EDITORIAL

By Tom Hoyer, Editor The loss of trust in our elected representatives and institutions. Is it just them or us as well?

Our democracy is formed on the basis of a general inclusion in the processes and function of Government. This refers to all 3 tiers of government, from the Federal, to the State and to Local Government. However, too often the people are left behind.

Maybe its more basic still. Is it that they fear us, cannot deal with dissent or other people and groups intervening in the processes they have created. Processes that have not meaningfully included us?

It can be observed, that when services are delivered to the various parts of the Australian and other related communities, all of the people may not be entirely satisfied.

This dissatisfaction has given rise to the many and varied community groups, who would and could offer a general critique or a suggestion to make our experiences better ones and more reflective of the needs of the general community.

On reflection, our ratepayer, sporting and social groups exist to challenge bad decisions or to offer support where needed.

This is such a valuable resource to ignore.

A recent trip to Timor-Leste included discussions about the role of Government and Ministers and the decision-making efforts that go to making the lives of Timorese easier, healthier and more productive. The general consensus was that many

decisions are made by well meaning and intelligent leaders, but such decision are not always wise ones. By talking to the community and genuinely including them in the decisionmaking processes, wiser and better decisions can be made.

Their experiences are not dissimilar to our own. This exclusion, seemingly applied by all Governments and departments, seems to be more deliberate now than when it 1st emerged several decades ago. Has the nomination of our political representatives come from a narrowing of the pool of genuine and experienced persons, people that understand the what representation is all about? Are our bureaucracies populated by a particular class of persons who are driven by cost cutting and a profit motive, narrow performance expectations, sycophantic behaviour by subordinates and a lack of general experience?

Either way, it is time to “not stay silent�, to stand up and be counted, at the ballot box, or in conversation, or with our selves. If we are to be respected, if we are expected to trust again, maybe we have to demand proper and appropriate representation, not this current exclusion that we all seem to be experiencing.

SERPENTINE-JARRAHDALE KAYAKERS ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE PROSPECT OF THE OLYMPIC TRIALS BEING HELD IN THEIR “BACKYARD”.

By Greg Smith The Champion Lakes Boating Club will host next year’s national Olympic kayak trials.

a World Cup (Germany) and the world titles Hungary in August.

Champion Lakes is one of only three international rowing / canoeing courses in Australia.

With three children and life as a FIFO mine emergency response team leader, Mussell has his work cut out but is confident of competing in Tokyo in September 2020.

The Champion Lakes Boating Club’s kayaking coordinator, Robyn Brown, who lives in Serpentine, said the club only received the news.

“We were hosting the national titles but now it’s an even bigger deal,” said Robyn.

“With many of our members coming from the SerpentineJarrahdale area, it’s an ideal opportunity for them to see some of the world’s elite paddlers in action.”

One Champion Lakes member going for Olympic glory will be Leon Mussell. Unfortunately, it won’t be for Australia.

“It’s going to be extremely challenging but I am determined to do my best for the Cook Islands,” he says.

Robyn Brown, said the club was tremendously proud of Mussell’s achievements, considering he was the only person in WA who paddled the craft. “We have people who have represented Australia in dragon boating but no one in canoeing,” she said.

“To have Leon achieve Olympic selection would make us extremely proud.”

The 34-year-old Piara Waters resident is aiming to represent The Cook Islands, the land of his mother’s birth, at the 2020 Olympics.

His main hurdle is obtaining enough competition here in Western Australia – given he’s the only person who regularly compete in the extremely difficult Canadian canoe class.

Although he’s only been paddling since 2015, after a challenge from a mate, Mussell has come a long way, with the Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee, providing him with sponsorship.

That’s enabled him to attend training camps with the elite of the sport in Hungary, where he trained alongside world champions.

“To be honest, I was over-awed when I first went to Europe,” said Mussell. “These guys have been doing the sport since they were kids, and it take five years before you become competent. I’d only been doing it for a few months.”

His foray into Canadian-class came after a mate in Adelaide recognised that because Western Samoa had dropped out of the sport’s Oceania federation, there was a spot open for another nation. With only three weeks’ training, Mussell was set to go.

“I just happened to be on hand and ended up paddling the C1 (single craft) and C2 (doubles) with a Cook Islands kayak paddler, who I only met the day before,” Mussell said.

“He was just as surprised as me. We battled our way down the course and didn’t finish too far behind Australia and New Zealand and the Cook Islands suddenly had a team.”

Olympic selection is not assured, as Mussell has to perform to standard in several events leading to the Games, including two grand prix regattas in Sydney and Adelaide, the Australian titles (being held at Champion Lakes next March)

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ALTERNATIVES TO LITIGATING FAMILY LAW MATTERS. COLLABORATION ANYONE?

A conventional separation or divorce process is based on adversarial principles. Court is always in the background and children are often the ones who bear the brunt of these conflicts.

The threat of bringing the matter to court is removed in the collaborative process. Collaborative practice is, by definition, a non-adversarial approach to dispute resolution. Your lawyers negotiate in good faith with the focus of achieving a lasting settlement. More creativity is possible in this setting to achieve workable and lasting solutions.

Lawyers are present to give their clients legal advice, but their focus is on solutions, not on creating a greater divide between the separating spouses.

Collaborative family law is defined by three key principles: 1. The voluntary and complete exchange of financial information; 2. The pledge not to take the matter to court by way of a participation agreement signed by both the lawyers and the parties; 3. A commitment to mutual respect and cooperation to achieve a resolution by way of a separation agreement or other domestic contract.

Mediation or Collaboration?

During mediation, a neutral third party called the mediator assists you to negotiate and facilitate a settlement of the issues in dispute. The mediator cannot give you legal advice, nor can they advocate for either side. If an agreement is reached a draft agreement is completed.

Mediation is often the choice for separating couples with relatively low conflict who are able to negotiate, in the presence of a mediator, without their lawyers present. Collaborative practice may be appropriate for low, medium or even high conflict cases where there are significant trust issues. When an agreement is achieved a draft agreement is completed.

Both mediation and the collaborative family law process rely on voluntary and complete financial disclosure by the parties, and a commitment to resolution that will reflect the interests of both spouses. If mediation fails, you may choose to use your lawyer in litigation. The collaborative participation agreement focuses on resolution, and the collaborative lawyers, as well as any other collaborative professionals involved, are disqualified from participating in litigation should the process fail. This is a disincentive to litigate and a strong incentive to work through all the issues to achieve a settlement.

BYFORD VFB GOES FOR GOLD

On October 28, the 2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games kicked off with an opening ceremony in Mandurah.

Teams from around the country and overseas walked the foreshore in all their glory. The Byford Volunteer Fire Brigade participated looking smart and professional in their uniforms waving the brigades flag.

The team had high hopes of winning gold in games of bowls, hose drills, bucket relays, burn over drills and a fire truck pull. After many months of organisation and training the teams were excited to be off at their first game- lawn bowls.

Two teams were fighting for gold with one team making it into the finals! On the Saturday, the team (and supporters!) traveled down to Mandurah to compete in the Firefighter Games.

These consisted of a heavy hose drill, bucket throwing, burn over drill and a fire truck pull. The team was pumped and ready to go! First up, the heavy hose drill. Great teamwork and attention to detail was shown, then off to save a small cubby house from a fire by throwing buckets of water onto the roof. Byford VFB used effective and quick techniques to save this burning building.

Next, the weigh in for the fire truck pull. The most popular event of the day. Pulling a 15 tonne truck 20 meters. Could they do it? Yes they could! The team pulled the truck across the line in 19.6 seconds!

A burn over drill finished the games off. After a long day, the medal ceremony was a welcome relief with Byford VFB winning bronze in the bucket relay competition. The week of games concluded with a congratulatory dinner celebrating the team’s success!

NEW LOOK FOR YOUR LOCAL RSL

By Shana McKay Over the past three years, the Serpentine-Jarrahdale RSL (SJ RSL) has been fortunate to utilise the beautiful Anzac Memorial Park in The Glades, Byford, for the annual Dawn Service on Anzac Day and more recently the Remembrance Day service on November 11.

This November marked the Centenary of the Armistice; the end of World War One where approximately 62000 Australians died in service to our Country. The community of Serpentine-Jarrahdale continues to honour their spirit with an ever-growing attendance at these services.

The work of the SJ RSL sub branch goes well beyond hosting two services per year. It provides welfare services to veterans and their families – a function that is not widely known to the public.

It administers advocacy assistance through claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs along with welfare provision, including financial donations, crisis counseling and referrals to other services.

The Serpentine-Jarrahdale sub-branch is not your typical club and was formed in 2006 by Mr Ric Giblett OAM JP, Vietnam Veteran and President of the inaugural committee. Its home

is the Pre-loved Recycled Treasures store at 840 South West Hwy, Byford. Run purely by volunteers, the not-for-profit organisation’s motto is to “Help us to help others”. A very fitting mission for the small sub-branch who generously donates funds to schools, clubs and groups within SerpentineJarrahdale each year.

At the recent AGM in August, a new committee was elected with an aim to increase the profile of the RSL in Serpentine-Jarrahdale. A renewed logo and a re-branding of the store will hopefully catch people’s eye, encouraging more donations to the store leading to more recycled treasures available for customers. It is the revenue from the Op Shop which enables the sub-branch to continue its work in the community.

Any defence force member, past or present, can join as a service member and benefit from the welfare and comradeship. Family of service members and those who work within the emergency services such as Fire Brigade, Police, Nurses and Emergency Services are able to join as affiliate members.

CHRISTMAS ART BRINGS FESTIVE CHEER TO THE SHIRE

Christmas has come early to the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale courtesy of a unique artistic collaboration between DESIGNthe shire, local school children and the Serpentine Jarrahdale Men’s Shed.

Since August, SJ Men’s Shed members have been busily constructing a series of replica Christmas trees made from different recycled materials. The men have also built other pieces including stars, angels and rein-garoos - a cross between a reindeer and a kangaroo.

The pieces were last week sent to four local schools Jarrahdale Primary School, Marri Grove Primary School, Serpentine Primary School and Mundijong Primary School – where they will be adorned with decorations made by students.

The six trees and other pieces will take pride of place at a special community Christmas concert at Jarrahdale Oval on December 14.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the initiative was an opportunity to strengthen community connections in the lead up to Christmas.

“Christmas is a time when community spirit is probably at its strongest and these kind of collaborations are a small yet important way of helping build that sense of community,” Cr Rich said.

“The pieces are looking fantastic which is a credit to the SJ Men’s Shed and also to local school children who’ve been tasked with making some of the decorations.

“If anyone wishes to view the pieces, they’ll be on display next month at a free community Christmas concert in Jarrahdale.

Everyone is welcome to attend and we’d love to see as many people there as possible.”

Peter Cuttriss, president of the SJ Men’s Shed, said up to eight members had spent more than two months working on the pieces.

“It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable project and something our members have really embraced,” Mr Cuttriss said.

“We’ve worked on the pieces for roughly six hours a week at the shed and all the material has come from things like pallets and old packing boxes. It’s wonderful to see the hard work the students have put into the decorations and we’re really pleased to have been able to help bring some festive cheer to the shire.”

BUSY TIME FOR THE COMMUNITY BANK

The weekend of 3rd and 4th saw the Community Bank directors and staff attending the annual Serpentine Foothills Polocrosse tournament. As the major sponsor of this prestigious event the Community Bank marquee had a prime viewing position on the sidelines. It was an exciting event with all participants demonstrating great skills of horsemanship at all levels.

Monday 5th was time for the AGM and presentation evening.

Several recipients of funding shared their stories with the audience of how the Community Bank funding helped them achieve their Byford & Districts Community Bank® Branch

The Community Bank also sponsored a local student, Orleans Greatz, to attend Camp Hero which is run by youth organisation Zero to Hero to help educate attendees about mental health in teenagers. Orleans shared her experiences from the camp and hopes to be able to help any of her peers should the need arise.

Finally on Thursday 15th the Community Bank hosted a seniors week event at St Aidens church in Byford. Speakers from Dementia Australia, Memory Nurture and Advocare passed on vital information to local seniors about how to recognise Dementia and where to get assistance if needed as well as the value of music as a therapy for sufferers. Advocare advised everyone of their rights as seniors and assistance that is readily available. Temptations Café provided a light lunch and snacks for this event.

EXCESS BAGGAGE – PICKING UP THE PIECES Media Release - City of Armadale The City of Armadale’s History House Museum is displaying memorabilia commemorating the stories of the service men and women that returned from World War 1.

The latest exhibition, Excess Baggage, delves into the lives of men and women from the district who enlisted and survived the war and returned to settle back into the community and pick up the pieces of their previous lives.

“Claude joined the war efforts in France as part of the 16th Battalion in February 1917 and only two months later was captured by the Germans during the Battle for Bullecourt, and remained captured for the next 20 months,” he said.

The exhibition opens on November 15 and will run to early May 2019 at History House Museum, and can be viewed during normal business hours, 10am to 4pm.

Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said he was surprised to learn that almost 80% of the local men and women that came home did not stay.

“With the number of people returning from service there was great competition for jobs, and with physical or mental disabilities they could no longer do their previous line of work.

“Many took up the offer of the Soldier Settlement Scheme to purchase land and established wheat and sheep farms in the Wheatbelt district, or orchard and dairy farms to the south.

“There are some fascinating souvenirs and memorabilia on display during the exhibition, such as a diary kept by Claude Marsh during his time as a prisoner of war.

A SECOND LIFE FOR A RETIRED RACEHORSE Jessica King takes great pride in rescuing off the track thoroughbreds, ponies and re-training them. She then sells them on to children and young adults as competition horses and ponies to further their new careers in a new life.

Her latest thoroughbred, ‘My Boy Clive’ finished a hefty racing career in late 2016 as an 8 year old. His races are absolutely astonishing to watch.

Clive was retired sound from racing and was placed into a new home as a show horse, but he wasn’t ready to quit his love for galloping so Jessica reunited hime with what he loves to do, racing.

2 years later, Clive still hasn’t given up his love for galloping and quite often forgets this during cross country. Their training grounds are in Mundijong where Jessica is grateful of the beautiful trails where she is able to work on stamina.

“We have come along way and are successfully working up the grades in eventing. Our latest success was A show hosted

by Riding For The Disabled Australia at Murray Equestrian Centre and organised by Bronwyn Weir. We came home titled as the over all show jumping champion for our classes.

We had great results the whole day including our first 105cm showjumping round.” Jessica said.

REVAMPED POLOCROSSE CARNIVAL BETTER THAN EVER The Serpentine Foothills Polocrosse Club held their annual carnival over the first weekend in November. Four years ago the club recognised that by having their carnival as one of the last on the calendar every year, team nomination numbers were down and decided a re-vamp of the carnival was a way to solve this; this was the beginning of the Barbara Lyster Cup and Lang Family Cup. The Lyster and Lang Families were both instrumental in the early days (and still are) of the Serpentine Foothills Polocrosse Club so naming these two additional grades in honor of them was the natural fit.

2018 marked the fourth year of competition with the continued support from Byford & Districts Bendigo bank sponsoring the prize money for both of the grades. This year saw over 5 interstate players make the trip to WA to participate in the Barbara Lyster Cup, including recently

named Australian World Cup player Jim Grills from NSW. The intensity of the games leading into the final was electric with more than just prize money on the line, everyone wanted their name on that cup!

Serpentine Foothills Polocrosse Club president Salli Galvin said this year’s carnival was better than ever with a great turnout and some very high level Polocrosse played, ‘This year was great, I was so impressed with the quality of players we had attend and the hard work from our club members to ensure our carnival ran smoothly was second to non - our carnival is now becoming one no one wants to miss!’

Team ‘TROGIC’ took out this years Lang Family Cup, which was a mixed competition with capped points at 28 and the ‘Souths Plus One’ team took home the highly contested 45 point Barbara Lyster Cup; two of Barbara’s daughters Suzette and Salli played in the winning team who defeated their other two sisters Elizabeth and Tracey in the final.

It wasn’t only the two cup grades which turned up the intensity for the crowd on finals day with fierce competition from the Junior E grade to A grade in the club competition. Serpentine Foothills Polocrosse Club, once again, held a themed Saturday Night Party with Pirates and Wenches dancing the night away the perfect end to a wonderful 2018 Polocrosse season.

ENCOURAGING SIGNS FOR NEW TIMBER PROCESSING PROJECT AT NANNUP MEDIA RELEASE - Forest Industries Federation (WA) Inc The WA timber industry welcomes news that Nannup Timber Processing (NTP) has been invited to lodge a full business case for Australian Government funding towards a new Plywood Veneer Peeling Facility.

The proposed project would open an exciting new chapter of adding value to our sustainably managed timber resources, according to the Acting CEO of the Forest Industries Federation of WA, Matt Granger.

“The proposed Nannup Plywood Veneer Peeling Facility would create more than 30 jobs in construction, and around 80 permanent positions when fully commissioned,” Mr Granger said.

“NTP has overcome a massive field of competitors seeking this funding, to be eligible to submit a full business case,” he said.

“So while it’s not a done-deal, it’s very welcome news. We are talking about a funding program (Regional Growth Fund) where each grant is over $10 million,” Mr Granger explained.

“The proposed Plywood Veneer Peeling Facility would be transformational for Nannup, and the broader South West community. It would take a current sustainable timber resource and use new technology to extract a higher value product, especially from logs that are too small for sawmilling,’ Mr Granger said.

Time to put up the tree and break out the box of decorations you SWORE had been, “In the SHED RIGHT NEXT TO THE CHRISTMAS TREE I TOLD YOU – oh, never mind.”

Christmas is a special time for a lot of people. A time when mixed feelings are put aside to merrily celebrate the time of Jesus’ birth.

Through the years, the way we celebrate Christmas has changed. While Christmas in the early days used to be solely about Jesus’ birth, it has now become an adapted tradition reaching to cultures other than Christianity.

Through the years, my idea of Christmas has changed tremendously.

Like any kid, it used to be about the presents for me. I just couldn’t wait to get under the tree (which will probably never change), but I have grown to value the togetherness… the love and joy, and the magic that brings us all together. The smiles you get from strangers, your two worlds meeting for a split second, then going back to your own business and forgetting all but one detail about them. The detail that stays with you, so that whenever you see a

red beanie, or yellow Doc Martins - you think of that person. The one that showed you joy and love, and restored the faith in you, that the human race can be kind and loving to strangers, and that maybe the world isn’t such a bad place after all.

Christmas has had an interesting past.

The Puritans banned Christmas in the 17th century, associating it with drunkenness and other misbehaviour. It was restored as a legal holiday in 1660, but remained disreputable.

In the early 19th century, Christmas was revived, during a reform in the Anglican Church.

Charles Dickens and other writers reinvented the holiday by emphasizing Christmas as a time for family, religion, gift-giving, and social reconciliation.

There are so many things that people may not know about Christmas! Here’s some interesting facts: All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts.

Most of Santa’s Reindeer have malesounding names, such as Blitzen, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but shock horror – female!

Each year there are approximately 20,000 ‘Rent-a-Santas’, across the United States. “Rent-a-Santas” usually

undergo seasonal training, on how to maintain a jolly attitude under pressure from the public. They also receive practical advice, such as not accepting money from parents - while children are looking, and avoiding garlic, onions, or beans for lunch.

Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra (also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker - Bishop Saint Nicholas of Smyrna - and Nikolaos of Bari), who lived during the fourth century. Born in Patara, in modern-day Turkey, he is the world’s most popular non-Biblical Saint, and artists have portrayed him more often than any other saint, except Mary. He is the Patron Saint of banking, pawn broking, pirating, butchery, sailing, thievery, orphans, royalty, and New York City.

The Viking God Odin, is one precursor to the modern Santa Claus. According to myth, Odin rode his flying horse, Sleipnir, who had eight legs. In the winter, Odin gave out both gifts and punishments, and children would fill their boots or stockings with treats for Sleipnir.

It is estimated that the song “White Christmas”, by Irving Berlin, is the best-selling single of all time, with over 100 million sales worldwide.

Christmas is a time for joy and merriment. A time for family, love and togetherness. So whether you are with family, friends or on your own for Christmas, find a way to share that magic with someone else. A gift, a card or just a smile…

WARM WEATHER AND YOUR PET - PART II

As promised in the last edition we’re following up with some information on the warm weather and your pet; how to keep them safe & how you can make summer more enjoyable for all!

Let’s start with some hints and tips for the hot weather some obvious, and some less so!

• Walk your dog early in the morning or in the cool of the evening- (it really is nice early morning once you are in the habit; it’s a great way to start the day!

• Avoid walking them on hot surfaces; remember you are wearing shoes! Use the back of your hand to test surfaces before walking your dog across them.

• Invest in a cooling mat or cooling neck band; I’m not a fan of the cooling jacket unless you are with your dog at all times. The cooling mats made for dogs are very safe. I have used cooling neckbands for myself and use one on my dog for walks and training.

• Invest in a wading pool such as a clam shell or dog pool.

For puppies use under supervision and only partially fill the clam shell for puppies and dogs so it is safe. Beware if you have young children.

• Dogs will often cool off by dipping their feet in water; think about ways your dog may be able to cool off that way.

• Invest in a spray bottle to cool your dog off in the summer. Don’t use a spray bottle for punishment; this is not a good way to correct your dog’s behaviour.

The spray bottle should be a pleasant experience.

• An Australian bush flower essence call Solaris (ausflowers.com.au) is very good for the effects of heat. Suitable to add to the water of humans and animals.

• Make up some iceblocks for your dogs wading pool, or water bowl.

• You may also make up a big iceblock in an ice-cream container; use some low salt broth or soak some bikkies in water then add a few soft treats and freeze.

You can leave in the container or place outside on the grass for a treat.

• If you travel a lot with your dog invest in a cooling mat and also a portable fan cooler. You can get rechargeable fan at hardware stores (such as a ryobi fan that is chargeable with a drill battery). The fans have a safety cover on them to cover the blades.

• Bring your dog indoors as much as possible when it is hot. Give them a cool place to lay, some toys and something to chew on. Don’t leave them locked out in the heat unless they have adequate facilities to keep cool.

• Allow your dog extra water during summer and have a few water stations around; make sure they stay shaded so the water doesn’t get hot during the day.

With the warmer weather well and truly here hyperthermia (heat stroke) is a danger to your pet. Please ensure your dog or cat is not accidently locked inside a shed or hot car. Hot temperatures can kill or cause permanent damage very quickly.

Also be aware that exercising when it’s hot can lead to heatstroke especially if you have a dog which is running around or chasing a ball. The early signs of heatstroke are excessive panting and mild stress. This can then lead to difficulty breathing and collapse. You may also see excessive salivation & fits (however this can also be a sign of other things such as poisoning). If your pet has been exposed to hot temperatures and is showing signs of distress you must remove them from the source of the heat immediately. You may then start to cool them by hosing them with running water or place wet towels on their body. Phone your vet for immediate advice. If you suspect hyperthermia do not try to cool them down too quickly or drastically without discussing with your vet first.

If you ever have an emergency with your pet make sure you phone the vet first; if they are not at the clinic you may waste valuable time if you just jump in the car & drive down. Also if the vet knows you are coming in with an urgent case they can prepare for your arrival.

WE NEED TO STEP UP TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN MEDIA RELEASE - Alyssa Hayden Shadow Minister for Community Services Alyssa Hayden has stated that the powers of the Department of Communities should be strengthened to deal with childcare providers who continually breach the terms of their licence.

This comes after provider Camp Australia was fined $210,000 for keeping two sets of books to cover up the fact it was caring for more children than its licence allowed.

The fine comes after seven earlier safety breaches by Camp Australia.

Mrs Hayden said while she welcomed the latest action it was unacceptable for any child care operator to continue to flout its responsibilities.

“We have strict regulations in place for the protection of our children for good reason; children are vulnerable and require the strictest support and supervision,” Mrs Hayden said.

Mrs Hayden said the continued breaches were appalling and indicated that Camp Australia could continually get away with ignoring the terms of its licence.

NOVEMBER A BUSY MONTH FOR THE SJ MENS SHED The members at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Mens Shed have had a very busy month this November, finishing up several projects (including the fold up picnic tables for MZI) and starting a ‘just a few’ more!

Building a horse float, picnic bench and timber deck chairs, Horse Club trophy stands, experimenting with resin coatings and the Shire Centenary seat will no doubt keep the guys occupied for a while.

The students at Jarrahdale Primary School decorated the Christmas Tress that were completed last month. The Mens Shed team were very pleased with the final results when they went to the school to see the students hard work.

SENIORS IN WA RECOGNISED FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS MEDIA RELEASE - Alyssa Hayden MLA

In the lead up to Seniors Week, Shadow Minister for Seniors and Ageing Alyssa Hayden is delighted to see six metropolitan and regional seniors be nominated for Juniper WA Lifetime Achievement Awards.

One nominees is Lifeline WA ambassador and Perth butcher Mr Vince Garreffa, who dedicates much of his time to improve the lives of those with dementia.

Every year, Mr Garreffa holds brunch fundraiser in his backyard and has raised a total of more than $3 million for charity, with over $400,000 raised this year.

“I’ve known Vince for a very long time; in fact his advice and guidance helped me start my first business,” Mrs Hayden said.

“Seeing Vince still giving and donating his time and efforts to others at 67 years young is inspirational. Vince is without a doubt one of WA’s great success stories. He is an amazing individual touching the hearts and minds of everyone in his path and I thank him for being such an inspiring man.”

Other nominees include: • Graeme Bland who has provided a lifetime of service having joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1957 and served in Malaysia, Thailand and Australia • Nilda Eisen who works extensively with culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities and has initiated programs, including raising awareness of elder abuse and encouraging breast screening services for CaLD communities • Faye Dean who has worked with the Dementia Partnership Project for the Bidyadanga community in conjunction with Alzheimer’s WA since 2014 • Grant Westthorp who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Men’s Resource Centre in Albany and has contributed significantly to the health and wellbeing of men in the Great Southern region • Mary Elizabeth Williams who lobbied Federal, State and local governments and raised more than $25,000 to establish a radiation facility in Albany to provide cancer treatment to people in regional areas. Ms Williams also started the Stepping Out 2 Program in Denmark to help connect the isolated and lonely.

“I congratulate all nominees for all they do for our communities across the State and I look forward to seeing them receive their awards at the end of Seniors Week on 17 November.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE SERPENTINE JARRAHDALE COMMUNITY RESOURCE TEAM! It’s been another busy year at the SJ CRC, with many successful events and workshops being enjoyed by our community members.

2018 has unfortunately seen some of our team members leave us, but our new, friendly and knowledgeable team are here to provide professional and community-focused services to the residents of the Serpentine Jarrahdale area.
