ICFF 9 EDITION TH

ICFF is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation

Following the incredible success of the Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival that brought more than 15,000 people to Toronto, Vaughan and Markham, we are excited to present the ninth edition, ICFF at Home, a new online program that will play a role in homes of film lovers across Canada.

Cristiano de Florentiis ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

ICFF, presented by IC Savings and supported by the Italian Embassy, Consulates and the Italian Cultural Institutes, this year, brings 50 thoughtfully curated films and shorts to the ICFF Platform, together with 13 exclusive titles that will be featured on Rogers TV, for all Rogers customers. This incredible program is thanks to the support of our sponsors, partners and institutions. In celebration of the centenary of Federico Fellini, the festival dedicates this edition to the great Maestro of Italian cinema with two incredible documentaries: Fellinopolis by Silvia Giulietti and Fellini, Première Fois by Paul Tana, as well as the physical screenings at the Vancouver Rio Theatre of 8 ½ and La Dolce Vita. ICFF at Home will present a variety of Special Events that celebrate and highlight Italian culture. This year’s Industry Day will take place in Toronto at Pinewood Studios and will explore the topics of Italian-Canadian Co-Productions and Virtual Productions, organized with our proud partners: ANICA, ITA Italian Trade Agency and SIRT.

Maurizio Magnifico MANAGING DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

ICFF Cucina returns this year celebrating the week of Italian cuisine in the world with two films: A Fish Out of Water and The True story of Tiramisù. Eataly Toronto has curated a menu inspired by the features, bringing these exquisite dishes directly to the homes of our audience. ICFF Architettura & Design, presented by Great Gulf, will introduce two documentaries showcasing Italy’s most appreciated architects: Renzo Piano: The Architect of Light by award-winner Carlos Saura, and Palladio by Giacomo Gatti. In the past months, we have constantly monitored the evolving situation and have adapted each time: reconnecting physically thanks to the Lavazza Drive-In this past summer, and now with the new online platform, bringing the festival directly to our audience. We are very thankful for these opportunities to explore new formats, and for the first time in ICFF history, reaching audiences across the nation. However, when asked if physical events will be replaced by virtual initiatives, we must say no. Although watching movies from the comfort of your home is a great experience, in our opinion, nothing can compare to the feeling of community at a physical film festival. For this reason, we hope to soon bring ICFF back to the cinemas, keeping an additional online component connecting our fans all across Canada.

GET TO KNOW THE ARTIST BEHIND THE COVER

SIMONE MASSONI Interview by Anne-Elise Allegritti Q. Simone, what inspired the poster for ICFF 2020? A. Federico Fellini was certainly one of the greatest sources of inspiration for this poster, and it was wonderful to be able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth with a personal touch… not only visually, but also conceptually. All of the great Maestro’s works were born of a dreamlike sense, almost surreal, which is what I tried to recapture with the inter-mingling of characters and elements from some of his most iconic films. At the same time, I tried to always maintain the connection between Italy and Canada.

Q.Your poster exudes cinema from every angle. What is your relationship with cinema and particularly with Fellini’s films? A. I cannot say that I am an expert on cinema, but I never miss an opportunity to go the theatre. I like all those movies that tell of real events and situations, even contemporary topics, happening in that moment, but sprinkled with a bit of madness and surrealism. Needless to say, Federico Fellini is one of those directors who really succeeds in this realm. Unfortunately, I only discovered and came to appreciate his style and his films as an adult, partly for age reasons and partly because my tastes have changed over time.

Q.On the topic of cinema, you are an artist and an illustrator… Have you ever thought about working in animation? A. Animation is certainly a fascinating field whose borders with drawing/static art are becoming increasingly blurred with time, as technologies – both hardware and software – evolve. It is a field that interests me a lot but I’ve preferred to create connections over the years with animators and artists in the sector, rather than inserting myself. Actually, I have tried it, but it garnered disappointing results compared to the efforts and energy I put forth. I believe animation is in my future, but I can’t yet predict how or in which form.

SIMONE MASSONI Simone Massoni is an artist who is currently based in Florence. He loves to experiment with everything he finds visually stimulating. After starting his career as a children’s book illustrator, he moved his interests to be aligned more with visual design and arts. You can find his latest explorations in books, magazines, advertising commercials and shows around the globe. He works, and has worked for clients Kiehl’s, Ferragamo, Facebook, Vogue, The New Yorker, The New York Times, GQ, The Times, Random House, amongst others. In this interview, we look at Simone as an artist and discover the passion behind his work.

INTRODUCTIONS | 9

The interest for Italy is on the rise in Canada: every year, thousands of students study Italian, that is one of the most widely spoken of the "heritage languages”. "Made in Italy” is highly appreciated in all its expressions: from fashion to agri-food to technology and culture. In this context, the visual arts, and cinema in particular, play a leading role, through their ability to convey a dynamic and contemporary image of our country - an image that we must nurture and support.

Claudio Taffuri AMBASSADOR OF ITALY IN CANADA

At this very challenging time, when our mobility is severely restricted, we are more determined than ever to make a contribution. And thanks to the dedication and commitment of the ICFF, we will be able to bring Italy into the homes of our Canadian friends. It will be a different Italian Contemporary Film Festival this year, for sure, but I am certain that its curious and attentive audience will be no less enthusiastic. And the more so as this is a very exciting time for Italian cinema, going through a deep, vibrant, long-awaited renewal, as one generation passes the torch to the next. Initiatives such as this one, as well as the ICFF Drive-in Film Festival which we organized this past summer 2020, are what we really need. Even at a time when we are required to remain distanced, we did not want to give up, we did not want to lose touch with each other, and we explored new solutions and new ways to share our cinema and culture with our Canadian friends.

Every year, thanks to the efforts and vision of a committed Board of Directors and Staff in addition to a great team of volunteers, the ICFF continues to provide the Italian - Canadian community and all patrons of the Italian culture alike a unique opportunity to appreciate the Italian contemporary cinema production in Canada. This year, in spite of the unexpected disruption caused by the global pandemic, the ICFF was able to overcome all challenges in a commendable, creative, brilliant way, which reflects the Italian nature and true spirit through a different yet successful type of stage, the drive-in setting.

Eugenio Sgrò CONSUL GENERAL, CONSULATE GENERAL OF ITALY IN TORONTO

The art of cinema carries the magic of conveying the depth and richness of our culture, art and values through contemporary stories and images of our evolving country and we are grateful to have been able to enjoy it thanks to the drive-in movie setting. My sincere congratulations and best wishes to the ICFF and every one involved in the organization of its events for another vibrant, intense and successful season.

INTRODUCTIONS | 11

A warm welcome to the audience of the ninth edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF). This event, bringing together thousands of fans of Italian cinema in Canada every year, today welcomes us in an unprecedented form that responds - due to the pandemic we find ourselves fighting - to the duty of guaranteeing everyone's health. By restructuring itself in order not to miss its annual appointment, the ICFF sends us an important message: Italian cinema, and our cultural industry in general, do not come to a halt. I am sure that this edition will also be a great celebration that will honour our beloved Italy, its talents and beauties, and will make us feel even closer to it.

Silvia Costantini CONSUL GENERAL OF ITALY IN MONTREAL

Our cinema boasts an unmatched wealth of skills and professionalism: actors, directors, screenwriters, editors, cinematographers, composers, costume and set designers who have made Italian cinema unforgettable in the world. And speaking of giants, let’s not forget that this year marks the centenary of the birth of Federico Fellini, the most celebrated Italian director of all time. I therefore wish great success to this initiative which enhances - through the films in the programme - Italian excellence, so cherished in Canada as well as elsewhere: our enormous artistic and cultural wealth, creativity, innovation, good food, design, lifestyle, that "Vivere all’italiana" (Living the Italian way) for which our Country is admired in the world. It is precisely with this spirit that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs places the “Fare Cinema” project at the centre of its cultural diplomacy for the promotion of quality Italian cinema and the film industry of our country. Let's enjoy the show and allow ourselves to be taken on this trip to Italy, in complete safety. Happy viewing everyone!

It is a real pleasure to extend my heartfelt benvenuto! to Western Canada to the first online edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival. This year has marked an unprecedented period in our history, in which we have witnessed countries, organizations and people suffer from continued physical and social distancing. At a time when movie theatres are empty, initiatives such as the ICFF constitute the silver lining of the pandemic cloud and offer all lovers of Italian cinema in our vast jurisdiction a much-needed opportunity to enjoy the latest films of Italian production.

Fabio Messineo CONSUL GENERAL, CONSULATE GENERAL OF ITALY IN VANCOUVER

I look forward to the Festival program as well as to the additional screenings that will be held at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver honouring Italy’s most celebrated Maestro Federico Fellini, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Our Consulate General is proud to keep supporting initiatives to promote Italian cinema, showcase our culture and bring Western Canadian audiences closer to the Italian lifestyle. Buona visione a tutti!

INTRODUCTIONS | 13

In this time of uncertainty one thing is certain: cinema continues its path of creativity and entertainment, making this pandemic a little more tolerable. Things have obviously changed drastically, our plans and projects required adjustments, cinemas look a lot different than they did less than a year ago and nobody could have predicted the return of drive-ins. The year 2020 will without a doubt remain in the history books; last year we thought it was going to simply mark the 100th anniversary of Federico Fellini's birth and had planned an impressive exhibition in collaboration with ICFF and Bell Lightbox, which has been postponed to better times.

Alessandro Ruggera DIRECTOR, ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI CULTURA DI TORONTO

The Istituto has learned to adapt to the new normal, our language courses are now online, as is most of our cultural programme, however we continue to offer exhibitions in our gallery, following provincial health guidelines to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors. The year 2020 also marks an important date for me, since my mandate as Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura has come to an end. Thank you to the staff at ICFF for the unforgettable experience, I leave my successor in good hands.

Francesco D’Arelli DIRECTOR, ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI CULTURA DI MONTREAL

As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Vaughan-Woodbridge it gives me great pleasure to congratulate you on this venture as ICFF enjoyed incredible success with sold-out screenings every night. Your creativity knows no bounds. 2020 has witnessed extraordinary and unprecedented times. We have been forced to isolate and stay away from friends and families. Isolation has affected our mental health.

Hon. Michael Tibollo ASSOCIATE MINISTER OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS

I would like to applaud the Italian Contemporary Film Festival for organizing the LAVAZZA DRIVE-IN NIGHTS which allowed the residents of Vaughan-Woodbridge to enjoy a night out while maintaining social distancing. I was impressed to see that although the world forced us to stay in our homes, the team at ICFF did not give up. They re-invented the traditional red carpet and created a Drive-Thru instead. Your efforts created an opportunity for people to enjoy a night which was fun, entertaining and most importantly, safe. Well done!

22 | FELLINI 100 ANNIVERSARY

ICFF 2020

FEDERICO FELLINI 100th ANNIVERSARY by Carlo Coen When Federico Fellini was laid to rest in Cinecittà’s Studio 5 after his death on October 31st 1993, the crowds that paid their last homage to the beloved Maestro were feeling, as remarked by Daniel Singer, that they were witnessing the end of an era, an era when cinema as a medium was holding a cultural primacy. Federico Fellini as a symbol represents cinema at its peak, in all its importance and completeness, the expression of a time when filmmaking mattered. However, Fellini’s legacy has withstood the challenge of time: cineastes both from Italy and other countries never made a secret of their debt to the Maestro. We can certainly mention the numerous connections with Fellini’s work in Woody Allen’s filmography, starting from his, To Rome With Love, a film where a full episode is a remake of The White Sheik. Stardust Memories is clearly inspired by 8 1/2, a masterpiece behind Eight and a Half Women by Peter Greenaway, Alex in Wonderland by Paul Mazursky, and behind the musical, Nine, and its cinematic version. Also, Nights of Cabiria was adapted for the musical, Sweet Charity, and Bob Fosse’s cinematic version. In Canada, the legacy of Fellini has inspired filmmakers like Atom Egoyan and Guy Maddin. I Vitelloni is a film that was an undeniable reference for Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, as well as for George Lucas’s, American Graffiti. Fellini has crossed the entire history of World Cinema with his vision and his masterly use of the medium. His first contact with the universe of film started during the war and its immediate aftermath, through his collaboration to the scripts of Rossellini’s Open City and Paisan. Even though the two directors took very different directions later, the admiration of Fellini for his mentor has always been openly recognized by him. He made his debut with Variety Lights, Lights, co-directed and co-produced with Alberto Lattuada in

1950. The mesmerizing dream of success and the shattering of all hopes is at the centre of the film, which anticipates many motifs that would appear later in all his films. Fellini was immediately aware of the importance of being associated with other famous and experienced colleagues, and he wrote the script of his second film, The White Sheik (1951), in collaboration with Michelangelo Antonioni. The White Sheik marked once more Fellini’s treatment of ordinary people’s dreams and their sad disappointments. With I vitelloni (1953) Fellini conquered the attention of the mainstream, but it is with La strada (1954) that he achieved international fame, as the film obtained an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1957. La strada marks a watershed in the history of Italian cinema, with its focus on marginalized characters and their mutual relationships, breaking with the narrowest views of neorealism and opening the way to a new, much broader horizon in storytelling. With Il bidone (1957) and Nights of Cabiria (1958) Fellini continued to walk on this new path, bagging another Oscar with the latter film. Nights of Cabiria precedes immediately Fellini’s most famous film, deemed by many as his masterpiece, La dolce vita (1959). La dolce

ICFF 2020 vita, besides being the biggest box office success of all times in Italy, is a trend setting work, the film that founds new ethics and anticipates the radical and irreversible changes occurring in Italy following the economic boom, one of those insights capable to interpret and anticipate the spirit of the times. Needless to say, La dolce vita has become a universally loved and admired film, even though it is haunted by a pessimism that emphasizes Fellini’s worldview which he could never hide, notwithstanding the love for life and for cinema he always felt. Such a contrast is probably the secret behind his profound humanism and the universality of his work. After a brief intermission with the short, The Temptations of Dr. Antonio, a witty response to the criticism he had to face after La dolce vita, Fellini made another masterpiece, 8 1/2 (1963), taking the word by surprise. Making reference to the psychoanalytical writings of Carl Jung and his most personal experience, Fellini tells us about his life, his dreams, his most profound desires and contradictions. 8 1/2 is the most autobiographical and, at the same time, the most universal film made by Fellini, a true revolution in filmmaking and storytelling. It is not by coincidence that it inspired so many other directors all over the world. Fellini’s career, even after these two milestone films, continued to stun the world. One could wonder what kind of evolution he could have pursued, in the aftermath of such peaks reached by his creativity. Yet, he continued to direct ground-breaking works, and to obtain recognition and awards both in Italy and abroad. After Juliet of the Spirits (1965), a sort of female version of 8 1/2, the segment Toby Dammit (1968), adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s story, Fellini Satyricon (1969) and Roma (1972), with Amarcord (1973) Fellini was awarded another Oscar.

FELLINI 100 ANNIVERSARY | 23 Amarcord is probably the ultimate autobiographical work of the Maestro, once again harmonizing personal memories with a tale that can be shared by all. The last period of his activity includes films that continued to confirm the appreciation of the entire world, such as Fellini’s Casanova (1976), starring the Canadian Donald Sutherland; the highly controversial Orchestra Rehearsal (1978) and The City of Women (1980), another film with his alter-ego Marcello Mastroianni, protagonist of La dolce vita and 8 1/2; And the Ship Sails On (1983); Ginger & Fred (1986), featuring again his wife Giulietta Masina and Mastroianni; Interview (1987), which returns to autobiography and contains, like Ginger & Fred, a stern and cruel criticism of the latest tendencies in television programs; and finally The Voice of the Moon (1990), a dreamlike story based on a novel (something unusual in his filmography), starring Roberto Benigni and Paolo Villaggio. In 1993, just a few months before his death, the Academy bestowed Fellini with an Honorary Award in recognition of his achievements and his career. ICFF is proud to pay its homage to one of the greatest film directors of Italian cinema on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. We are sure that all audiences will enjoy the revisitation of his extraordinary career.

NEED THAT PICTURE OF YOU THE PAPARAZZO FROM THE GOLDEN YEARS TO TODAY by Tonia Serrao Soppelsa There is something decidedly exhilarating in the illicit. In the self-gratifying, pleasure-seeking days of the 60s in Rome, during the heyday of Cinecittà, photographs snapped furtively and illegally made news and sold papers. The covert images satisfied the voyeurist obsession of gazing on stars’ lives. The men that snapped these pictures hid in bushes, hung from helicopters, and rode motorbikes in hot pursuit of their prey. Fellini loved them and encouraged them. In fact, in his iconic film La Dolce Vita, along with the disenchanted tabloid reporter (Marcello Mastroianni), who skulks around Roman nightlife on the prowl for his next story, Fellini brought international fame also to his sidekick, a photographer he named ‘Paparazzo’. Hence, the term was born, used for the determinedly resourceful free-lance photographers who provided the world's print with photos of celebrities in both their public and private lives. In celebrating Federico Fellini’s centenary of his birth, ICFF brings Toronto audiences the unique opportunity to have a close look at the outlier of the lens who rewrote the language of photography, the all Italian ‘Paparazzo”, then and now.

We can hear the roar of “vespe” from the 1950s and 1960s, on which the paparazzi competed to chase down the stars . This mix of voyeurism and the desire to challenge time, used the camera to freeze images, --the black and white images-- that arrested a whole slice of ‘la dolce vita’ society from improvised stripping to the stolen kisses of married directors and their starlets; photographs which seized the amazed and surprised looks of the intended. Among the greatest is Rino Barillari, the undisputed King of the Paparazzi, who has sensationalized and infuriated the stars, recording their rise and falls, their triumphs and tragedies, outwitting and outlasting them all, and stealing pieces of their life, that rich and inaccessible life. Those times were a counterpoint to today's culture of the selfie pose. We now live in a society where everything has already been seen, and celebrities go out of their way to be seen.

THE "KING" OF PAPARAZZI

RINO BARILLARI

Lady Gaga At present we are seeing VIPs and notable personalities that simultaneously despise and love paparazzi, even posing for them. Faux-paparazzi shots feature the stars as the protagonists, rather than the victims. Photographers explore the cult of celebrity culture by reconstructing apparently stolen shots with lookalikes with the now-clichéd hand-in-front-of-the-face pose that they once used to shield themselves from media aggression. Stars are searching for media attention. Ariana Grande was recently sued by Robert Barbera, a New York paparazzo who claims she used his photograph of her on her social media pages. The tables have turned! With the rise of selfies and digital photography eliminating the excitement of discovering the unknowns, we may safely say that the paparazzi métier, as we knew it, is “dead”. Nevertheless, It cannot be denied that it was Italy that gave the world, “Il Paparazzo”.

Rino Barillari is a pioneer of a profession that has crowned him “King”. He is one of the 40 most important photographers in the world; with his work he restored dignity to the term “paparazzo”, the resourceful free-lance photographer who provides the world's print with photos of celebrities in their public and private lives. FELLINI EXHIBITION

FELLINI 100 is presented by

COMING SOON 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of Federico Fellini's birth. Due to the restrictions in place, the exhibition, which was to open at the TIFF Bell Lightbox celebrating the Maestro's genius, was forced to postpone. We will keep you posted on developments and a new opening date. Very few artists have managed to represent the entire history of our country as Fellini did, an artist who through cinema has managed to invent a whole world, creating an imaginary capable not only of telling his own generation but also of coming into contact with the younger ones. Fellini showed us how, travelling back in time, one can find magical suggestions to understand the present. This large exhibition inaugurated the initiatives dedicated to the Maestro and represents an opportunity to relive memories, emotions, frames, scenes, suggestions shared by audiences all over the world. It revolves around three cores of content: the first tells the story of Italy from the 1920s to the 1930s and then to the post-war period and ending in the 1980s through the imagery of Fellini's films. The second core is dedicated to the story of the director's travelling companions, real, imaginary, collaborators and not. Finally, the third nucleus is dedicated to the presentation of the permanent project of the Federico Fellini International Museum. Because of the current and ongoing health crisis that is affecting Canada and has led to the closure of theatres and halls across Ontario, including the TIFF Bell Lightbox that would have hosted the Fellini Exhibit - now postponed to next June - in occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Festival.

FELLINI 100 ANNIVERSARY | 29

RETROSPECTIVE You are probably aware of Federico Fellini's centennial celebrations, which began all over the world despite the health emergency, and you also know that paying tribute to him is more than just a dutiful and conventional act. Fellini is the name that brings us to the era of the great cinema of the past, to the deep emotions, which are still alive both in those who know his films, and in those who have only recently approached his work. Well, to revisit this work is to relive, or live for the first time, those same emotions and feelings that give all works of art the fascination of creativity, simply because we share with the author the experience of being in a familiar place, which we may experience through a film, a novel, a poem or a painting. This is Fellini, a genius who has been able to tell us about himself and at the same time by telling us about everyone. To review his films means to be aware of that, hence the retrospective dedicated to him that will be scheduled in times more suited to the presence of his countless admirers.

COMING SOON

FELLINI 100 is presented by

We will be able to understand the originality and the unity of his work, the secrets of his mind and his International successes, with all audiences, regardless of the age and the background of the viewers who have seen and loved his films. We will never forget you, Federico.

FELLINOPOLIS

ICFF 2020

FELLINI 100 is presented by

SILVIA GIULIETTI - DIRECTOR’S NOTE Street by Tim Burton (2008), Hugo Cabret by Martin Scorsese (2012), as well as six other nominations. "A world apart, an imaginary city with a life of its own, populated by unique characters, a Fellinopolis"

Much has been written about the Maestro. So many images, so many interviews, everywhere to be found, but few have been able to witness the scenes of him working at the peak of his creativity. The centenary of the birth of Federico Fellini is the perfect opportunity to show the world this footage of his backstages that have resurfaced after almost 40 years, filmed by Ferruccio Castronuovo. Thanks to the work of Ferruccio, who jealously preserved them for almost forty years in the Cineteca Nazionale, today his films see the light again. The intention is to celebrate Fellini amongst his collaborators and admirers. Revealing this vision to the world was the best way to honour him and to thank him. My film making is aimed above all at the creation of documentaries that tell the story of cinema narrated by those who have made it their lives. Perhaps, I had no other option. I was born and raised in the cinema amongst the soundstages and backlots of Cinecittà, and, not surprisingly, as I set foot in a studio for the first time on the set of The City of Women as a teenager, describing a destiny that is today for me fulfilled by making, FELLINOPOLIS.

The movie was possible thanks to the participation of: Lina Wertmüller – Director. The first woman in history to be nominated for an Oscar as Best Director for the film Seven Beauties. In 2020, she was awarded an Honorary Oscar. Before starting her career as a director, she was Fellini's Assistant director in the films La dolce vita and 8 e ½, in which she also participated as an actress in a minor role. Dante Ferretti - Production Designer. He has given shape to Fellini's imagination in the films Orchestra Rehearsal, City of Women, And the Ship Sails On, Ginger and Fred and The Voice of the Moon, becoming internationally famous thanks to his numerous collaborations in important Hollywood productions. Winner of several awards, including three Academy Awards: The Aviator by Martin Scorsese (2005), Sweeney Todd - The Devilish Barber of Fleet

Nicola Piovani – Composer. Piovani has collaborated with Fellini since his youth, succeeding Nino Rota and Luis Bacalov. He created the soundtrack for the films Ginger and Fred, Intervista, and The Voice of the Moon. A well-known composer of soundtracks, he has worked with some of the greatest directors of Italian cinema, winning an Oscar in 1999 for the music in the film, Life is Beautiful. He is also a composer of musical theatre and concert music. Maurizio Millenotti - A Costume Designer who gave life to Fellini's characters through his costumes in the films City of Women (assistant), And the Ship Sails On, and The Voice of the Moon. Winner of a David di Donatello in 1999 for The Legend of 1900 and in 2013 for The Best Offer. Nominated for an Oscar for the films Otello (1986) and Amleto (1990), both directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Norma Giacchero - Historical Script Supervisor of Federico Fellini's films from 1965 to 1990. She started collaborating with Fellini during the shooting of Juliet of the Spirits, staying at the director's side for 13 films, until his last work The Voice of the Moon. In addition to the supervision, she took care of and followed the post-production until the final copy of the Maestro's films. Ferruccio Castronuovo Director and Author. He did backstage work on the films Casanova, City of Women, And the Ship Sails On, and Ginger and Fred. He also participated as an actor in some small roles in Fellini's films Ginger and Fred and Splendor. He collaborated with the Taviani brothers, Sergio Leone, Luigi Zampa, Giuseppe De Santis, Nanny Loi, Ugo Gregoretti. In conclusion, Castronuovo was also the author and director of many TV programs, as well as being a comic-strip artist.

FELLINI IS UNCOVERED IN ALL HIS ASPECTS, THE MORE HIDDEN ONES AND THE MORE GENUINE ONES Fellinopolis is the new documentary by Silvia Giulietti made in honour of Fellini’s centenary. The film follows Fellini behind the curtains, observing the great director through the eyes and the lenses of Ferruccio Castronuovo, Fellini’s trusted partner, who filmed him between between 1976 and 1986. Set after set, Ferruccio follows the stories, the characters and the cities brought to life by Fellini, “Fellinopolis”, as one could call them,

populated and enriched under the guidance of the director. Fellini is uncovered in all his aspects, the more hidden ones and the more genuine ones, as he directs some of his most famous and renowned pictures Casanova, Città delle Donne, La Nave Và and Ginger e Fred; films that have shaped the craft of filmmaking all over the world. The original footage by Ferruccio is supplemented by comments and interviews from Fellini’s closest collaborators, who talk about the Maestro and his influence over past and contemporary cinema.

SILVIA GIULIETTI Silvia Giulietti is an award-winning Italian producer and director. Her first job in the film industry was at the Gaumont Italia Production Company, where she had the opportunity to work with major filmmakers such as: Federico Fellini, Ettore Scola, Liliana Cavani, Lina Wertmuller and many others. In the early 80s, Silvia was part of the camera production team under the direction of Armando Nannuzzi, becoming one of the first female directors of photography. In 2004, she founded her independent production company, iFrame. In 2018, Silvia produced and directed La Morte Legale, and finally in 2020 she directed FELLINOPOLIS.

ICFF 2020 and the Winner is... by Natalie Quercia

A longstanding tradition of ICFF and film festivals alike are its yearly award recognitions. The core outcome of film festivals themselves could be considered a good old-fashioned competition, putting the best directors, actors, producers, screenwriters and more up against one another. Believe it or not, the first award ever handed out dates back to 1932 at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, and kudos to Italy for inventing the first of the now globally beloved concept that reoccurs yearly worldwide! ICFF did not hesitate to recognize the best-of-thebest in 2019 and 2020 with the remarkable achievements and performances shown in the films presented. Our programmers fall in love with the films each year, and are always looking for ways to celebrate the line-up, allowing different films to shine for different reasons. We love seeing the battle between our festival programmers, the determination of filmmakers putting forth their best work, and

the dedication of actors who alter their entire persona, transforming themselves for a role, all for that magical moment of recognition. This summer the ICFF teamed up with CHIN TV/Radio to organize an incredible initiative called, The Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival. This International 12-day event showcased top films and box of office hits from around the world, and surely, there were many awards to be given out! Starting with the Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival People’s Choice Award, which was given with a great round of “honks to the Peanut Butter Falcon, an adventure comedy-drama

that follows a young man with Down Syndrome on his journey to make his dreams come true. Our audience enjoyed a private video message from co-directors Michael Schwartz and Tyler Neilson, who were extremely humbled with the news. Best Actress was given to Canadian Actress Ana Golja, for her performance in the Opening Film, The Cuban, by Sergio Navarretta, a heart-warming story which now is sweeping Drive-In theatres across the province! With Best Actress comes Best Actor, which was presented to none other than Riccardo Scamarcio, renowned Italian actor and film producer. The awards didn't stop there, a final award was handed out to Sarah Gadon for her work as an esteemed Italian-Canadian Actress, receiving the Special Achievement Award on Closing Night. What an exciting ending to the Nation's first ever Drive-In Film Festival! This past fall at ICFF’s annual event, Apericena @ TIFF, we awarded two incredible

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Italian professionals after the premiere of their film, The Traitor, at TIFF 2019 which went on to win countless awards. Director Marco Bellocchio was honoured with the ICFF Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as a tireless author and a brilliant researcher of the frontiers between himself, cinema and historical events. The ICFF Special Achievement Award was presented to Pierfrancesco Favino for sharing with an international audience his extraordinary career; one which showcases his versatility and depth as an actor. Winning the ICFF Best Producer Award as a true master of his craft is Attilio De Razza. De Razza has enjoyed great success with many of his films, especially multiaward-winning film, Indivisibili, which received countless recognitions, many of which were presented at the 2017 David di Donatello Award Ceremony .

Giacomo Gatti’s documentary Palladio is the clear and refined history of one of Italy’s greatest architectural minds, Andrea Palladio. The film is raw and uninhibited, much like the style of the Venetian Renaissance architect. The documentary is narrated through episodes and dialogues that take place simultaneously in different contexts, but the the common thread is always him: Palladio. His classic style, often considered socially revolutionary, has been studied for years and imitated the world over.

THE ARTIST BEHIND THE 2020 YOUTH POSTER

ICFF is pleased to present ‘ICFF Youth 2020’, an all-new digital approach to bring cinema to the classroom. The mission of ICFF Youth has always been two-fold… firstly, to use cinema as a tool to enrich students’ analytical and critical thinking skills; and secondly, to give students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of other ethnic languages and cultures while enjoying the best of contemporary international cinema. With the impact of Covid-19, Ontario School Boards have had to modify the traditional way of learning, how our educators approach lesson planning and how they teach. ICFF Youth is committed to helping our educators find a solution. ICFF Youth uses the platform of International Cinema to present students with a variety of cultural films. This particular edition will focus on the exploration of Indigenous Culture and French Language Studies, providing educators with an alternate teaching strategy which respects a variety of learning styles.

Anthony Ricciardi is a renowned multidisciplinary artist from Toronto, Canada, of Italian descent, who has travelled internationally showcasing his artwork and murals. Driven by enthusiasm, depth and storytelling to produce art without limits, Ricciardi introduces viewers to distinctive, vivid and colourful one-of-a-kind masterpieces orchestrated in uncommon forms.

ICFF Youth has selected two films which highlight Indigenous and French course studies: Kuessipan directed by Myriam Verreault, targeting High School students, and La légende de Sarila, directed by Nancy Florence Savard, targeting Elementary School students. Each film is presented in the French language accompanied by English subtitles and focuses primarily on Indigenous Culture. Indigenous Culture is an important topic present throughout a student’s schooling experience from Grade 3 through 12, and the incorporation of French makes this more important when covering the Canadian curriculum.

Mikuan and Shaniss, two teenage girls from an Innu community, are best friends that have grown up alongside one another. However, while Mikuan has always had a loving family and a good future in store for her, Shaniss is trying to build a life for herself and is still picking up the pieces of her shattered childhood. Their friendship is finally put to the test when Mikuan falls for Francis, a non-native youth from her workshop, and begins to dream of leaving the reserve, creating a rift between the two that shakes the very foundation of their relationship. Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Naomi Fontaine, “Kuessipan” (which translates roughly to “Your Turn”).

FREEDOM, INDIGENOUS PRIDE, AND THE SENSE OF SISTERHOOD

MYRIAM VERREAULT Best known for her work directing “À l’ouest de Pluton/West of Pluto”, screenwriter, editor and director Myriam Verreault has spent most of her time contributing to Québécois documentaries. She has worked with the National Film Board of Canada to produce award-winning works such as “My Tribe Is My Life” and “The Devil’s Toy Remix”. Her work with “Kuessipan” saw her take multiple trips to the Canadian North Shore to immerse herself in Innu culture. After falling in love with their community, she decided it was necessary to show the world their way of life. “Kuessipan” is her first fiction feature, and has already been selected for more than 50 festivals worldwide.

Yet again, the ICFF hosted another successful edition of Call the Shots: Female Power through Film for a packed house at Toronto’s beloved, TIFF Bell Lightbox. Celebrating International Women’s Day, the annual event was true to its mandate of promoting women’s achievements in film and in society as a whole, and the third edition delivered exactly that. Each year the program selects a unique thematic representing female achievements and success in every aspect, in every field, and in every sector. The theme that took the stage this year was, "Telling THE Story", an intriguing topic demonstrating the many ways a narrative can be conveyed. An exhilarating panel discussion took place with four prominent Italian-Canadian women from the film and television industries, including skillful female writers, producers and script supervisors. The impressive and highly-accomplished panel included Noelle Carbone, Television Screenwriter and Producer of Canadian series Rookie Blue and Saving Hope; Gabriella Martinelli, Producer of international blockbusters like Romeo + Juliet and Lives of the Saints; Angela Mastronardi, Script Supervisor of film and television hits like The Vow and Mrs. America;

and Daniela Saioni, Comedy Writer and Script Supervisor of acclaimed series Suits and the hit comedy Shazam!. The panel discussion was a stimulating conversation about the importance of authenticity in storytelling. The picture drawn by the panel was an encouraging one: the need for women’s stories to be told and heard, and in any dialogue, regardless of the industry, to include the female perspective. The panelists reflected that while there is still much work to be done, great strides have been made in recent years, and the voices of women writers and directors are being heard, now more than ever before. Noelle Carbone was clear in identifying a need for continued vigilance when creating strong female roles that are not simply ‘male characters in a dress’. She noted, “What is traditionally seen as male strength, we need to stay away from prescribing that to female characters… that’s not progress.” Meanwhile Gabriella

ICFF 2020 Martinelli remarked that she enjoys working alongside other women because, “there is camaraderie, and we always have each other’s backs.” This sense of camaraderie between women should be emphasized and highlighted in all industries, to remind society never to underestimate the power of women connecting and supporting one another. The event promotes a sense of leadership and inspiration, which in return allows our audience to network, discuss, share ideas and reach the overall goal of supporting women in their career ambitions in any industry they may be in. The evening concluded with the presentation of the film, The Stolen Caravaggio/Una storia senza nome, directed by Roberto Andò. The story of a young woman working for a film producer, and secretly ghost-writing scripts for a popular male screenwriter. The film fit perfectly within the context of the event’s theme as the young female protagonist is a storyteller whose voice is not heard as her own, and she struggles not only with her anonymity, but also with her ability to uncover and deliver a true story with integrity. As our panellists themselves said, there is still so much work that needs to be done. We’re thrilled by the rise of women’s organizations such as our partners: Women in Leadership Foundation, Women of Influence and the Women’s Law Association of Ontario, creating professional networks of women supporting each other to change the culture and perception of female representation in all societies. Let’s continue to ‘Tell The Story’ from our female narratives, and always remember to share your opinion and mark your success no matter what forces are working against you, or obstacles that come your way. ICFF supports you, and stands with you!

SPECIAL EVENTS | 95

MARA CATALDI, DIRECTOR, CALL THE SHOTS As the founder of Call the Shots: Female Power Through Film, and Director of Operations at the ICFF, I am extremely humbled to have presented with my team the third annual edition of this empowering initiative, which through film, celebrates and honours achievements by women. Unlike many other initiatives focused on female empowerment, which are incredibly important in their own right, Call the Shots is unique. Every year, we select a different thematic, not strictly related to women in film, as in fact previous editions explored immigration, education, entrepreneurship and art, whatever the topic may be, what is important is having the perspective of women on stage, who have achieved great success and become experts in their respective fields. This season’s theme of “Telling the Story” was highlighted by the presence of exceptional and accomplished women that have this in common: storytelling. Did you notice that yet again female filmmakers were excluded from the Best Director category at the 2020 Oscars? Even if, Little Women directed by a woman, Greta Gerwin, received 6 nominations, including one for Best Film, wasn't selected for Best Director… Strange isn't it? When I founded Call the Shots back in 2018, I wanted to create an event that gives a voice to successful women in their industry, to empower other women, and encourage them to never give up. I want women to support each other, and develop a network for them to share knowledge and experiences. We believe the stronger the network of women in the industry, the better their chance of success!

LAVAZZA DRIVE-IN TORONTO, VAUGHAN & MARKHAM 15,000 people, 17 sold-out screenings and 3 unique locations, all amidst a global pandemic… How can that be possible you might think? Well, this year the ICFF didn't just think outside the box, but instead they re-built the box with a never-before-seen idea, the Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival. ICFF, Presented by IC Savings, teamed up with CHIN Radio/TV bringing 17-nights of sold out screenings to the GTA, both international films and a special ‘Focus on Italy’ program in partnership with the Embassy of Italy in Ottawa, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto. Taking over the very hot Canadian summer, the Lavazza Drive-In Series established itself as one of the most successful initiatives to have taken place since the beginning of COVID-19 by bringing people back to cinema. Even though it seemed as nothing was less suited to the times of a pandemic than a film festival, the series proved the exact opposite, becoming a pioneer of a brand new type of festival. Starting in Toronto at Ontario Place, then moving to Vaughan and closing in Markham, the news of the Lavazza Drive-In swept the media off its feet with coverage and interviews requested from countless networks, all trying to wrap their head around the idea of a social event in a pandemic.

Keeping safety as a top priority, the series had a sold-out show each night presenting films for everyone: young, adults, Italians, Canadians, Internationals, film lovers and not. An extraordinary outcome that has also made a great difference, with a portion of all ticket sales donated directly to the Canadian Red Cross, in support of the “AiutiAMO l’Italia” campaign. The Lavazza Drive-In stayed true to the important elements of a film festival, from great cinema personalities, important guests and award recognitions, to the entertaining hosts, who were notable stars from prominent Canadian companies, broadcasters and film experts. Making the experience even more genuine and unique, concession was delivered right to the car window and guests enjoyed the first ever drive-thru red carpet, keeping the feelings of glamour and excitement in the hearts of our audience. ICFF’s platform reconnects audiences through the universal language that is cinema, and the Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival went above and beyond, creating an experience that brought communities back together. In its run, the festival proved to be a “problem-solving festival”, constantly striving for the best solutions. This wasn’t an easy task but as the saying goes, “nothing worth having comes easily”, and in the end, the hard work paid off!
