalls team! The Overalls team (Swe: Halarteamet) consists of freshmen and members from NU who together search for sponsors for this fall's edition of the student overalls, ie. the ones that you will hopefully get to use during your studies. If you reach a certain amount of sponsorship (not much), you will get your own overall for free. What a deal!

Keep your eyes open for the recruitment ;) Once again: Congratulations! Be proud that you got a study place and enjoy your freshers' autumn and your entire time at Hanken. As we say in Swenglish, "there are omtents (exam re-takes) but no omfests (re-parties)", don't forget that!

THE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

Hi Freshers

So nice that you've found your way to SHS and Hanken. Here you'll make some of your best memories

There are plenty of things to get involved in at SHS. The Interest Representation Committee or IBU, is for those who are curious about student national and municipal advocacy. Our committee supports the board's work with interest representation at SHS. Interest representation might be a completely new term for you, so let me explain It's a summarized term for monitoring our members interests The SHS board and its committees work extensively on issues concerning students financial situations, well-being and rights.

Lobbying and interest representation are actively carried out in the collaborative organization that SHS is involved with or interested in - for example the National Union of University Students in Finland, Finnish Business School Graduates, Student Health Services, HOAS, and World Student Capital among others. It's important that students voices are heard, because as you may know, we are the future;)

Issues that SHS has taken a stand on include among other things raising the income limits for students and transitioning students away from the general housing allowance. IBU meets regularly to discuss current matters.

THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Hi Fresher!

When studying at a university, you have constitutionally mandated opportunities to influence your daily life. You have the chance to be active and express your opinion about studies, so that education develops into the best version for us students. To make an impact, it sometimes takes more than just one student with a voice, and that is where the Education Committee comes in. By law, the student union has the right to have representation in all organs of the university, and this is handled by the socalled student representatives.

The Education Committee primarily consists of these student representatives, around 40 in total, on both the Helsinki and Vaasa campuses. Their activities are coordinated by the Education Committee's board and chairman. These student representatives include, for example, IR representatives (department council representatives, who handle subject-specific issues). Other organs you can sit on include the Education Council (UR) and the University Board.

Representatives for these organs are always selected when there is a need, and announcements about when this is needed are published on shs.fi. The assignment often provides a fee and offers the opportunity to network with many of the student union activists.

The Education Committee is not exclusively made up of student representatives; anyone who wants to influence their education and, for example, has a clever idea is welcome. We are a relatively new committee (founded at the turn of 2015-2016), so we still have a lot to develop, and therefore we encourage you to join and make a difference!

You can find us on Facebook @SHS Utbildningsutskott and Instagram @uu_shs.

THE COMMITTEE OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS

Hi there!

In the Committee of Social Affairs (SOPO) we focus on working with students' well-being and interests both internally and externally. The committee offers events and services to our members that promote wellbeing in one way or another. At SHS, promoting wellbeing means working on many different levels and addressing various aspects of wellbeing: mental, physical, social, sexual and financial wellbeing, and more.

The committee has been in place for two years so events and services are still developing. Events that have been organized include Wellbeing Week, which is held both in the autumn and spring, Pride, charity talks and mindfulness exercises. Student life is hectic with studies, parties and interesting activities and it can be very stressful. The aim of committee is to ease that. Other social affairs the committee is working on include monitoring interest with UniSport and the DEl (diversity, equity and inclusion) plan with Hanken.

The members of the SOPO help with organizing events and lobbying both within and in cooperation with Hanken and other external interests. During meetings we discuss and brainstorm how these issues should be handled.

The most important thing is that we hear different opinions and that we have an interest in working on these issues. The committee also works on equality and the prevention of harassment.

You can find the latest news on social policy, equality work and student benefits and services on Instagram at @shsmoments and @sopoutskottet.

Enjoy your summer and then your study time!

Källargardet

Cellar nights were a word everyone knew a decade ago. A business that everyone knew and that was close to a Hankeits heart. Events to gather to socialize, meet new people and enjoy good drinks.

But the question that remains today is; What is a so-called cellar night and who are the people you find behind the bar?

Down in Casa's deepest basement corner, a new club was formed, founded during the pandemic, and they started calling Legenda, the Corps' own bomb shelter, their new hangout. The organization consists of a few members of varying study ages. This enigmatic organization calls itself Källargardet (KG). KG's purpose is to contribute to the well-being and community of the student union by organizing cellar evenings in Legenda and thus promoting SHS beer culture This is done by arranging regular basement evenings for all SHS students.

Events that we organize include the Beer Khalifa tournament and Oktoberfest, but also old classics such as the 100 club and caps.

This is made possible because the gardists (a member of the KG) live by the following principles: the party is over when the glasses are empty and it's never wrong to drink in the middle of the week We also take the opportunity to welcome you to Hanken and look forward to a fast-paced autumn with you. Follow us on IG to get more information about the autumn events: @kallargardet

EXTRA ACTIVE GULISAR - EAG

Hej Freshers!

AreYOU ready to make your Freshman Fall unforgettable? Do you want to be part of the most legendary club at SHS? Then EAG is your golden ticket!

EAG, also known as Elite Action Group or Extra Aktiva Gulisar, is a club led entirely by you, the Freshers. It’s your only opportunity to work with other students right from the beginning of your studies. As an EAG member, it will be easier for you to meet and connect with students from other programs This is especially important, as tutor groups are small and not mixed across the English and Swedish tracks.

Being a member of EAG makes you an excellent candidate for other clubs and committees after the fall Taking initiative as an EAG member opens doors. And since EAG is only active during your Freshman Fall, it won’t interfere with joining other groups later on.

As part of EAG, you’ll organize your own events, most notably the legendary Beer Olympics, your very own Sitz, and a performance in SHS’s Skojrejs talent show. But don’t worry, you’ll also get to kick back and enjoy the events hosted by other clubs and committees

Many former EAG members have stayed active in the student union, clubs, and committees, and they’ll be there to support you if needed More info is coming your way during the initiation weeks, so stay tuned, stay curious, show up, and whatever you do:

Don’t miss out on EAG!

Best,

IB BOOKSTORE

IB Bookstore is located on the ground floor of Hanken and offers a wide range of products and services to make your student life easier. At our store, you’ll find affordable notebooks and pens, as well as course readers (compendiums) required for certain basic courses.

Do you need a locker to store your things at Hanken? We rent out lockers on site – smooth and easy! We also rent out CAS calculators, which are perfect for introductory courses where the calculator is needed in exams and if you don’t plan to choose a major where a CAS calculator will be required.

We sell SHS and Hanken merchandise such as tote bags, shirts, and caps! You can also find the SHS songbook, which you’ll need at sitz parties, along with other student life essentials like overall patches and shotgun tools.

To use the student printers, you need print credits – these can be purchased from us. We also offer the possibility to print directly on site at IB.

Welcome to IB Bookstore – we’re here to help you through student life with both essentials and little extras!

You can reach us via email (ib@hanken.fi) and on Instagram (@ib_bokhandel).

The Foundation of Swedish students of business sr, shortly SESS, supports the societal, social, intellectual, and study-related ambitions of Hankeites. We fulfill this mission, for example, by funding various projects initiated by both SHSactives and other students. Our board consists twothirds of students and one-third of graduated experts

In 2025, we’ve already supported projects such as a golf tournament, a crayfish party, the SupportHankeites initiative, and new equipment for Legenda, among others The next application round for grants opens in October, so keep an eye out if you have an idea you’d like funding for!

As a Hankeit, you have a stellar opportunity to take part in the board of a real company! This is made possible through the two “Union Companies” owned by SESS: Svecasa and Casa Securities (the IB bookstore) Svecasa provides a prep-course for business school admission, and you’ll definitely visit the IB bookstore during the fall to buy print credits, study materials, or student union merch! The companies also offer suitable part-time jobs for 1–5 motivated students each year

The foundation also co-owns the company Academic Business Consulting, which is actually a course you can take at Hanken at the master’s level. The course simulates consulting, and your task is to sell and carry out a project for a company. With the revenue, the group goes on a study trip abroad. In 2025, the destination is Seoul, South Korea!

You can find more information about the foundation, the companies, and the application period and criteria for funding on SHS.fi. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the foundation’s chairperson Jesper Rajakangas either in person or by emailing sess@shs.fi.

STUDENT OVERALLS

Finnish students use overalls called halare, during their studies at a university. It was originally the teknologs (teekkari = student of institutes of technology) who started using the overalls outside their machine shops at parties and other less official events. Not long after, around 1974, SHS came up with a blue overall. However, it was replaced the very next year by the current white one. Although the overall will remain white only for a little while after Halarutdelningen because while overalls you can ignore where and when you sit, crawl, sleep, swim - you name it. Everyone remembers how nice it was as a child to splash in the mud without worrying about your clothes.

Other decorative items

Decorating & embellishing

The overall should, and will, get other colors on it than all the shades of spilled beer, cider and other surprises that get stuck on it when you crawl around at parties A colorful addition to the overalls are the so-called badges (read: overall badges). A certain custom determines how to wear them on the overall and these rules should preferably not be broken. The SHS badge is placed at the end of the right sleeve, after which you can decorate it with the badges of other student unions, e.g. Vasahanken, KY, Stockholm School of Economics (Handels/HHSS), etc

In addition, there are back badges that you get when you are active in the student union There are some overall badges for sale at the IB. Another fun way to get badges is of course by going to events, as many events also include a badge. This way, you'll remember what you attended even at the end of your studies, as the badges will be like little mementos from each party.

Another tradition is to exchange overall parts, such as collars, sleeves and pockets with other students In the old days, the exchange was a sign of erotic exercise with each other, and this tradition still partly holds today. It is therefore a good idea to bring scissors with you A needle and thread is also recommended, as it can be a bit chilly, especially in -25C, to walk home without the end of your left overall leg.

On the hopefully many endeavours with your dirty white colored halare, other things also tend to get stuck on the it It's handy to have basics like bottle openers and a toothbrush with you. You can find tips for these and other things in some recent issues of Hankeiten (also on Issuu com), under the article title "What's on X's overall?"

STUDENT OVERALLS

Order and tidiness

Please read the following very carefully The overall you wear must never be washed! The dirtier and smellier it is, the more you are appreciated. This proves that you are a hard-core party animal who has been through a lot (of untsunts). The overall is thus a kind of raincoat/mudpants/astronaut/ swimsuit.

There is an exception and even in extreme cases

The only way to clean up the overall is to pour on some liquid pine soap and then jump into the sea

But note, only in case of emergency (Like when the dance floor is empty when you come in stinking...).

Overall parties

Abschluss

If you're wondering where and when you can wear this unique piece of fashion, the answer is clear: it's worn at overall parties absolutely not at non-overall parties or at Hanken (the building itself). The most important one is of course Wappen from Valborgsmässoafton April 30th to early May 2nd, as it is one of the celebration when people make physical contact with nature for the first time after the long winter. In addition the overall is also good at zillis e g after the annual party At an overall party, you should definitely wear your overall Only boring people and fancy know-it-alls consider themselves too grown-up for that Then they swear the next day when the tie smells bad.

When you finally receive your overall later in the fall, remember these details when you put the cloth to use The overall will be awarded when you have completed your time as a gulis and when you have earned enough gulispoints. Once you have been awarded the overall you should remember these tips and rules as required by tradition. This will guarantee you many unforgettable (and forgettable) overal parties and a sense of belonging with everyone wearing the same overall. Once you've graduated from Hanken and you're done with the student union life and hanging out with the "pathetics (pateter) you can still continue to use your overall. All it takes is a little creativity or you can hope that another ex-student will write their tips to NiksiPirkka.

PARTY DISCLIPLINE

Partying is a big part of the student culture in Finland. In our student union SHS, different committees organise various parties, and there is something for everyone. The most common type of partying is called a "Sitz". A sitz is basically a three course dinner where all the students eat, drink and sing songs while sitting together at long tables. The food is usually more like snacks, so make sure you eat beforehand. Your drink rations consist of a shot, some wine and a beer or cider, but depending on the sits. You can bring your own alcohol or buy some. The songs which are sung are called "snapsvisor". These are short songs you sing before you take a shot. The songs can be found in a songbook, which you can buy at the IB at school, but don't worry, you wil learn them fast!

A sitz is always held at our dear Casa-buiding. Casa Academica is not only our party place, but is also the Student Union's home.

Time: Varies, usually 19

Location: Casa, of course

There are many spaces in Casa that Student Union members have at their disposal during their years at Hanken, namely: Kåren, Casa, Legenda, Femman and the Sauna. All of these spaces are different and are used for different purposes. All of these spaces can be booked for free by any SHS member. We will introduce you to all these spaces in the beginning of the fall.

In between all the exams and assignments, we sitz regularly. As a freshman, everything is new and you are forgiven for any mistakes, but when you are no longer one of the newbies, you should know how to sitz. Here is a description of how a well-behaved Hanken student should behave during a sits. In order to avoid clichés, we’ll skip a lot of anecdotes and lead directly with a practical example.

Attire: Snippet snyggare (smart suit or dress), unless otherwise stated. Only wear your halare (overalls) if specifically stated.

Arrival time

PARTY DISCLIPLINE

The time 19:00 means that you arrive between 19:00 and 19:10. The most fussy ones show up at 19:15 (the academic quarter, you know), to avoid giving the impression that they were standing outside the door the window (and writing nasty things in the fog) for the last hour. You arrive well dressed, and don't smell of booze (yet). If you have a guest with you, you naturally make an entrance with them.

Mingle

Once inside the Casa hall, you are supposed to mingle with the other guests This time before dinner is a good time to check out the seating arrangements, so that you don't wander around the room when it's time to go to table. This is of course not done until the hostess announces it.

At the table

When you arrive at your seat, you introduce yourself to your tablemate and smile your most beautiful smile. You wait for the hostess/host to sit down, after which the gentlemen help their lady to her chair. When this is done, the gentleman also sits down. The food is not touched until you have sung "Helan går", "Helan", and all other songs, are led by the toastmasters.

The toastmaster is introduced by the the host/hostess when everyone is seated. The toastmaster is the only one who brings in a song If the toastmaster calls on someone else on the tables to bring in a song, the specially chosen one sings a song (or something like that) After each song, you toast as follows: One raises the glass to face height. First you toast to the person diagonally to the left of you, then diagonally to the right of you and finally to the person right in front you.

Sounds a bit complicated, doesn't it? Don't worry, you'll learn this quickly. The important thing is that

you look each other in the eyes and smile as you toast, and the rest will fall into place During dinner it's important to keep up a polite conversation (or pointless bullshit), but when the toast rings the glass, it's time for singing, and then everyone should be silent. If the singing starts without silence it's time for the restart, which can take quite a long time. Since smoking is banned indoors, you go outside if you want to get a breath of fresh air (through a filter) However, this only happens AFTER coffee

When the music is turned on, dinner is over (standing on the table is absolutely forbidden and will result in heavy fines) and the "jatkon" (read: afterparty) begins

We are not going to go into detail about how afterparties work, because I hope that you know this At most probably you will wake up some morning with some "morkkis" (moral hangover), but then just think that they happen to to most people! The most important thing is that you have fun and respect the others!

Those are the most important things, not that hard right? Just go with the flow and enjoy how your table company becomes blurrier and more beautiful.

NB! SHS is a student union free from illegal drugs and harassment, and this applies to all events. If you violate this, there will be harsh disciplinary measures.

Orbi – all SHS events in one place

SHS uses Orbi, an app that makes it easier for you as a student to take part in student life! Orbi collects all important information about SHS’s events and benefits in one place. As an SHS member, you will receive an invitation to the SHS Membership via your student email, which you need in order to register for events whose tickets are sold through the app. Download the Orbi app so you don’t miss any events!

Are the student events mandatory?

No, but it is highly encouraged to attend as many as you can! This way you will get most out of your gulishöst. Additionally, going to events = get gulispoäng (read: gulispoints) to secure your overalls at the end of gulishöst (you will get more info on this later!)

Does Hanken have a library?

Yes! You can apply for a library card on Hanken’s webpage and pick it up from the library.

What

if I fail a course?

Sometimes sh*t happens and you fail a course. It really isn’t a big deal, it just means that you have to repeat it the following year Still, you should try your best not to fail, since some courses are mandatory for the exchange application etc.

Is it okay if I don’t drink alcohol?

Totally fine! Many students don’t drink, and there’s no pressure. Almost every event has non-alcoholic options, and no one’s fun depends on what’s in their cup

What is a “Sångbok”?

A sångbok (read: songbook) is a book filled with snapsvisor = drinking songs, which are sung at all the sitzes (=parties). You can get your own from IB. It is also a tradition to pass around your songbook and let your friends write lovely (or not so lovely) greetings on the pages. Always fun to wake up the next day and try to decode the drunken scribbles all over the pages.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is an online learning platform that is used at Hanken (Think Google classroom)

Is it hard to balance social life and studies?

Sometimes it may feel like you are running out of minutes in a day - that is completely normal The start of your studies can be extremely busy, with all the events, deadlines and other aspects of your life. Just try your best (and maybe invest in a calendar) Maybe you don’t need to get a 5 from every course!

Is

lecture attendance mandatory?

Depends on the course Professors will communicate this at the beginning of each course. It is recommended to attend lectures, even when not mandatory This will help you not fall behind!

What the f*ck??

This is a thought shared by many freshers. We know that all this information may seem extremely overwhelming, but just relax! It will all clear up as your studies progress.

How do exams work?

Exam weeks are at the end of each teaching period. You may have sit-in exams, where you have four hours to write (usually done on paper) Some courses offer Eexams, where you can book your own time-slot for the Examinarium (read more from Hanken’s webpages). Sitin exams have two retakes and E-exams have one. NB! Remember to sign up for the exams in time, since late regristrations are not accepted!
