2018 saw a significant increase in initiatives in the field of African photography. For example, Bank Vontobel's second A New Gaze Award focused on contemporary African photography, and the Nuku Festival established a platform for photography in Ghana. In Rwanda, the Kigali Photo Festival took place for the first time, and in Bamako, Mali, a new generation has taken the reins of the oldest photography event on the African continent, Les Rencontres de Bamako - Biennale de la Photographie. It is gratifying to see that the opportunities for photographers working on the African continent to make their work public are continuing to increase.

The number of entries for the eighth edition of the international CAP Prize has also risen to around 1200. In addition, we noticed a significant increase in quality, as well as more profound storytelling in many of the projects submitted this year compared to in previous years.

Since 2012, the CAP Prize has been aimed at artists whose work is either created in an African country or is concerned with a diaspora of the continent. The aim of the prize is to promote African photography within the art world and to gain more publicity for artists who deal with the African continent. Many of the 6,200 works submitted since the first edition were long-term projects that were created over months or years. We are convinced that these pictures reflect the authors’ profound engagement with their chosen themes. The works leave a lasting impression and help to convey a nuanced image of Africa, allowing the viewer to understand the continent in all its complexity.

In the eighth year of the CAP Prize, we received applications from 77 countries. Almost 70 percent of the applications came from participants from African countries. The five winners were selected via an online process by a jury consisting of 19 international experts

in photography. In 2019, the prize will consist of a series of international exhibitions conducted in collaboration with festivals and institutions whose aim is to network artists and bring African photography into focus worldwide.

We are delighted that our project is developing so successfully and congratulate all the prize winners on behalf of the entire jury on their victory.

Le nombre de candidatures pour la huitième édition du Prix international CAP est également passé à environ 1200. En outre, une amélioration significative de la qualité et de la profondeur des récits a été constatée dans de nombreux projets soumis par rapport aux années précédentes.

Au cours de la huitième année du Prix CAP, des candidatures ont été reçues de 77 pays.

Près de 70 % des demandes provenaient de participants de pays africains. Les cinq lauréats ont été sélectionnés par un jury composé de 19 experts internationaux en photographie dans le cadre d'un système en ligne.

En 2019, le prix consistera en une série d'expositions internationales en collaboration avec des festivals et des institutions dont le but est de mettre en réseau les artistes et de mettre la photographie africaine au centre de l'attention mondiale.

Es ist erfreulich zu sehen, dass die Möglichkeiten für Fotografinnen und Fotografen, die sich mit den afrikanischen Kontinent beschäftigen, ihre Arbeit publik zu machen, weiter zunehmen.

Auch die Zahl der Einreichungen zur achten Ausgabe des internationalen CAP Preises hat auf rund 1200 zugenommen.

Außerdem machte sich gegenüber den Vorjahren eine deutliche Steigerung der Qualität und profunderes Story-Telling in vielen eingereichten Projekten bemerkbar.

Der CAP Preis richtet sich seit 2012 an Künstlerinnen und Künstler, deren Werk in einem afrikanischen Land entstanden ist oder sich mit einer Diaspora des Kontinents beschäftigt. Ziel des Preises ist es, afrikanische Fotografie in der Kunstwelt zu fördern und mehr Öffentlichkeit für Kunstschaffende zu erlangen,

die sich mit dem afrikanischen Kontinent befassen. Viele der seit der ersten Ausgabe rund 6.200 eingereichten Arbeiten waren Langzeitprojekte, die über Monate oder Jahre entstanden sind. Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass sich in diesen Bildern eine tiefgründige Auseinandersetzung der Autorinnen und Autoren mit der gewählten Thematik widerspiegelt. Die Werke hinterlassen einen nachhaltigen Eindruck beim Betrachter und tragen dazu bei, ein nuanciertes Bild Afrikas zu vermitteln und den Kontinent in seiner Komplexität zu verstehen.

Im achten Jahr des CAP Preises gingen Bewerbungen aus 77 Ländern ein. Knapp 70 Prozent der Bewerbungen kamen von Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern aus afrikanischen Ländern. Die fünf Gewinnerinnen und Gewinner wurden von einer Jury, bestehend aus 19 internationalen Expertinnen und Experten der Fotografie, in einem Online-Verfahren bestimmt.

#i focuses on the youth of Johannesburg, aged 15 to 23: a generation that did not grow up under apartheid, and who have the ability to access and communicate using technologies that integrate them within a larger global community. Having different historical experiences to those of their parents, they have their own visions and expectations of themselves and of South Africa.

Jodi Bieber collaborated with a wide range of 45 young people over a period of three years starting in 2016 – people from different cultures, income groups and areas – to produce a portraiture project that expresses the young people’s visions of themselves and their country. These visions are expressed in their words, their own photographs from their phones, and the portraits she took of each individual. Jodi Bieber took on this project because she believes that young people can lead the future with new narratives. The older

generation's lived experience has been defined in large part by living through apartheid in South Africa, and – through extensive interviews with the young people on this project – the sentiments that were echoed involved the desire for fresh conversations, new ways of being, the right to live their lives and create their own stories.

As is the case in any nation in any part of the world, in order for South Africa to move forward, new ways of being and seeing the world need to be embraced. #i se concentre sur les jeunes de Johannesburg, âgés de 15 à 23 ans : une génération qui n'a pas grandi sous l'apartheid, et qui a accès aux technologies de communication qui l'intègrent dans une communauté mondiale plus large. Ayant des expériences historiques différentes de celles de leurs parents, ils ont leurs propres visions et attentes d’euxmêmes et de l'Afrique du Sud.

Jodi Bieber a collaboré pendant trois ans, à partir de 2016, avec un large éventail de 45 jeunes de différentes cultures, niveaux de revenu et régions - pour produire un projet de portraits qui exprime les visions qu’ont les jeunes d’eux-mêmes et de leur pays. Ces visions s'expriment dans les mots des jeunes, leurs propres photos prises à partir de leur téléphone et les portraits qu'elle a photographiés de chaque individu. Jodi Bieber s'est lancée dans ce projet parce qu'elle croit que les jeunes peuvent diriger l'avenir avec de nouveaux récits.

L'expérience de la génération plus âgée est façonnée par l'apartheid en Afrique du Sud. Au cours d'entretiens approfondis avec les jeunes, il est apparu clairement que les mots qui résonnent dans l'auditoire appellent de nouvelles conversations, de nouveaux modes de vie et la création d'une histoire qui leur est propre.

größere globale Gemeinschaft integrieren. Sie haben andere historische Erfahrungen als ihre Eltern und haben ihre eigenen Visionen und Erwartungen an sich selbst und an Südafrika.

Jodi Bieber arbeitete ab 2016 über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren mit 45 jungen Menschen aus verschiedenen Kulturen, Einkommensgruppen und Kommunen zusammen, um ein Porträtprojekt zu entwickeln, das die Vorstellungen junger Menschen von sich selbst und ihrem Land zum Ausdruck bringt.

Diese Visionen kommen in den Worten der Jugendlichen, ihren eigenen Handy-Fotos und den Porträts, die Jodi Bieber von jedem Einzelnen aufgenommen hat, zum Ausdruck. Bieber hat das Projekt gestartet, weil sie glaubt, dass junge Menschen mit neuen Ideen in die Zukunft führen können. Die Erfahrung der älteren Generation ist geprägt durch die Apartheid in Südafrika. Durch ausführliche Interviews mit den jungen Menschen wurde klar, dass die Worte, die widerhallen nach frischen Gesprächen, neuen Lebensweisen und nach der Gestaltung einer eigenen Geschichte verlangen.

Damit Südafrika, wie jede andere Nation in irgendeinem Teil der Welt, vorankommt, müssen neue Weisen die Welt zu sehen und zu leben eingeschlagen werden.

Twins are in league with demons, they herald disaster, and must be ostracised or even killed. This was once a widespread belief, and not just in Africa. Twins mean twice as much luck, twice as much fertility and twice as much love. Or so goes the fundamentally changed interpretation that is now widespread among the Yoruba in south-western Nigeria. So many twins are born here – more than anywhere else – that the small town of Igbo-Ora, located north of Lagos, has adopted the title of Twin Capital of the World.

In their twins research, the two photographers, Sanne de Wilde and Bénédicte Kurzen, relied on staging techniques that are very different but at the same time showcase their characteristic sense of flair and spectacle, emphasizing both traditional and symbolic colors. The pair also made use of blending and, of course, reflections. Yet the pairs of twins in Land of Ibeji always have something fragile about them, conveying a con-

spiratorial closeness that also manifests in the idea that twins share one soul. All the protagonists seem to be preoccupied by an atmosphere of contemplation regarding the interplay between attachment and individuality. By seeing themselves reflected in the other, they reflect upon themselves.

Les jumeaux sont de connivence avec les démons, annonciateurs d'un désastre, et doivent être ostracisés ou même tués. C'était autrefois une croyance répandue, et pas seulement en Afrique.

Les jumeaux signifient deux fois plus de chance, deux fois plus de fertilité et deux fois plus d'amour. C'est du moins la lecture fondamentalement différente qui est aujourd'hui répandue chez les Yoruba dans le sud-ouest du Nigeria.

Ici naissent tant de jumeaux, comme nulle part ailleurs, que la petite ville d'Igbo-Ora, au nord de Lagos, se pare même du titre de "capitale mondiale des jumeaux".

Dans leurs recherches sur les jumeaux, les deux photographes, Sanne de Wilde et Bénédicte Kurzen, se sont appuyées sur des techniques de mise en scène très différentes tout en mettant en valeur leur sens du flair et du spectacle, accentuant les couleurs traditionnelles et symboliques.

La paire a également utilisé les superpositions et, bien sûr, les reflets.

Pourtant, les ensembles de jumeaux de la Terre d'Ibeji ont toujours quelque chose de fragile, véhiculant une proximité conspiratrice qui se manifeste aussi dans l'idée que les jumeaux partagent une seule âme. Cette atmosphère de contemplation à travers l'interaction de la connectivité et de l'individualité semble occuper tous les protagonistes.

En se reflétant dans l'autre, ils réfléchissent sur eux-mêmes.

Zwillinge sind mit Dämonen im Bunde, künden von Unheil, müssen ausgegrenzt oder gar getötet werden. Das war ein weit verbreiteter Glaube, nicht nur in Afrika. Zwillinge bedeuten doppeltes Glück, doppelte Fruchtbarkeit, doppelte Liebe.

So jedenfalls die grundlegend gewandelte Lesart, die heute bei den Yoruba im Südwesten

Nigerias verbreitet ist. Hier werden so viele Zwillinge geboren, wie nirgendwo sonst, so dass sich das Städtchen Igbo-Ora nördlich von Lagos sogar mit dem Titel „Welthauptstadt der Zwillinge“ schmückt.

Die beiden Fotografinnen Sanne de Wilde und Bénédicte Kurzen setzten bei ihrer Zwillingserforschung auf sehr unterschiedliche und zugleich gewohnt effektfreudige Inszenierungen, die die traditionellen und symbolträchtigen Farben betonen, auf Überblendungen und selbstverständlich auf Spiegelungen.

Zugleich haben die Paare in Land of Ibeji jedoch stets etwas Fragiles, vermitteln eine verschworene Nähe, die sich auch in der Vorstellung manifestiert, dass sich Zwillinge eine Seele teilen. Diese Atmosphäre von Kontemplation über das Wechselspiel von Verbundenheit und Individualität scheint alle Protagonisten zu beschäftigen.

Indem sie sich im anderen spiegeln, reflektieren sie über sich selbst.

Twins with a crown of Christmas lights in Calabar Destination Number Three. In 1876, Mary Slessor, a Scottish Presbyterian missionary, set foot in West Africa. She is well known for having stopped the practice of the infanticide of twins among the Ibibio people, an ethnic group in southeastern Nigeria.

She was able to shift the perception of twins from negative to positive. Calabar has now been named the Home of Twins by the twin foundation, also known as the Mary Slessor Twin Club, which unites twins all over Cross River State. Twins pose for the photographers. The Vine Heritage Home Foundation is an orphanage situated in Gwagwalada, situated a one-hour drive from the Federal Capital, Abuja. Two missionaries created a shelter for children whose lives were endangered by the infanticide practices performed by the neighbouring Bassa communities. If a mother dies during child birth or while nursing a baby, the baby is considered evil and

must therefore be buried (alive) with the deceased mother. Over 70% of the children currently living in Vine Heritage Home were rescued for this very reason. Twins are killed shortly after birth; they are left to starve, poisoned, or buried alive. The government agents struggle to stop the practice. From Land of Ibeji, 2018

The photographer from Johannesburg could belong to the age group that Jodi Bieber had in mind, yet here, he is reporting on the essence of his own existence. The energy this unlocks makes way for innovations of an entirely different kind. The very title Slaghuis, which conjures images of a slaughterhouse or, in a broader sense, a massacre, makes it clear that there is no room for hopes and dreams here. The artist’s sense of shame and despair regarding the space in which he grew up has given rise to anger and rage.

Growing up in a house with a tavern, he was confronted with violence and schizophrenia early on. As part of the pub, this home could never be a secure place of refuge. So where should he escape to? Perhaps his mind could have been a place of refuge, but he felt that even his mind was wounded.

Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo now uses the medium of photographic collage in minimalistic

compositions to roughly and rawly get to the heart of violence and hopelessness. The result is a series of oppressive visual spotlights that gives the impression that life is slipping out of focus and is on the verge of destruction.

Le titre même de Slaghuis, qui nous rappelle un abattoir ou, dans un sens plus large, un massacre, indique clairement qu'il ne peut être question ici d'espoirs rêveurs. La honte et le désespoir sur l'espace dans lequel il a grandi ont créé la colère et la rage. Élevé dans une maison de taverne, il a été confronté très tôt à la violence et à la schizophrénie de la société. Faisant partie intégrante du bistro,

cette maison ne pouvait pas être un refuge sûr. Mais alors où s'échapper ? Peut-être que son esprit aurait pu être un lieu de refuge, mais il sentait que même son esprit était blessé.

Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo utilise ici le médium du collage photographique dans des compositions minimalistes pour aller grossièrement et brutalement au cœur de la violence et du désespoir. Il en résulte des reflets visuels oppressants qui donnent l'impression que la vie se floute et qu'elle est sur le point de disparaître.

Fast gehört der Fotograf aus Johannesburg zu jener Altersgruppe, die Jodi Bieber im Blick hatte, doch er ist es nun selbst, der über seine existentielle Existenz berichtet. Und was sich da an Energie auftut, bricht sich Bahn in eine ganz andere Richtung. Schon der Titel Slaghuis, der an ein Schlachthaus oder im weiteren Sinne an ein Gemetzel gemahnt, macht deutlich, dass hier von verträumten Hoffnungen nicht die Rede sein kann. Scham und Verzweiflung über den Raum, in dem er aufwuchs, erzeugten Ärger und Wut. Aufgewachsen in einem Haus mit Taverne, wurde er früh mit

der Gewalt und Schizophrenie der Gesellschaft konfrontiert.

Ein sicherer Zufluchtsort konnte dieses Heim als Teil der Kneipe nicht sein. Doch wohin entkommen? Vielleicht hätte sein Verstand ein Zufluchtsort sein können, aber auch den empfand er als verletzt.

Nun nutzt Thembinkosi Hlatshwayo das Medium der fotografischen Collage, um – rau und rüde – in minimalistischen Kompositionen die Gewalt und die Aussichtslosigkeit auf den Punkt zu bringen. Entstanden sind beklemmende visuelle Schlaglichter, die den Eindruck erwecken, das Leben sei aus dem Fokus geraten und befinde sich unmittelbar Rande der Auslöschung.

Abdo Shanan’s black and white and color photographs cannot be ordered into a logical chain of associations. Rather, they are erratic and thus unsettling.

The subtext is provided by the photographer both in the title Dry and in his thoughts on the inherent solitariness of the individual. Perhaps the I is an island after all, and other people are the ocean. But if the I is an island, doesn’t that mean that other people are also islands?

The notion of Algeria as a multicultural country led Shanan to question the relationship between personal history and the present. And what medium is better suited to such a line of interrogation than photography?

Our unconditionally subjective view of the subjects, who either respond inquiringly to our gaze or avoid it, contrasts with found objects and fragments of landscapes that seem as if they were relics of a life, collected over decades in a shoebox.

That shoebox has now been

opened like a Pandora’s box in order to expose one thing in particular: the infinite emptiness between the images, which become islands in an ocean of forgetting.

Les photographies en noir et blanc et en couleur d'Abdo Shanan ne forment pas une chaîne logique d'associations, mais elles sont plutôt nerveuses et donc troublantes. Le thème sous-jacent est évoqué par le photographe à la fois dans le titre Dry et dans ses pensées sur la solitude inhérente de l'individu. Peut-être que le je est une île après tout, et les autres sont l'océan. Mais si le je est une île, cela ne veut-il pas dire que les autres sont aussi des îles ?

L’Algérie en tant que pays multiculturel a conduit le photographe à s'interroger sur la relation entre l'histoire personnelle et le présent. Et quel médium serait le mieux adapté à une telle question que la photographie ?

Notre vision subjective inconditionnelle des sujets, qui parfois répondent à notre regard avec curiosité ou bien l'évitent, contraste avec les objets trouvés et les fragments de paysages qui semblent être des reliques d'une vie, recueillis pendant des décennies dans une boîte à chaussures qui est maintenant ouverte comme la boîte de Pandore pour montrer une chose en particulier : le vide infini entre les images, qui deviennent à leur tour des îles dans un océan de l’oubli.

Und welches Medium wäre für solch eine Fragestellung besser geeignet als die Fotografie?

Die bedingungslos subjektive Sicht auf Menschen, die unseren Blick forschend erwidern oder verweigern, kontrastiert mit Fundstücken und Landschaftsfragmenten, die wirken, als seien sie Relikte eines Lebens, gesammelt über Jahrzehnte in einem Schuhkarton, der nun als Pandoras Box geöffnet wird, um vor allem eines zu zeigen: die unendliche Leere zwischen den Bildern, die ihrerseits zu Inseln werden in einem Ozean des Vergessens.

Den Subtext liefert der Fotograf sowohl mit dem Titel Dry, als auch mit seinen Gedanken über das immanent Solitäre des Individuums. Ich, das ist vielleicht doch eine Insel, und die anderen sind der Ozean. Doch wenn Ich eine Insel ist, müssten nicht die anderen auch Inseln sein?

Algerien als ein multikulturelles Land dient dem Fotografen dazu, nach dem Verhältnis zwischen persönlicher Geschichte und Gegenwart zu fragen.

Aware that he belonged to one of the first generations of South Africans to grow up post-Apartheid, Jansen van Staden turned his attention to questioning tradition and trauma in his homeland.

When he was 25 years old, his father died in a microlight accident. He found a letter in his father’s estate addressed to a therapist. In this letter, his father spoke of his experiences at the age of 17 in the South African Border War and the subsequent associations to killing; experiences that followed him throughout his life, but that he at the same time had kept hidden from his family.

This set out a journey for Jansen van Staden to trace the history and memories that he had of his father and his archives. The journey also involved road trips to his father’s family and to Kenya where his father’s accident took place. With the sensor that he retrieved from his father’s

camera that survived the accident, he now looks at the entanglement of the ideologies of apartheid, war and violence as a form of intergenerational trauma; a complicated trauma that he inherited. This research, re-enactment and retracing deals with the acceptance and rejection of memory and love.

Conscient d'appartenir à l'une des premières générations sud-africaines qui ont grandi après l'apartheid, Jansen van Staden s'est tourné vers la remise en question de la tradition et du traumatisme dans son pays natal.

The CAP Prize 2019 jury is comprised of personalities from the international photography community, bringing together curators, publishers, and artists. It was of the utmost importance to the organisers that the jury be as international as possible in order to avoid a Eurocentric view of African photography. The jury members for the eighth edition of the CAP Prize come from 16 different countries and are of 14 different nationalities. The jury evaluated hundreds of portfolios in terms of concept, context, and method. All works had to either have been produced on the African continent or deal with an African diaspora.

Le jury du Prix CAP 2019 est composé de personnalités de la scène photographique internationale, réunissant curateurs, éditeurs et artistes. Il était de la plus haute importance pour les organisateurs que le jury soit aussi international que possible, afin d’éviter une vision eurocentrique de la photogra-

phie africaine. Les membres du jury de la septième édition du Prix CAP proviennent de 16 pays différents et sont de 14 nationalités différentes. Le jury a évalué des centaines de portfolios sur les critères de concept, de contexte et de la méthode.

Tous les travaux devaient soit avoir été produits sur le continent africain soit traiter d’une diaspora africaine.

Die Jury des CAP Preises 2019 setzt sich aus Persönlichkeiten der internationalen Fotografieszene zusammen; sie vereint Kuratorinnen, Verleger, Künstlerinnen und Künstler. Den Organisatoren ist es ein Anliegen, die Jury so international wie möglich zu gestalten, um beispielsweise eine eurozentristische Sicht auf die afrikanische Fotografie zu vermeiden.

The Retrospective

The first edition of the CAP Prize was announced in 2012 under the name of POPCAP. The competition received 140 applications from 39 countries, and a panel of nine jurors evaluated the entries. The 2012 edition culminated in an open-air exhibition in Basel, Switzerland, which took place during the Art Basel international art fair.

The venture’s initial success as an evaluation of contemporary photography on the African continent encouraged initiator Benjamin Füglister and cultural manager Angela Nyffeler to continue the project the following year.

The winners of the CAP Prize 2013 were selected from 360 applications from 57 countries.

The winning works were presented as large-format posters at Münsterplatz during Art Basel. The exhibition was later shown in Dublin, Limerick and Cork in cooperation with the PhotoIreland Festival, as well as at, as well as at the LagosPhoto Festival in Nigeria.

The 2014 edition of the CAP Prize received an overwhelming 720 entries from 88 countries.

The award-winning works were presented at seven international photography exhibitions, including the trans-disciplinary IAF Basel – Festival for Contemporary Art. The CAP Prize 2014 not only aroused the interest of numerous photography-specific media; larger media houses such as CNN and The Guardian also published articles on the winning works for the first time.

The prize continued to garner more recognition and success in its fourth year, and, in 2019, we can now look back proudly on an eight-year history involving over 50 exhibitions worldwide. Thus far, the project has attracted a total of roughly 6200 submissions, with 1200 submissions received in 2019.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors have been able to enjoy award-winning African photography thanks to the large-format exhibitions and projections in public space. Numerous

fruitful projects were created in cooperation with various initiatives in the field of African photography. These collaborations resulted in the African Photographic Society, a network organization with the goal of strengthening African photography internationally.

CAP Association About

The CAP Association was founded in November 2016 as a non-profit association based in Basel, Switzerland. The purpose of the association is to carry out projects on photography in African contexts. For example, the CAP Association has organized the annual CAP Prize for Contemporary African Photography (named POPCAP, piclet.org Prize Africa until 2016) since 2012, as well as the resulting IAF Basel - Festival for Contemporary Art. In addition, the CAP Association has published the limited photography edition, Edition POPCAP, since 2015, which includes pictures of the winners of the CAP Prize.

Since 2016, the CAP Association and the CAP Academy have offered workshops and coaching sessions on photography in African contexts, conducted in cooperation with photography institutions around the world.

L’Association CAP a été fondée en novembre 2016 en tant qu'association à but non lucratif à Bâle, en Suisse. Le but de l'association est de réaliser des projets sur la photographie dans des contextes africains.

Depuis 2012, par exemple, l’Association CAP organise le Prix CAP pour la photographie africaine contemporaine (POPCAP jusqu'en 2016, prix piclet. org Afrique) et le Festival d'art contemporain de l'IAF Basel. Par ailleurs, l’Association CAP publie depuis 2015 l'édition limitée Edition POPCAP avec des photos des lauréats du Prix CAP. Depuis 2016, l’Association CAP offre des ateliers et du coaching pour la photographie dans des contextes africains avec l'Académie CAP en coopération avec des institutions photographiques à travers le monde.

Die CAP Association wurde im November 2016 als gemeinnütziger Verein mit Sitz in Basel in der Schweiz gegründet. Der Verein verfolgt den Zweck der Ausführung von Projekten zu Fotografie in afrikanischen Kontexten. So veranstaltet die CAP Association seit 2012 jährlich den CAP Preis für zeitgenössische afrikanische Fotografie (Bis 2016 POPCAP, piclet.org Prize Africa) und das daraus hervorgegangene IAF Basel – Festival für zeitgenössische Kunst. Außerdem verlegt die CAP Association seit 2015 die limitierte Fotografie-Edition Edition POPCAP mit Bildern der Gewinnerinnen und Gewinner des CAP Preises.
