• What is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading?

• Undergraduate students may opt to have a course graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) in lieu of traditional letter grades, where “S” indicates credit earned and “U” indicates no credit earned.

• For further policy and procedure information on S/U grading, consult the Undergraduate Catalog’s Explanation of Grades and‘- scroll down to the pertinent section called Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading.

You are strongly encouraged to meet the Academic Advisors for this request.

You are required to submit the request by the first Thursday of the semester.

• S/U Grading Eligibility • Students cannot select S/U grading for any course that is required for their majors, or is a prerequisite for their major(s) or general education requirements.

• When repeating a course, S/U grading is not an option.

‘• No more than 25 percent of a student’s UB credit can be graded S/U. • Students who plan to apply for graduate schools should NOT request for S/U grade for any major-related courses.

•

For example, if you are a Psychology student taking PSY 342 as a free elective and you have a plan to pursue a Master’s degree in Psychology, it is not advisable for you to request S/U grading for that course.

• S/U Grading Policy •

The letter grades equivalent to “U” (unsatisfactory) are “C-,” “D+,” “D,” and “F”.

S/U request will not be approved retroactively. Form must be received and processed before the deadline stated above. No exception is allowed for late submission.

‘S/U grading is an option of the student, not the instructor. Instructors are not aware and will not be informed that students have selected the S/U option when they submit the earned letter grade.

The Office of the Registrar will convert the letter grade to S/U for those students who have opted for S/U grading at the end of the semester. Courses requested S/U will temporarily appear as the letter grade assigned by the instructor. Letter grades will be changed to S/U as soon as possible after grades are posted.

• Recovering the Letter Grade • Students may recover the letter grade earned in a course graded S/U if: a) that course is required for their major(s), or is a prerequisite for their major(s) to which they have changed; or b) they can document that a graduate or professional school to which they have applied demands the letter grade earned. (Once recovered, the grade cannot be reverted back to S/U grading)

‘• Students who have opted for S/U grading and earn a “C-,” “D+” or “D” may petition their Academic Advisor to recover the letter grade if they wish to use the course toward degree requirements. Note that by recovering letter grades with grade point below 2.0 you may fall under academic probation status, lose your major acceptance and/or graduation eligibility because your CGPA falls below the departmental requirement.

• Student wishing to recover letter grades will have to submit a Request to Recover Letter Grade Form to their Academic Advisor for review and approval.
