Hope for a Better Tomorrow If you’ve visited St. Vincent de Paul’s main campus recently, you’ve undoubtedly noticed a growing level of excitement as we approach the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for our new residence and resource center located immediately across the street at 320 W. Watkins Road. What we will be celebrating Friday morning, May 18, is more than a building. It is the culmination of a two-year long capital campaign, and the realization of a dream – a dream that St. Vincent de Paul could bring compassion, understanding, and hope for a better tomorrow to thousands of our neighbors who live in the economic margins of our community. In addition to providing a beautiful transitional home for 60 older and disabled men and women, our new building will also offer a broad spectrum of services (e.g. showers, clothing, toiletries, transportation, job assistance, addiction treatment, financial literacy training, and rent and utility assistance) to the city’s homeless and low-income families and individuals. This is an exciting time in the 72-year history of St. Vincent de Paul in Arizona. Earlier this year, we celebrated the opening of the Rob & Melani Walton Urban Farm, which specializes in sustainable, ecologically-sound farming. Our urban farm produces hundreds of pounds of high-quality organic fruits, vegetables, and produce every week, which our kitchen uses to produce healthier meals for our dining room guests.

New building located on the northeast corner of Watkins Rd. and 3rd Ave.

Immediately after our new building opens, we will begin the expansion of our SVdP Virginia G. Piper Medical & Dental Clinic, that will enable us to partner with the Mayo Clinic and other medical and dental service providers to better meet the needs of uninsured and underinsured patients. The final piece of our capital campaign was the acquisition last year of 1.62 acres of land immediately east of our new building. This acquisition will provide for the expansion of our services in the coming years, as new social needs identify themselves. That’s one way St. Vincent de Paul differentiates itself from many non-profit organizations. We don’t simply chase funding. We look for social needs that aren’t being met, and we try to be part of the solution. As our founder, Frederick Ozanam, said almost two-hundred years ago, “No form of charity is foreign to the Society.” Of course, none of the above would have been possible without the generous support of our many benefactors. We will be eternally grateful to the countless donors who embraced our vision and helped make our dream come true. For the first time in our history, we had multiple donors, both individuals and organizations, who made gifts in excess of $1 million. We also had many others who reached deep into their pockets to give $10 more than they thought they could afford. Each of you played a key role in the future transformation of countless lives. For that I thank you, and I humbly ask for your continued support. The need in our community is so great, and I can’t think of a single organization that does more to meet that need.

UNDER ONE

ROOF

After driving over ruts and rocks, the members of the St. Jude Conference of St. Vincent de Paul had arrived. Imelda Torres-San Jose and Sister Catherine France were in Tuba City for a Home Visit, or rather, a “Hogan Visit.” A Hogan is a traditional Navajo hut made of wood, logs and earth. During the visit, Vincentian volunteers Imelda and Sister Catherine realized that the family was in dire need of a new roof. The woman of the home, Cecilia, did not ask for a roof directly, and the damage wasn’t the reason for the home visit. But, she took the opportunity to ask for wood. During the visit, she mentioned that if the plastic, which covered about a one-third of the ceiling, was pulled back at night, the stars would be visible. It was then when the volunteers observed another spot of the roof heavy with water damage. The timber above the plastic was also visibly rotting. There were openings covered by a curtain that moved with the breeze, and getting into the Hogan was a challenge because Cecilia had tried to stack rocks, but they were partially covered by sand. But, this was her home. She had moved into the Hogan just a few months ago and found the roof in bad condition. This Hogan belonged to her mother, and she was raised there, so she naturally came back to it when she was in need of housing. The steps and windows were also in need of repair. This became more than just a Home Visit. It became a true Vincentian Family Project. Mr. Larry Lucero, an expert in construction and repair of Hogans, worked tirelessly to provide Cecilia and her grandchildren with a new roof to provide a warm and safe home. He began by removing the entire roof and worked his way to completion. As soon as it was completed, a fire was set and the interior was fit to stay warm. Throughout the building process, Sister Catherine said the emotion going around was, “Primarily gratitude. The lady [Cecilia] often said said ‘Thank you,’ but [was] also [in] disbelief that it was happening, and [would] also worry each day when the builder left,” she recalled. Two questions Sister Catherine recalls Cecilia asking include, "Will he come back?,” and “Will the roof be done in time for the cold winter?” Mr. Larry Lucero always came back and the roof of the Hogan was finished in time before the winter weather hit. The combined finances of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Daughters of Charity made the new roof a reality. Story courtesy of Sister Catherine France.

SVdP’s Urban Farm

LAYS DOWN NEW ROOTS After a year of preparation, the Rob and Melani Walton Urban Farm is officially open!

Thanks to generous community support, the Rob and Melani Walton Urban Farm has been expanded to its full potential. From entrance to exit, this two-acre lot has been completely revitalized. New pathways and signage invite visitors to explore the farm’s expanded offerings which include an updated aquaponics system and new public gathering spaces where the community can attend classes, hear a lecture, or see a demonstration on sustainable practices like composting. These enhancements not only promote community sustainability, encourage volunteerism and provide educational opportunities, but they ultimately increase production and access to fresh local products to feed more in our community.

To celebrate the grand opening, St. Vincent de Paul held a special celebration. The event offered guests farm fresh refreshments prepared by SVdP’s kitchen, composting demonstrations from our knowledgeable staff, tours of our aquaponics greenhouse and more! We also invited each guest to share their hopes for SVdP and the Rob and Melani Walton Urban Farm by writing a wish on seed paper and hanging it on our ‘Tree of Hope.’ As the paper disintegrates, seeds will be released, allowing a new plant, and our guest’s wish, to become a permanent part of the farm. We invite you to spend a day volunteering in the new Rob and Melani Walton Urban Farm! For more information, please contact Volunteer Services at (602) 261-6886.

FARM to FORK

Healthy Food Recipe Series

COOKING WITH:

In each issue of the Vincentian Connection, we share a new healthy recipe created by SVdP's Head Chef Chris Hoffman, who will be using produce harvested from our Urban Farm. In addition to the recipe, you’ll also learn the health benefits of the fresh ingredients, provided by our Family Wellness Program.

Kale, Broccoli and Carrots

Use Fresh Garden Vegetables to Make Veggie Burger Sliders A new season is upon us, and with that comes new foods and rituals. The warmer temperatures and longer days allow for time to be spent outside planting and harvesting in backyard or community gardens. It’s a wonderful time to spring clean your diet and incorporate fresh, seasonal produce like carrots and broccoli. With this in mind, we are a featuring a healthy, delicious and meatless recipe: Farm-Fresh Veggie Burger Sliders. Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Plus, veggie burgers are full of flavor, and are packed with nutrients, protein and vitamins that come from the vegetables you add. In this recipe, St. Vincent de Paul’s Head Chef, Chris Hoffman, used sustainably fresh ingredients from our Urban Farm to bring the most nutrition to our palate. From onions, broccoli and kale, to fresh carrots pulled straight from the Urban Farm, this recipe promotes vitamin intake, 20/20 vision and a healthier take on the typical burger.

Rebuilding Lives

BRICK BY BRICK

Earlier last year, nearly 200 community leaders, donors, volunteers, staff members and other special guests gathered to celebrate a milestone event in St. Vincent de Paul’s history—the first groundbreaking on a new building on our campus in over 25 years. And now, the project is nearly complete! Our doors will open almost exactly one year from our groundbreaking last May. Our new building will house Ozanam Manor shelter and our Special Ministries outreach to men, women and children experiencing homelessness. This development will enhance St. Vincent de Paul’s campus and increase our ability to feed, clothe, house and heal those who are struggling in our community. Building on our existing strengths as an organization and expanding collaborations with community partners, we not only will serve more people, but also address some of the physical, economic and emotional barriers that prevent people from rebuilding their lives on their own.

New Building, New Staff Julia Matthies

Director, Ozanam Manor

As the new Director of Ozanam Manor, Julia has found that the best way to learn the ropes of a new job is by diving in. While her job focuses on the day-to-day tasks of overseeing the shelter, she says her most important role is being what she calls the, “chief compassion officer.” Julia’s entire career has focused on providing help to those who need it. Most recently, Julia worked as a clinical director for Terros. Prior to that, she worked in the social work department of the state hospital for over six years. But, Julia always felt the desire to go back and work with those experiencing homelessness and Ozanam Manor allows her to connect, on a personal level, with the people in our community that need help. It’s this link that is so important for her in order to keep fighting to end homelessness one person at a time.

“We’re not called to sit on the couch and just idly love people. We’re called to go out and love people, and to me, I just needed to live my life in a way that put that into concrete action.”

Cherylyn Strong

Director, Special Ministries Cherylyn has been the manager of St. Vincent de Paul’s Special Ministries for, what she calls, “Eight marvelous months.” Between supervision and development of expanded programs, Cherylyn guides her staff and volunteers to serve with integrity in order to meet the mission of St. Vincent de Paul. Originally from Tennessee, she ran a social service agency in Massachusetts, where she lived for 28 years. After relocating to Phoenix, she worked with the Valley of The Sun United Way for the past five years and then became part of the St. Vincent de Paul family. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” And Cherylyn believes it was always her purpose in life to serve. From befriending the friendless in grade school, to marching in the ‘I Am a Man March’ with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Cherylyn has found that her passion lies within activism and service.

“I don’t know that [getting into service] is something that I knew, I think it’s just a way of being and I think it’s who I am, and that I’ve been this way forever.”

INSPIRING HOPE AND ENCOURAGING CHANGE Celebrating 10 years of the “Never Give Up” program

Celebrity Fight Night and its founder, Jimmy Walker, have been longtime supporters of St. Vincent de Paul. Over the course of our ten year history, Jimmy has supported St. Vincent de Paul in many ways, but perhaps his most important way is through the "Never Give Up" program. Every Monday morning in our Human Services Campus dining room, Jimmy and a guest offer words of encouragement and inspiration to many men and women experiencing homelessness. Each message is meant to remind our guests that no matter how difficult life may be, giving up is never the answer. To mark the ten year anniversary of the "Never Give Up" program, the Celebrity Fight Night Foundation purchased and donated 1,000 steaks to St. Vincent de Paul. Along with this generous gift, celebrity chefs Chris Bianco, Mark Tarbell, Marc Lupino, and Vincent Guerithault volunteered to do the grilling! After an afternoon of cooking, Jimmy and the chefs stayed and served dinner. Seeing the thankful faces of our guests as they received their meals is something we will never forget.

Thank you to Jimmy Walker, the Celebrity Fight Night Foundation, and all the chefs who made this event possible.

CREATING CHANGE

One At a Time

Story by: Marcelino Quiñonez, SVdP’s Director of Youth Outreach

1 Graduation season is upon us! It’s that time of year when students don caps and gowns, and celebrate another year’s accomplishments. Unfortunately, for many, financial burdens make it impossible to pursue a college education. At St. Vincent de Paul, we believe every young person deserves the chance for a bright future, which is why SVdP’s ‘One At a Time’ scholarship program was founded. This program assists with tuition costs and mentors each student through their college career. Since its infancy, the ‘One At a Time’ scholarship program has assisted over 60 students in attaining a college degree. Reflecting on this incredible feat, SVdP’s Director of Youth Outreach, Marcelino Quiñonez, shares the story of our most recent ‘One At a Time’ graduate, Paola Garcia. On December 11, 2017, Paola Garcia became the 63rd graduate of the ‘One At a Time’ scholarship program at St. Vincent de Paul. Paola earned her bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Communication from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. The ‘One At a Time’ scholarship program was founded in 2001, by longtime Vincentian Terry Wilson, as a way to gently introduce students to life skills that will

3 result in changing their economic future. Most of the scholars in the program are first-generation college students who have big dreams and strong wills to succeed. They benefit greatly from the program structure and emphasis of creating system change through education. Each student is paired with a mentor who listens, guides and encourages their student’s college completion. Andy Romley, a former elementary school teacher, served as Paola’s mentor and was a terrific source of support for her, motivating her to continue to follow her dream of being published. As a result of her mentor’s support, Paola was published several times during her college career, focusing her writing on issues of education and community. Paola was joined at her university graduation by her immediate family, as well as her ‘One At a Time Family’: mentor Andy Romley, program manager Marcelino Quiñonez and program founder Terry Wilson. The ‘One At a Time’ scholarship program is scheduled to graduate six additional students from college this year. These graduates will add to the long list of teachers, engineers, artists and program directors fulfilling their dreams because of the ‘One At a Time’ program. A college degree does not just change the life of the graduate; it changes the life of the family and community of the graduate. Congratulations to Paola and everyone else involved with the ‘One At a Time’ scholarship program.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCES

in the SVdP Virginia G. Piper Dental Clinic

If you stop by St. Vincent de Paul’s Virginia G. Piper Dental Clinic on any given day, make sure to wear your tennis shoes, otherwise you won’t be able to keep up with the staff and volunteers. The speed and precision with which the staff moves around the clinic can be likened to a well-choreographed dance. With each step, a patient is seated, given a comprehensive exam, diagnosed and treated. It’s an impressive feat to witness. But what’s even more impressive is the sheer volume of patients that are seen each year in our clinic. Last year, the dental clinic saw over 8,000 appointments. That’s roughly 30 appointments per day. So, there is a reason why Dr. Ken Snyder and his team are fast on their feet—they have to be. As our Dental Clinic grew over the years, so did the need for help. SVdP’s Dental Director Dr. Snyder realized in order to keep up with the demand for dental care, the clinic required additional support. At the time, with the support of the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation, SVdP was hosting two dental residents who were participating in the A.E.G.D. program. SVdP was providing post-doctoral training within the dental clinic. Under the supervision of Dr. Snyder, the residents were treating patients, and the additional support was making a difference. The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (A.E.G.D) program is unique in concept and design. Created by NYU Langone Health, this year-long program gives residents the opportunity to expand their knowledge of general dentistry by receiving hands-on training in a variety of disciplines within the dental field. The program offers training with specialists in surgical and dental implantation, gum specialty, root canal treatment and orthodontics. Overall, “the program produces a highly skilled and confident dental practitioner, fully equipped to meet the challenges of modern dentistry,” according to their website. With this in mind, Dr. Snyder decided developing the A.E.G.D. program would be beneficial for SVdP. He reached out to a colleague, Dr. Jeffrey Rushlo, who was working in the dental clinic at Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) and asked for his help with the program. That was three and a half years ago.

12

Vincentian CONNECTION May 2018

Since that time, SVdP's Virginia G. Piper Dental Clinic has trained 10 residents and is consistently ranked as one of the top destinations for dental residents. One reason residency positions with SVdP are so sought-after is because Dr. Snyder and Dr. Rushlo have taken the A.E.G.D. program curriculum and expanded upon it. The additional curriculum focuses on essential experiences that the residents are trained in. Those experiences include extraction of wisdom teeth, dental implants, bone grafting, surgery, orthodontics, pedodontics, endodontics and competency with a Co2 laser. “We would like our residents to be trained as super generalists,” explains Dr. Rushlo, “and we think it is important they should be exposed to those experiences.” Students also receive additional technical training on the latest equipment available in the field. “There is such a demand for them [residents] to have the latest technology, which we have,” says Dr. Rushlo. “Overall, it [the additional training] really creates a wonderful learning experience. It challenges our residents because they know they’re going to learn much more than what’s required, and it also provides fantastic one-on-one care with our patients.” Another unique aspect of the A.E.G.D. program at SVdP is the focus on the patient. The residents practice in the Dental Clinic all but two days per month. Residents work with patients from diagnosis through treatment, but occasionally the patient’s treatment extends past the resident’s stay. To make the transition easier, Dr. Snyder and Dr. Rushlo established a week long orientation where current residents meet new residents. This gives the new residents the opportunity to be briefed on cases and get introduced to our systems before hitting the clinic floor. But more importantly, this allows patients to receive consistent care, regardless of who is treating them. “What really makes this program work is the essence of St. Vincent de Paul, and providing help to people that wouldn’t otherwise get it,” explains Dr. Rushlo. “They [the patients] have no insurance. We are seeing patients from our medical clinic, children’s clinic and

ARIZONA’S SPORTS TEAMS GIVE BACK On or off the field or court, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns always make time to give back to the community. This year, St. Vincent de Paul’s Virginia G. Piper Dental Clinic was the recipient of two room makeovers courtesy of the local sports teams. We are so thankful for their generosity and kindness!

our transitional shelter, and at least half of our exams are considered advanced, extensive treatment.” So, not only are residents receiving necessary training to build confidence and expertise in diagnosing, treating and managing dental patients in community, but they are also fulfilling a mission to serve; an important component of the A.E.G.D. program. Since inception, the A.E.G.D. program has made it its mission to serve, “large, ethnically diverse and needy populations by providing comprehensive, high-quality dental care,” an aspect that drew former resident Caris Miller to the program, and subsequently to St. Vincent de Paul. Caris attended the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH), and through the A.E.G.D. program, became a dental resident under Dr. Snyder and Dr. Rushlo—relationships she still has to this day. “Dr. Snyder was like my dad away from home,” Caris recalls. “Dr. Rushlo still gets texts and phone calls from me about complex cases. Whenever I’m taking on a complex surgery or big crown and bridge case, I can hear his voice telling me exactly what I should do next. I owe my career to him!” Caris’ interest in SVdP’s dental clinic developed after she discovered Dr. Rushlo was the head of St. Vincent de Paul’s coveted program. Her classmates called him the, “guru of general dentistry,” and she knew she had to be a part of his team. “The experience is unlike most of the residency programs in the country,” explains Caris. “We had one-on-one interactions whenever we needed them with our mentors. We felt like family. The assistants in the program are top notch.” During Caris’ time at SVdP, she found the A.E.G.D. program affected her in other ways. “Serving the underserved and making an impact in a community have always been the number one reasons why I went into dentistry. You can affect so much positive change in peoples’ lives,” she said. “While completing complex cases towards the end of my residency, it was pretty normal that my patients’ would cry in joy of the outcome. That feeling is unlike any other. The work done at St. Vincent’s creates so much positive change for people and I feel honored to have been part of it.”

Choosing Wellness:

A Smarter Start

How Smart Goals and Small Changes Can Lead to a Healthier Lifestyle Making healthy lifestyle choices is a decision that, in theory, seems easy to achieve. Eat vegetables, exercise and cut back on sugar. This is all useful information. So then, why is it that healthy eating and exercise are such difficult habits to maintain?

“It’s because we don’t make smart goals,” explains Maria Silva, Manager of St. Vincent de Paul’s Family Wellness program. Smart goals are a part of the action plan system that the Family Wellness program uses to help individuals identify obstacles that will prevent them from sticking to their resolutions. “Smart goals are specific, measureable, attainable and timely. If your goal is to lose weight, a smart goal will help you decide how to achieve that weight loss,” Maria continues. “This process allows our students to think through their daily routines and decide how their new goal will fit into their current schedule. If you are not a morning person, don’t work out on the morning. Instead, save your exercise for the evening, when you are more motivated.” Maria’s advice is to, “Examine your day and write down a plan. This alone is scientifically proven to increase the success rate of achieving that goal.” She’s right, as the science supports her statement, as does Matilde Orso. Matilde has been participating in SVdP’s Family Wellness Program for the past six months. Her health had never been top of mind. She had always classified herself as healthy, until her weight began to cause issues for her at work in a restaurant. “During my shifts, I remember that I used to get tired easily,” Matilde recalls. “Then when my legs started hurting, I realized I needed to do something about it [her weight].” After enduring over two years’ worth of pain, Matilde started asking around for advice and a classmate told her about SVdP’s free wellness classes. Matilde decided to check them out. “I thought to myself, “Why not? I might learn something interesting.” I began taking classes at the Wellness Center and that’s when I started making changes.” With the generous support of the Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation, SVdP's Family Wellness Center offers classes focused on prevention

One of the most important things I have learned is about portion control. They [the Family Wellness staff] taught me that I can eat a little bit of everything, but I need to watch my portions of carbs and proteins.

and management of chronic diseases, like obesity. These programs offer participants an educational foundation of good nutrition, physical activity and overall wellness. Individuals, families and children learn to make lifestyle changes with the support of their community and our staff. It was here that Matilde found the help she needed. “Coming to SVdP for these classes has really helped,” Matilde says. “One of the most important things I have learned is about portion control. They [the Family Wellness staff] taught me that I can eat a little bit of everything, but I need to watch my portions of carbs and proteins.” According to National Institute on Aging, healthy dietary guidelines suggests that each day, individuals consume between 5 to 10 ounces of grains, 5 to 7 ounces of protein and no more that 3 cups of dairy foods (preferably fat-free). An easy way to remember these guidelines is by using USDA’s “Choose MyPlate” program. This portion control plate indicates how much of each food group an individual should consume during each meal. It makes healthy eating accessible, and is the preferred method on instruction in SVdP’s Family Wellness Center. For Matilde, incorporating nutritious vegetables was one of her biggest obstacles. She consumed starchy rice and beans with most meals, not realizing that those foods were adding to her weight. However, with some coaching and her smart goals in place, Matilde started to experiment with a variety of vegetables she had never cooked before. “I tried

cooking eggplant,” Matilde says, laughing. “And I don’t fry things anymore.” Matilde also contributes her success to her adding exercise into her daily routine. Due to a back injury, exercise has always been an activity that she had struggled to incorporate. She found that walking for 20 minutes, five days a week left her feeling healthy and invigorated. Matilde has been a student in SVdP’s Family Wellness classes for about six months. During this time, she has lost 14 pounds and experienced a significant increase in her quality of life. “I suffered from leg and foot pain for two years and after two months of being in this program, I didn’t feel the pain anymore,” Matilde recalls. “My life has changed. I feel lighter.” Matilde’s journey, like so many of ours, has not been easy. Some days healthy eating is not always an option, and on other days, getting to the gym is out of the question. The Family Wellness Program teaches that healthy habits are not achieved overnight, but rather with perseverance and a proper support system. For Matilde, being smart about obstacles that could deter her from achieving her goals, led to her success. By modifying her diet and adding an exercise she could participate in, Matilde improved her overall health and wellness. So, if her success story teaches us anything, it’s that smart goals and small changes are the keys to living a healthier life.

BEST WAYS FOR GIVING TO SVDP WITH THE NEW TAX LAW Story by Mike and Rita Hutt

Q: M ike and Rita, what made you decide to join the Servant Leaders Society and share your gifts with St. Vincent de Paul? A: St. Vincent de Paul is a real treasure to our community and we eagerly support all of the important work that they do. We had the opportunity to tour their facilities with Shannon Clancy, the Associate Executive Director, and she introduced us to Steve Zabilski, the Executive Director. Both were very inspiring and have a special place in their hearts for those in need in our community. From touring their food warehouse and dining rooms to their medical and dental clinics, we quickly learned that they operate with amazing efficiency using a small skeleton staff of talented and dedicated staff members, and above all, a large network of skilled and highly-motivated volunteers that are all squarely centered on the core mission. It’s this dedication to the mission and strong motivation that sets the people of SVdP apart and makes them special. We knew we wanted to be a part of this very special place. Q: M ike, as a retired business school professor at ASU and a long-time resident of Arizona, how would you describe SVdP’s role in the community? We have said it often, but can’t say it enough. Without the support of our generous donors and volunteers, St. Vincent de Paul would not be able to provide the services to our neighbors in need. We are truly grateful and want to acknowledge how important your gifts of time, talent and treasure mean to us and those we serve. To do that, we have established a special group called our Servant Leaders Society. Members in this special Society, who generously give $1,000 or more each year, will have opportunities to become more deeply engaged with SVdP.

We had a chance to talk with Servant Leaders Society members, Mike and Rita Hutt, and asked them to share their reasons for belonging to this special group.

Vincentian CONNECTION May 2018

A: SVdP contributes enormous economic value to the city of Phoenix, and to a good portion of the state. It efficiently delivers many services to the working poor and homeless who would be forgotten if not for SVdP. That’s why we support SVdP and encourage others to also lend a hand. That’s also why ASU and Mayo Clinic are partnering with SVdP, launching innovative programs to serve community needs. As a retired business school professor at ASU, I am gratified that ASU has initiated a partnership with SVdP. The partnership aligns nicely with Dr. Michael Crow’s vision for ASU as the New American University with expanded community involvement and social impact. The ASU-SVdP partnership is a “first of its kind” among U.S. universities and it has great promise for our community. Q: I n light of the new tax laws, what are some of the best ways you would suggest to donate to St. Vincent de Paul in 2018? A: In charitable giving, we always make sure that we take full advantage of the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. While widely promoted, this tax credit is used by fewer than 10 percent of Arizona taxpayers. So, how much can I donate at no cost to me? A married couple filing jointly can get a credit for a maximum of $800, while a single taxpayer can get a credit for a maximum of $400. You don’t need to itemize deductions to take advantage of this credit. It’s a way to give a free gift to SVdP to help them meet community needs. As a further enhancement, one donor has pledged to provide up to a $200 match for those who donate at the $1,000 level. So this represents a $1,200 gift to SVdP for an actual cost of $200 (Servant Leader -- $1,000). With the new tax law, fewer people will be able to deduct charitable donations but the AZ tax credit is still in effect and provides a no-cost way to give. In the face of this new challenge, we would encourage the SVdP family of volunteers and friends to pull together and use this tax credit to the max.

Q: D o you have any suggestions for retirees, like yourselves, who want to support SVdP? A: Absolutely! If you are age 70½ or older and have a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you can use your required minimum distribution (RMD) to support SVdP through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). This is a vehicle for charitable giving that you might want to consider. Accountants will tell you that using the QCD is a tax-savvy strategy that allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity like SVdP. The transfer counts as the required minimum distribution without being added to their adjusted gross income. In addition, because the new tax law nearly doubled the standard deduction, fewer people will itemize deductions and you can only deduct charitable contributions if you itemize. But, by using the QCD, you can still take the new expanded standard deduction and reduce your taxable income as well! Also, since Medicare Part B surcharges are based on a sliding income scale, we have found that keeping your QCD donation out of your adjusted gross income has other benefits (i.e., reducing Medicare Part B premiums). Q: S o how would others go about making a Qualified Charitable Distribution? A: Qualified Charitable Distributions are pretty easy to implement: 1. Contact your IRA custodian. 2. Request that you wish to make a charitable distribution to St. Vincent de Paul for a specified amount of your RMD. 3. Ask that the check be sent in care of you to your home address and then forward it--or better yet, deliver it to SVdP and take a tour! 4. And, your QCD gift of $1,000 or more automatically makes you a member of the Servant Leaders Society! Q: A ny other recommendations? A: Yes, speaking of retirement and IRA accounts, legacy gifts provide another way to support SVdP and can be implemented quickly with little hassle and paperwork through a beneficiary designation. A legacy gift to SVdP can ensure that the important work of the organization continues well into the future. To that end, we have included SVdP as a beneficiary for a share of an IRA account. The gift will flow tax-free to SVdP. Unlike a will, a beneficiary designation can be implemented in a matter of minutes and there is no need to use the services of an attorney or financial advisor to put your gift in place. Contact the administrator of your retirement plan and decide what percentage of the account you wish to give to SVdP. Often, you can make beneficiary designations directly on your retirement plan’s website. Regardless of the size, your gift makes a meaningful difference.

Q: T hank you Mike and Rita. Anything else you would like to share with our readers? A: W e

hope you’ll join us in taking advantage of the AZ Tax Credit and exploring other ways that we can lend support to an organization that stands at the front line in addressing the most pressing needs of the community.

Charitable Gift Annuity. It’s a No-Brainer!

Vincentian CONNECTION May 2018

Mick Stumpf and his wife, Joyce, were sitting at the kitchen table. Mick picked up the pen and was starting to sign the papers when he stopped, looked up, and said with a disbelieving look, “I don’t know why more people don’t do this. It’s a no-brainer!” Mick was talking about a Charitable Gift Annuity. Mick and Joyce had been involved with St. Vincent de Paul many years ago. Not only had they heard good things about the organization, they saw it firsthand. People who are struggling on a daily basis have a place to go to get back on their feet. If they are without a home, St. Vincent de Paul can provide basic needs and get them the help they need to find a place to live. If they are straining to make rent or utility payments, St. Vincent de Paul can help so they do not become homeless. Now that both Mick and Joyce are retired, they want to support an organization they believe in, and also want to have income for the rest of their lives. A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) fit their needs. Their CGA provided them with a tax deduction in the year in which they established it and provided a guaranteed annual income for the rest of their lives. It gave them a source of revenue and a chance to do something good. Looking back, it had been a couple of years since they signed the paperwork for their first CGA, and as Mick picked up the pen to sign their second CGA, he shook his head, smiled and said, “It really is a no-brainer.”

A gift through the Vincentian Annuity will give you the security of a fixed income over your lifetime and provide support for St. Vincent de Paul that will last forever. As an example, Helen, an 80-year-old widow and St. Vincent de Paul volunteer, recently established a $50,000 Vincentian gift annuity. For her age, the annuity rate is 6.8%, meaning she’ll receive $3,400 annually for the rest of her life. And, she may take an income tax deduction of about 50% of her gift this year. Best of all, her gift will support St. Vincent de Paul’s work for generations to come. Annuity gifts start at $10,000.

The Society of a Thousand Thanks

One of the greatest privileges of serving in Arizona is being able to work with a generous community of people who care about the well-being of our state. Our friends not only host food drives and send volunteers, they also donate generously to support our work.

A ‘Wild’ Good Time Buffalo Wild Wings provided another night of fun and delicious food for the Family Evening Meal! The guests are always so appreciative when Buffalo Wild Wings are in the house. The continued support from several of the Buffalo Wild Wings locations helps to offset the cost of the Dining Room each time they bring their products and smiles. Each contribution saves SVdP nearly $20,000 each year which in turn allows us to feed even more people in our community that are in need.

Pizza Night Made Possible by the Raskob Foundation "Go ahead and do things," said John J. Raskob, a Delawarean philanthropist who, with his wife Helena, founded the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities in 1945. Over 70 years later, the Raskob Foundation still honors this call to action. And on January 19, their staff took part in a volunteer experience for Friday Night Pizza in the Family Dining Room. Not only did 19 of them get up to their elbows in cheese and pepperoni, but the Foundation generously underwrote the cost for that night’s meal. Thank you, Raskob Foundation, for giving your time, talent, and treasure to help out at the Family Evening Meal!

BizIQ Inspires with a Generous Donation St. Vincent de Paul found a new corporate partner in BizIQ. The employees of BizIQ presented a check for $1,000 to start a new charitable partnership. The future holds additional opportunities for both BizIQ and SVdP. BizIQ is more than just a resource for making your small business shine; they’re a small business themselves with the same goals and aspirations as the clients they serve.

U-Haul Celebrates 50 Years and Keeps Giving Back U-Haul celebrated their 50th anniversary this year! The company participated in this year’s Palomino Christmas sale by providing volunteers and a significant monetary donation. Each year, the employees support at U-Haul help to spread the meaning of giving and the spirit of sharing at the amazing holiday event. Thank you, U-Haul, for all that you make possible for those we serve. The kids’ smiles are enough gratitude to last nearly the entire year.
