1 Conservative Party Manifesto 2015 Analysed using www.textisbeautiful.net
What do the visualisations mean? Text is Beautiful uses algorithms to analyse the frequency of words in a text, their relationship to other words, and a number of other factors. For each section of the Conservative manifesto, there are three visual representations of the text (explanations below taken from Text Is Beautiful website):
Topic Cloud: This visualisation is inspired by Wordle but it has a little text analytics magic sprinkled on top. In this visualisation, the topics are positioned randomly to keep the visualisations nice and compact. The size of a topic denotes how frequent it is within the text. Unlike Wordle, the Concept Cloud groups topics into themes. Themes are denoted by colour. Concepts that have the same colour belong to the same theme and are closely related.
Topic Web: In this visualisation, the position of topics matter. Topics that are more related will appear near each other. Topics that aren't closely related will appear further apart. As with the Topic Cloud, related topics are grouped into themes. Themes are denoted by colour.
Correlation Wheel: You can use the correlation wheel to visualise which topics are highly correlated with each other. Two topics are highly correlated if they appear together in the text often and appear apart rarely. The correlation is symmetric. This means that topics which appear large in the Topic Web will most likely not be highly correlated with any other topics. Consider the topic ‘Alice’ in the story Alice In Wonderland. ‘Alice’ appears with a wide range of topics throughout the story. ‘Alice’ isn't highly correlated with any one topic - it appears frequently with a wide range of topics. You can use this visualisation to identify underlying themes in your text. In a text corpus about Economics, supply and demand are highly correlated. Similarly for Winston Churchill, the topics ‘election’ and ‘campaign’ along with ‘election’ and ‘won’ are highly correlated. These relationships can help you better understand your text.
